fix(js): yield host tasks through the injected clock - #6988
Budget (MessageChannel) and nextTask (setTimeout(0)) in js/net yielded host tasks behind the clock's back, so Manual.advance could return, or move time forward, while a yielding loop was still mid-work. Forcing Budget.poll to always yield made 5 tests fail on main, plus one more found along the way.
Not all of these were clock races:
pooled probe readers share demand, a handle's announcements sync with the shared origin, a lite connection probes only while its estimate is observed: these ran on bun's jest.useFakeTimers() with hand-rolled drains (64 microtask turns, or one MessageChannel task), which can never see a yield.
a listing past the announces cap is reset: no timers at all. The listing queue coalesces, and the reset withdraws unread adds, so the test only passed if the consumer happened to read each add before the cap overflowed.
integration: ietf blind handle picks up a publisher that arrives late: after a REQUEST_ERROR, the ietf subscriber reset the SUBSCRIBE stream with its own Error. The mock transport hands that raw JS object to the peer, whose pending read wraps it as a malformed request and closes the session. On a real wire it would be an INTERNAL_ERROR reset.
a server refuses a client offering only IETF versions (extra): the refusal could land while the client's write yielded, before the test attached its handler.
Approach
@moq/clock gains yieldNow(): a host task scheduled through the installed backend (Backend.task). On the host it is a MessageChannel task. A Manual clock still uses a real host task, so queued I/O runs first, but counts it, and advance/fire/drive never move time or return while one is pending.
Budget yields through yieldNow(); nextTask is gone and its callers use yieldNow().
The cap test reads in step. The connect test handles the rejection before writing.
A refused ietf SUBSCRIBE or SUBSCRIBE_NAMESPACE now closes its request stream (FIN, plus STOP_SENDING CANCELLED) instead of resetting it, as SubscribeSetupState.rejected already said was intended.
lite draft-06: a newer update wins before a buffered group backlog drains pre-encodes its second update. Its premise is an update the transport already delivered whole. One MessageChannel task is shorter than bun's ≥1ms setTimeout(0), so an in-process sender whose writes yield no longer meets that premise.
Verified: with forced yields, the whole js/net suite passes except a flood of a peer's listing churn yields to the host's tasks, which only exceeds its 5s timeout at full-suite load. Forcing makes it take about 40k host tasks; a real Budget yields at most once per 4ms slice. With the Manual yield accounting disabled, the converted tests and the two new clock tests fail. just ci passes.
Impact
@moq/clock: new yieldNow(): Promise<void>. Manual.advance, fire, and drive now also wait for pending yieldNow() calls before moving time or settling. Not breaking.
Wire (moq-transport): a refused SUBSCRIBE or SUBSCRIBE_NAMESPACE now ends with FIN and STOP_SENDING(CANCELLED) instead of RESET_STREAM(INTERNAL_ERROR).
Choices made without asking
Named it yieldNow after Rust's moq_clock::sim::yield_now. The quest left the hook's shape open.
Host nextTask callers (auth_session decision point, lite publisher update boundary) now get a MessageChannel task instead of setTimeout(0): one hook, and no nested-timer clamp.
Fixed the ietf blind-handle flake at the subscriber's reset instead of making the mock faithful. Making the mock faithful breaks 9 tests that assert reset reasons that could never cross a real wire (see follow-ups).
Alternatives
Have Manual.advance drain extra host tasks: rejected in the quest (slow, and it can't tell when a yield chain has finished).
Treat a Manual yield as a zero-delay timer that fires synchronously outside advance: this loses the host-task boundary that auth_session and the lite publisher rely on.
Follow-ups
Mock transport forwards local reset/stop reasons as raw JS objects. Real WebTransport carries only a code (0 for a non-WebTransportError). A faithful mock (a transformer cancel hook works in bun and node, but makes abort() reject; a read-side wrapper would not) breaks 9 tests that assert leaked messages: 4 ietf publisher draft-22 tests expecting "unsubscribed" or "range update", which suggests those resets go out as INTERNAL_ERROR on a real wire and should probably be CANCELLED; 2 lite publisher tests; and 3 reload/connect setup tests.
Remaining jest.useFakeTimers() tests (forward, ietf/lite publisher and subscriber, integration, connect, hang consumer.startup) cannot see host-task yields. They pass under forced yields today, but moving them onto Manual would make them immune.
`@moq/clock` gains `yieldNow()`, a host-task yield routed through the
installed backend. A `Manual` clock counts pending yields and never
moves time or returns from `advance`/`fire` while one is in flight, so a
loop that yields mid-work no longer races the test driving it.
`Budget` and the old `nextTask` now yield through it. Tests that raced
host-task yields on jest fake timers move onto `Manual`, and tests that
raced yields without any clock read in step or watch rejections early.
A refused ietf SUBSCRIBE now closes its request stream instead of
resetting it as INTERNAL_ERROR.

No actionable bugs found in the changed areas. Centralizing host-task yields in the clock backend is a sound, small abstraction: Manual can account for yielding work without replacing the real task boundary or adding arbitrary drain counts. The refusal cleanup now uses the existing clean-close path rather than treating a valid rejection as a local failure; the test adjustments separate scheduling assumptions from behavior under test.
Verification limits: static review of the diff and surrounding clock, budget, request-stream, subscriber and publisher code. I did not run tests or independently verify the reported forced-yield/CI results.
The clock package adds yieldNow() and tracks pending host-task yields in Manual clocks. Network code and tests replace the prior nextTask helper with the clock API, and some tests use installed Manual clocks. Subscriber cleanup now closes request streams after REQUEST_ERROR, with regression tests for stream completion. Other network test updates change rejection handling, update encoding, and track-addition sequencing.

- Line 30: Replace the MessagePort-based ordering assumption in host.task with
direct synchronization between SubscriptionControls.#decode and the group-pop
operation so SUBSCRIBE_UPDATE is applied before hooks.tryRecvGroup uses its
bounds. Do not use another sleep or yield for ordering, and narrow Backend.task
and clock documentation to guarantee only that execution occurs in a later host
task.
Review comments at @js/net/src/ietf/subscriber.ts:
- Line 557: The namespace and subscribe paths can treat an invalid response as a
valid rejection. Decode the body with RequestError.decode() before closing the
request or setting state.rejected; only do either for a valid REQUEST_ERROR,
leaving state unset when decoding fails or framed.type differs so cleanup aborts
the stream.

A malformed or unexpected refusal now leaves the request for the reset. The
yield docs stop claiming a host task orders queued I/O.

Merged main after moq-dev/moq#7076 and moq-dev/moq#7173 landed, in 212396b. It had no conflicts and no leftover nextTask callers. The accepting.catch(() => {}) in connect.test.ts is kept.

⚠️Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Do not block timers on continuously rearmed yields.
If a loop calls yieldNow() until a sleep() completes, each yield queues the next before this check. The task count stays positive, so advance(), fire(), and drive() never fire the sleep. Even an unrelated settled drive() remains blocked. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
Redesign the yield accounting so ongoing work cannot prevent timers or settled work from progressing.

No new actionable bugs found in the substantive delta since 6727c7c, excluding merged main changes. The REQUEST_ERROR fix addresses the decoding concern in discussion_r4396375173: clean close is selected only after successful decoding; malformed or unexpected responses retain the reset path. Narrowing the yield contract to a later host task is appropriate, without adding synchronization machinery or claiming cross-source I/O ordering.
Verification limits: static GitHub review of the base-aware delta and surrounding response cleanup, request-stream decoding, and publisher control loop. No tests or forced-yield runs performed. The unchanged Manual accounting was not re-reviewed in this delta pass.
