fix(net): an empty replacement track ends past its predecessor's groups - #6376
Conversation
A replacement producer that finished before writing anything declared its end at group 0, below groups an earlier producer of the same name had written. A relay still caching those groups received a SUBSCRIBE_END below a received group and closed the whole session with a protocol violation. finish() (and the JS close()) now end at the name's sequence namespace when it is ahead, and a replacement's live edge starts there, so its own readers still end at once. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
WalkthroughProducer end positions now account for the shared sequence boundary, including sequences written by earlier producers. JavaScript and Rust tests verify that an empty replacement rejects earlier end positions and ends at the next group. A relay integration test checks the replacement’s completion behavior and confirms that the client session remains open. Priority: ➖ Normal Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to

Apply the predecessor boundary to explicit finishes
When a replacement's shared namespace is already above zero, callers can still use Rust finish_at(Position::group(0)) or JS finishAt({ group: 0, frame: 0 }). Those paths validate only against the replacement's local max_sequence/#received, so they accept an end below its predecessor; a relay that cached the predecessor's group then receives a contradictory end, treats it as a protocol violation, and can close the whole session. Apply the same shared-namespace lower bound, or reject such ends, in both explicit-finish APIs rather than limiting the fix to finish()/close().

Fixed in 28a93c9: finish_at and JS finishAt now refuse an end in or below a group an earlier producer of the name wrote (ProtocolViolation). That boundary is recorded when the track joins its namespace, so a mid-group end on the replacement's own groups is still allowed. A received copy is exempt: the wire subscribers also call finish_at, and a peer's end is judged by the session, not by this process's earlier copies.

finish_at (and JS finishAt) accepted an end below groups an earlier producer of the name wrote, the same contradiction finish() made. Record what the predecessors wrote when a track joins its namespace, and refuse an end in or below it on a locally produced track. A received copy still answers to its publisher's end, which the session judges. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Keep the inherited boundary synchronized
After removeTrack(name), the removed producer remains writable while createTrack(name) can bind a replacement to the same TrackSequence. If the old producer writes another group after this assignment, #inherited remains the earlier snapshot, so the replacement's close() emits a stale end and finishAt() accepts that same stale boundary below the name's newly written groups; a relay that cached those groups can treat the end as a protocol violation and close the session. Read the current shared namespace when validating or declaring the end, or prevent the removed producer from writing.

Fixed in 298adfe: dropped the join-time snapshot. finish(), the live edge, and finish_at/finishAt read the shared namespace when they run, so writes from a removed producer that is still writing count. finish_at refuses an end whose final sequence is below the namespace's next, which still lets a producer end mid-way through its own last group.
(Written by Claude Opus 5.5)
A snapshot of the predecessors' writes taken at join went stale while a removed producer kept writing to the shared namespace. Read the namespace when ending instead, and refuse an explicit end whose final sequence falls below it, which still lets a producer end mid-way through its own last group. Reject ends inside the predecessor's last group
When the predecessor wrote group 5, sequence.next() is 6, so a replacement's finish_at(Position { group: 5, frame: 1 }) produces final_sequence() == 6 and passes this < check even though it truncates content already published under that group name. A relay that cached more than one frame from group 5 will reject the resulting end as a protocol violation; the mirrored finishAt() check in js/net/src/track.ts has the same defect. Compare the full position against whether the boundary belongs to this producer, rather than comparing only its rounded-up final sequence.

Fixed in ef213e8: finish_at and finishAt refuse any end before or inside a group below the namespace's next, unless it cuts mid-way through this producer's own last group. { group: 5, frame: 1 } after a predecessor wrote group 5 is now a ProtocolViolation, and the tests cover it in both languages.

An end mid-way through the last group an earlier producer wrote rounded up past the namespace and passed, though it truncates published content. Only this producer's own last group can be cut mid-way. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Prevent predecessor writes after declaring the replacement end
When removeTrack(name) leaves the old producer writable, the replacement can close here at boundary N and the old producer can then publish group N or later, advancing the shared namespace after the replacement's end is frozen. A relay that continues or caches the old subscription and later subscribes to the finished replacement then receives an END below a cached group and can close the session for a protocol violation. Fresh evidence beyond the earlier stale-snapshot report is this reverse ordering: the predecessor advances after close() or finishAt(); the mirrored Rust finish/finish_at paths have the same gap, so the shared end must reserve the namespace or later predecessor writes must be refused.

Fixed in e923230 for JS, the only side where this can happen: once a replacement claims the name, the removed producer's writes fail (track <name> was replaced) and its live edge stays where the namespace stood at the handoff. So it can't land a group past the replacement's end, and an abort doesn't count the replacement's groups as its own progress. Each case has a test that fails without the change.
Rust has no such overlap: insert_track refuses a name while a live track holds it, and a reclaimed entry's producer is closed, so a replacement only exists once its predecessor can no longer write.

Exclude successor writes from an older producer's edge
If an older producer remains alive after removeTrack, writes by its replacement advance #sequence.next even though those groups never arrive on the older producer. For example, an empty old producer with finishAt({ group: 5, frame: 0 }) can have a replacement write group 5 and then, when the old producer aborts, #settled() sees this live edge as 6 and suppresses the abort, so its subscriber ends cleanly despite receiving none of the promised groups; the Rust edge() mirrors this behavior. The inherited edge needs to include predecessor output without treating later producers' independent output as this producer's progress.

Advance subscriber progress to the shared live edge.
When a replacement inherits a namespace ahead of its own writes, finishAt({ group: 1, frame: 0 }) wakes recvGroup() but does not complete it. The sink's received remains 0, while #complete() requires it to reach 1. The read can remain pending until close(). Apply the live edge when binding the namespace, declaring the end, and creating a late sink.

Restrict the own_last exception to the name's last group.
own_last compares only with this track's max_sequence. It does not check the shared state.sequence, which can be ahead of max_sequence when an earlier producer wrote later groups. A mid-group end in this producer's last group then passes the guard even when the name has later groups. set_end checks only fin <= max_sequence, so it stores that end. For example, { group: 3, frame: 2 } gives a final sequence of 4, which lies below an earlier producer's group 8.

The JS finishAt in js/net/src/track.ts (ownLast, near line 1608) has the same exemption and may need the same bound.

Problem
A dynamic handler serves a track, the relay's copy goes idle and cancels upstream, then a later reader asks again. The handler answers with a replacement producer that finishes before writing anything (its first append is refused as a reused sequence, or its demand left first).
track::Producer::finish()ended it at group 0, ignoring the name's sequence namespace. The relay still caches group 0 from the first producer, so the SUBSCRIBE_END lands below a received group:subscribe end below a received group,ProtocolViolation, and the relay closes the whole session, taking every other subscription on it down too.Approach
finish()ends at the name's namespace when it is ahead of this producer's own writes, and a replacement's live edge starts there, so its own readers end at once instead of waiting for groups only an earlier producer wrote.finish_at()refuses an end before or inside a group below the namespace (ProtocolViolation), unless it cuts this producer's own last group on a locally produced track.
