Problem

The compressed announce path quest asked that a lite-07 path resolved by base/keep compression never outgrow what a literal ANNOUNCE_START can carry, in Rust and @moq/net.

Approach

Retire the quest with quest rm, which also drops its entry from the cut-audit epic. moq-dev/moq#6927 finished it:

  • Path::MAX_BYTES / Path.MAX_BYTES is now 4096. Rust Live::resolve_path refuses an over-long resolved suffix with PROTOCOL_VIOLATION, and the prefix join and create_withheld cannot hold a longer Path. JS AnnounceHistory.start and the subscriber's joined-path check throw ProtocolViolation.
  • The lite-07 draft already carries the receiver rule at 4096 bytes.
  • A 4096-byte path plus at most 32 hops always fits a literal ANNOUNCE_START far below the 64 KiB message cap. That makes this branch's earlier fuzz assertion redundant, so it is dropped (decision from the maintainer's "/quest-iterate trim").

The branch merges origin/main and takes main's side of every conflict, so the diff is now only the quest removal.

Impact

  • Quest files only: quest/m1/cut-audit/announce-path-bytes.md deleted, one entry removed from quest/m1/cut-audit/README.md.
  • Public API: none. Wire: none.

Validation

  • quest check --base origin/main: 606 documents ok.
  • just check: passed (no Rust selected).

No actionable bugs found. The new fuzz invariant uses the real lite-07 literal START encoder, including its message-size check, rather than duplicating a size formula. Reusing the buffer and adding the UTF-8 boundary/compressed-join seed with a full hop list is a focused extension of the existing round-trip harness; retaining the already-landed Path bound avoids redundant production policy.

Verification: static inspection of the changed tests/docs and surrounding decoder, compression, and encoding paths only. I did not run tests or fuzzing; the reported native ASan/Send-proof blocker remains outside this change.

The audit README no longer lists the announce-path compression finding as required. The audit note describing a proposed literal message-size bound and related changes was deleted. These documentation changes do not establish whether the proposed changes were implemented.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title states that the announce-path-bytes quest is retired and that PR #6927 finished it. This matches the changeset, which deletes the quest file and removes its README entry. The title is specific, short, and states the main change. It uses the conventional commit prefix and is 59 characters long.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description explains the problem (the compressed announce path quest), the approach (retiring the quest with quest rm and noting #6927 finished it), the impact (quest files only, deleted announce-path-bytes.md and one README entry removed), and validation steps. This matches the changeset, which deletes the quest file and removes one README line.

Explanation

No eligible functions found in the changed files. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 0 functions across 0 files.

Reviewed commit: 9b7d2d6

No actionable bugs found in the update. Compared with my previous review, the literal-encoding fuzz assertion and boundary seed have been deliberately removed, not retained. The current base already enforces the tighter 4096-byte Path limit, keeps compressed-join overflow regression coverage, and checks resolved paths in the announce fuzz target. Those bounds leave ample room below the literal START message cap, so retiring the fulfilled quest without another production guard is a reasonable simplification. The remaining base-relative diff is documentation only.

Verification: static comparison and inspection of the current bounds, compression paths, and test coverage; no tests or fuzzing run.

Minor · Keep the announce-path Required entry until a literal-form fuzz assertion… · README.md:55-57

quest/m1/cut-audit/README.md:55-57
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Keep the announce-path Required entry until a literal-form fuzz assertion exists.

Removing this entry retires the gate before its proof exists. The deleted note required a fuzz assertion that encodes each resolved ANNOUNCE_START literally under MAX_MESSAGE_SIZE. At the reviewed head, the announce fuzz target and the golden test encode only compressed output (encode_announces(..., true)). The PR summary says it adds this literal check, but the merge-base-to-head diff changes only the audit README and deletes the note. The literal-form proof is missing. This is a missing proof, not a demonstrated failure of the production path bounds, which this comment does not claim.

Suggested fix

Restore the Required entry in quest/m1/cut-audit/README.md:

 ## Required

 - [Counted field-less `trun` entries](/quest/m1/cut-audit/fmp4-sample-resolver.md) - a moof of field-less runs cannot materialize millions of sample entries
+- [A compressed announce path never outgrows its literal form](/quest/m1/cut-audit/announce-path-bytes.md) - lite-07 announce compression cannot build multi-MiB paths
 - [A reserved group survives a route returning](/quest/m1/cut-audit/reserved-route-return.md) - a route flip A to B to A no longer panics a peeked reader

Restore the deleted note from the merge base:

git checkout e17e38d162f1dcd65dbd35c39cab7df0c06a08d5 -- quest/m1/cut-audit/announce-path-bytes.md

Remove the entry only after a fuzz or test assertion encodes each resolved START in literal form under MAX_MESSAGE_SIZE.

Declining the CodeRabbit finding to keep the announce-path entry in Required until a literal-form fuzz assertion exists (review).

The maintainer chose to drop that assertion and trim this PR once moq-dev/moq#6927 merged. That decision is in the PR body. The PR body also no longer claims to add the check, so the review is answering the old description.

The literal form now fits by construction. A resolved path is refused past Path::MAX_BYTES (4096), and a hop chain past MAX_HOPS (32 varints of up to 8 bytes each). A literal ANNOUNCE_START is therefore at most about 4.4 KiB, against the 64 KiB MAX_MESSAGE_SIZE. A fuzz assertion would only re-check that sum. The quest's receive-side bound is enforced in Rust and @moq/net and stated in the lite-07 draft, so nothing in the quest is still open.

Merging. Merged origin/main (0ce3807) into the branch without conflicts; the net diff is still only the announce-path-bytes quest removal and its cut-audit epic entry, and quest check passes (610 documents). Reviews on 9b7d2d6 were settled: Codex approved, and CodeRabbit's finding was declined in-thread; the maintainer chose to merge as is.
