WalkthroughThe change adds control-message byte accounting by tier, direction, and class across MoQ Lite and IETF sessions. It propagates session statistics through protocol startup and stream handling. The relay exposes per-tier wire-byte counters and per-tier, per-class control-byte counters. Tests cover codec accounting, protocol versions, metric scrapes, and session closure. The metrics documentation distinguishes payload, transport, and control-message counters. Pass the session's stats context into lite and IETF start instead of deriving it from optional origins, so a session with neither still counts its control traffic. Classify draft-14 TRACK_STATUS_OK/ERROR by version, since later drafts reuse 0x0E for NAMESPACE_DONE. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Rename the metrics to moq_relay_control_{tx,rx}_bytes_total, mirroring the wire counters, and return a named stats::Bytes { tx, rx } from Snapshot::control instead of two bare integers. The counts include size prefixes, so "body" was inaccurate.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Classify the draft 14 request-specific replies by their request class.
control already maps 0x02 to Subscribe on drafts 14 and 15, because those drafts define it for one request type only. The same reasoning applies to two other draft 14 IDs.
0x05is SUBSCRIBE_ERROR on draft 14. From draft 15 it is the shared REQUEST_ERROR.0x07is PUBLISH_NAMESPACE_OK on draft 14. From draft 15 it is the shared REQUEST_OK.
Neither ID is in the match, so draft 14 sessions count both under Other. Draft 14 PUBLISH_NAMESPACE_ERROR (0x08) counts as Announce, so a draft 14 announce refusal and its acceptance land in different classes. Draft 14 is a default negotiation target, so moq_relay_control_*_bytes_total skews for those sessions.
Add a draft 14 branch next to the SubscribeUpdate exception. Extend draft14_track_status_ids_are_track_info to assert both IDs.

Exclude request-stream selectors from RX byte totals
On draft 17+ request streams, Framed consumes the message-type varint together with the length-prefixed body before setting r.control, so Reader charges the selector as part of the control message. The sending path writes that selector separately with writer.varint(...) and charges only the typed body, causing every modern response read through Messages to report RX one varint larger than the peer's TX; Update and NamespaceUpdate have the same asymmetry. Account only the length prefix and body so these counters consistently exclude selectors.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in 4e76967: the decoder now records where a counted message begins, so Framed, FollowUp, Update, NamespaceUpdate, and a GOAWAY read ahead of a response count their length and body as the sender does, not the type selector. Covered by request_stream_messages_count_without_their_type.
(Written by Claude Opus 5.5)
The sender writes a request stream's type selector apart from the message and never counts it, but Framed, FollowUp, Update, NamespaceUpdate, and a GOAWAY read ahead of a response counted it on receipt, so RX ran one varint over the peer's TX. The decoder now records where a counted message begins. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Count wrapped Lite selectors consistently
When decoding an AuthReply or a Lite03+ SubscribeResponse, the wrapper consumes its discriminator before invoking the nested Message::decode, so this start excludes that byte from RX accounting. Encoding performs the whole wrapper in one Writer::buffer call, and the nested message's control marker therefore charges the discriminator to TX; every auth or subscription response consequently reports RX one byte below the corresponding TX value. Set the control marker at the outer wrapper's start, or encode and account for the discriminator separately on both paths.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in 2054555: a decode again counts everything it consumes, so AUTH_REPLY and SUBSCRIBE_RESPONSE count their discriminator as the sender's single encode does. Only the selector a request stream writes apart is left out, through a separate uncounted prefix. control_counts_consumed_messages_once now covers a wrapped AuthReply.
(Written by Claude Opus 5.5)
Recording each message's own start dropped the discriminator AUTH_REPLY and SUBSCRIBE_RESPONSE wrap around a lite message, which the sender's single encode counts. Count whatever a decode consumes, leaving out only the selector a request stream writes apart. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Merged main twice and re-queued at 2054555.
(Written by Claude Opus 5.5) |
Problem
The ops endpoint exposes payload traffic without the transport totals or control-message attribution needed to diagnose idle and control-heavy sessions.
Approach
Export the existing session wire registry as per-tier TX/RX counters, including internal sessions. Add bounded control-message classes in the same session registry and expose their lifetime totals only through the host snapshot and ops metrics.
Count complete buffered encodes (tx) and consumed codec values (rx), including prefixes handled inside those values. Exclude separately coded selectors, raw media writes, and transport overhead. IETF framing can complete before request validation. Shared reply/update IDs use
other. Draft14-16 receives count at the physical multiplexer, with virtual readers disabled; typed and adapter-generated sends each count once.Hostile-peer cost: each session holds a fixed 9x2 array of atomics. Classes are a closed enum and the tier is server-chosen, so no counter state grows with peer-chosen keys.
Impact
moq_relay_wire_{tx,rx}_bytes_total{tier}andmoq_relay_control_{tx,rx}_bytes_total{tier,class}.moq_net::stats::Control(class),moq_net::stats::Bytes { tx, rx },Snapshot::control() -> Vec<(Tier, Control, Bytes)>, and a defaulted crate-private Lite message classification constant. No MoQ wire-format or published stats-frame change; no billing or payload-meter change.doc/bin/relay/http.mddescribes the new counters; per-version accounting lives in thestats::Controlrustdoc.Alternatives
Reuse the shared registry instead of parallel packet accounting. Count successful codec output rather than accepted physical writes, which would require partial-write spans and would still exclude transport overhead.
Validation
mainthree times: resolvedlite/session.rsconflicts with the GOAWAY deadline and receive-drain changes, thenietf/subscriber.rsafter moq-dev/moq#6348 moved stream opens ahead of request-ID allocation (kept main's structure and re-attached stats after each open). Classified the newly merged SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS and PUBLISH_SKIPPED astrack_infoand counted the PUBLISH streams opened to answer SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS.lite::Config/ietf::Configcarry the session stats context, so a session with neither origin still counts control bytes (control_counts_without_originsfails without it); the IETF classifier takes the version so draft-14 TRACK_STATUS_OK/ERROR (0x0E/0x0F) count astrack_infoand draft 14-15 SUBSCRIBE_UPDATE (0x02) assubscribe; the server counts the client SETUP it pre-reads under the stats the handshake is admitted with (accept_request().with_stats()), via a size recorded at the pause; GOAWAYs on the modern control stream and modern REQUEST_UPDATE decodes count.just checkafter the latest merge: js and rs passed; its flake step cannot build the GitHub runner image here (unshareis not permitted).just rs test -p moq-net -p moq-relay --no-fail-fast: 3385 passed, 20 skipped. other, because a typed encode only knowsT::ID. A per-message class on the IETFMessagetrait, matching lite'sMessage::CONTROL, would fix it and limit the ID map to raw receive paths.with_stats. Attaching stats once at the session's stream open/accept would stop new message paths from going uncounted.Decisions
