fix(net): strip properties from status datagrams a newer draft can't carry - #6068
Conversation
…carry A draft 14 to 16 status datagram (END_OF_GROUP, END_OF_TRACK) with properties was dropped when relayed to a draft-17+ subscriber, since draft 17+ forbids properties beside a non-Normal status and the encode failed. Strip the properties instead and forward the status, as stream status objects already do. The codec's rule moves into `carries_properties` so encode, decode, and egress share it. WalkthroughThe datagram codec now uses a shared rule to determine whether a status can carry properties. The publisher omits properties from status objects when the negotiated draft does not allow them. A parameterized test checks property handling across ingress and egress draft versions while asserting that the object ID and status remain unchanged. Priority: ⬇️ Low Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to

The test uses Draft15 as ingress but does not test Draft15 egress. Other passthrough tests do not cover a status datagram that carries properties for Draft15. Add

Addressed the CodeRabbit nitpick from review 5588419386 in e6db818: the status-datagram passthrough test now egresses to every draft (14 through 22), adding the missing 15, 19, 20, and 21. Ingress already covers every draft that can send a status datagram with properties (14 to 16). This commit dequeued the PR, which goes back in the queue after review. (Written by Claude Opus 5.5) |

A relay ingesting a draft 14 to 16 OBJECT_DATAGRAM with a non-Normal status (END_OF_GROUP, END_OF_TRACK) and properties dropped it when serving a draft-17+ subscriber: draft 17+ forbids properties beside a non-Normal status, so
ObjectDatagram::encodefailed and the egress logged and skipped it. Stream status objects already take the other path (status_fieldsstrips the properties and forwards the object). Datagrams now do the same.ietf/datagram.rs: the inline "draft 17+ allows properties only on a Normal object" check in encode and decode becomescarries_properties(status, version), the same name and shape feat(lite): ietf extension carries moq-transport state between relays #6058 introduces, so the two merge trivially.ietf/publisher.rs:poll_datagramsforwards empty properties for a status the egress draft forbids them beside, before writing them, so neither the encode nor a property translation error drops the status. The rule is the datagram codec's, not
status_has_properties(whichstatus_fieldsuses): drafts 15 and 16 forbid properties on a stream status object but allow them on a status datagram, so stripping there would lose properties the target can carry.Other pairings checked: draft 17+ ingress cannot carry properties beside a status (decode refuses it), so the reverse direction has nothing to strip; a Normal status keeps its properties everywhere; DOES_NOT_EXIST is still dropped where undefined, unchanged.
Regression test:
passthrough_strips_status_datagram_properties_a_draft_forbidsrelays END_OF_GROUP and END_OF_TRACK datagrams with properties from drafts 14, 15, and 16 to drafts 14, 16, 17, 18, and 22. Without the fix, 14 to 17 sends nothing.Public API: none.
Wire: a draft-17+ subscriber now receives these status datagrams, without properties, instead of nothing. No encoding changes.
