quest(m1): same-epoch importers derive one coordinate, active-active - #5438
Conversation
…port Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Every importer sharing an explicit epoch derives its catalog clock, eras, and history-derived catalog fields from the epoch and its source alone, so all stay live and none adopts or exits. Supersedes #5412's first-importer adoption, join-time verification, subscribe grant, and successor epoch after a total outage. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Derive the era without importer-local arrival time
When the source-to-epoch phase is within the importers' delivery or host-clock skew of a half-period boundary, choosing the nearest era from each local arrival clock makes the importers select adjacent eras, so valid same-stream publishers emit timestamps differing by 2^33 ticks and failover splices incompatible coordinates. Because --epoch is operator-supplied, this is not merely a random 1e-7 risk, and documenting the probability does not provide the promised active-active guarantee; use only shared inputs or explicitly refuse ambiguous configurations.

Holding this one for the maintainer rather than changing it here: the 2026-10-13 decision was to take the era from the epoch against the arrival wall clock and document the ~1e-7 split, so either fix suggested would revise a recorded decision.
On the two options:
- Only shared inputs: the epoch's wall time is the only shared value, and it carries no source phase, so the era has to use some local observation.
- Refuse ambiguous configurations: an importer could refuse to start when its measured offset sits within a guard band of the half-period point. If the band is at least the inter-importer skew, importers then either agree or refuse, never split. The cost is choosing that band.
On "operator-supplied": with the recommended rule (PTS zero at E - period), a source reading zero at the epoch's wall time, such as a stream started when the epoch was minted, sits half a period from the boundary. Landing on the boundary would take an epoch picked against the source phase on purpose.

Maintainer decision (2026-10-13): keep 3(b). The era comes from the epoch against the arrival wall clock, and the bound is documented rather than guarded, so there's no guard band and no new constant.
epoch-anchor now records both failure cases in one bullet:
- Importers that start together split with odds of about skew over the period (near 1e-7 at 10 ms).
- The source-to-wall gap drifts by seconds a day, so over weeks it can reach the halfway point mid-run, where even a single importer reads a rewind and fails.

Do not use the first PMT as the TS catalog gate.
Import::handle_pmt processes later PMTs and can add supported streams with new PIDs. The initial reservation is released when the first PES anchors the catalog. Therefore, a later PMT can add a publishable track after the broadcast is announced. A consumer may query that track before it is listed.
Define and document a gate that waits until the selected program's PMT layout is complete, including later PMT updates.

Problem
#5412 settled the redundant-TS coordinate as first-importer adoption: the epoch's first importer fixes the catalog clock and era, and later importers read the live catalog and adopt them. That needs a first importer, which a co-start cannot name (both importers of a pair restart together), and detection through each importer's own relay fails in a cluster. It also forced a subscribe grant on publish-only
--epochtokens and a successor epoch after any total outage.Separately, the #4352 fix (announce once tracks are known) needs none of this but was buried inside
hop-aligned-import.Approach
quest/m1/import-announce-tracks.md[S] out ofhop-aligned-import. It closes A--hopstandby that connects to the relay its subscribers are on ends every one of them withnot found#4352 and is ready now.epoch-anchoraround derivation. Each importer derives the catalog clock, each timestamp's era, and any history-derived catalog field from the epoch (a UUIDv7, so a shared ms wall time) and its own source. Nothing reads the relay, waits on a peer, or exits for one.catalog-clock-adoptmoves from Required to Related, sinceTimebase::placeinstalls a derived clock exactly and nothing reads a catalog back.hop-aligned-import,ts-passthrough-epoch-cuts,import-announce-tracks, and the m1 README drop the joiner/adopt/incumbent language. What still holds is kept, such as generated tracks numbered from the epoch timeline. Sizes are unchanged.Decisions
Split #4352 out of
hop-aligned-import:epoch-anchorhop-aligned-importGoal (maintainer, 2026-10-13):
Catalog wall-clock mapping:
E - period, rounded to a whole µs), with the era chosen against that clock. This keeps timestamps non-negative, maps a source reading zero at E exactly, and puts it half a period from the era boundary. A format that never wraps uses PTS zero at E.Reversals of #5412 decisions, each recorded as superseded with its reason:
--epochtokens (and itsdoc/bin/cli.md/doc/bin/relay/auth.mdnotes) is dropped.random_access,mux_rate, others) derive from the epoch plus content, not the live catalog.Same-epoch, different-content guard in the relay or model:
epoch-anchor's Plan. Nothing refuses such routes, and failover resumes mid-group across them (rs/moq-net/src/model/resume.rs).Era split near the halfway point (Codex review):
epoch-anchorrecords the co-start odds (skew over period, about 1e-7 at 10 ms) and the case where drift reaches the halfway point mid-run, so a single importer reads a rewind and fails.Still open, reworded under derivation:
epoch-anchor. The question is how a supervisor gets one successor for both importers without coordination; proposed: derive it from the old epoch and the last frame's catalog time.hop-aligned-import.Impact
Quest-only; no code, public API, or wire change. The planned behavior differs from #5412:
--epochneeds no subscribe right, and the shared-epoch rootclockcomes from the epoch.Follow-ups
ts-passthrough-epoch-cutsstill has to settle the M2ts rule. Recommended: per grid window, with the catalog published once a whole window is seen.(Written by Claude Opus 5.5)
