Replans the archive line around decisions the maintainer made on 2026-10-17. This PR changes quests only; no code, drafts, or docs.

Decisions (paper trail)

  1. SUBSCRIBE_ALL (moq-lite-07-wip; the lite-07 cut waits on it)

    • One prefix-scoped request delivers every track of every broadcast under a path. It follows tracks and broadcasts as they appear and end, and never creates a track that is served only on request.
    • Relays fan out from one upstream request.
    • Rejected:
      • A track-listing stream plus a SUBSCRIBE per track: two mechanisms, and a race on a new track's first groups.
      • A name filter.
      • A request per broadcast, fanned out per announcement.
      • Exact namespaces only.
  2. IETF SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS maps 1:1 onto SUBSCRIBE_ALL, and PUBLISH onto the same hook, instead of answering NOT_SUPPORTED. That keeps one mechanism and supports IETF clients.

  3. moq-archive becomes archive::Producer / archive::Consumer with no catalog dependency.

    • One prefix subscription records every matching broadcast, each under its own key prefix.
    • Each track records with max delay = min(publisher max age, cap). A missing group becomes a gap, never a stall.
    • Groups coalesce into per-track objects cut by duration, keyed <prefix>/<track>/<first group>-<first pts>.
      • Untimed tracks use <first group> and are never split.
      • The object for an open untimed group is rewritten in place.
    • A per-track .info holds the TRACK_INFO properties.
    • The key listing is the index.
    • A DVR mode prunes objects past a window after a grace period.
    • No manual flush() / cut().
    • Rejected:
      • Objects covering the whole broadcast per time window.
      • Cuts by size.
      • Properties only in object headers.
      • No retention in the crate.
      • A relay storage fallback.
  4. Serving the archive as a covering-prefix route under the original path is rejected.

    • An exact live route shadows any prefix route.
    • An Epoch-pinned request is UNROUTABLE unless the winning route has that Epoch.
    • Refusals never fall through.

A host serves the archive at a path of its choosing. Stitching it into the original path is deferred.

  5. The catalog's root archive section is deleted from rs/hang, js/hang, the hang draft, moq-mux and moq-hls. The draft's Recording section goes too; the layout is documented in moq-archive rustdoc and a new Archives doc page.

  6. Timelines survive only as an opt-in per-rendition hls field, for HLS compatibility.

    • Records are (first group, pts). EXTINF derives from the next record, and an ended track's last record carries a duration.
    • Enabling it requires segments aligned across renditions.
    • moq-mux and @moq/publish publish it only when enabled.
    • Rejected: always-on timelines; records with the group only; resolving unaligned renditions against a reference rendition.
  7. Subscribe ranges gain a Time(pts) end.

    • Whoever holds the track resolves it; untimed tracks refuse it.
    • It lands before lite-07 finalizes.
    • DVR in @moq/watch seeks with it.
  8. Paced replay paces timed tracks only. Untimed tracks stay readable by request and range.

  9. Formats break in place, since nothing is in production.

  10. Review round (2026-10-18), chosen as recommended by the iterating agent:

    • Consumer refresh: a cursor per track plus a delimiter LIST for new tracks ✅. Rejected: one prefix-wide StartAfter (skips keys under earlier tracks), rescanning the whole prefix (cost grows with the archive).
    • Served Publisher Max Age: no limit ✅; .info keeps only timescale and priority. Rejected: the source's max age (expires archived history), a consumer-configured value (no caller needs it yet).
    • Resume: at the frame after the last stored one, per track, via its own floor on the yielded track::Consumer ✅. Rejected: after the last group (loses a split or open group's tail), re-recording the group from frame 0 (fails once the source dropped its head), a per-track start field in SUBSCRIBE_ALL.
    • Track names: the existing canonical percent encoding, one key segment ✅.

Quest changes

  • New:
    • archive/subscribe-all
    • archive/producer
    • archive/consumer
    • archive/catalog-hls
    • archive/subscribe-tracks
  • Retargeted:
    • subscribe-ranges/dynamic: carries the Time(pts) anchor, since model.md landed in feat(net)!: carry group ranges on track::Subscription #5732
    • archive README: now the epic "Broadcast archives", which owns the Archives doc page
    • archive/hls-target
    • archive/history-floor
    • subscribe-ranges: README, lite, ietf, js
    • lite07-finalize: SUBSCRIBE_ALL is now required
    • m2/archive-dvr
    • m2/js-hls, previously archive-js-timelines
    • m3/archive-paced-replay
  • Deleted:
    • archive/replay-catalog: the catalog is archived as an ordinary track.
    • archive/flush: folded into producer.
    • m2/archive-recovery-listing: the key listing is the index.
    • m3/archive-browser: any publisher's broadcast is archived natively through SUBSCRIBE_ALL, and a browser-local archive had no named consumer.

quest check passes.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

The archive line drops its catalog coupling: moq-archive becomes a
Producer/Consumer pair fed by a new prefix-scoped moq-lite SUBSCRIBE_ALL
(gating lite-07, with IETF SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS mapped onto it), objects are
per-track and keyed by first group and pts beside a per-track .info, an
optional DVR mode prunes them, and hosts serve stored broadcasts.
Timelines remain only as an opt-in per-rendition `hls` field with aligned
segments. Subscribe ranges gain a Time(pts) end for DVR seek.

- One cached LIST of the prefix is the index: it names the tracks and maps
any group or pts to an object. Each track's `.info` supplies its TRACK_INFO
properties before any media is read. A growing archive refreshes with
StartAfter from the newest known key, and re-reads a track's newest object,

P1 Badge Refresh growing archives with per-track cursors

When a recording contains multiple tracks, one global StartAfter marker misses every new object inserted under a lexicographically earlier track prefix. For example, after the marker advances into video/..., a later audio/... object sorts before it and is never returned, so the consumer silently stops following that track and can also miss newly added tracks. Refresh each track prefix independently or use a listing strategy that permits keys before the global high-water mark.

Agreed, fixed in 7a426e6: the consumer now refreshes each track with its own cursor (a LIST of that track's key prefix StartAfter its newest key), plus a delimiter LIST of the broadcast prefix to find tracks added since. The test list gains two tracks where a new key sorts before the other track's cursor, and a track added mid-recording.

- **Track properties.** A small `<prefix>/<track>/.info` holds the
properties TRACK_INFO needs (timescale, priority, max age), written before
the track's first object, so a consumer knows them before reading media.

P1 Badge Publish archive retention instead of the source max age

When the source has a finite Publisher Max Age, persisting and replaying that value makes old archived groups unavailable: the range plan explicitly clamps historical reads to the publisher max age in quest/m1/subscribe-ranges/model.md, so an archive recorded from a typical short-cache live track will refuse its history after that interval. The consumer needs to advertise the archive's retention policy, usually no age limit, rather than reproduce the source cache bound.

Agreed, fixed in 7a426e6: .info stores only timescale and priority. A served track advertises no Publisher Max Age limit (encoded 0), since the store's retention bounds what it holds, and DVR pruning is the publisher dropping early, which TRACK_INFO allows. The consumer tests gain history older than the source's max age still served. The producer still uses the source's max age to bound its recording delay, which is about the live cache.

continues after its last stored group.

P1 Badge Resume from the last stored frame instead of the next group

If the producer restarts while its last stored group is incomplete, continuing after that group permanently loses its remaining frames. This occurs for an oversized timed group split between objects and for an open untimed group whose object was rewritten by the bounded flush while the publisher continued writing the same group. Recovery must resume from the last persisted frame and merge or rewrite that group, with a restart-mid-group regression test.

Agreed, fixed in 7a426e6: each track resumes at Position(last group, stored frame count) through its own floor on the track::Consumer SUBSCRIBE_ALL yields. A timed track writes the rest as a new object keyed by its first frame's pts; an untimed track reads its newest object back and keeps rewriting it in place. A completed group yields nothing more, so it is one rule. Resuming after the group and re-recording from frame 0 are listed as rejected. SUBSCRIBE_ALL's plan now names the per-track floor and a resumed mid-group test through a relay. The producer tests add a restart mid-group for a split timed group and an open untimed group.

P2 Badge Encode track names as one object-key segment

Track names are arbitrary strings and can contain / or begin with ., as the existing rs/moq-archive/src/path.rs tests demonstrate. Interpolating a raw name into this layout makes a/b indistinguishable from nested directories and permits names such as .info to collide with metadata, so the consumer cannot reconstruct every stored track. Keep the existing canonical percent encoding, or specify an equivalent reversible single-segment encoding in the new format.

Agreed, fixed in 7a426e6: <track> keeps the existing canonical percent encoding from rs/moq-archive/src/path.rs, so a name with / stays one segment and nothing collides with .info. The consumer refuses a non-canonical segment, and the tests add names with / and a leading ..

Walkthrough

The quest documents replace the timeline-indexed archive plan with prefix-based recording and broadcast serving. They specify SUBSCRIBE_ALL and Time(pts) range requirements, add opt-in HLS catalog metadata, and revise history, DVR, and paced-replay plans to use stored broadcasts. The changes also remove several earlier archive proposals and update related roadmap entries.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 0fb19

This change only revises plan documents, so it does not alter running behavior. One design gap remains: seeking to a time inside a stored segment that holds several groups would end at the wrong point unless the plan uses the per-group timestamps. Fix this wording before implementation begins. Earlier concerns about restart gaps and missed objects during index refresh are now addressed in the plan.

Merge main (#5732 landed model ranges): delete model.md and move the
Time(pts) anchor into Dynamic range requests.

Review fixes:
- consumer: refresh with a cursor per track plus a delimiter LIST for new
tracks, instead of one prefix-wide StartAfter.
- producer/consumer: drop the source max age from .info; served tracks
advertise no Publisher Max Age limit.
- producer: resume at the frame after the last stored one, per track.
- producer: keep the canonical percent encoding so a track name is one
  key segment.

Merge summary

  • Replans the archive line around SUBSCRIBE_ALL: archive::Producer / archive::Consumer, per-track objects keyed by group and pts, the catalog's archive section replaced by an opt-in hls field, Time(pts) range ends, and SUBSCRIBE_ALL gating lite-07. Quests only.
  • Review round: per-track refresh cursors plus a delimiter LIST, no Publisher Max Age limit on served tracks (.info keeps timescale and priority), resume at the frame after the last stored one through a per-track floor on the yielded track::Consumer (maintainer confirmed over a wire start field), canonical percent-encoded track names, and Time(pts) resolved within the selected object.
  • Merged main twice: feat(net)!: carry group ranges on track::Subscription #5732 landed model ranges, so the Time(pts) anchor moved to subscribe-ranges/dynamic.md; quest: compressed tracks in moq-net #5885's compressed tracks sit beside SUBSCRIBE_ALL in lite07-finalize's Required.
  • Reviews: Codex and CodeRabbit on e2260cf, CodeRabbit on 0fb190b; every finding is fixed and acknowledged. quest check and CI pass on b86685c.
