Plans the follow-ups raised by the PRs merged and queued in the 2026-10-29 /quest-complete session, decided with the maintainer through /quest-plan.

New quests

Quest Size From
m0/backport-security-fixes: release refuses a conflicting SETUP Path and keeps persisted iroh keys private S #7206, #7213
m0/nightly/tokio-features: Incoming::refuse stops failing tokio-features --all XS #7069
m0/nightly/kio-e0433: moq-uring's tests build on macOS and Windows S #7030
m0/test-flakes-2/rtc-dtls: moq-rtc's session-end test survives load S #6987
m1/ietf-fill-end-cancel: Rust cancels an unclaimed fill head on SUBSCRIPTION_ENDED, as JS does S #7089
m1/ietf-dynamic-groups-resume: a resumed untimed copy keeps DYNAMIC_GROUPS XS #7085
m1/cut-audit/accept-budget: stream-accept loops yield on a per-poll budget S #7034
m1/opus-preskip: decoding from a track's first packet keeps its start S #7033
m1/c/consumer-cancel: every moq-c consumer cancels while pending S #7082

Edits

Decisions

  • Security backports: one m0 quest ✅ / two quests. This supersedes the 2026-10-27 "one PR per backport" for these two small fixes, which ship in one patch release.
  • WebTransport closed(): a requirement in native-web ✅ / standalone fix now. The adapter it would fix is being deleted.
  • Opus warmup: drop only pre-skip from a track's first packet ✅ / never drop warmup / configurable.
  • moq-c: keep the recorded plan (hand-written ships at the cut, generated after) and fix the cancel gap only ✅ / cancel plus producers / no follow-up / ship generated before the cut. The maintainer left this to the agent. The generated line waits on the rust2 UniFFI switch, which shouldn't block the cut.
  • Smoke trigger: fix the docs ✅ / add a PR trigger. Fixed inline here instead of planning an XS quest.
  • Not planned: archive attestation, the JS write-budget yield hook, the remaining CI/test/interop follow-ups, FFI demand cancel, the FFI snapshot budget knob, JS no-limit encoding and Dart nullable fields, OBS lower-rung headers, HLS returning renditions, catalog arrays/null, the FIPS Retry/reset/token keys, the mbx pin bump, gate refinements, the draft-22 interop flake, moq-go WebTransport draft 15, and resume-model gaps.

quest check passes (669 documents) and just check passes after merging origin/main 8d7a8e5.

Review

Codex (quest review), gpt-6.1-sol, medium effort, reviewed head 6619ea5 against origin/main 8d7a8e5: no findings. This head merges origin/main and hand-resolves test/smoke/AGENTS.md, keeping main's runner.py gating bullet beside this branch's smoke trigger wording.

Walkthrough

The changes add M0 and M1 quest entries and plans for release backports, build and test issues, cancellation, protocol behavior, media decoding, and stream acceptance. They also expand an end-to-end test description and update smoke workflow trigger documentation. No implementation changes are described.

Priority: Low

Merge Risk: Low · up to 6619e

This PR adds planning documents and updates smoke CI docs, and it changes no runtime behavior. Before merging, tighten the security backport plan so the follow-up does not miss the key-file hardening or the full SETUP Path refusal. Also clarify the ambiguous quest wording and the smoke trigger description.

Merging: plans 9 follow-up quests from the 2026-10-29 /quest-complete merges, plus edits to m1/quic-api/native-web.md, m1/unbounded-groups/README.md, and the smoke-test docs. The maintainer settled every decision listed in the body. The branch already contains main, quest check passes (678 documents) with the CLI built from main's flake pin, and the local Codex review of 2e56f0c found nothing.

Automated review by review (OpenAI)

Reviewed commit: 2e56f0c.

One P2 planning finding: quest/m0/nightly/tokio-features.md:10-14 schedules an already-landed fix. #7120 (f5f1cb1) already gates Incoming::refuse with #[cfg(any(test, feature = "quic"))]; it remains crate-private and the production QUIC drain path calls it at rs/moq-tokio/src/server.rs:737. Remove the completed quest and its Required entry, or identify a distinct current failing feature combination before prescribing changes to this method.

Direction: the remaining focused follow-ups are proportionate. Reusing cancellation patterns and fixing FIN behavior in the replacement adapter are simpler than parallel redesigns; the Smoke documentation now matches the workflow triggers. Preserve real event-loop yielding in the JS accept-flood proof.

Limits: static GitHub review of plans, relevant source and prior changes, with an independent check. No builds, quest checks, platform tests, smoke runs or release backports executed; reported test outcomes are not independently verified.

[P2] Remove the already-completed Incoming::refuse fix

#7120 (f5f1cb1) already added #[cfg(any(test, feature = "quic"))] to this crate-private method, and the production QUIC drain path calls it at rs/moq-tokio/src/server.rs:737. The test-only premise and proposed gating/public-surface work are stale at this head. Remove this completed quest and its Required entry, or identify a distinct currently failing feature combination so the follow-up does not redo the fix or remove a needed production method. This is source evidence, not a claim that the feature matrix passed.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Make the flood test prove the per-poll bound.

Sibling progress alone does not prove that the accept loop yielded within the budget. The loop could drain all 10,000 ready streams in one poll and yield afterward. Require a unique completion marker and an assertion that the flood takes multiple driver polls, following the stronger criteria used by #7034. (github.com)

Backport the full persisted-key hardening.

The referenced #7213 fix does more than set private permissions. It creates new files exclusively, rejects symlinks and non-regular files, and refuses existing files readable by group or others. A plan that only ports “private permissions” can leave the dangling-symlink and unsafe-existing-file cases open. Expand this bullet and its test scope to cover all of those cases. (github.com)

Describe the complete SETUP Path contract.

The upstream fix rejects any SETUP Path on URI bindings, including empty and request-URI-matching values. This line says only “a conflicting SETUP Path is refused”. That wording can produce an incomplete backport that still accepts the empty or matching cases. State that every present SETUP Path is refused, and keep those boundary cases in the test. Name the timeout as an ICE timeout, not a DTLS handshake timeout.

The test asserts Error::IceTimeout. session.rs maps any moq_ice::Error::Timeout to that error. Nothing in the inspected code ties this timeout to a DTLS handshake. Until the source is confirmed, the quest should use the error name the test asserts.

Today accept loops are bounded only by MAX_STREAMS credit, so one poll can
accept up to the 10,000-stream default. Charge the same `kio::coop::Budget`

State whether pre-SETUP streams consume the accept budget.

The plan says every peer-driven accept loop yields after a fixed per-poll budget. Two pre-SETUP paths can accept or spawn many streams in one call. The plan does not say whether they are covered. Either charge them to the budget or document the bound that keeps them safe, and add a pre-SETUP case to the flood test.

  • Lite (Rust): SetupAccept::poll loops on session.poll_accept_uni until it returns Pending or an error, and pushes each stream into pending. It then classifies every pending stream and moves each non-SETUP stream into early without yielding.
  • IETF (JavaScript): #runUnis spawns every stream in early in one synchronous for loop before it creates Readers or awaits readers.next().

Separate the Rust and JavaScript budget contracts.

kio::coop::Budget is a Rust API. JavaScript uses its own Budget.poll() helper with a host-time slice and batched checks. Name the JavaScript helper and define whether “same” means the same count, time slice, or fairness goal. Otherwise the JavaScript part is not directly implementable from this quest. Clarify the quest’s budget requirements by separating Rust and JavaScript
contracts: retain `kio::coop::Budget` for Rust, name JavaScript’s
`Budget.poll()` helper, and specify whether parity means matching the per-stream
count, host-time slice, or fairness goal.

Found in [moq-dev/moq#7085](https://github.com/moq-dev/moq/pull/7085): opting
out of properties on resume drops DYNAMIC_GROUPS along with TIMESCALE. Carry
it from the first subscription, or keep asking for it when the track has it.

Clarify the resumed SUBSCRIBE alternative.

The second option, "keep asking for it when the track has it," has no defined wire form. Track Properties are requested only through the INCLUDE_PROPERTIES parameter, which is a boolean. The encoder writes only the false opt-out. An omitted parameter means properties are wanted. The code has no per-property request for DYNAMIC_GROUPS. The only concrete reading of this option therefore requests all Track Properties on the resumed SUBSCRIBE. That drops the opt-out the Goal requires for an untimed track. It can also bring back the TIMESCALE mismatch that the plan links to PR #7085.

Keep only the first option. Carry DYNAMIC_GROUPS from the first SUBSCRIBE_OK into the resumed state, and keep INCLUDE_PROPERTIES=0 on the resumed request. If an upstream-only request is intended, state that explicitly and keep the downstream opt-out in place.

Proposed wording
- Carry it from the first subscription, or keep asking for it when the track has it.
+ Carry DYNAMIC_GROUPS from the first SUBSCRIBE_OK into the resumed state while preserving INCLUDE_PROPERTIES=0.

Update the resumed SUBSCRIBE guidance to remove the undefined option of
continuing to request properties. Specify that DYNAMIC_GROUPS is carried from
the first SUBSCRIBE_OK into resumed state while preserving INCLUDE_PROPERTIES=0
on the resumed request.

Document the workflow-file push trigger in both guides.

The workflow also runs on pushes to main when .github/workflows/smoke.yml changes. The current text names only test/smoke/, so it gives an incomplete trigger contract. Update this sentence here and in test/smoke/README.md to include the workflow file path.

As per coding guidelines: Fix outdated docs inline; do not add a separate PR for it.

Update the workflow-trigger sentence in the smoke test guide and the matching
sentence in `test/smoke/README.md` to include `.github/workflows/smoke.yml`
among the paths that trigger pushes to `main`; preserve the existing nightly and
dispatch details.

* chore(quest): claim quest/m1/archive/hls-target.md

Quest-Claim: 7e99500173ce54df

* fix(hls): pin EXT-X-TARGETDURATION to the declared duration

Each playlist URI keeps one target for the run: the longest `hls` duration
the broadcast's renditions declare, rounded up. A reconfigure keeps the
original; a rendition added later with longer segments gets its own larger
target. A segment that rounds past the target is listed anyway with a
rate-limited warning, documented as a deliberate RFC 8216 4.3.3.1 deviation.

* fix(hls): keep a returning rendition's target duration

A removed rendition that returns serves the same playlist URI, so its
pinned EXT-X-TARGETDURATION must outlive its last reference.

* fix(hls): derive each target duration instead of pinning one per name

The per-name target map was never pruned, so a publisher churning
rendition names grew it without bound. A new rendition's target is now
the larger of its own declared duration and the longest the first
catalog batch declared, a baseline fixed for the run. A reconfigure
keeps its predecessor's target through the handoff, and nothing per
name persists.

* fix(hls): qualify the target duration's stability to catalog membership

A rendition removed and re-added derives its target from its current
declaration, so a URI whose reconfigure kept an older target can return
with a different one. Say so in the docs and test it directly.

* quest: drop the link to the finished HLS target quest

* quest: plan follow-ups from the 2026-10-29 /quest-complete merges

Ten quests and two quest edits from the follow-ups the merged and queued PRs
raised, each decided with the maintainer, plus a fix to Smoke's docs, which
named a pull-request trigger smoke.yml doesn't have.
