test(interop): fail a misapplied pre-skip; clip Opus pre-skip in moqsrc - #6490
test/interop/tone.py --phase requires the sample decoded at timestamp t to carry phase 2πft (every publisher's tone starts at timestamp zero), within one sample. A decoder that keeps or drops the wrong number of priming samples now fails, the way a channel swap or a gap already does. Opus's 312-sample pre-skip, kept or trimmed twice, lands a 440 Hz tone 318 us off; clean decodes measure 0 to 3 us.
interop.sh passes --phase for every Opus rendition except the browser publisher (its capture clock is not tied to its WAV's phase; measured offsets were arbitrary) and the native-JS subscribers (they hand WebCodecs raw Opus without the OpusHead, as the player does, so the pre-skip is left for the player's own trim, and libav stamps milliseconds).
The AAC rendition main added is not phase-checked yet. With --phase it fails every subscriber at -880us: ffmpeg's fragmented output gives the AAC track an edit list with media_time 1024 at tfdt 0, and the fMP4 importer ignores edit lists, so the tone plays 1024 priming samples late (21.3 ms, which is -880 us modulo the 440 Hz period). The fix belongs in the fMP4 importer, which is quest/m1/fmp4-edit-lists.md. That quest has an open decision (drop priming frames, or handle negative offsets; Apple's 2112-sample priming is not frame-aligned), interacts with the Opus convention (its elst equals the pre-skip), and changes what consumers see, so it gets its own PR. This PR moves that quest from m2 to m1, corrects its claim that ffmpeg avoids elst, and says how to turn the AAC phase check on.
moqsink now converts Opus timestamps the other way, as Codex flagged. opusenc stamps packets the same way moqsrc now does (0, 13.5, 33.5 ms at 20 ms frames, 0, 0, 0, 1.0, 3.5 ms at 2.5 ms, with clipping meta on the packets the pre-skip covers). moqsink used to publish those stamps as they were next to an OpusHead with a 312-sample pre-skip, so its packets overlapped and the audio played 6.5 ms early, and a moqsrc ! moqsink hop shifted it twice. It now publishes each packet the pre-skip, less its own clipping, later. A packet clipped whole at PTS 0 has lost its real position to saturation, so it is placed after the whole-clipped packets before it, the way a stream that starts at zero has them. opusenc_packets_land_back_to_back_on_hang_timeline runs a real opusenc at 20 ms and 2.5 ms frames and requires back-to-back timestamps from zero.
The check caught the GStreamer subscriber, as the quest predicted: opusdec trims only what a buffer's GstAudioClippingMeta asks for, never the OpusHead's pre-skip, and moqsrc attached none. Every GStreamer cell decoded 312 priming samples and ran 6.5 ms late (+318us at 440 Hz, -440us at 660 Hz). moqsrc now spreads the OpusHead's pre-skip over the packets it spans (three of them at 2.5 ms frames) as clipping meta, and stamps each Opus packet where its first kept sample plays, matching moq-audio's and @moq/watch's timeline. opusdec resyncs to every input pts (GstAudioDecoder tolerance 0), so the clip alone would have left a 6.5 ms gap after the first buffer.
Negative controls: tone.test.py decodes with the pre-skip kept and trimmed twice and requires both to fail, and a kept pre-skip to still pass without --phase. The pre-fix full matrix was the end-to-end one: only the GStreamer cells failed the new check.

Public API and wire impact
moq_mux::codec::opus::packet_samples becomes pub (was pub(crate)); moqsrc is its consumer. Additive.
moq-gst depends on gstreamer-audio 0.25 for AudioClippingMeta.
moqsrc behavior: Opus buffers carry clipping meta for the pre-skip and a PTS earlier by the pre-skip (less what each clips), so decoded audio lines up with video instead of trailing it by 6.5 ms, and the 312 priming samples are no longer played.
moqsink behavior: Opus frames publish the pre-skip (less each buffer's GstAudioClippingMeta start) later than their GStreamer PTS, so opusenc output no longer overlaps or plays 6.5 ms early. A clip past the pre-skip (a seek, an edit) lands the packet earlier by the excess, so its kept samples still play at its PTS. A buffer whose clipping meta is not in samples, or whose shift would reach before zero, is a stream error like any untimestampable buffer.
Wire: no format change. draft-lcurley-moq-hang now states the Opus timestamp convention tone.py --phase assumes and moq-audio, @moq/watch, and moqsrc follow: a frame timestamp counts the samples the OpusHead pre-skip trims, so the first kept sample plays at the first decoded frame's timestamp.
Decisions
Expose packet_samples from moq-mux, or keep it private and give moq-gst its own TOC parse?
✅ Expose it: one parser, and moq-gst already depends on moq-mux for the OpusHead.
Keep it private and parse the TOC again in moq-gst.
Hold the native-JS subscribers to the phase check?
✅ Leave them out: making the test client trim the pre-skip itself would cover only the Rust publisher (the ms stamps rule out 2.5 ms frames) and would test test code, since the player's trim lives in @moq/watch. Cover the player's trim with a follow-up quest instead.
Have the native-JS test client trim the pre-skip and join the check.
Checks
Merged main (moqsrc's per-rendition Pump became the per-instance Reader in moq-dev/moq#6394); each Reader starts a new stream on its pad, so it carries its own PreSkip, as each Pump did.
just check after the merge: js, rs, quest, and drill pass. check flake fails locally building the github-runner image (unshare: write failed /proc/self/uid_map: Operation not permitted, a sandbox limit of this host, not this change); CI runs it.
just rs test -p moq-gst after the merge: 211 passed, including opus_pre_skip_is_clipped_across_packets.
Before the merge: python3 test/interop/tone.test.py 12 passed; just test interop --all (pre-fix, with --phase replayed over the kept decodes) failed only the GStreamer cells; just test interop --publishers rust, python,go,cpp --subscribers rust, gst,c,python (post-fix) all passed.
just test interop --publishers rust, python --subscribers gst, rust after the merge: all pass, with --phase on every audio cell.
After merging main at 4ccf05a (the AAC rendition) and adding the moqsink fix: just check passes js, drafts, rs, quest, and drill (check flake hits the same unshare sandbox limit). cargo test -p moq-gst: 212 passed. just test interop --all: 172 passed, 0 failed. After re-merging main at 8579e9c: cargo test -p moq-gst and quest check pass again.
Follow-ups
The GStreamer publisher (moqsink behind opusenc) is not in the matrix, so only the unit test above checks its Opus timestamps follow the pre-skip convention.
Proposed quest (for /quest-plan), [M] Interop checks the player's pre-skip trim. Goal: the browser interop subscriber holds each tone's phase to the player's playhead timestamps, as tone.py --phase does for native subscribers, so a @moq/watch that keeps, drops, or double-trims the Opus pre-skip fails its cell; the browser publisher stays out (its capture clock is not tied to its WAV).
… pre-skip in moqsrc
tone.py --phase requires the sample decoded at timestamp t to carry phase 2πft,
so a decoder that keeps or drops the wrong number of priming samples fails. It
runs for every pair but the browser publisher and the native-JS subscriber.
It caught moqsrc: opusdec trims pre-skip only from GstAudioClippingMeta, which
moqsrc never attached, so GStreamer played 312 priming samples and its audio
ran 6.5 ms late. moqsrc now clips the OpusHead's pre-skip across the packets it
spans and stamps each packet where its first kept sample plays.

Interop tone check catches a misapplied pre-skip
test(interop): fail a misapplied pre-skip; clip Opus pre-skip in moqsrc
Oct 23, 2026
Outcome: the quest's work is done; the PR stays a draft for the two decisions in the description (exposing moq_mux::codec::opus::packet_samples, and leaving the native-JS subscribers out of the phase check), both already implemented as recommended.
The new tone.py --phase check failed exactly the GStreamer cells before the moqsrc fix (+317 to +321 us at 440 Hz, a kept 312-sample pre-skip) and nothing else it covers; after the fix those cells measure -1 to +3 us like every other subscriber. check flake could not run on this host (user-namespace sandbox limit), so CI is the first full run of it.
GStreamer now applies Opus pre-skip clipping and timestamp adjustments on source and sink paths. The interop tone checker adds optional timestamp-based phase validation, and the interop script enables it for selected Opus combinations. Tests cover clipping, timestamp correction, and phase offsets. Documentation and quest plans describe the timing rules, interop coverage, and fMP4 edit-list handling.

Merging. The maintainer settled both decisions recorded in the description (expose packet_samples from moq-mux; native-JS subscribers stay out of the phase check). CI is green, the current head has a non-Grok review, and quest check passes against main.
Merging main left phase_checked called only from run_cell, which
harness_spawn invokes indirectly, so shellcheck flagged it as unused.

The merge group failed shellcheck (SC2329 on phase_checked in test/interop/interop.sh once combined with main); main was merged and the function marked as reached through run_cell (623de58).
CodeRabbit's doc finding fixed in 5201a4a: doc/bin/gstreamer.md now says moqsrc clips the Opus pre-skip with GstAudioClippingMeta and stamps each Opus packet where its first kept sample plays. Doc-only since the last review (Codex thumbs-up, CodeRabbit).
Decisions stand as in the description: packet_samples exposed from moq-mux; native-JS subscribers stay out of the phase check, with the player's pre-skip trim proposed as a follow-up quest.

Since tone.py --phase now assumes it, please state the Opus timestamp convention in drafts/draft-lcurley-moq-hang.md in this PR: a packet's frame timestamp is where its decode starts, before the pre-skip is trimmed. Then run just drafts check.
Done in 5b78faa: the Audio section of drafts/draft-lcurley-moq-hang.md now says an Opus frame timestamp counts the samples the OpusHead pre-skip trims, so a consumer presents each decoded sample the pre-skip earlier than its frame timestamp places it, and the first kept sample plays at the first decoded frame's timestamp. That is what moq-audio's encoder (no folded delay for Opus), @moq/watch's terminal trim, and now moqsrc already do; a changelog bullet is under moq-hang-04. just drafts check passes.
Also merged main (clean) and qualified the gstreamer.md Opus PTS sentence for packets clipped whole. just check: js, rs, drafts, quest, drill pass; check flake fails locally only on the sandboxed runner image build (unshare uid_map), which CI runs.
Merged main (clean). The quest file on main is unchanged in substance, and no replan touches it.
The hang draft now states the Opus timestamp convention tone.py --phase relies on (frame timestamps count the pre-skip), with a moq-hang-04 changelog bullet; just drafts check passes.
CodeRabbit's gstreamer.md finding fixed: the Opus PTS sentence now covers only packets that keep samples.
Decisions stand as in the description: packet_samples exposed from moq-mux; native-JS subscribers stay out of the phase check.

opusenc and moqsrc stamp an Opus packet where its first kept sample plays
and clip the pre-skip with GstAudioClippingMeta, while a hang timestamp
counts the pre-skip. moqsink published the GStreamer stamp, so packets
overlapped by the pre-skip and a moqsrc to moqsink hop shifted twice.
The AAC rendition's tone is 1024 priming samples late because the fMP4
importer ignores the edit list ffmpeg writes; that is
quest/m1/fmp4-edit-lists.md, so --phase checks Opus until it lands.

GstAudioClippingMeta can clip more than the OpusHead pre-skip (a seek or
an edit). Hang has no way to drop those samples, so land the packet
earlier and let its kept samples play at its PTS, instead of failing the
pad. Only a shift before zero is refused.
