Fallback cuts fall on a one-second grid of the unwrapped PCR timeline the epoch places, and the M2ts section's random_access and mux_rate are judged per two-second window on the same timeline, so importers sharing an epoch publish the same groups and the same section wherever each joined. Preserve the required passthrough discontinuity marker
With a shared epoch and a forward flagged PCR jump, this reaches Producer::discontinuity() in grid mode, whose grid branch emits no marker. drafts/draft-lcurley-moq-mpegts.md:322 requires the group after that jump to follow a hang discontinuity marker, while container::Consumer treats an unmarked forward timestamp jump as ordinary rather than an End or gap, so this silently changes the published m2ts wire contract without any version signal. Preserve a marker that is deterministic across aligned publishers, or version the protocol before omitting it.

Yes: on a shared epoch this PR publishes no marker for a flagged forward jump. The draft now states the exception, and the -01 changelog lists it (38190fb).
A marker is a group, and on the grid every sequence belongs to a second of the catalog clock: the jump's second belongs either to the open group, which the jump joins, or to the next start. That leaves no sequence for a marker that publishers which started at different times would agree on, and agreeing on sequences is the point of the mode. A consumer still sees the jump as a timestamp step, or as a sequence hole when it skips whole seconds; the hang draft already treats a hole as a playhead event. Neither the m2ts section nor its marker rule is in a published draft (-00 predates both), so no published contract changes.
This is the trade-off I'm least sure of. If you'd rather keep a marker on the grid, for example in the jump's own cell when no group holds it yet, I'll rework it.

Keeping no marker under aligned groups for now: a deterministic marker would need the jump's own second and drop that second's media, and the draft already states the exception. Leaving this open for the maintainer to confirm.

The draft and the catalog docs still described the fallback cut as one second from the group's start and randomAccess as latching false for the rest of the track. State the grid on the PCR count, whose wraps follow the catalog clock, the first-group watch, and that randomAccess and muxRate describe the latest two-second window. On CodeRabbit's outside-diff finding at On the grid, only the producer knows whether a start opens a new cell's group or joins the open one, so a check before the write would have to repeat the grid's placement in the passthrough. A joiner whose first PCR lands exactly on a window line can start its first group at a random access point in the PCR interval where its partner already cut on the grid, and so described that window as random access the partner had lost. Describe a window only when it starts strictly after the PCR the first group follows, so every group start in it is one both importers made. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

An unflagged repeated PCR exactly on a two-second line left the run's start on the line, so the window holding that empty interval was still measured without its packets. A same-epoch importer joining on the retransmitted copy of a flagged PCR on a grid line left its jump mark empty, so it fallback-cut a second later where its partner, which saw the original, did not. Publishers sharing an `--epoch` number their groups from their own start, so a moq-lite 07 relay that resumes a subscription on the other at the same group and frame lands on other media, and the exporter reads a rewind (moq-dev#4354). `Timebase::align_groups`, which the CLI calls with a shared `--epoch`, puts every media track the timebase reserves on a one-second grid of the catalog clock. A group opens at the first start in a second (a video keyframe, any audio frame, a data unit, a passthrough group start) and takes that second's number; later starts in the second join it, and a second with none gets an empty group. A process publishes nothing from the second it started in, so two fed one stream publish the same groups under the same sequences wherever each started. Part of moq-dev#4354. - A video cut on the grid now waits for a keyframe, as a break does: the pictures after it may reference what the loss left out. - An fMP4 fragment below its track's latest segment start ends the import as a rewind instead of joining the open group. - A TS clock break restarts a video track's grid even before it has published, since its deltas before the first keyframe move the watch. - The draft states that publishers numbering m2ts groups by the second publish no discontinuity marker for a flagged jump. Do not reopen a dropped fMP4 segment on its next fragment
When a grid-mode importer drops a segment's first fragment because it joined during that clock cell, track.group remains None, so this expression marks the next fragment of the same segment as another start despite track.segment having advanced. If a multi-fragment CMAF segment crosses into the next second, the late importer opens that second with media while a longer-running importer keeps the fragment in the preceding segment group and later uses the same sequence for empty or different content, defeating shared-epoch failover. In grid mode, a dropped segment must keep all later fragments non-starts until new_segment is true.

Fixed in a3e7afa: on the grid only a new segment starts a group now, so a segment whose first fragment was dropped stays dropped until the next segment. Off the grid nothing changes.
fmp4::import_test::a_dropped_segment_stays_dropped_across_a_second splits each segment of the shared-epoch source into two fragments, the second a non-keyframe, so three segments run into a second that starts none. It failed before the fix: a joiner published (602, 1) where the first importer's group 602 is empty. It passes now.

Advance section grids for audio-only TS programs
When an aligned TS import has audio but no video and carries a section-framed PID such as SCTE-35, this call never runs because it is inside the is_video branch. last_pts is exclusively the video clock, so release_sections keeps stamping every section with the unchanged start_pts; the first section initializes the grid's origin and every subsequent section at that same timestamp is silently dropped. The data-track grid needs to advance from the current audio PTS when the selected program has no video clock.

Fixed in a3e7afa: in a program with no video stream (decoded or clock-only), an audio PES now advances the section clock and the data tracks' grids, as video does otherwise. Without it, every section of an aligned audio-only program landed in the second the import started in, so the cue track published nothing at all.
ts::import::test::an_aligned_audio_only_program_publishes_its_cues failed before the fix (no cue published, seven expected). It passes now: every cue after the import's first second publishes at the PTS of the audio before it, in consecutive groups.
Off the grid, this also stamps an audio-only program's cues at the current audio PTS rather than the first PES's.

Bound fills after long runs without group starts
When a grid track receives regular non-start frames no more than 60 cells apart, such as video deltas or later fMP4 fragments in one segment, every call advances now, so this check never trips while last remains at the original group's cell. The next start then makes empty(at) return the entire accumulated interval and Producer::fill synchronously creates one group per skipped second; a crafted long GOP can therefore burst hundreds of thousands of groups despite FILL_MAX and stall the publisher or relay. Apply the cap to the distance from the last claimed cell, or fill incrementally as cells pass. (Written by GPT-5.6 Sol)

Fixed in 7f29860: a start now fills at most the 60 cells just before it, wherever the last group was, so a long run of joins can no longer build up an unbounded fill.
Capping the fill rather than the step keeps producers agreeing: one that watched fewer cells fills a suffix of what one running longer does. grid::tests::a_start_after_a_long_run_without_one_fills_at_most_the_bound checks that from three starting points. Without the cap, a start after 988 seconds of deltas filled 12..1000; it now fills 940..1000.

Document the shared-epoch marker exception
When --epoch enables grid grouping, this path intentionally emits no discontinuity marker. Although the draft now documents that exception, doc/setup/upgrade.md:35-38 still tells users that TS verbatim PES, sections, m2ts, and text always mark a break with one empty object, so users validating a shared-epoch rollout are told to expect a wire object that is never sent. Thanks for digging into this, @t0ms. The maintainer has decided to drop same-epoch importers entirely, and this PR will be closed once moq-dev/moq#5963 merges. Independently fed importers each see their own loss, start point, and history, so "same epoch, same content" breaks as soon as either one loses or reorders a packet, and a mid-group resume then splices two streams. Under the new plan each importer of a redundant pair mints its own epoch. The relay serves the newest, and consumers follow a failover as a marked restart ( So the one-second group grid isn't needed. Neither is the follow-up video-cut fix, which keeps a damaged group a prefix of the partner's. The 1+1 failover test from this PR's description carries over to the new quest, on distinct epochs. (Written by Claude Opus 5.5) |
Stacked on #5894 (passthrough cuts on the epoch's grid): the last two commits are this one, the rest that PR.
Problem
Two
moq importprocesses that share an--epochpublish the same clock and timestamps since#5625, and the same passthrough objects with #5894, but each numbers its groups from its own
start (
append_group). On moq-lite 07 a relay resumes a subscription on another route of the sameepoch at the newest group and frame it handed out, so the continuation lands on other media and
moq export tscan end on frame timestamp … below the previous group's start (#4354). It stilldoes with both publishers reading byte-identical input: on
main, a clean exit of the servingpublisher ended an exporter that way in seven of eight runs (below).
Approach
Every media track groups on the catalog clock's one-second grid, when the timebase asks for it.
Timebase::align_groups, which the CLI calls next toplacewhen--epochis shared. It isseparate from
placebecause a timebase is also placed with no partner to align with (theGStreamer sink places one on the wall clock), and a lone publisher should keep its groups.
container::grid::Grid. Each second of the catalog clock is a cell, numbered by its index. Agroup opens at the first start in a cell no group has taken (a video keyframe, any audio frame, a
data unit, a passthrough group start, an fMP4 segment's first fragment) and takes that index as its
sequence. Later starts in the cell join it, and a cell passed with no start gets an empty group,
so sequences stay consecutive for the HLS export, the archive and the segmenter. A process
publishes nothing from the cell it started in, since it may have missed that cell's first start;
after a break, the cells skipped get no group. A step of more than 60 cells counts as a break, and a
start fills at most the 60 cells before it, so neither a source that leaps hours ahead nor an
endless GOP opens a group for every second.
container::Producer::with_grid, set on every trackReserved::trackmakes on an alignedtimebase (the TS demultiplexer's audio, video, sections and verbatim PES).
seekdoes nothing onthe grid and
cutcloses no group, though a video track's cut waits for a keyframe, as a breakdoes. The rewind floors move on every start, whether its group opens, joins or is dropped, so a
rewind ends every importer alike, the one that has published nothing yet included.
Grid; seek skips grid tracks. A fragmentbelow its track's latest segment start ends the import as a rewind rather than joining the open
group.
so a second with no start gets its empty group, and a flagged jump starts a group only if its
second has none. A group that reaches the byte or object bound cannot split without moving the
partner's numbering, so it ends the import with

its first keyframe. The draft states the exception.
Alternatives considered: numbering each group by the catalog microsecond of its first frame keeps
sub-second GOPs apart, but the sequences go sparse, which the HLS export, the archive and the
timeline read as loss.

not foundreaches the relay before the broadcast is withdrawn ends at thesubscriber instead of moving. Signalling the idle publisher ended nothing on any build (23 runs).
On the previous base, with SIGKILL, the relay resumed the survivor at the killed publisher's group
and frame, and this PR made that group the same media on both (it asked for a catalog second, where
the other builds asked for the killed publisher's own count). But the resume came only after the
idle timeout, about 8 s of media later, past the exporter's delay, so every build survived its
serving kills except
main's passthrough lane, which ended both exporters once in two.(Written by Claude Opus 5.5)
