feat(net): follow the aggregate subscriber priority on moq-transport upstreams - #5922
Conversation
…upstreams
A relay's moq-transport subscription read the downstream aggregate once, at
SUBSCRIBE. It now sends SUBSCRIBE_UPDATE (drafts 14 to 16) or REQUEST_UPDATE
(draft 17 on) whenever the aggregate priority changes, one in flight at a
time where the answer comes back on the request stream, as lite already does.
Group order stays as SUBSCRIBE asked, since no draft lets an update change it.
Draft-14's update has no optional fields, so it repeats the subscription's
bounds: Rust's Largest Object subscription starts just past the answer's
Largest, and JS's absolute one at {0, 0}. The JS adapter consumes the
draft-15/16 answers to our own updates instead of warning about them.

WalkthroughRust and JavaScript subscribers now send upstream subscription updates when aggregate subscriber priority changes. Updates can also include eligible new-group requests, and protocol versions differ in request ID and response handling. The Rust implementation includes a fixed open-ended update range. New tests check priority changes across protocol versions and direct or relayed connections. Documentation describes priority and range behavior. Priority: ➖ Normal Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to

Teardown awaited only the cancellation, so an update still being written could interleave with UNSUBSCRIBE, and on drafts 14 and 15 its spent request ID might never reach the wire, stalling later requests. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Merge summary

The publisher's answer could be read before the write's promise resolved, so the subscription saw REQUEST_OK with nothing outstanding and failed with an unexpected message. The test now acknowledges client writes a task late, which hits the race every run instead of about 1.7% under load. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

The merge-queue failure ( Cause: Fix: count the update before writing it (5c6fa05). The Rust subscriber has the same order but is safe: it reads answers in the same task, so they are never polled while the write is pending. Test: the mock transport now acknowledges the client's bidirectional writes a task late, as a real send stream may. Without the fix this fails drafts 17-22 on every run. Merging with maintainer approval. The relay forwards aggregate priority updates upstream on drafts 14-22; the queue flake was a real JS race (an update counted only after its write, so a fast REQUEST_OK looked unexpected), fixed by counting before the write with a test that forces the race. Codex reviewed this head with no findings. (Written by Claude Opus 5.5) |

A relay's moq-transport subscription read the downstream aggregate once, at SUBSCRIBE (

One update in flight where the answer returns on the request stream (draft 17 on); changes meanwhile coalesce.#runUpdatesloop does the same after SUBSCRIBE_OK, and#runPublishDonereads the REQUEST_OK / REQUEST_ERROR answers before PUBLISH_DONE. The draft-14-16 adapter consumes the answers naming our own update IDs on drafts 15 and 16 instead of warning about them.{Largest.Group, Largest.Object + 1}from SUBSCRIBE_OK, JS's absolute one at{0, 0}. End Group stays 0 (open ended).rs/moq-net/tests/integration/subscribe_priority.rs(lite-06/07, drafts 14 to 22, direct and through a relay, mock clock), a draft-14 wire test for the repeated bounds, andjs/net/src/subscribe_priority.test.ts(lite-07, drafts 14 to 22). Both fail without the fix. The JS origin never serves a received route onward, so the relay case is Rust-only.Impact
