Problem

TS import flushes video at each PES boundary. A picture split across PES loses bytes, and several pictures in one PES inherit one PTS. Damage also needs to discard the unconfirmed tail while preserving AUs already admitted by codec boundaries.

Approach

  • Keep a private AVC/HEVC assembler per PID. The PES owning an AU's required three-byte start-code prefix supplies its PTS once, including prefixes split across PES. EOF and PMT retirement drain the same assembler; loss, seek, and discontinuity discard its unconfirmed tail.
  • Derive missing PTS only from an explicit anchor and a declared proportional POC clock. AVC requires the TS timing descriptor's fixed-rate/temporal-POC flags plus fixed-rate SPS VUI; HEVC requires proportional-POC VUI. Missing timing ends the import outside recoverable Damaged handling.
  • Use maintained h264-reader for AVC syntax and existing scuffle-h265 SPS/VUI parsing with a private HEVC first-independent-slice prefix reader. Commit parameter sets per admitted AU and roll back only the damaged AU, retaining a following buffered recovery keyframe.
  • Charge buffered bytes through PES-to-AU ownership transfer. Incremental start-code search and compaction of spent PES stamps keep tiny-fragment scanning linear and metadata independent of the number of PES fragments.
  • Extend the independent T-STD model with anchored POC presentation timing and HRD picture-timing DPB output delay for missing DTS. Generated AVC/HEVC controls include B pictures and preserve each ES byte's original arrival position; missing timing still refuses.

Impact

  • No public API signatures, C ABI, catalog fields, or wire formats change. TS emits one frame per AU with its source presentation time; unsupported missing timing now fails loudly instead of repeating a timestamp.
  • Breaking (behavior): several AUs in one PES need anchored POC plus declared proportional timing. AVC's TS timing descriptor needs both fixed_frame_rate_flag and temporal_poc_flag, alongside fixed-rate SPS VUI; HEVC needs VUI's vui_poc_proportional_to_timing_flag. Each field of field-coded video is its own AU, so a field pair in one PES needs that clock too. To migrate, configure the encoder/muxer to declare that clock, or supply each AU's PTS in its own PES. Packet loss discards the unconfirmed AU tail; codec-proven completed AUs remain published. Call finish() to drain a clean tail. The CLI documentation says the same.
  • Raw elementary-stream, RTSP, and FFI timestamp modes keep their current contract. TS export's existing decode-time normalization is unchanged; the separate decode-order quest remains independent.
  • The immediate consumer is ts::Import, used by CLI/SRT gateway import. A new private parser dependency uses the already locked stable h264-reader 0.9.0.

Validation

  • Reproduced split-AU byte loss, repeated PTS, damaged-tail rollback consuming the buffered recovery keyframe, and truncated-prefix EOF classification before their fixes.
  • Final affected CI against checked integration checkpoint eb0f08bec2: 3,712 dependency-closure tests, 518 capture tests, and 226 playback tests pass. Rust lint, WASM, io_uring compilation, and global checks pass.
  • Full just ci reached the host's runner-image restriction: systemd-repart cannot write /proc/self/uid_map. Its preceding JS/Rust lint, quest, and drill phases passed; unaffected remaining phases and JS tests were run separately.
  • Real AVC/HEVC B-picture fixtures repartition identical bytes into one AU/PES, combined AUs/PES, and split prefixes/bodies, comparing bytes, PTS, and keyframes through import/export/reimport. Existing independent-PID and loss controls retain their assertions with explicit codec boundaries.
  • Full T-STD controls and just test ts --fragment-pes pass on the final source: FFmpeg decode, T-STD, continuity, duration, PMT and all 804 PCR samples within 500 ns.
  • just test interop --all passes eight wire tests and all 164 media, authorization, and tail controls (172 checks) on production checkpoint 5d8dc9d19 (Rust, Python, Go, C++, browser, native Node/Bun, C and GStreamer). The final delta adds a valid-AVC missing-descriptor refusal assertion, explicit timing-signal migration docs, and quest completion; production source is unchanged.

The new Criterion benchmark sweeps AU size and PES payload independently. Current end-to-end import costs on this shared Linux host:

AU size 64-byte PES payload 1,024-byte PES payload 65,000-byte PES payload
4 KiB 103 µs 92 µs 90 µs
64 KiB 336 µs 142 µs 127 µs
1 MiB 4.80 ms 1.07 ms 0.87 ms

Run nix develop --command cargo bench --locked -p moq-mux --bench ts_video -- --noplot. It uses real encoder SPS/PPS/IDR syntax and runs with the other Criterion targets nightly.

Alternatives

Flushing per PES cannot preserve either AU bytes or timestamp ownership. SPS frame rate alone does not authorize multiplying numeric POC distance by a tick, so inference requires explicit proportional signaling. The public elementary splitters retain their caller-supplied timestamp role.

Review round (2026-10-24)

  • Merged main, including moq-dev/moq#6543: a finished TS video stream drains its clean tail, then replaces its splitter and assembler outright, releasing the parameter caches that loss and seek resets keep.
  • A prefix whose NAL header had not arrived yet was folded into the spent spans, so the PES owning the next AU's prefix lost its PTS. The assembler now waits for the header. Reproduced by running every prefix cut behind a buffered AU.
  • AVC types 14-18 and HEVC 41-44/48-55 now open the next AU, matching the independent model's AU_OPENERS.
  • Field-coded video keeps the refusal the plan settled: each field is its own AU, so a field pair in one PES needs the declared clock. MIGRATE.md says so.
  • After the merge: moq-mux's 1,687 tests, just test ts --fragment-pes, just test ts-tstd, clippy and quest check --base origin/main pass. just check passes its JS, Rust, quest and drill phases; its flake phase hits this host's systemd-repart uid_map restriction. just test interop --all was not rerun, since the round only touches TS import's private assembler.

Merge round (2026-10-24)

  • Merged main, including moq-dev/moq#6371 (shared MPTS parser), moq-dev/moq#6453 (decode order) and moq-dev/moq#6610. import.rs merged cleanly: the per-PID assembler sits under the shared parser's per-program dispatch unchanged.
  • Per moq-dev/moq#6610, migration notes are written at the breaking cut, so the MIGRATE.md entry moved into Impact above and the title gained !.
  • The quest README's H.264/H.265 row is now landed, since decode order also landed; the deleted decode-order quest stays deleted.
  • After the merge: moq-mux's 1,741 tests, clippy with -D warnings, the ts_video and ts_programs benches in test mode, and quest check --base origin/main pass. just check stops at this host's systemd-repart uid_map restriction in its flake phase.

Follow-ups

No open API or wire decision. Decode-order remains independent. Publishing a complementary field pair as one frame, so field pairs in one PES import without the timing descriptor, would be a separate quest if wanted.

Walkthrough

The TS importer now assembles AVC and HEVC access units across PES boundaries and supports multiple access units in one PES. It uses an access unit’s PES PTS when available and derives later timestamps from POC only when the required proportional timing is signalled. The importer updates video damage, finish, seek, and buffering behavior. New compliance controls and fixtures cover supported timing cases and missing timing signals.

Priority: Normal

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 8af04

TS inputs where a start-code prefix is split across PES packets can lose the access unit's timestamp, and the import can end when no proportional timing is signalled. Field-coded H.264 without the AVC timing descriptor will also now be refused. Fix the boundary handling and document or test the field-coded behavior before merging.

Merge summary:

  • Merged main into the branch (no rebase). The only conflicts were docs: the quest README and rs/moq-mux/MIGRATE.md. import.rs merged cleanly with the shared MPTS parser from moq-dev/moq#6371: new streams still get a fresh assembler, and retirement still drains it.
  • The quest README's H.264/H.265 row is now landed, and Access units is gone from Required. The decode-order quest, which main deleted in moq-dev/moq#6453, stays deleted.
  • moq-dev/moq#6610 moves migration notes to the breaking cut. The MIGRATE.md entry is now an Impact bullet, and the title is marked !.
  • Passing locally: moq-mux's 1,741 tests, clippy with -D warnings, ts_video and ts_programs in test mode, and quest check. CI's required checks pass, and Codex gave the new head a thumbs-up.
  • Unrelated: on main, the catalog bench's catalog_write_order/256 case panics with TooManyRenditions { count: 65, max: 64 }. It is out of scope here and offered as a follow-up.

The merge queue dropped this PR in run 40163528981. The cause was in this PR, not a flake: sh/gh/nightly.test.py (test_every_cargo_bench_target_runs_nightly) failed with ('moq-mux', 'ts_video') : Cargo bench targets missing from Nightly. The new ts_video bench was never added to a Nightly Criterion group.

Fix in 1e5a2ec: merged origin/main and added --bench ts_video to the rust-extra group in sh/gh/nightly.sh. That group is where nightly.sh says new coverage goes, beside the other moq-mux additions (ts_programs, decode_clock). The test fails locally without the change and passes with it. just gh test, the shell lint, and Rust lint/test for the changed crates all pass, as does quest check.

Reviewed commit: 1e5a2ec

No new actionable bugs found in the update: sh/gh/nightly.sh:123 adds the existing ts_video Criterion benchmark to rust-extra, with its registered harness=false target and comparison-base absence handling. Prior implementation files are unchanged.

Still open from earlier static inspection, not introduced by this update: P3 at rs/moq-mux/src/container/ts/import.rs:3114–3117 and 3125–3128. stream.finish() replaces the assembler before finish_stream collects accumulated damage at 1677, losing final-AU damage reporting. Collect or preserve damage before replacement.

Direction: adding nightly coverage is appropriate. Verification: static inspection only; tests and benchmarks were not run.

Stream::finish replaced the assembler after the EOF drain, discarding
damage that drain recorded before finish_stream collected it.

Agreed with the P3 in this review and fixed it in 8585faa. Stream::finish swapped in a fresh Assembly after the EOF drain, so a final AU refused inside the per-AU closure (one that assembles but then fails to parse, such as a truncated SPS) had its damage dropped before finish_stream called video_damage. Assembly::finish now releases the buffers but keeps pending damage.

Reproduced first: video_damage_in_the_final_access_unit_is_counted reported damaged = 0 before the fix and reports 1 after it. A forbidden-bit final AU never hit this path because assembly.next refuses it as an Err, which is counted. Rust lint and the tests for the changed crates pass.

Reviewed commit: 8585faa

Fixed: the P3 final-AU damage-reporting issue from #6534 (review) . rs/moq-mux/src/container/ts/video.rs:310–315 preserves pending damage while releasing assembler state; both AVC/HEVC finish paths call it before finish_stream collects damage. The regression at import.rs:8736–8746 covers a malformed final AVC AU while retaining the preceding valid frame.

No new actionable bugs found. A shared cleanup method fixes both codec paths without retaining buffers or parameter caches.

Verification: static inspection only; tests were not run.

Landing again at 8585faa. Changes since the queue drop:

  • 1e5a2ec75f merges origin/main and adds the new ts_video bench to Nightly's rust-extra group. That fixes the queue failure in run 40163528981.
  • 8585faa094 keeps TS video damage that the end-of-input drain refuses, with a regression test, per this review.

Both commits are reviewed: an OpenAI review (5641730709) and a Codex 👍 on the head. quest check passes against current main. No decisions are pending.
