Summary

Video renditions get an optional color catalog field: the H.273 primaries, transfer, and matrix, a range of limited or full, plus the SMPTE ST 2086 mastering display and the CTA-861.3 content light levels. A renderer can set up its pipeline from the catalog instead of guessing or reparsing the bitstream. This closes the // TODO color space in VideoConfig.

Where it comes from (moq-mux)

  • Bitstream: H.264 SPS VUI (the existing VUI walker now reads the video signal type), H.265 SPS VUI (scuffle), the AV1 sequence header (inline, or av1C configOBUs), and VP9 key frame headers and vpcC. The VP9/AV1 codec-string fields keep their wire meaning and feed the neutral field when they are read.
  • Static HDR metadata: H.264/H.265 keyframe SEI (payload types 137 and 144) and AV1 metadata OBUs, in the codec importers (MPEG-TS, raw Annex-B/OBU, track import, avc1/hvc1 included). Metadata is overlaid in the shared codec::video::Catalog and republishes the last config only when it changes.
  • Container fills gaps: the ISOBMFF colr (nclx) box and the Matroska Colour element, merged per field through one color::fill. That is the same path VideoHint now uses, so the stream always wins.
  • Precedence: the bitstream beats the container. A disagreement logs a warn naming the field, both values, and the losing source. An unspecified (2) or reserved code point counts as absent, so a partial box never overrides a complete bitstream.

Review-driven behaviour:

  • A new SPS, sequence header, or out-of-band record starts a new coded sequence and drops cached HDR10 metadata, so an HDR-to-SDR switch can't keep stale values.
  • av1C configOBUs feed colour and HDR metadata on every path.
  • VP8 reads vpcC.
  • Exported vpcC (VP8 and VP9) carries the resolved catalog colour, with unspecified for unknown fields, instead of placeholders.

Export: the fMP4 exporter writes colr nclx when the catalog has a code point or range. The MKV exporter writes Colour, mastering and light levels included. With no colour, both outputs are unchanged.

Also: moq-video's rendition_hint now carries the probed colour. Without it the first keyframe "corrected" the advertised rendition, which an existing test caught.

Public API / wire impact

  • hang::catalog: new Color, Range, Mastering, Chromaticity, ContentLight, and VideoConfig::color (additive; Color is #[non_exhaustive]).
  • moq_mux::catalog::VideoHint::color (additive; #[non_exhaustive]). FFI hints don't expose it yet; nothing needs it.
  • @moq/hang: Color and ColorSchema, exported from the catalog entrypoint, and the color rendition field.
  • moq_mux::container::fmp4::Error::InvalidColr and mkv::Error::InvalidColour (both enums #[non_exhaustive]): a container colour value with no H.273 or CTA-861.3 representation is refused, not clamped.
  • Wire: an optional catalog field, backwards compatible because old readers ignore it. draft-lcurley-moq-hang defines it and gets a changelog entry. color is not part of track identity.

Settled decisions

Field naming, decided by the maintainer on 2026-10-17. fullRange disagreed with range in moq-video's Color (#5808), and names should mirror across packages:

  • (a) color with fullRange: bool, mirroring WebCodecs
  • ✅ (b) range: "limited" | "full", matching moq-video's Range enum
  • (c) rename moq-video's field to full_range

Settled on the recommended course while the maintainer was away:

  1. Code points are H.273 integers, not WebCodecs strings. They are lossless, and every source signals them. WebCodecs' enums can't express many values, and handing colorSpace to a decoder overrides the in-band VUI.
  2. A conflict between sources logs a warn naming the field, both values, and the losing source. No source field goes on the wire.
  3. Mastering is in natural units: decimal CIE xy and cd/m², as Matroska and Chromium use. Values are exact to the SEI's resolution.
  4. The H.265 limited-range-only edge case is accepted. scuffle_h265 can't tell an absent video signal type from one signalling only limited range, so such a VUI reads as unsignalled, and renderers assume limited anyway.

Not covered (follow-ups)

  • H.264/H.265 in fMP4 and FLV get code points but no HDR10 metadata. mp4-atom has no mdcv/clli boxes, and CMAF samples aren't scanned for SEI. AV1 is covered through the metadata OBUs in av1C configOBUs.
  • The MKV V_VP9 and av1C-only AV1 paths still put a fabricated BT.709 in the codec string. That's pre-existing; the neutral field ignores it.

Tests

  • Fixtures are real x264/x265 encodes: SDR BT.709 and HDR10 SPS, plus HDR10 SEI that needs emulation prevention.
  • Each source is tested on its own: H.264 and H.265 VUI, AV1 configOBUs (from av1.mp4), SEI and AV1 metadata parsing, Annex-B and length-prefixed access units, the colr box, and the Matroska Colour element.
  • A source that signals nothing adds no field and no colr box.
  • Conflicts: the SPS beats colr, the Matroska Colour element, and the hint.
  • Gaps: a container fills what the SPS leaves unspecified.
  • Round trips: SDR fMP4 import then export is byte-identical, and HDR10 survives a Matroska Colour round trip.
  • JS: the schema parses and refuses out-of-range values.
  • just check and just drafts check pass. just test interop --all was not run: this is a hang catalog field, not moq-lite wire.
  • Perf: the annexb-import bench (every frame a keyframe, the worst case for the extra SEI scan) ran interleaved A/B, 3 rounds, on a loaded shared host. No regression showed: the branch was at or below main in every round, inside the noise.

Outcome: quest quest/m2/color-catalog.md is implemented and deleted in this PR. It stays a draft until the five API decisions in the description are settled (recommendations included). Locally just check and just drafts check pass. The remaining gap, fMP4/FLV HDR10 metadata, is listed as a follow-up and not attempted here.

CI: every job passes except TS validation → "TS full multiplex at its own rate". It reports a PID 0x101 MP2 audio hole (24–96 ms) and failed twice here. The same signature fails on unrelated branches right now: quest/m1/auth/request-update, quest/m1/announce-live, and quest/m1/migrate (runs 39003830303, 39003497291, 39003437371). The nightly on main passed. This PR only touches video colour, so I'm treating it as a shared intermittent failure; it is worth its own investigation.

Walkthrough

The change adds optional color metadata to video rendition catalogs and JavaScript validation schemas. Codec importers extract color and HDR metadata from codec configuration and frame data, while container importers combine codec and container values. fMP4 and Matroska export paths write catalog color metadata. Video hints now carry color, and documentation describes the field and its sources.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 7b9f9

Colour metadata with an unspecified range can become marked as limited after an fMP4 round-trip. This is a narrow issue that merits a fix, but does not otherwise block merging.

Ready for review. Status:

  • Decisions settled on the recommended course: H.273 integers, a warn log on conflict, mastering in natural units, and accepting the H.265 limited-range edge case.
  • Still open for the maintainer: field naming. fullRange here vs range in moq-video's Color (feat(video)!: Color carries primaries and transfer, decoded pictures keep their stream's colour #5808). I recommend keeping color + fullRange to mirror WebCodecs; see the PR body.
  • Reviews: three Codex rounds raised 11 findings. Eight are fixed with regression tests, two were re-posts of already-fixed threads, and one CodeRabbit suggestion (omit colr when range is unknown) was declined with a reason in its thread.
  • CI: all green on 7b8590cfa. The earlier TS validation failures were the shared MP2-hole flake and passed on this run.

Correction to my status above: a fourth Codex round landed while I was writing it, and main gained a conflicting preference field in the hang draft.

  • Codex round 4: nclc code points are now kept (fixed, with a test). Scanning SEI on every access unit is declined: the specs require the static HDR SEI in the sequence's first IRAP access unit, with identical content throughout. The H.265 limited-range edge case is the settled decision. Each thread has a reply.
  • Rebased onto main: in the draft, preference and color now both sit in VideoDecoderConfigExtensions. just check, just drafts check, and quest check pass locally.

Final status at f6058adf0, marked ready and not merged:

  • Reviews: five Codex rounds and one CodeRabbit pass. 13 findings fixed, each with a regression test (one confirmed real: av1C HDR metadata lost at the first sync sample). Three declined with reasons in-thread: omit colr on unknown range, scan SEI on every access unit, and the settled H.265 limited-range case.
  • CI: everything passes except TS validation's "TS full multiplex at its own rate" MP2 hole. That is the shared intermittent failure seen on unrelated branches; it passed on 7b8590cfa.
  • Open for the maintainer: field naming, fullRange vs moq-video's range (feat(video)!: Color carries primaries and transfer, decoded pictures keep their stream's colour #5808). I recommend keeping color + fullRange to mirror WebCodecs.

The AV1 track importer now takes colour and HDR metadata OBUs from an av1C's
configOBUs, and every av1C path keeps those metadata OBUs. VP8's vpcC is read
like VP9's, and the exporter writes the catalog colour into it instead of
mp4-atom's BT.709 placeholder.

…ntable colour

A new SPS or sequence header replaces the cached HDR metadata instead of
merging, so an HDR-to-SDR switch drops stale HDR10 values. vpcC now carries the
resolved colour so it can't contradict colr. Matroska Colour and colr values
with no catalog representation are refused rather than clamped.

A new avcC, hvcC, or av1C starts a new coded sequence, so cached in-band HDR
metadata is cleared. A partial catalog colour writes the missing vpcC fields as
unspecified instead of a codec string's placeholder. @moq/hang exports Color and
ColorSchema from its catalog entrypoint.

The first sequence header after an av1C is the record's own, so it no longer
resets the configOBUs' HDR metadata. Only registered H.273 code points count as

Rename applied in e7c3f329a: the catalog colour now carries range: "limited" | "full" (hang::catalog::Range), matching moq-video's Range from #5808. This covers Rust, JS, the hang draft, and the tests. The branch is rebased onto main with #5808, and just check, just drafts check, and quest check pass.

Not merged. The automated-review budget (3 rounds) is spent; Codex has run six. The sixth round, on f6058adf0, left three threads unfixed and unresolved for the maintainer:

  1. codec/color.rs: matrix coefficients 15–17 are registered in H.273 (2024) but fall outside cicp's registered set, so they read as unspecified. This is a real bug from round 5. Recommend fixing by adding 15..=17.
  2. codec/h264/import.rs (also hev1 and raw AV1): reinitializing an Annex-B importer with a new SPS updates last_sps before the HDR cache resets, so the same seed passing through the splitter doesn't count as a new sequence. Valid; the fix is a small reset in initialize_avc3, initialize_hev1, and the raw-OBU initialize.
  3. container/mkv/import.rs: finite but out-of-range mastering values (negative luminance, chromaticity outside 0..1) are accepted. Valid and cheap to refuse with InvalidColour.

CI: all green except TS validation "TS full multiplex at its own rate", the shared MP2-hole flake (it passed on 7b8590cfa).

…ence, range-check Matroska mastering

Matrix coefficients 15-17 (IPT-C2, YCgCo-Re, YCgCo-Ro) are registered, so they
count as signalled. Seeding an Annex-B or raw-OBU importer with a new SPS or
sequence header drops the last sequence's HDR metadata before the config
publishes. Matroska mastering chromaticities outside 0..=1 and negative
luminances are refused.

Merging per the maintainer. Summary of the final state:

Changes: an optional catalog color for video renditions. It holds H.273 primaries/transfer/matrix, a range of limited or full (matching moq-video's Range), the ST 2086 mastering display, and CTA-861.3 contentLight. It is filled from the bitstream first: H.264/H.265 VUI and SEI, the AV1 sequence header, metadata OBUs and av1C, and VP9 headers/vpcC. Container colr/nclc and Matroska Colour fill only the gaps. fMP4 colr/vpcC and MKV Colour carry it on export. Defined in Rust, @moq/hang, the hang draft, and the concept doc.

Decisions: range naming (maintainer); H.273 integers, a warn log on conflict, mastering in natural units, and accepting the H.265 limited-range edge case (recommended course).

Final pass (1b4ffcab6):

  • Matrix 15–17 are accepted.
  • Raw Annex-B/OBU seeding resets HDR10 on a new sequence.
  • Out-of-range Matroska mastering values are refused.

Each fix has a test that fails without it. All review threads are resolved, and CI is green, TS validation included.

Follow-ups (not in this PR):

  • HDR10 metadata for H.264/H.265 in fMP4/FLV (mp4-atom mdcv/clli).
  • The TS validation MP2-hole flake.
  • Placeholder BT.709 in MKV VP9 and av1C-only codec strings.
  • Exact H.265 limited-range signalling.
  • The WebGPU HDR renderer, now unblocked.

Merged main into the branch (88b922e3d) to clear a conflict with the display-aspect work (#5755), which centralized SPS parsing. The resolution is mechanical: main's structure is kept and color is threaded through it. The H.264 Vui now carries color, and Vui::apply sets it. The H.265 shared config_from_sps sets it, and apply_hvcc_sps copies it. That replaced this PR's separate hvcc_color helper. just check passes locally, with no behaviour change to either feature.
