quest: plan the 2026-10-22 security audit follow-ups - #6402
Plans quests for findings from a security audit of the relay, auth, stats, ACME, and WebRTC paths. Every finding was checked against source on main before planning.
Quests (all m1)
quest/m1/clean-close-reason.md [XS]: supervise polls session.closed() before lease.ended(), so a clean close that also withdraws in-band credentials isn't recorded as Unauthorized plus an application failure. Credential::changed also polls the decider's verdict ahead of the withdrawal, so a revocation already pending when the transport closes is still recorded.
quest/m1/metric-tier.md [S]: tiers are refused unless they are slash-separated [A-Za-z0-9._-] paths. The check runs on grants, refusals, serve --tier, relay config, and js/auth. Every rendered label value is also escaped. This is a breaking change for moq-auth and @moq/auth, so it adds MIGRATE entries.
quest/m1/acme-renewal-budget.md [S]: renewal records BadAuth failures against the startup budget and stops polling the ACME state until the window clears.
quest/m1/webrtc-mdns-resolver.md [S]: one owned resolver task per peer resolves each distinct .local name once, sequentially, replacing one detached task per candidate line.
quest/m1/stats-group-linger.md [XS]: documents and tests that at depth >= 1 a lingered group ends held presence, prefix, and requested tracks.
Also updated quest/m2/relay-prometheus-client.md: label escaping now lands in m1, so its fallback and its stale "every label is an enum" note are removed.
Not planned:
server_name taken from Host/:authority: fixed by moq-dev/moq#6509.
STUN source-port-0 DoS: set aside by the maintainer.
Of these, the ACME, WebRTC, and in-band refresh code exist only on main. The tier interpolation and the stats linger are inherited from release, and neither is backported, because only an auth server sets a tier and the linger behavior is the intended contract.
Decisions
Prometheus tier injection: how should m1 fix it?
Escape at render
Validate tier in Grant
✅ Both
Pull prometheus-client to m1
Tier validation rule?
✅ Path of [A-Za-z0-9._-] segments
Refuse escape-needing chars only
Literal path like label
Stats depth >= 1 linger contract?
✅ Group linger ends held tracks (document and test)
Holds keep the group alive
WebRTC .local fan-out bound?
✅ One resolver per peer
Cap candidates per SDP
Placement?
✅ Standalone m1 quests
New m1 epic
Into release-audit epic
Not prompted (followed the audit's proposed fix): biased; with session.closed() first, plus the decider's verdict ahead of the withdrawal in Credential::changed (from review); ACME renewal pauses polling at the failure limit while the previous certificate keeps serving.
Public API and wire impact: none in this PR (quest files only).
Adds m1 quests for a clean close misreported as a revocation, metric-safe
tiers, the ACME renewal failure budget, a per-peer WebRTC mDNS resolver,
and the stats group linger contract. The server_name finding is already
owned by the auth contract quest.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The changes add quest documents for five findings from a 2026-10-22 security audit and list them in the quest index. The documents describe proposed handling and tests for clean session closes, metric-safe tiers, ACME renewal budgets, WebRTC mDNS resolution, and stats-group linger behavior. An existing Prometheus client quest now refers to the metric-tier plan and revises its no-go condition. These are planning-document changes; the summaries do not report implementation of the proposed behavior.
Priority: Low
Merge Risk: Low · up to 4484a
This change only adds planning documents, so nothing ships or changes at runtime. Several plans have small wording gaps that should be tightened before implementation begins, mainly when the ACME failure budget is cleared and how clean closes interact with pending revocations.

Name the durable renewal boundary.
The renewal plan should state that failures clear only after CertCacheStore, matching Acme::issue. DeployedNewCert alone is not durable, so clearing the budget there can lose the persisted failure state across a restart.
Suggested wording
- A successful renewal clears the failures, as issuance does.+ A successful renewal clears failures only after `CertCacheStore`,+ matching `Acme::issue`; `DeployedNewCert` alone is insufficient.

Qualify the clean-close outcome.
The Goal says a close is never recorded as Unauthorized. The Plan later requires a non-Dropped revocation that was already pending to retain its failure kind. State that exception here and in the README entry. Otherwise the summary can suppress a real revocation.
Suggested wording
- A session that closes on its own is recorded as a session close, never as- `Unauthorized` with an application failure, even when the close also- withdraws every in-band credential at the same moment.+ A session whose close only withdraws its in-band credentials is recorded as+ a session close, not `Unauthorized`. A non-`Dropped` revocation already+ pending at the close retains its revocation reason and failure kind.

Define how an empty tier is handled under the new grammar.
The plan's rule covers only non-empty tier segments (quest/m1/metric-tier.md:22-26). It does not say whether an empty tier value is refused or treated as the default tier. The default tier renders as an empty tier="" label, so an auth server that sends an empty tier has no defined outcome. State the rule in the plan before implementation.

Include session rows in the lifetime condition.
GroupPublisher::lingered counts both traffic and session rows. The Goal currently says that the broadcast lives only while it has traffic. A group with session rows but no traffic would not match this documented contract. State the condition using both row types, or reference the exact lingered predicate.

Offerer::add_candidate and Answerer::add_candidate take &self, so callers can invoke them concurrently for one peer. A bounded resolver channel limits queued candidates, but extra callers can still wait indefinitely for capacity while the resolver handles a slow lookup. Serialize these calls, or bound both admission and waiting callers. Ensure shutdown cancels in-flight resolution and admission waits; a semaphore with an unbounded waiter queue is not sufficient.

Extend the no-go condition to all series-contract changes.
The goal requires the same metric names, labels, and types, but this condition mentions only renames. A migration that changes label sets or metric types could still proceed under the stated condition and break dashboards or alerts. Make the no-go condition cover any incompatible series change.
