quest(m1): plan lock-wait CPU from switches and the bench relay port race - #5404
Conversation
…race Follow-ups from #5277: derive lock-wait CPU from the recorded switch intervals instead of schedstat, and make the bench harness prove its relay owns the port before reporting it ready. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Refuse switchless workers instead of treating them as idle
When a worker remains scheduled for the entire sampled window, context-switches and --switch-events emit no records for it, making a fully busy worker indistinguishable from one that slept throughout the window. After deleting schedstat, this rule would silently classify that worker as idle and omit its CPU from the benchmark; retain an independent run-state signal, record explicit boundary state, or refuse the ambiguous capture rather than reporting it.

Agreed, fixed in 437a456. A worker with no switch records is ambiguous, so the plan keeps the schedstat reads only to classify those workers. If its counter didn't advance, the worker is idle. Otherwise the capture is refused. CPU for every worker that did switch still comes from the recorded intervals.

WalkthroughThe performance README now lists two quests. One quest proposes deriving wait and CPU measurements from the same perf recording, with CPU time calculated from switch events instead of schedstat. The other describes a benchmark relay port-ownership race and proposes readiness checks and a port-conflict test. Priority: ⬇️ Low Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to

Define boundary semantics for CPU intervals.
--switch-events does not provide the start of an interval for a worker already running when recording begins, so the parser cannot derive that interval's exact duration from the event stream alone. At recording end, a switch-in after an earlier switch-out leaves an open CPU interval; the proposed refusal for a worker with no sampled switch-out does not cover that case. Define whether to clip both boundaries or reject incomplete intervals, and add fixtures for both cases. Do not silently omit or count unknown time in cpu_ns.
