What

rs/moq-mux/src/container/ts/recovery_test.rs tests recovery from MoQ content that never arrives, or arrives late, after output began. Each arm:

  1. Imports a clip that FFmpeg generates in a declared profile.
  2. Records every group the import publishes.
  3. Republishes the groups on a paused clock under a fault schedule at the MoQ content boundary, optionally through a bottleneck.
  4. Grades the TS export against the ledger of what was delivered and when, not against what the export reports.

The grading checks that:

  • nothing undelivered or late goes out;
  • each picture keeps its dependency chain, and orphaned leading pictures stay out;
  • every chain the schedule left intact does go out;
  • every missing frame shows in trimmed, dropped or gaps;
  • continuity counters run unbroken, and the PCR signals a discontinuity exactly where the source declared one;
  • each point a receiver acquires at carries its own PAT and PMT, sent after the picture before it;
  • FFmpeg decodes the output from each of those points, presenting every picture that went out exactly once, and each matches the continuous source decode.

Profiles:

  • H.264 closed GOP, the same across the 33-bit wrap, and H.264 open GOP.
  • HEVC open GOP (CRA with RASL) and HEVC closed GOP whose IDRs lead two RADL pictures.
  • A splice of two encodes: one that drops from 320x240 to 176x144 at a keyframe, and one whose PCR declares a discontinuity there, jumping the clock 20 s.
  • Two minutes of closed GOP for the long arm.

Arms:

  • From the earlier draft: a clean path, a skipped group, a cut group, the video stalled past its deadline while audio runs, a stalled audio track, A/V skew, a skip across the PTS wrap, open GOP with a skip and a cut, and a mid-group join.
  • New:
    • A catalog that names the tracks 2.3 s in while the group in flight is cut short.
    • A skip and a cut across a resolution change.
    • A declared discontinuity with the group before the break cut and the one after it skipped.
    • A declared discontinuity whose marker is lost.
    • HEVC RASL orphans trimmed after a skip and a cut.
    • HEVC RADL kept after a skip and a cut.
    • A bottleneck at 150 kb/s, under the clip's 314 kb/s, behind a FIFO twice the delay deep that tail-drops, for 2 s. The arm asserts the queue overflowed and made pictures late, and that latency recovers.
  • Nightly: long_faults_hold_their_latency, #[ignore]d and run by just rs ts-recovery in ts.yml's nightly steps. It runs two minutes of the same faults plus that bottleneck, two seconds in every twenty. It fails if the latency's spread exceeds 160 ms or its mean drifts more than a frame between the first and last ten seconds. A failing arm keeps its export, ledgers and stats under $MOQ_TEST_RUNS/ts-recovery/, which the workflow uploads.

Negative controls make each grader fail on purpose:

  • a picture out after its chain broke;
  • a surviving group withheld;
  • counters that hide a loss;
  • a resumption with its PAT stripped;
  • a lost P picture that FFmpeg must refuse or decode differently.

The raw lane (release_test.rs) asserts its source's skip count: 1 for the skipped-group and cut-group arms, 0 for the late-object arm. It uses a test-only Release::gaps(), which moq-dev/moq#5849's Release::stats().gaps will replace.

Bugs the arms found, fixed here

  • A hole after a group made that group's tail late. The decode clock held a group's last pictures until the next group's frames settled their DTS. A group's end now settles them, once the source has nothing more right now. A track's last group still takes the end-of-stream path.
  • A cut group's delivered prefix was dropped. The crate-internal consumer Event gains Cut, emitted at eviction. The TS export settles on it like a group end; fMP4 ignores it.
  • The import lost the last picture before a declared PCR discontinuity. A break salvages each PID's open PES, and H.264/H.265 never salvage, since an unbounded video PES cannot be shown complete. But the packet that carries the flag also starts a PES on its own PID, which proves the one before it whole. That PES is now flushed on the old clock before the break.
  • Loss next to a declared discontinuity sent the old timeline out late. The export laid each PCR slot on the jitter buffer's current clock. Once the next generation was acquired, the previous generation's remaining slots mapped into the past. The PCR then ran unflagged about 19 s ahead in a burst of PCR-only packets, and the previous generation's audio went out after its decode time. jitter::Buffer::at now takes the generation, so a draining generation keeps its own clock.
  • HEVC RADL pictures were trimmed as orphans. After a join or a hole, the export trimmed every picture presented before the recovery keyframe. A RADL picture references only its IRAP, so the export now keeps it, by NAL type. RASL and H.264 leading pictures are still trimmed.

Each fix has an arm that fails without it, checked by reverting each one.

Public API and wire impact

  • No public API change and no wire change.
  • Crate-internal: container::consumer::Event::Cut and Item::Cut; jitter::Buffer::at takes a generation.
  • Behavior:
    • The TS export emits a group's tail, or a cut group's prefix, that it used to drop behind a hole upstream.
    • It keeps HEVC RADL pictures after a join or a hole.
    • It keeps the previous generation's PCR clock until that generation has gone out.
    • The TS import publishes the picture before a declared PCR discontinuity.

Decisions

Settled by the maintainer on 2026-10-20:

  1. A whole-path stall lets held frames out late (a_path_stall_drops_what_it_made_late)
    • ✅ moq-net stamps each frame's local arrival instant, and the export judges on it. This is its own quest, arrival-stamps.md from moq-dev/moq#6147. The arm stays #[ignore]d with its reason naming that quest, and moq-net's API is unchanged here.
    • Treat a poll after Pending as arriving now. Tried; it breaks two_legs_* in export_timing_test.rs.
    • Keep it and document the bound.
  2. Open-GOP resumption leaves an H.264 frame_num gap
    • ✅ Accept, and grade per acquisition segment: the export never presents a broken chain.
    • Rewrite frame_num on resumption, or signal a discontinuity there.
  3. The arms' delay
    • ✅ Keep the arms at 1 s, export ts --delay's default. The false jitter leap at 500 ms (a PCR discontinuity rewinding 475 ms after a skip) is a follow-up.
    • Widen the arms to 500 ms here.
  4. Remaining arms
    • ✅ Finish them in this PR.

Picked as the recommendation without a separate prompt:

  • RADL is kept by NAL type rather than graded as optional. The fix is local (radl in export.rs), and trimming decodable pictures at every join and hole loses content for nothing.
  • Impairment is modelled at the MoQ content boundary on a paused clock: a rate under the media's behind a deep, finite FIFO that tail-drops. This makes the nightly arm deterministic and decodable. The real-network lanes in ts.yml (--rate 7000000, and CUBIC behind a 250 ms queue) stay the transport and pacing evidence. Adding decoded-content grading to them is not done here.
  • Loss around PAT/PMT is graded on the semantic lane: every acquisition point must carry its own tables. The raw lane carries tables in place and never inserts them (the epic's 2026-10-11 decision), so its existing omission arms already cover it.

Follow-ups

  • The stall fix above: arrival-stamps.md, which un-ignores a_path_stall_drops_what_it_made_late.
  • The 500 ms false jitter leap (decision 3).
  • In the long arm, the jitter buffer's rate estimate read 5,551 ppm once, at about 95 s, which counted one out_of_tolerance. The source clock is exact, so this is a false alarm for anyone monitoring that counter. The final estimate was 0.00015 ppm and output was unaffected. The long arm does not assert on it yet.

Checks

  • cargo test -p moq-mux: all pass (1,585 lib tests). The ignored stall arm still fails, as expected.
  • just rs ts-recovery (nextest, the nightly recipe): passes in about 6 s, and keeps evidence under MOQ_TEST_KEEP=1.
  • just fix passes. just check lints clean; its test stage hit one unrelated flake per run (moq-cli import_stats_count_what_each_rendition_wrote, then moq-net a_draft_16_cancel_ahead_of_the_answer_ends_only_its_request), each passing alone.
  • just test interop not run: no wire or FFI change.
  • The nightly workflow was not dispatched.

…ledger

Add recovery_test.rs: each arm imports an FFmpeg-generated H.264/AAC clip,
republishes its groups on a paused clock under a fault schedule (a group
skipped or cut, the video or a track stalled, a join, A/V skew, the PTS
wrap, open GOP), and grades the export against the ledger of what was
delivered and when: nothing undelivered or late goes out, every surviving
dependency chain does, every loss is counted, and FFmpeg decodes the output
from each acquisition point as the continuous source decode's pictures.
Negative controls exercise the graders' failure paths.

The arms found two export bugs, fixed here:

- A group's end now settles the DTS of the pictures the decode clock holds,
  so a hole after it no longer makes its tail late.
- A group cut short upstream now says so (consumer Event::Cut) as soon as it
  is evicted, so what it delivered goes out instead of waiting on the next
  group and being dropped.

A whole-path stall still lets held frames out late, because an export
nothing wakes judges arrival on when it last ran; that arm is ignored
pending a decision.

The raw lane asserts its source's skip count for the skipped, cut and late
arms.

Adds the remaining arms to recovery_test.rs: a late catalog, a resolution
change, a declared PCR discontinuity with loss on either side or its marker
lost, HEVC RASL and RADL, and a bottleneck below the media rate behind a
deep tail-dropping FIFO. Every acquisition point must now carry its own
PAT and PMT. A two-minute fault run is wired into ts.yml's nightly steps
through `just rs ts-recovery`, keeping a failing arm's evidence under
$MOQ_TEST_RUNS.

Fixes the arms found:
- The import dropped the last picture before a declared PCR discontinuity:
  the packet carrying the flag starts a PES that proves its predecessor whole.
- After a loss next to a declared discontinuity, the export laid the
  previous generation's PCR slots on the next generation's clock, running
  the PCR unflagged ahead and sending the old audio late.
- The export trimmed HEVC RADL pictures as orphans after a join or a hole.

Walkthrough

The changes propagate lost-group cuts through consumer and source events, update MPEG-TS export and timing behavior, and add a recovery test suite for faulted and congested inputs. The suite grades delivery, timing, continuity, decoding, and source-picture identity. A just recipe and scheduled non-PR workflow step run the long tests. Test documentation now describes the coverage and invocation, while the recovery quest specification and its links are removed.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 67846

The HEVC RADL retention check can accept a malformed access unit that ends in a truncated NAL. This only affects corrupted input, and the fix is a small change to the classifier. The remaining changes (lost-group cuts, recovery tests, CI wiring) show no concrete merge-blocking problem.

P2 Badge Require payload before flushing at a discontinuity

When an adaptation-only packet on the PCR PID has both discontinuity_indicator and the PUSI bit set, this condition flushes the pending PES even though the packet cannot start a new PES. In particular, an unbounded H.264/H.265 PES is then treated as complete and may be published, whereas timebase_break() would correctly drop its partial video payload. Check that the packet actually contains a PES-start payload, or reject this malformed PUSI combination, before taking the complete-PES path.

Valid. A flagged discontinuity flushed the PCR PID's pending PES whenever PUSI was set, but pes_packet ignores PUSI on a packet with no payload, so the two disagreed. The flush now requires a PES-start payload, matching pes_packet. I did not reject the combination: ISO/IEC 13818-1 gives PUSI no meaning without a payload and forbids it only on null packets, so refusing it would break streams the PES path already accepts. Regression test flagged_break_without_payload_drops_the_open_picture fails without the fix (2 units published instead of 1). Fixed in c1c140b.

A flagged discontinuity flushed the PCR PID's pending PES whenever PUSI was
set, even on a packet with no payload, so an unbounded picture open across
the break went out as complete instead of being cut short.

P2 Badge Include the incoming frame in the queue-capacity check

When the existing backlog is at or just below self.queue, this check admits the frame even if its own serialization time pushes the buffered work past the configured finite capacity; it also admits a frame when the queue is exactly full. Large video objects can therefore survive when this bottleneck is supposed to tail-drop them, causing the recovery ledger and the “queue overflowed” assertions to grade a different delivery schedule than the configured finite queue. Compute the post-enqueue backlog, including slot.size / self.rate, before deciding whether to omit the frame.

Valid. The check compared only the backlog ahead with the queue depth, so a frame was admitted whenever the queue was not already overfull, even when its own bytes overflowed it. It now admits a frame only if it would leave the link within queue of arriving, its own serialization included. the_bottleneck_admits_only_what_fits fails without the fix. Every recovery arm, including the nightly long arm, still passes. Fixed in 6784665.

Reject RADL classification when NAL parsing fails.

map_while(Result::ok) stops at the first parsing error. A valid RADL slice followed by a truncated NAL can therefore pass the RADL check. Require every NAL to parse before classifying the access unit.
