quest(m1): finish the C++ and OBS nightly package proof - #6161
Conversation
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The first scheduled Nightly after #6006 checked all four packaged C++ archives and built both OBS plugins against them, and the Linux OBS lane passed. Record the proof in the first C++ release quest. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

WalkthroughThe C++ release quest now documents nightly archive and OBS plugin checks, plus source-build validation before tagging when the FFI pin is unset. The tag remains gated on Codecs and the epoch rename. The separate package-proof quest and related references are removed. The m1 work list adds ARM audio-device validation, CI housekeeping, and smoke-test dependency updates. Priority: ⬇️ Low Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to

Validate the source-build path before clearing the blocker
With FFI_VERSION still unset, a cpp-v* tag takes the source-build branch in release-cpp.yml, but the post-#6006 Nightly cited here passed reuse-native: true; the cited source-build run predates the new archive-consumer and OBS-against-archive gates. Removing the prerequisite therefore allows the first tag to exercise an unproven path on macOS and Linux ARM. Keep the proof open, or run the release workflow without reuse-native, until the path the tag will execute passes on all four hosts.

Agreed: the 2026-10-20 nightly checks the prebuilt-input package, and the source path a tag runs with FFI_VERSION unset has never gone through the archive and OBS checks.
Fixed in 4f5c9d7. I didn't keep a nightly-only blocker. Instead, quest/m2/release/cpp-release.md now has the first tag start with a release-cpp.yml dispatch without prebuilt-test on the ref being tagged. That run does the tag's source build and just cpp check --archive on all four hosts, then both OBS builds, and publishes nothing. It proves the exact ref that gets tagged, which a nightly on main cannot.
I didn't take the other route of dropping reuse-native from the nightly. That would reverse the documented same-run-input design in .github/ffi.md (#5740), and that path becomes the tag path once the pin lands. Locally, the source-built x86_64 Linux archive passes just cpp check --archive.

The nightly packages the same-run prebuilt moq-ffi input, but a tag with FFI_VERSION unset builds moq-ffi from source. Give release execution the release-cpp.yml dispatch that runs that path on all four hosts. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Outcome: the quest is complete. The 2026-10-20 Nightly passed all four Codex's P2 is fixed in 4f5c9d7: the nightly checks the prebuilt-input package, not the source build a tag runs with Decision made without the maintainer: the source-path proof moved into release execution instead of dropping (Written by Claude Opus 5.5) |
Resolve the quest/m1/README.md conflict: main removed the finished Nightly media players entry and this branch removes the C++ and OBS package proof entry, so both go. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Finishes
quest/m1/cpp-package-check.md. The quest asked for one scheduled Nightly onmainafter moq-dev/moq#6006. That run is green, so this PR deletes the quest.Evidence
Nightly 2026-10-20, on
f13283b, which includes #6006:Check packaged archivestep (just cpp check --archive) passed on all four targets: x86_64 and aarch64 Linux, aarch64 macOS, and x86_64 Windows MSVC.just obs package --moq-archive.just obs cipassed. That covers the MoQOutput and moq_source suites (settings reconnect, invalid settings), the session-report classification and spark tests, and module unload. The run failed overall because of other lanes (audit, benchmarks, media players, gst
.deb/.rpm, Linux relay and CLI release builds). Those are outside this quest.Gap moved to release execution
The nightly calls
release-cpp.ymlwithreuse-native: true, so it packages the same-run prebuilt moq-ffi input. Acpp-v*tag withcpp/moq/FFI_VERSIONunset builds moq-ffi from source instead. That source path last packaged all four targets in the 2026-10-16 Nightly, before the archive and OBS checks existed (Codex P2).quest/m2/release/cpp-release.mdnow owns that proof. If the pin is still unset, the first tag starts with arelease-cpp.ymldispatch withoutprebuilt-teston the ref being tagged. That dispatch runs the tag's source build and archive check on all four hosts, then both OBS builds, and publishes nothing.Changes

Checks
quest check: okjust check: passedjust cpp package --target x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu, thenjust cpp check --archive) passed, including the C++17 and coroutine probes. The other three hosts and OBS can only be verified on CI.Follow-ups
reuse-nativewhileFFI_VERSIONis unset. That gives continuous source-path coverage for four extra moq-ffi builds a night, but it reverses the same-run-input design documented in.github/ffi.md(moq-dev/moq#5740). Recommendation: skip it, since the pre-tag dispatch covers the only tag that would use the source path beforecpp-ffi-reusepins a prebuilt input.(Written by Claude Opus 5.5)
