feat(demo): add a CARLA teleop demo - #5621
Conversation
Simulated trucks in one CARLA world, watched and steered from a browser over MoQ. demo/carla/web is the player, demo/carla/sim the Python worker with its CARLA build, Unreal plugin, and user units, and demo/carla/bridge the GPU video bridge that hands the simulator's Vulkan images to moq-video's encoder without leaving the GPU. The gate routes each part to its module: the player to js, the bridge to rs (a moq-video change re-checks it), and the worker to a new carla module. The bridge's NVIDIA test stays an explicit recipe. Use the decoder compiled into the GPU bridge test, accept NixOS JSON CDI descriptors, and include Git LFS for simulator source checkout. Co-Authored-By: GPT-5 <noreply@openai.com>

NVIDIA verification is complete on NixOS with a GeForce RTX 3070 Ti.
The proof found and fixed the NVIDIA-only decoder mismatch, added support for NixOS JSON CDI descriptors with regression coverage, added Git LFS to the devshell required by the source build, and normalized the bridge crate for the workspace formatting gate. (written by GPT-5) |

Signals intervals take a branded Nano on main, so the player passes Nano.fromMilli and depends on @moq/clock. The Vulkan encode quest moved to m2, so the bridge quest's Required link follows it. The aerial was a 4K WebP (1.98 MB) that every visitor downloads, while the map only fits the roads to its panel. A 2560x1440 re-encode is 354 KB; the manifest's size and checksum follow, and the maps README says to ship at most that. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The CARLA and engine patches, the MoqBridge Unreal plugin, and the scripts and containers that build the simulator image move to their own repository. No moq gate compiled them, rebuilding them needs an Epic-linked account, and they pulled git-lfs into every developer's dev shell, which goes too. moq keeps the bridge library and its C header. moq-dev/carla holds an identical copy of carla_bridge.h, and its build refuses a mismatch, so the header's comment says to change both. The docs, launcher, worker error, and unit installer point at the new repository instead of `just carla build`. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

main's Color now carries primaries and transfer, so the bridge's Bt709Limited constant became Color::BT709. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
TrackDemand now reports the wanted group, so the sim waits on wanted_changed() for demand to start and stop, and a subscriber moving on to the next group stays demand. The bridge takes the workspace's rustfmt output. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
WalkthroughThis change adds a CARLA teleoperation demo with a Python simulator worker, a Linux Vulkan video bridge, and a browser player. The worker manages truck control, simulation timing, telemetry, and MoQ publication. The bridge transfers GPU-backed camera frames and encoded renditions over a Unix socket. The player displays vehicle video and map data, accepts keyboard and steering-wheel inputs, and exposes control and emergency-stop actions. The change also adds setup scripts, service units, tests, documentation, and repository check integration. Priority: ⬇️ Low Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to

Cap concurrent announced drivers
On the viewer-publishable driver prefix, every distinct live announcement reaches this branch, creates a task and broadcast subscription, and retains it in drivers with no ceiling. A publisher can therefore hold many unique driver IDs open and exhaust worker and relay resources without sending a command; enforce a bounded number of concurrent drivers per truck and refuse excess announcements.

Declining for this PR. A refusal cap here would let a flood of driver IDs block the e-stop: every viewer's safety command is its own safety-* driver broadcast, and a full worker would refuse it along with the excess. Exempting the safety- prefix does not help, since any publisher can pick that name. The bound belongs at the relay that issues the anonymous viewer/** grant, as a per-session announce limit. Each driver here costs one task and one subscription only while its announcement stays up on the relay.

Reclaim worker-created stream threads
Each previously unseen Open name permanently inserts a Stream, and Stream::spawn creates an OS thread; Close only closes the session, while this global entry is drained only when the whole bridge is dropped. A worker peer can repeatedly open and close unique names to accumulate unbounded threads and map state inside the simulator process, so reject unknown source-less names or reclaim streams once they have neither sources nor a session.

Declining. The only peer on this socket is the demo's own worker, over a Unix socket under $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR (mode 0700), so anyone who can open it already runs as the simulator's user. The worker opens one stream per configured camera, a fixed set per run, and a stream is created by whichever side names it first because the worker and the plugin start in either order. Reclaiming idle streams would add lifecycle state to guard against a peer we already trust.

Clean up vehicles when the spawn tick fails
If this landing tick times out, raises a CARLA error, or is interrupted after _spawn_vehicle succeeds, execution never enters either cleanup block below. The actor is also not yet represented in self.trucks, so the outer World.destroy() cannot find it and leaves the vehicle in the persistent simulator; include this tick and transform read in the vehicle cleanup scope.

Fixed in 08ec87d: the landing tick and the lead transform read now sit inside the vehicle's cleanup scope. test_spawn_tick_failure_destroys_the_vehicle covers a tick timeout and fails without the change.

Bound rendition dimensions before probing
A worker can send an Open for an existing camera with any nonzero even u32 dimensions. probe() then allocates an I420 buffer of roughly width * height * 1.5 before NVENC can reject the configuration, so values such as 4294967294x4294967294 can abort the simulator process through allocation failure. Cap dimensions, total pixels, bitrate, and frame rate while validating the untrusted request.

Declining, for the same reason as the stream-name finding above: renditions come from the worker's own camera config, and the only peer on this socket is that worker, over a Unix socket under $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR (mode 0700). A peer able to send this Open already runs as the simulator's user.

Cap timestamp metadata before retaining it
An anonymous driver that becomes the lease holder can supply an arbitrarily large timestamps array and arbitrarily long labels. Every entry is retained, converted into _media_pipeline, and included in status updates at 10 Hz, so the command queue's item-count bound does not prevent memory, serialization, compression, and outbound-bandwidth exhaustion. Limit the number of stages and label length, or reject oversized metadata.

Fixed in 712edc2: the sim keeps only the player's three pipeline stages (received, decoded, rendered), the first of each, and drops every other entry. test_only_the_players_pipeline_stages_are_kept covers a 1,000-entry array of oversized labels.

Route the wheel E-stop through the focused truck
When the configured wheel E-stop is pressed while the operator is viewing but not actively driving a truck, activeTruck() is undefined and the button silently does nothing. This contradicts the bystander safety path used by the keyboard, tile, and calibration dialog, and makes the physical emergency control unavailable unless this browser already holds the lease; send the E-stop through safetyTruck()?.emergencyStop() while retaining activeTruck() for gear buttons.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in 712edc2: the wheel's E-stop now goes through safetyTruck()?.emergencyStop(), like the keyboard and tile, and the lease-only Truck.estop() it used is gone. Gear stays on activeTruck(). No test: wheelButtons lives in main.ts's module scope, which the unit tests do not load.
(Written by Claude Opus 5.5)
…timestamps The wheel's E-stop went only to a truck this browser drove, so a viewer's physical button did nothing; it now takes the same safety path as the keyboard and tile. The sim keeps only the player's three pipeline stages from a driver's timestamps, so an anonymous lease holder cannot grow the status it echoes. Run the ignored GPU bridge test in CI
This end-to-end test is skipped by ordinary Cargo runs, and a repository-wide search of .github finds no invocation of bridge-gpu or the CARLA suite; just carla check only runs bridge/gpu.test.sh, which tests GPU detection rather than gpu_video_reaches_the_worker. As a result, the bridge's core Vulkan/NVENC path can regress without any CI lane detecting it, so add the manual recipe to an NVIDIA-backed nightly job.

Declining here: no CI runner has an NVIDIA GPU yet. Wiring NVIDIA tests into a nightly on real hardware is quest/m2/gpu-ci.md, and quest/m2/carla-bridge.md (added in this PR) lists it as the lane that runs this test. Until then just carla bridge-gpu is the explicit recipe, run on a CARLA host; it passed on an RTX 3070 Ti for this PR.

Keep the clock running through manual handback
When the last viewer disconnects while its truck is moving or off-lane, driver_left or the watchdog calls Truck.release(), which may begin the multi-tick handback with autonomy still disabled, but this branch immediately removes the final clock hold. With no remaining status or video subscriber, the world parks after the first handback command, so subsequent telemetry calls cannot advance the truck to the point where release() enables Traffic Manager; keep a hold until the truck reports autonomous.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Declining. With nobody watching or driving, the world is parked on purpose: no truck moves, so a handback paused partway has nothing to catch up on. The stuck watchdog resets while the truck is not autonomous or the clock is parked, so it does not fire. The first viewer to return takes a status hold, the clock steps again, and the telemetry tick finishes the handback before Traffic Manager takes over, which is what that viewer then sees. Holding the clock until autonomy would step the shared world for an audience of none.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Wait for the previous submission before you free the slot's command buffer.
The comment at Line 190-191 says the encoder waited on the signal before the slot came back. That holds only for a published slot. In some cases the bridge returns a slot to Idle without publishing it. In stream.rs frame(), this happens when plan returns None after a camera switch, when the session key does not match the encoding, or when plan.renditions is empty. In those cases Job::drop hands the slot back right away on the stream thread, and nothing has waited for the GPU.
Source::acquire picks the first idle slot. The next render can therefore get the same slot again while its last submission is still pending. The free_command_buffers call at Line 321 would then free a pending command buffer. Vulkan does not allow that, and the result is undefined driver behavior. The #[ignore]d GPU test could fail intermittently, or the standin example could crash, when demand changes.
The stand-in is meant to model the plugin. The real plugin must also handle this case, so the stand-in should show the correct handling. Record the ready value of each submission. Before you free the old buffer, wait on the slot's timeline for that value. In the normal case the wait returns at once.

Deferring: the stand-in only runs under just carla bridge-gpu on an NVIDIA host, which I cannot exercise from here, so a change to its slot recycling would land untested. It belongs with the bridge's next GPU pass in quest/m2/carla-bridge.md, which reworks the stand-in for AMD anyway.

@kixelated Understood. Deferring this to the GPU pass in quest/m2/carla-bridge.md avoids changing slot recycling without GPU validation. The command-buffer lifetime concern remains unresolved.

- latency_breakdown clamps each stage before int(), so a driver's extreme timestamps can no longer raise OverflowError and end the worker for every truck. - The player keeps its own e-stop latched until a status echoes it, so a status sent before the stop cannot unlatch it and let drive frames replace the stop on the snapshot track. - Respawn reads the cached road map instead of downloading the OpenDRIVE again on the shared event loop. - `just carla worker` lets the worker read MOQ_URL itself, keeping a production token off argv. Stop refreshing the lease with E-stop heartbeats
When the current driver latches the E-stop, this 250 ms heartbeat keeps sending estop; the backend accepts every repeated holder E-stop and refreshes _deadline, so the watchdog never releases the lease. An abandoned but still-open controller therefore owns the truck indefinitely, and after another viewer resets the latch, other operators remain locked out while the old page can resume sending input. Stop heartbeating while latched or ensure repeated E-stops do not renew the driving lease.

Declining: this matches the lease as designed. The watchdog detects a driver whose page or connection is gone, not an idle person. An open, focused page that is not e-stopped heartbeats a resting drive every 250 ms and keeps the lease the same way, so stopping the e-stop heartbeat would not change who can be locked out. It would only make an e-stopped holder lose the truck while still present. Releasing an idle lease is a separate policy (an inactivity timeout on the player) that would cover both cases.

Keep the reset command pending until acknowledgment
When the current lease holder resets the E-stop, clearing this local flag lets the 250 ms heartbeat immediately replace the reset_estop snapshot with a drive snapshot. The Python SnapshotConsumer is explicitly lossy and collapses backlog, so whenever the worker or network falls behind it can skip the reset entirely, remain latched, and reject the replacement drive commands. Repeat or retain reset_estop until status confirms that the latch cleared.

Declining, as in the CodeRabbit thread on resetEstop: a holder's reset_estop replaced by a drive frame leaves the truck latched, which fails safe. Status keeps reporting estopped: true, the player re-latches, and the holder presses reset again. Retaining the reset until acknowledged would change the heartbeat contract for an outcome that is already safe.

Detect a refused vehicle destruction
If CARLA returns false from Actor.destroy() without throwing, this cleanup treats the refusal as success, even though World.sweep() and the aerial cleanup already recognize that return value as failure. During normal shutdown the truck is then removed from self.trucks, so the persistent simulator retains the vehicle with no further cleanup attempt until a later worker happens to sweep it; check the boolean result and surface the refusal.

Not in this PR. A vehicle the server refuses to destroy here is still removed: main calls World.sweep() at every worker start, and it destroys every vehicle in the world and raises if the server refuses one. Logging the refusal at shutdown as well is a small consistency follow-up, not a leak across runs.

The earlier reformat came from a parent directory's rustfmt.toml on the checkout's host, not this repository's config; CI's cargo fmt wants the default four-space indent this crate had. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Retain the E-stop after releasing control
If the lease holder presses E and immediately releases control before the simulator echoes the stop, this branch places the E-stop only on the driving broadcast; #runControlLease then clears the command and #runControl closes that broadcast. Under relay or worker lag, the simulator may never receive the stop, while #estopUnconfirmed keeps ignoring estopped: false statuses and leaves the tile showing a latch that never happened. Keep the unconfirmed E-stop on a safety broadcast until a true status echo arrives.

Fixed in b478a32: when control is released with this player's e-stop still unconfirmed, the player resends it on the safety broadcast, which stays up until a status echoes the latch. No unit test: the safety broadcast only exists on a live origin, which the truck tests do not construct.

Releasing control closes the driving broadcast, which may not have delivered the holder's e-stop yet. While the stop is unconfirmed, the player now resends it on the safety broadcast, which stays up until a status echoes the latch. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Problem
MoQ Boy shows viewers steering a server-side process over MoQ, but nothing in the repo shows the teleoperation case it hints at: real-time video from a GPU-rendered scene, a driver claiming one vehicle at a time, and feedback that says what the vehicle actually did. There is also no end-to-end user of
moq-video'sencode::Config::inputandSurface::Vulkanpath, where an external Vulkan producer hands frames to the encoder without a CPU copy.Approach
demo/carlaadds a CARLA teleop demo besidedemo/boy:web/(@moq/demo-carla): the player. It mints an epoch per run, publishescarla/{truck}/{camera}.hang(sd,hd,status), and consumesviewer/carla/{truck}/. The safety gate gives one driver the lease, bound to its path and announced epoch, with a 1 s watchdog, a latched e-stop, a gear interlock, and a return to Traffic Manager autonomy when the lease lapses. It also carries the podman launcher and rootless systemd user units.bridge/(moq-carla-bridge): a library the simulator loads. The Unreal plugin copies each camera's render target into an exportable Vulkan image; the bridge passes it tomoq-videoasSurface::Vulkanwith the plugin's device asencode::Config::input, so NVENC converts, scales, and encodes on the GPU.
