Problem

A browser caller chose WebTransport protocols with webtransport.protocols, and moq-dev/moq#5836 added a separate websocket.protocols for the fallback. Two lists can disagree, they spell ALPNs (moqt-22) where Rust and the bindings take version names (moq-transport-22), and any transport option forced a private reconnect loop, so choosing a protocol cost connection sharing.

Approach

  • One top-level versions list on connect, Connection and Reload, spelled like moq-lite-06, mirroring Rust's Client::with_versions / --connect-version and FFI MoqClientConfig::versions. Most preferred first; the default is every supported version except moq-lite-07-wip.
  • Each name maps to its ALPN for both WebTransport and the WebSocket (QMux) fallback. moq-lite-01, moq-lite-02 and moq-transport-14 share moql and are offered in SETUP, which now lists only the named ones, as Rust filters NEGOTIATED.
  • With an explicit list, a peer that selects an unoffered ALPN is refused, and so is a peer with no ALPN when no named version negotiates in SETUP.
  • Connections pool by URL plus the ordered list; equivalent lists share, a different order does not, and GOAWAY moves the key with the URL. Input is validated and snapshotted before a connection is acquired.
  • webtransport.protocols (released) and websocket.protocols (unreleased) are removed from the types and throw a TypeError when passed at runtime.

Decisions

The merge with main conflicted on the API shape:

  1. ✅ Top-level versions: string[] of version names, mirroring Rust and the bindings, mapped to ALPNs per transport. Remove the unreleased websocket.protocols, and omit protocols from WebTransportProps with a MIGRATE.md entry, so only one spelling exists. (recommended, chosen by the maintainer)
  2. Keep a top-level protocols of ALPNs. Remove websocket.protocols; keep webtransport.protocols, refused when both are set.
  3. Drop the top-level field and keep the per-transport fields from main; only fix pool keying.

Impact

  • Breaking JS API (@moq/net): webtransport.protocols becomes top-level versions with version names; WebSocketProps.protocols (never released) is gone. Entry added to js/net/MIGRATE.md.
  • Additive: ConnectProps.versions, Connection.Props.versions, Reload.versions.
  • Behavior: an explicit list now also applies to the WebSocket fallback and to the SETUP offer. Defaults are unchanged.
  • No wire format change.
  • Updated consumers: doc/lib/js/net.md, the JS interop clients (test/interop/clients/js-native) and test/drain. demo/web and the elements did not use the old fields.

Validation

  • Scoped just check passed on the final head, including all affected JS package checks and tests (@moq/net: 2226 pass).
  • New tests cover name-to-ALPN mapping, the WebSocket offer against a real local server, invalid and ALPN-spelled names, removed fields, an unoffered ALPN, IETF names, SETUP filtering for an ALPN-less peer, and pool identity across order, mutation and GOAWAY.
  • The browser interop gate (just test interop --subscribers js) is still blocked by npm Playwright expecting chromium-1248 while the Nix shell provides chromium-1243. That is tracked outside this PR and was not run here.

Walkthrough

Connection setup now uses ordered protocol versions for WebTransport and WebSocket. The connection pool keys shared entries by URL and ordered versions. Reconnects and redirects retain the versions. Documentation and integration tests use the top-level versions option.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 900c9

Callers migrating WebSocket settings lack guidance, and an explicit version choice can fail in browsers that report no negotiated subprotocol. Clarify both before merging, or accept the bounded documentation risk.

Resolve the conflict with #5836's websocket.protocols toward the shape the
maintainer chose: a top-level `versions` list of version names, mirroring
Rust's `Client::with_versions` and the FFI `versions`, mapped to ALPNs for
WebTransport and the WebSocket fallback. `webtransport.protocols` and the
unreleased `websocket.protocols` are removed and throw when passed. A peer
without an ALPN is offered only the named SETUP-negotiated versions.

A server may still pick a SETUP version the compatibility handshake did not
list; only the offer itself follows `versions`.

#5979 removed webtransport.protocols, so the sender threw before connecting and both JavaScript receive-credit arms timed out. Pass the version name instead of its ALPN.
