fix(net)!: every range and fetch starts at a group's first frame - #6465
An application range starting mid-group on a compressed track, requested over moq-transport draft-17+ with Flate negotiated, failed with Lagged: the requester's copy began at frame N and could not inflate. Plain tracks had the same gap without the error, since a requester asked a publisher for frame N of a group it held nothing of. The root cause is that the public API let an application ask for part of a group at all, while a group is the unit of decodability.
Change
Every range and fetch starts at a group's first frame (maintainer decisions below). track::Anchor::Absolute names a group, so a subscription can no longer start or end mid-group, on any track or protocol. With no mid-group start left to serve, the compressed-prefix widening, the IETF mid-group resume stitch (TrackState.resume, the ingest's dropped-object skip, Reader::poll_skip), and the window's per-range frame bounds are deleted.
Resume hole-fill stays, crate-private.group::Fetch::frame_start is pub(crate) and with_frame_start is gone: only a route change sets it, filling a group after the head another route already delivered (the "MAY take the start of the group from it" case). track::Fill::start() and Fill::frame_start(sequence) (which replaced group::Request::frame_start() in moq-dev/moq#6171) stay public, since a handler still serves a peer's partial FETCH and a hole fill.
Publishers still honor a peer's wire frame bounds. The wire is unchanged, so lite and IETF publishers widen an incoming Frame Start/End to whole groups in the model and cut the frames per group when serving (position_group, GroupSlice). The lite publisher now cuts datagrams against both frame bounds itself, by the Object ID a relayed moq-transport datagram keeps (frame 0 otherwise), which the model's frame window used to do; the IETF publisher already did.
Downstream: moq-hls fetches a part's whole group and skips frames locally with group::Consumer::with_range; moq-archive resumes recording from the group start and skips the frames it already stored (it already did the skip).
Bindings:MoqAnchor::Absolute (moq-ffi) and moq_anchor (moq-c) drop frame; the py, swift, kt, go, and dart wrappers and the generated Dart bindings follow. js/net already carried group ranges only, so it needs no change.
Lite draft: SUBSCRIBE Frame Start MUST be 0 unless the subscriber already holds every frame below it, from this publisher or another; the Positions section says a subscription starts at a group's first frame, and a publisher's protocol-violation rule now names only the checkable Frame End rule. Lite-07 changelog bullet. No encoding change.
Quests: stale frame-range plans updated (compress, e2ee wrapper, broadcast epoch, subscribe ranges, JS ranges, resolved demand, release audit), and subscribe-ranges/bounded-tail.md deleted: a request no longer ends mid-group, so its copy cannot be cut short.
Test
a_start_group_arrives_whole runs every pair of lite-07, moq-transport-17, 18 and 22 hops through a relay, compressed and plain, with the group starting before or after the subscription (the joining FETCH/fill path), and checks group 5 arrives whole from frame 0. frame_bounds_cut_datagrams_by_object_id covers the lite publisher's datagram cut at both bounds, public and relayed. Tests for application frame ranges are deleted with the feature, as is head_fetch.rs, whose peer subscribing mid-group is no longer expressible. The moq-c, moq-archive, and moq-transcode tests that drove a handler with a public with_frame_start lose that case: a partial FETCH now reaches a handler only from a peer or a hole fill.
just check (lint, drafts, JS, and every Rust test including moq-c, moq-archive, moq-hls, moq-transcode, and moq-ffi), just test interop --all, and quest check --base origin/main pass on the merged head.
Re-merged main through 4ccf05aac6 after the queue dropped this PR on a conflict (MIGRATE.md only; every one takes main's version and the notes moved to the Impact section). At the first merge, through 4d29eb1ec0, just check and just test interop --all (172 checks) pass; after the final merge, which brought moq-dev/moq#6535 and moq-dev/moq#6600, cargo nextest run -p moq-hls -p moq-relay (606) and quest check pass.
The queue dropped 76c0f9e75b on a release-audit quest conflict. Re-merged main through f206893047: the quest link keeps this PR's narrowed owner note and main's removal of the finished QPACK quest, and main's new range_anchors.rs test (moq-dev/moq#6519) now anchors on a group sequence (Anchor::Absolute(0)). Before the last merge (packaging only), just check passed every module (including test rs, test js, test py) and just test interop --all passed; after it, cargo check --workspace --all-targets passes.
The queue dropped 28582003d5 on a conflict with moq-dev/moq#6138's with_range cursor setters. Re-merged main through 3d2530d74e: the group-only set_bounds becomes main's with_start/with_end/with_span builders over a group sequence, the resume reader's raise_start_to/start_at/end_at become main's set_range, and the IETF resume-stitch tests main rewrote stay deleted. moq-archive's two past-end EOF checks, which had passed a frame start past a complete group's end, are restored in the new shape: fetch the whole group (evicted, or after the reader finished) and read it with with_range(len + 1..), which must end cleanly. just check (every selected module, 8838 Rust tests), just test interop --all (172), and quest check pass on the first merge; cargo nextest run -p moq-net and clippy pass after the second.
The queue dropped bf6ebe31c5 on a conflict with moq-dev/moq#6171, whose track::Fill replaced group::Request. Re-merged main through 74b9ff5e63. #6171 asked each fill from the frame its reader's range started at, and split a run of misses at every range starting mid-group (Window::frames, Window::partial_starts); with whole-group ranges a reader's fill always starts at frame 0, so those and the reader window in miss::Asking are deleted, along with #6171's three tests of mid-group reader starts (an_earlier_reader_widens_a_queued_fill_to_its_head, a_fill_starts_at_its_own_ranges_frame, an_adjacent_range_starting_mid_group_heads_its_own_fill). A fetch_group with a crate-private frame_start still asks a fill from that frame, and fills still widen to the earliest frame joined. moq-transcode's mid-group fetch test stays deleted, and the finished subscribe-ranges/dynamic.md quest takes main's deletion. just check (every selected module, 8896 Rust tests), just test interop --all (172), and the moq-archive past-end checks pass on the merged head, which Codex reviewed with no major issues. A last merge brought moq-dev/moq#6529 and fixed CodeRabbit's stale Absolute(group, frame) in the subscribe-ranges quest; the Rust tests (8906), Python, and quest check pass after it.
Public API and wire impact
Breaking. How to migrate (moved here from each package's MIGRATE.md, which PRs no longer write since moq-dev/moq#6610):
moq-net: a group is the unit of decodability, so every range names whole groups. track::Anchor::Absolute takes a group sequence instead of a Position: replace Anchor::Absolute(Position::group(n)) with Anchor::Absolute(n), and as an exclusive end, Position::after_group(n) with n + 1. group::Fetch::frame_start and with_frame_start are gone: fetch the whole group and skip frames with group::Consumer::with_range.
moq-ffi: MoqAnchor::Absolute drops frame: pass MoqAnchor::Absolute { group }.
moq-c: moq_anchor drops frame, which changes its ABI: MOQ_ANCHOR_ABSOLUTE always starts at the group's first frame. Remove any frame you set.
cpp/moq: MoqAnchor::Absolute drops frame; set only group.
Wire encoding: none. Behavior: our subscribers always send Frame Start 0; publishers serve a peer's frame bounds as before. Draft: lite-07 Frame Start MUST above.
Decisions
✅ Compressed tracks are not special; every subscription starts at the beginning of a group. Maintainer, verbatim: "compressed tracks should not be special. we MUST always start at the beginning of a group. If we're resuming from another route, we MAY take the start of the group from it."
✅ Remove app frame ranges. Maintainer: "Remove app frame ranges". The group-start rule applies to applications too, so public ranges, fetches, and binding anchors name whole groups. The internal resume hole-fill (FETCH frame_start) stays, crate-private, as the "MAY take the start of the group from another route" case. This retires the earlier "sparse groups stay whole" question, since no reader windows frames inside a group any more.
A moq-transport subscriber now widens a mid-group SUBSCRIBE start to the
group's first frame when it lacks the compressed prefix, as lite-07 does.
A cold request learns compression only from SUBSCRIBE_OK, so on a session
that negotiated it every mid-group start widens.
Groups whose ingest pins Object IDs to frame ordinals (a resumed start or
its fill) now get the reader's frame window, so an application on an IETF
hop reads only the frames it asked for, on plain tracks too.

A moq-transport mid-group subscription to a compressed track widens to frame 0
fix(net): widen moq-transport mid-group starts on compressed tracks
Oct 23, 2026
Implemented and pushed; kept as a draft for the two decisions in the description (cold-request widening on Flate sessions vs TRACK_STATUS first, and leaving sparse passthrough groups whole).
Checks: just check passed lint, compile and every test except moq-uring, whose integration tests fail on worker setup with RLIMIT_MEMLOCK because concurrent sessions on this host share the limit. That failure is environmental and unrelated. A rerun of moq-net and moq-relay passed: 3439 tests. just test interop was not run because nothing on the wire changed.
Compressed tracks are no longer special: a mid-group start widens to
frame 0 on every track and protocol unless a cached copy holds the frames
below it, as when resuming from another route. The lite draft's SUBSCRIBE
Frame Start says so.

fix(net): widen moq-transport mid-group starts on compressed tracks
fix(net): start every upstream subscription at a group's first frame
Oct 23, 2026
Applied the maintainer decision: compressed tracks are no longer special. Every upstream subscription, lite or IETF, new or resumed, starts at its group's first frame unless a cached copy holds the frames below the start (the resume-from-another-route case). The lite draft's SUBSCRIBE Frame Start now says so. Both decisions are recorded with ✅ in the description.
Checks: just check passed lint, drafts, JS and every Rust test except moq-uring, whose worker setup fails on this host's shared RLIMIT_MEMLOCK; a rerun of the workspace without moq-uring passed 9715 tests. just test interop --all passed except one cpp -> js-native-node audio timestamp gap after the JS player skipped a slow group at load average ~50; that pair passed on rerun.
Subscription ranges and absolute anchors now use group sequences, and subscribers request groups from their first frame. Lite and IETF paths no longer use saved frame positions to trim resumed groups. Frame-level filtering remains in lite serving paths for individual datagrams, and HLS export fetches whole groups before applying its frame range. Bindings, tests, and documentation were updated to reflect these changes.

Drop frame-level application ranges: track::Anchor::Absolute names a group,
group::Fetch::frame_start is crate-private (only route-change hole fills set
it), and the bindings' absolute anchors lose their frame. Publishers still
honor a peer's wire frame bounds, cutting frames per group.

fix(net): start every upstream subscription at a group's first frame
fix(net)!: every range and fetch starts at a group's first frame
Oct 23, 2026
Checkpoint at cec4011. I stopped early because usage ran out, so the PR is back in draft.
Done. Applied "Remove app frame ranges". track::Anchor::Absolute now names a group, and group::Fetch::frame_start is crate-private, so only resume hole-fill sets it. with_frame_start is gone. In the bindings, MoqAnchor::Absolute and moq_anchor drop frame, and the py, swift, kt, go and dart wrappers follow. The Dart bindings are regenerated. Every affected package has a MIGRATE entry. moq-hls and moq-archive now fetch or subscribe whole groups. In the lite publisher, a non-zero Frame Start now excludes the start group's datagram. I updated the lite draft wording and the quests, deleted bounded-tail.md, and merged origin/main. The PR body has the full list.
Checks
Passed: cargo test -p moq-net --all-features, cargo check --workspace --all-features --tests --benches, just drafts check. In just check, the rs, drafts and quest modules pass.
Failed: just check fails in test js (test-changed). I haven't looked into it yet. js/net is unchanged on this branch, so it may come from the origin/main merge or be a flake.
Not run: just test interop --all, CI on this head, moq-c/moq-archive/moq-hls/moq-transcode tests, and the binding test suites (py, swift, kt, go, dart).
To resume
Run just check in the nix shell, read the test js failure, and fix it or confirm it also fails on main.
Run cargo test -p moq-c -p moq-archive -p moq-hls -p moq-transcode -p moq-ffi.
Run just test interop --all.
Push to quest/m1/compress/ietf-range-widen with an explicit HEAD:refs/heads/... refspec. Never rebase or force-push.
A relayed moq-transport datagram keeps its Object ID, so the start bound
compares against it rather than dropping the whole start group, and the
end bound applies too, as the model window did before.

Correct the public documentation for group-only ranges.
Cursor::deliver no longer clips frames, but this documentation still promises that a range can start or end inside a group. The datagram documentation at Line 6142-6143 also says ranges match Object IDs, although admission now uses the group sequence and timestamp. Update both descriptions so callers do not expect frame filtering from subscription ranges.

The lite publisher now cuts datagrams against both frame bounds itself, by the Object ID a relayed moq-transport datagram keeps (frame 0 otherwise), which the model's frame window used to do; the IETF publisher already did.group::Consumer::with_range; moq-archive resumes recording from the group start and skips the frames it already stored (it already did the skip).MoqAnchor::Absolute(moq-ffi) andmoq_anchor(moq-c) dropframe; the py, swift, kt, go, and dart wrappers and the generated Dart bindings follow.js/netalready carried group ranges only, so it needs no change.Frame StartMUST be 0 unless the subscriber already holds every frame below it, from this publisher or another; the Positions section says a subscription starts at a group's first frame, and a publisher's protocol-violation rule now names only the checkableFrame Endrule. Lite-07 changelog bullet. No encoding change.subscribe-ranges/bounded-tail.mddeleted: a request no longer ends mid-group, so its copy cannot be cut short.Test
a_start_group_arrives_wholeruns every pair of lite-07, moq-transport-17, 18 and 22 hops through a relay, compressed and plain, with the group starting before or after the subscription (the joining FETCH/fill path), and checks group 5 arrives whole from frame 0.frame_bounds_cut_datagrams_by_object_idcovers the lite publisher's datagram cut at both bounds, public and relayed. Tests for application frame ranges are deleted with the feature, as ishead_fetch.rs, whose peer subscribing mid-group is no longer expressible. The moq-c, moq-archive, and moq-transcode tests that drove a handler with a publicwith_frame_startlose that case: a partial FETCH now reaches a handler only from a peer or a hole fill.just check(lint, drafts, JS, and every Rust test including moq-c, moq-archive, moq-hls, moq-transcode, and moq-ffi),just test interop --all, andquest check --base origin/mainpass on the merged head.Re-merged main through 4ccf05aac6 after the queue dropped this PR on a conflict (

Re-merged main through f206893047: the quest link keeps this PR's narrowed owner note and main's removal of the finished QPACK quest, and main's newrange_anchors.rstest (moq-dev/moq#6519) now anchors on a group sequence (Anchor::Absolute(0)). Re-merged main through 3d2530d74e: the group-onlyset_boundsbecomes main'swith_start/with_end/with_spanbuilders over a group sequence, the resume reader'sraise_start_to/start_at/end_atbecome main'sset_range, and the IETF resume-stitch tests main rewrote stay deleted. moq-archive's two past-end EOF checks, which had passed a frame start past a complete group's end, are restored in the new shape: fetch the whole group (evicted, or after the reader finished) and read it withwith_range(len + 1..), which must end cleanly.just check(every selected module, 8838 Rust tests),just test interop --all(172), andquest checkpass on the first merge;cargo nextest run -p moq-netand clippy pass after the second. The queue dropped
bf6ebe31c5on a conflict with moq-dev/moq#6171, whosetrack::Fillreplacedgroup::Request. Re-merged main through 74b9ff5e63. #6171 asked each fill from the frame its reader's range started at, and split a run of misses at every range starting mid-group (Window::frames,Window::partial_starts); with whole-group ranges a reader's fill always starts at frame 0, so those and the reader window inmiss::Askingare deleted, along with #6171's three tests of mid-group reader starts (an_earlier_reader_widens_a_queued_fill_to_its_head,a_fill_starts_at_its_own_ranges_frame,an_adjacent_range_starting_mid_group_heads_its_own_fill). Afetch_groupwith a crate-privateframe_startstill asks a fill from that frame, and fills still widen to the earliest frame joined. moq-transcode's mid-group fetch test stays deleted, and the finishedsubscribe-ranges/dynamic.mdquest takes main's deletion.just check(every selected module, 8896 Rust tests),just test interop --all(172), and the moq-archive past-end checks pass on the merged head, which Codex reviewed with no major issues. A last merge brought moq-dev/moq#6529 and fixed CodeRabbit's staleAbsolute(group, frame)in the subscribe-ranges quest; the Rust tests (8906), Python, andquest checkpass after it.Public API and wire impact
