WalkthroughThe reconnect address walk no longer uses the retry-window duration to limit an in-progress dial. Non-final candidates remain bounded by Priority: ⬇️ Low Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to

In reconnect mode the address walk was bounded by what remained of the retry window, so the first dial got at most --backoff-timeout (10s) rather than --connect-timeout (30s), and a late one only the window's leftovers. A handshake slower than the window could never land: every redial was cut at the same point. The window now decides only whether a new attempt starts, as its docs say. A dial in progress runs to its connect timeout, and a candidate with another to fall back on keeps its 5s bound. Giving up can take up to one dial longer than the window. Document the whole address-walk overrun
When a public Addrs contains multiple slow or black-holed candidates and the retry window expires during the first one, dial_any still starts every remaining candidate. Each non-final candidate can add CONNECT_ATTEMPT and the final candidate can add the full connect timeout, so the loop can exceed the window by an entire, arbitrarily long address walk rather than “one dial,” and attempts do start after the window passes. Please describe that actual bound here so operators do not configure shutdown or failover around an incorrect maximum.

Fixed in 130a5e8. The Backoff::timeout and attempt_timeout docs now say the window stops a new walk from starting, a walk under way tries every candidate (5s each but the last, which runs to the connect timeout), and giving up can overrun the window by one whole walk.

The direction is sound: removing the competing retry-window deadline lets an in-progress handshake finish while preserving the explicit policy of completing the address walk and bounding non-final candidates. The rebase retains transient-error preference and adapts the regression test to the optional backoff timeout.
Checked the complete two-file patch, retry-loop and per-candidate timeout behavior, draining, terminal/transient error handling, and the delayed-TLS regression test. Static GitHub review only; I did not run tests.

Every remaining candidate still gets its turn after the window passes, so giving up can overrun it by a whole walk, not one dial. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Merging. Rebased onto main after #5350: the walk keeps #5237's preference for a transient failure over a terminal one, and drops its "retry window elapsed before dialing" fallback, since every walk now dials every candidate. The test's (Written by Claude Opus 5.5) |
Problem
In reconnect mode,
Connection::dial_anybounded each attempt by what remained of the retry window (retry_budget, and an equal share of it per candidate inattempt_deadline). So the first dial got at most--backoff-timeout(10s), not--connect-timeout(30s), and a later dial got only the window's leftovers. A handshake slower than the window failed every time, and every redial was cut at the same point. In the default mode, which reconnects, the default connect timeout could never apply. One-shot mode had already exempted itself for exactly this reason (see the oldretry_budgetdoc).Approach
The window is the maximum time to spend retrying, so it decides whether a new attempt starts. Cutting an attempt that is already running spends no retry. It only turns a slow success into a failure.
retry_wait), as before.CONNECT_ATTEMPTbound. The last candidate runs to the connect timeout, as in one-shot mode. This removes
retry_budget,attempt_deadline, and their two pure-function tests.Trade-off: giving up can overshoot the window by one walk. With the defaults, a single black-holed address now gives up after about 30s instead of about 10s. If that matters, the knob is the default
connect.timeout, which this PR leaves alone.Impact
No public API change. Behavior change: the moq-tokio reconnect loop only. Wire: none. The
Backoff::timeoutdocs now say a walk under way finishes, its last dial running to the connect timeout, so giving up can overrun the window by one walk.Validation
