Problem

A live TS source that revises its PMT left the import's track names meaning other content. A PMT that retyped the private PES on a PID from 0x06 (KLVA) to 0x15 (metadata) kept the pesPacket track, its mpegts.tracks entry still said 0x06 with the old descriptor, and the 0x15 payloads published under the same name. A later PMT that dropped the PID left the entry and the track in the catalog. programDescriptors and the program identity were captured once, so a later CUEI change, or a PAT naming another transport_stream_id, went unseen.

Consumer: moq import ts and moq-srt on a live contribution feed whose PMT revises (a regional opt-out adding audio, a subtitle PID coming and going, an audio language retag), read by Hang players and moq export ts through the catalog.

Approach

The import half of the PMT/PAT lifecycle quest, as decided there:

  • Each PMT is compared per PID with the one in force: stream_type, the ES descriptor loop, and whether the stream is read as sections (which follows CUEI). A PID whose listing changed or vanished ends its route the way end of input does. The PES it began goes out, held PES and sections are placed from the PCRs so far or counted unplaced (refusing the import, as end of input does, if no media timestamp has anchored them), the track finishes, and its rendition and mpegts.tracks entry leave the catalog. A changed stream then opens under a new name through the existing route selection. The comparison reads content, not version_number, so the 31-to-0 wrap needs nothing.
  • programDescriptors follows each revision in place, and a CUEI change re-routes the 0x86 PIDs by the rule above.
  • A PAT naming the program under another transport_stream_id or program_number refuses the import, since the carried SI describes the first.
  • Health stats keep a dropped PID's row, under the route it ended on and with what its end drained, and no longer count it as quiet. A PMT listing a PID twice refuses the import.
  • A reopened route takes a fresh name, which the broadcast reserves for its life, and every revision republishes the catalog to every viewer, so the import refuses a source once it has applied 65,536 revisions: routes ended by the PMT or by losing and regaining its PCR, and program descriptor changes. That is under 10 MB of names, and years for a feed revising its PMT 50 times a day. The import reads the catalog's programDescriptors when it starts, so its first PMT replaces any it was seeded with, even by none, and republishes nothing when they match.
  • Draft: a publisher MUST NOT change an entry's pid, descriptors, or carriage record in place; programDescriptors follows the PMT; transportStreamId and programNumber do not change.

scte35_inject built the SCTE-35 fixtures by inserting one augmented PMT, so every later PMT stopped listing the cue PID and would now retire its track. The example rewrites every later repeat of the PMT to match, keeping each packet's continuity counter, and refuses an input whose PMT PID carries anything else. bbb5s.ts, ffmpeg.ts and gst480i.ts are rewritten the same way (same sizes, same continuity).

Eighteen tests, each failing without its change: a retype and a descriptor-only change of a private stream (the old track finishes with its held PES placed, the new name records the revision); a dropped stream whose PID returns under a new name; revisions across the version wrap; an MP2 language retag reopening its rendition; program descriptors following the PMT, with CUEI removed and restored; identity changes refused under automatic and explicit program selection; a dropped section PID keeping its stats row; a dropped PID reporting the section route it ended on; a dropped audio route counting the frame its end drains; a PID listed twice refused; PMT, PCR and program descriptor churn refused past the bound; a first PMT without program descriptors clearing those the catalog held; and a section PID and a private PES stream dropped before the media clock anchors, each refused and left for the import's abort to end with its cause; and the same two dropped past a lone PCR, each counting its unit unplaced as end of input does.

Impact

  • Catalog, no shape change: a TS import removes a mpegts.tracks entry, and its rendition, when the PMT drops or revises its stream, and publishes a revised stream under a new track name. programDescriptors changes as the PMT does.
  • moq import ts, moq-srt: a PAT that changes the program identity, a PMT listing a PID twice, and a source past 65,536 revisions each end the import with an error. The first two went unchecked, and a churning source grew the broadcast without bound.
  • moq export ts: until the export follows PMT revisions, a revised or returning stream reaches it as a new track name, which it refuses ("TS track layout changed after PAT/PMT was emitted"). Before, it carried on under a PMT describing the old stream. A dropped stream's track finishes and the export reads it to its end, as before.
  • Draft mpegts: the three publisher rules, with a changelog line.

Alternatives

The quest's rejected options: a new broadcast epoch on any ES layout change, which makes every subscriber reacquire every track; and refusing every layout change, which stops the ingest on common live transitions. Import and export could ship together. The export half follows separately because it changes the export files #5949 is changing; if the interim export refusal should not reach main alone, this PR can wait for it.

Follow-ups

  • The quest's remaining work becomes PMT export, where the export rebuilds the PMT at the next version_number and the TSDuck round trip gains a mid-stream revision, and PAT changes: a moved PMT PID, programs added, removed and returning, and the open question of a PMT that never arrives. pmt-lifecycle.md is deleted and its references repointed.

Gate: just ci's steps run one by one on macOS, where main fails moq-carla-bridge's rustdoc and sh/drafts/publish.test.sh (a /var versus /private/var temporary path), so those two were skipped. @moq/net's hostile-path memory test also fails here at times, on main's unchanged code (333 MB of growth against a 256 MB bound); this PR changes no JavaScript. main's redundant_importers_switch_through_bufferbloat_on_lite_07 failed under the suite's load and in two of six runs alone; its feed never revises its PMT, so none of this PR's paths run in it.

P2 Badge Reject duplicate PIDs before caching a PMT

When a PMT contains two entries for the same PID with conflicting types or descriptors, this collection keeps the last Listing, while the routing loop below keeps the first PES route because ensure_stream returns as soon as that PID is present. If a later PMT corrects the table to contain only the last entry, self.listed already matches it, so end_route never runs and subsequent packets continue through the wrong codec and track identity. Reject the duplicate rather than caching a state that disagrees with the selected route.

Fixed in a64f30f: the PMT keeps each PID's first entry before anything reads it, so the cached listing, the route and the health register agree. A later PMT keeping only the second entry is then a change, and the first's track gives way to one for the second (a_pid_listed_twice_is_routed_by_its_first_entry, which fails without it). I kept the PMT rather than refusing it: a duplicate is malformed, but ending a live ingest on it costs more than reading the first entry.

Changed in 605059c: a PMT listing a PID twice now refuses the import, replacing the first-entry rule above. The repository's rule is to refuse malformed input rather than continue on a guess, and no route or cache can then disagree about which entry holds. a_pmt_listing_a_pid_twice_refuses_the_import replaces the first-entry test.

P2 Badge Preserve stats when retiring section routes

When the revised or dropped route is section-framed, removing its SectionStream here leaves no row in retired_stats. stats() only seeds rows from retired_stats and currently active streams or sections, so after an initially section-framed PID is dropped, the units retained in Liveness have no row to attach to and its cumulative statistics disappear; PES routes do preserve such a row through retire_stream. Preserve a retired .ts data row for this branch as well.

Fixed in a64f30f: ending a section route leaves a .ts data row in retired_stats, as retire_stream does for a PES route, so the PID's delivered units stay in stats() (a_dropped_section_route_keeps_its_stats_row, which fails without it).

Walkthrough

MPEG-TS import now tracks PMT listings and program descriptors, retires routes when PMT entries change, and rejects changes to the selected program identity. Tests cover revised tracks, PID reuse, descriptor changes, and PMT version wrap. Documentation describes PMT export and PAT lifecycle behavior, including planned program retirement and new epochs. The SCTE-35 injector rewrites later standalone PMT packets with the augmented declaration and preserves their continuity counters.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to e77ee

The SCTE-35 injection example can emit transport streams with stale or wrong PMT contents when a later PMT changes its stream list or when the input has several programs. This affects users of the example and any test fixtures it generates, not the core importer. Fix the later-PMT rewrite before merge, or explicitly limit the example to a static single-program PMT.

P1 Badge Bound PMT revision churn before minting tracks

For a long-lived network TS source that changes a carried PID's descriptor or type in every new PMT version and sends one unit per revision, this predicate ends the current route on every cycle and the loop below mints another unique_track. Written unique names are not reclaimable: BroadcastState::sequences keeps their namespaces for the broadcast lifetime (rs/moq-net/src/model/broadcast.rs:113-117), and Sequence::is_unused is false after any group was written (rs/moq-net/src/model/track.rs:266-269). Consequently a hostile or flapping SRT publisher can grow this map without bound after all old tracks finish; cap or refuse the churn, or make retired one-shot unique names reclaimable.

Fixed in 605059c: the import counts every route it ends, by a PMT revision or by refusing a stream (a PMT that loses and regains its PCR reopens one), and refuses the source once it has ended 65,536 (Import::MAX_ENDED_ROUTES). That bounds the names a churning source can reserve to under 10 MB per import, and a feed revising its PMT 50 times a day would take years to reach it. Reclaiming written unique names in moq-net would remove the bound's reason, but it changes the sequence namespace's guarantee for every publisher, so I left it out of this PR. pmt_churn_past_the_route_bound_refuses_the_import and pcr_churn_past_the_route_bound_refuses_the_import fail without the count.

P2 Badge Record the section route as the latest stats type

When a PID is first decoded or PES-framed, then retyped to a section, and finally dropped, retired_stats already contains the older route, so this or_insert_with leaves its suffix and class unchanged. With no active section left for stats() to merge, the report claims the most recent route is still, for example, .mp2/audio instead of .ts/data, contrary to the stats::Stream current-or-most-recent contract; merge a new section row here as retire_stream does.

Fixed in 605059c: ending a section route merges a fresh .ts data row through the same keep_stats that retire_stream uses, so the row names the route the PID ended on. a_dropped_route_reports_the_route_it_ended_on (MP2, then private sections, then dropped) fails without it, reporting .mp2/audio.

P2 Badge Snapshot self-describing audio stats after finishing

When a PMT revises or drops AAC or legacy audio while its last complete frame is waiting for a successor, retire_stream snapshots Resync before stream.finish() drains that frame. Draining calls Resync::published(true) and increments unconfirmed, but the stream is then dropped and only the pre-finish snapshot remains, so the stats omit exactly the substituted frame that retirement published; finalize the stream before storing its route counters.

Fixed in 605059c: end_route finishes the stream before keeping its counters, so the frame its end drains is counted. a_dropped_audio_route_counts_the_frame_its_end_drains holds an MP2 frame that began in a carried tail and fails without it (unconfirmed 0, not 1). retire_stream still snapshots first: its other callers only meet an ignored route or abort a refused one, so nothing there is drained.

P2 Badge Do not drop placed PES before the media clock anchors

When a PMT revision drops or changes a private PID before the program's first PTS, PesPacketStream::release returns (0, 0) because timebase.offset() is still None, leaving even PCR-bracketed PES in held; this line then counts every held PES as unplaced and dropping stream loses it. Without the revision, a later PTS on another stream calls release_placed and publishes the same PES, while EOF and clock-break paths explicitly refuse this unanchored state, so this transition silently loses valid metadata instead of preserving it until the anchor or returning an error.

Fixed in 701ef60: end_route refuses the import when a section or private PES is still held after settling, as end of input and a clock break do ("reached a PMT revision without a media timestamp"), instead of counting it unplaced and dropping it. Keeping it for the anchor would publish on a track whose route has already finished, and the same unanchored program is refused at end of input anyway. a_section_route_dropped_before_the_media_clock_refuses_the_import and a_private_stream_dropped_before_the_media_clock_refuses_the_import fail without it.

P1 Badge Bound descriptor-only PMT catalog churn

For a network TS source that changes a non-CUEI program-level descriptor on every PMT while keeping every ES listing unchanged, this branch opens catalog.modify() on every table, but no route ends and MAX_ENDED_ROUTES never advances. Each guard serializes and emits the complete catalog in Hang, compressed Hang, and MSF (catalog/producer.rs:210-233), while catalog republishes make viewers update media subscriptions (catalog/producer.rs:81-84), so a hostile publisher can sustain catalog serialization and viewer-wide subscription churn at PMT packet rate indefinitely; cap/refuse or coalesce descriptor-only revisions as well.

Fixed in 3cfc92b: a program descriptor change now counts toward the same per-import bound as an ended or refused route, renamed MAX_REVISIONS (65,536), so a source that flips a descriptor on every PMT is refused after that many catalog republishes. descriptor_churn_past_the_revision_bound_refuses_the_import fails without it.

P2 Badge Apply the first empty PMT descriptor set

When Import is created over a catalog whose mpegts extension is already seeded with program descriptors and the source's first PMT has an empty program_info, self.program_info is also initialized empty, so this comparison skips the authoritative first write and leaves the seeded descriptors advertised and re-exported even though the source omitted them. The previous program_recorded sentinel always applied the first PMT; keep an explicit unseen state before using equality to suppress later repetitions.

Fixed in 3cfc92b: the import reads the catalog's programDescriptors when it is constructed and compares each PMT with those, so a first PMT without descriptors clears seeded ones, and a first PMT that matches what the catalog already advertises (an importer taking over a catalog) republishes nothing. the_first_pmt_records_its_program_descriptors_even_when_empty fails without it. main's sentinel also skipped an empty first PMT, so this was not a regression, but it is fixed either way.

P2 Badge Abort removed routes before propagating revision failures

When a PMT drops a section-framed PID before any PTS has anchored the timebase, section has already been removed from self.sections when this check returns an error, so it is dropped without finish or abort; a subsequent Import::abort cannot reach it and an already-subscribed consumer observes Error::Dropped instead of the revision failure. The private-PES check below has the same ownership path, so retain or explicitly abort each removed route before propagating the error.

Fixed in ef89cf0: end_route keeps each route in its map until it has finished and removes it only then. A refusal on the way, whether no media timestamp, a failing release or a failing finish, therefore leaves the route for Import::abort, which ends its track with the cause. a_section_route_dropped_before_the_media_clock_refuses_the_import now asserts that the section route is still held after the error. a_private_stream_dropped_before_the_media_clock_refuses_the_import subscribes to the private track first and checks that the track ends with the abort's error rather than dropped. Both fail without the fix.

P2 Badge Keep one-PCR routes until their placement resolves

When a section or private PES completes after the first PCR and its PMT entry changes before a second PCR arrives, even an already-anchored timebase does not help: Span::settle cannot extrapolate from one sample, release leaves the unit in held, and this check aborts the entire otherwise valid ingest. EOF instead advances the placement generation and counts the same unit as unplaced, while a later PCR could bracket and publish it, so retirement should either defer until that PCR or apply the settled/unplaced handling rather than reporting a missing media timestamp.

Fixed in 3c8b541 by the second option: end_route releases a route as if its timebase ended there, as end of input does after settle_placement resets the placement. A unit that the settled PCRs place is published, one that no PCR interval places is counted unplaced, and the import refuses only when no media timestamp has anchored the clock. A later PCR could still have placed such a unit, but the import already counts a unit that begins before the first PCR as unplaced, and deferring would keep a second set of routes open past the revision. a_section_route_dropped_past_a_lone_pcr_counts_its_section_unplaced and a_private_stream_dropped_past_a_lone_pcr_counts_its_pes_unplaced drop each kind of route after one PCR and an anchoring picture. Both fail without the fix with "reached a PMT revision without a media timestamp".

Merge check on head 6c82b366c7072b63b888bbef224523f9daaf91e7:

  • All ten Codex threads were answered with fixes in a64f30f5e through 3c8b541c9; I checked each against the current import.rs (duplicate PID refused, section and audio stats kept after their route ends, MAX_REVISIONS covering ended routes and program descriptor changes, the first PMT's descriptors applied against the catalog's, routes kept until finished so abort reaches them, and a lone-PCR unit counted unplaced).
  • Codex reviewed this head with no findings.
  • origin/main merges cleanly; on the merged tree cargo test -p moq-mux --all-targets (1602 passed), cargo clippy -p moq-mux --all-targets -- -D warnings and quest check pass. The merge queue runs the full gate.
  • Kept for fix(mux): give every TS PID a declared route #6252: the route retirement in end_route and fixture::Mux::pmt_at.
  • Interim: moq export ts refuses a revised or returning stream until PMT export lands.
