fix(net)!: bound timestamps to 2^61 - 1 so lite-05/06 can carry every one - #6168
Conversation
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…racks lite-07 TRACK_INFO gains `Unverified (8)`. A timed track received over lite-05/06 or moq-transport is unverified, and relays preserve the mark, so the rewind check runs on received groups only where every hop could vouch for them. Replaces the session-level received mark in Rust and js/net, and completes quest/m1/lite-time-provenance. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A receiver drops every timestamp it gets over moq-lite-05/06, whose send times look like media time, so those tracks arrive and are forwarded untimed. The lite-07 TRACK_INFO Unverified byte is gone. Timed tracks received over moq-transport stay unchecked and are served to moq-lite untimed. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

… one lite-05/06 zigzag a group's first timestamp from zero into a QUIC varint, which holds at most 2^61 - 1. A larger timestamp was accepted by the model, then the lite-06 encoder failed the group stream before its header was visible, leaving the subscriber waiting forever. Bounding Timestamp itself refuses it at the write, and a received timestamp past the bound is a malformed track on every version, so a relay never holds one it cannot forward. Tests that read timestamps back over lite-05/06 now expect them dropped, or move to lite-07 where the timestamps are the point. The test relay also accepts lite-07 for a client that opts in. TrackInfo::serve replaces the From conversion now that compression depends on the version. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Outcome: the lite-06 hang was the fixture's timestamp, not its sequence. lite-05/06 cannot zigzag a first-frame timestamp of 2^61 or more, so this PR bounds (Written by Claude Opus 5.5) |

An unchecked track is served untimed to moq-lite, which on lite-05/06 means each frame and datagram carries its send time. The publisher still wrote the frame's own timestamp, a possible moq-transport arrival time. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

WalkthroughThe maximum timestamp is now 2^61 - 1. Timestamp operations reject values above that limit, and received timestamps above it fail the group as a malformed track. Tests and timestamp clamping use the new bound while preserving sequence values beyond it. Migration guides and protocol documentation describe the limit and its handling. Strip legacy timestamps from TRACKS listings
When receiving a TRACKS stream on Lite05/06, TrackInfo::into preserves the wire timescale even though this change intentionally treats every track received on those versions as untimed. The subscription path later clears info.timescale, so listing consumers observe a timed track while subscribing to that same track yields untimed frames; relays can also advertise this inconsistent metadata downstream. Apply the version-aware has_media_time conversion here as the subscribe path does.

Declined: TRACKS is lite-07 only. Version::has_tracks() is false for lite-01 through lite-06, so poll_listing aborts a lite-05/06 listing with Unsupported before opening a Tracks Stream, and TracksEvent refuses to encode on lite-06. A lite-05/06 session never reaches TrackInfo::into here, so no timed listing can disagree with an untimed subscription.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Give Go callers a representable clamp.
A frame timestamp is a *time.Duration (Lines 198-201). 2^61 - 1 microseconds exceeds the range of that nanosecond-based type. If a caller follows this instruction when converting unbounded microseconds to time.Duration, the conversion overflows before the write. Specify a clamp that also respects the time.Duration range, and distinguish it from the Rust timestamp bound.

Completes lite-06 max sequence.
Root cause
The browser fixture's lite-06 hang was never about the group sequence. It also wrote
timestampUs = sequence, and lite-05/06 zigzag a group's first timestamp from zero into a QUIC varint, which holds at most 2^61 - 1.Timestampaccepted up to 2^62 - 1, so the model took 2^62 - 1, the lite-06 encoder failed the group stream before its header was visible, and the subscriber waited forever. Reproduced natively over the moq-net memory transport, no relay needed:wide_sequence::largest_quic_sequence_reaches_the_subscriberwith the timestamp uncapped fails withmoq-lite-06 relayed=false sequence=4611686018427387903 hung.Fix
Timestampnow stops at 2^61 - 1, so every timestamp is encodable on every version and the refusal happens at the write (writeFramethrowsTimeOverflow) instead of silently on one session's egress. A received timestamp past the bound (lite-05/06 via a later delta, lite-07 via its 64-bit varint, moq-transport via its property) fails as a malformed track, so a relay never holds one it cannot forward to a lite-05/06 peer. This follows the draft's precedent of saturating route cost at 2^62 - 1 so it stays forwardable to lite-06.Considered and rejected: keeping the 2^62 - 1 range and refusing per session on lite-05/06 egress. The publisher's API cannot know which versions will carry the track (a relay fans it out to many), so the refusal would land on a subscriber as a group or subscription error far from the write, and needs a recovery contract (reset after the header, or SUBSCRIBE_DROP, which moq-dev/moq#6143 owns). Bounding the type makes the unencodable value unrepresentable.

#6150 landed first and drops every timestamp received over lite-05/06 (the decoders still read each one to stay in step). This PR keeps its receive bound there: a running timestamp past 2^61 - 1 is malformed whether or not the value is kept, and
a_received_timestamp_past_2_61_is_refusedpins it.Decisions
The quest asked for an explicit decision on the refusal boundary before changing behavior. The maintainer chose:
Timestampat 2^61 - 1 everywhere (this PR). Refused at the write on every version; a received larger one is a malformed track. Costs half the range: nanosecond timestamps from the Unix epoch overflow in 2043 instead of 2116, which lite-05/06 already cannot carry.js/netneeds no mirror change: itsTimestampalready refuses values pastNumber.MAX_SAFE_INTEGER(2^53 - 1), both when built and when decoded, so it never produces or holds one past 2^61 - 1.Follow-ups
