fix(net): keep a listing's finishes through its broadcast's clean end - #6577
When a broadcast ends right after a track finishes, by close() or a clean finish(), the paused SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS PUBLISH for that track ended with INTERNAL_ERROR instead of TRACK_ENDED, in Rust and JS (Codex finding r4357921727 on moq-dev/moq#6399). The finish was lost at four points:
A listing reported its clean end ahead of the removals still queued.
A finished track still held at close (by its producer or a Finish) was never unlisted as finished.
The Rust origin forwarder handled a source's close before reading its listing, so the front ended without the source's last finishes. The JS front's conclusion dropped them the same way.
The IETF publisher ended every PUBLISH as soon as the broadcast's announcement went, before the listing could say which tracks finished.
Changes
Listing (Rust + JS): a clean end now comes after each removal queued before it, finished or not; an add never read is dropped, and an error still ends at once. A broadcast's close first unlists each of its producer's finished tracks as finished. A JS reader that closes itself still ends at once.
Origin forwarder (Rust): reads the serving source's listing before its close, so the front forwards the last finishes before it detaches the source. A closed source's listing is finite, so this cannot starve the close.
Front (JS):resume.Front drains a closed source's listing before ending its own on conclusion.
IETF publisher (Rust): a route now says why it closed. On a withdrawal (announce End), nothing more is listed, the tracks not yet PUBLISHed or skipped are dropped, and the listing is read to its end, which the front reaches promptly since nothing serves the path. On an instance replacement (announce Restart), the PUBLISHes end at once as before. Authorization loss and request or session cancellation are unchanged.
IETF publisher (JS): sources here are the local broadcast or a session's, never a front, and a closed JS broadcast's listing has already ended. So whatever withdraws a listed broadcast, a closed source's listing is read to that end; a live one still ends at once.
No signature changes. Behavior: a Tracks listing's clean end follows the removals queued before it (Rust and JS), and a broadcast's close reports its finished tracks as finished. Readers that match every event need no change, so there is no MIGRATE entry.
Wire: no message changes. IETF SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS now sends PUBLISH_DONE TRACK_ENDED for a finished track whose broadcast ends right after. moq-lite sends TRACKS_FINISH before the Tracks Stream's FIN in the same case, as its draft already allows.
Decisions
These were open in the draft. Each was settled as recommended unless noted, and recorded here as the paper trail.
Where the clean-end drain lives:
Crate-internal readers only, public Tracks order unchanged (the draft's recommendation).
✅ Every reader, public Tracks included. Decided 2026-10-24 (maintainer): every reader, public Tracks included. Picked instead of the draft's recommendation: the public contract already promises "each change as it happens, until the broadcast ends", the lite publisher (a crate reader that faces the wire) needs it too, and one ordering is less code than a reader flag. moq-dev/moq#6399 only split this off; it did not rule out the public order.
IETF handoff on a withdrawn route:
✅ Read the listing to its end (Rust), relying on the front ending once nothing serves the path. A PUBLISH then lives as long as its instance is served, which matches the sticky-subscription rule in rs/moq-net/AGENTS.md.
An explicit drain acknowledgement from the forwarder to the publisher. Rejected as a second channel for what the listing's own end already says.
Instance replacement: ✅ ends the old instance's PUBLISHes at once, as before. Lingering them would hold draft-18's one claim per track and skip the new instance's track.
Tests
Rust a_clean_end_keeps_its_finishes: drafts 18-22 × finished producer held or dropped. Finished video gets TRACK_ENDED, unfinished audio gets INTERNAL_ERROR. Fails on the base, and again with either the forwarder reorder or the withdrawal handling reverted.
Rust a_front_forwards_the_finishes_before_its_source_closed, plus listing unit tests for the drain, the held-finish close, and a handler's end vs abort.
JS a clean end keeps its finishes: drafts 18-22 × removed or not × PUBLISH answered or not (all failing on the base). An unanswered unfinished track is still reset, as in Rust.
JS listing drain and resume.Front conclusion tests (the front test fails without its fix).
The JS test "a track finished as its PUBLISH goes out" now spies Writer.write before listing, asserts its hold engaged, and restores the spy at the test's end. The full js/net suite passed 24 of 24 runs at 12 in parallel, where 5 of 12 had failed before.
just check passes after merging main (8826 Rust tests, the JS suites, and the quest check).
just test interop --all: every cell passes except the cpp ones, whose client fails to build on main (moq.hpp calls an undeclared epoch_time_ms), unrelated to listings.
Iteration
Merged main after moq-dev/moq#6641 moved each listed broadcast's tracks into Entries (pending, staged, listed, skipped). A withdrawal now halts it: nothing pending or staged is PUBLISHed, its unsent skips go, and the PUBLISHes already sent stay listed until the listing ends.
The merge queue dropped the head (run 40138974571): the new JS clean-end test sometimes timed out waiting for the audio PUBLISH. The test before it, from moq-dev/moq#6399, spied Writer.write only after the listing's OK, when the PUBLISH could already be out. Its spy then never matched, never restored itself, and leaked. In the next test it restored itself mid-write, and since Message.write reads writer.write before awaiting its frame, a concurrent PUBLISH went to the stale spy and was dropped. Fixed in the test, so the publisher logic is unchanged. Merged main again.
The queue dropped the head for a conflict with main. Merged main again (no rebase):
moq-dev/moq#6660 removed broadcast.finish() in both languages, so the clean-end tests lose their finish() axis and close_listing's doc no longer names Finish. A finished track still held by its producer at close is still unlisted as finished.
moq-dev/moq#6663 rewrote the JS #listBroadcast loop around stream credit (pending, staged, opening). The withdrawal drain now lives at its single wait: once the route's hold aborts with a closed source, the pending and staged tracks are dropped and only the listing is read to its end, so nothing more is PUBLISHed while the sent ones still get their TRACK_ENDED.
just check passed every module (8874 Rust tests, test js), and the js/net listing, SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS, and resume suites pass.
just test interop --all passed in full (172) on the rerun; the first run failed only rust-swapped -> js on a browser tone check, the known tone grace flake on moq-lite, which this PR does not touch.
CodeRabbit found on the merged head that a closed broadcast skipped a finished track whose name a handler had also answered, so its PUBLISH ended in error. The producer's track is what served the name, so 73d3c225fc unlists it as finished in Rust and JS, with a case in each clean-end listing test (both failed before). just check passed every module again.
A broadcast ending right after a track finished ended that track's
SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS PUBLISH in error. A listing's clean end now follows the
removals queued before it, a close unlists held finished tracks as
finished, the origin forwarder reads a source's listing before its close,
a JS front drains a closed source before concluding, and the IETF
publisher reads a withdrawn broadcast's listing to its end.

Walkthrough
JS and Rust listings now report pending finished and removed track events before clean termination. Broadcast closure identifies finished tracks. Listing consumers forward final events before ending. Rust publisher routes distinguish withdrawal from replacement. Tests cover clean and error endings, track completion status, and PUBLISH outcomes. The protocol documentation now describes the TRACK_ENDED rule for finished tracks.

Closing a Tracks reader cleared its queue only while still attached, so
one closed after its broadcast ended still read the removals queued
before that end.

The spy that holds a PUBLISH mid-write was installed after the listing's
OK was read, by which time the publisher could already have written the
PUBLISH. It then never matched, never restored itself, and leaked into
the next test, where its self-restore fired while another PUBLISH write
was between looking up `writer.write` and calling it: that write hit the
dead mock and was dropped, so the clean-end test waited forever for it.
Spy before listing, hold only the first PUBLISH, assert the hold engaged,
and restore at the end of the test.

The new head 76ad26e fixes the merge-queue timeout in the JS clean-end test: the preceding Writer.write spy leaked into it (see Iteration in the description), and merges main.
Emit the producer finish when the broadcast closes.
When a handler has answered the same name, entry.answered remains true while the producer track is still owned. ListingState::close then skips that finished track, and BroadcastState::close_listing detaches the readers without queuing TracksEvent::Finished. The later handler removal cannot repair this because the closing state rejects Lister::finish, and dropping the lister removes the answer as unfinished.

Update ListingState::close to select every producer-owned track for which
finished returns true, regardless of entry.answered, so answered tracks also
emit their finish when the broadcast closes.

@coderabbitai Valid, fixed in 73d3c22 in both Rust and JS: a closed broadcast now unlists its producer's finished track as finished even when a handler also answered the name. Covered in each language's clean-end listing test.
Landing d25acdb through the merge queue: all 11 required checks pass, Codex reviewed this head with no findings, CodeRabbit's shared-name finding was fixed in 73d3c22 with no open threads, and quest check against current main passes. No changes in this pass.
