Problem

moq export mp4 --output dropped the fragment it was still buffering when the first SIGINT or SIGTERM arrived (moq-dev/moq#7357 listed this as a follow-up). Only closed fragments were on disk, so an interrupted recording lost up to one GOP, or up to --fragment-duration, of media it had already received.

Approach

As the quest plan decided (2026-10-30), the flush goes through the fMP4 exporter's normal fragment path, so the final moov indexes the flushed fragment like any other.

  • fmp4::Export gets a crate-private stop(). It drops the catalog and every track's source and marks each track finished. The exporter's existing end-of-track path then writes each buffered fragment and each track's pending frame, and next returns None.
  • completed_fragment waits for a stopped track's pending frame to join its buffer before cutting the buffer. That frame then bounds the duration of the last buffered sample instead of a default. Without stop, a finished track never holds a pending frame, so other paths are unchanged.
  • Stopping before the init segment could be written ends without writing and without the TrackUndescribed error. This keeps the old behavior for a signal during startup: no file and a clean exit.
  • mp4::Export::stop() (public) forwards to it.
  • The CLI's run_mp4 calls mp4.stop() on the first signal and keeps writing until next returns None, then finishes the file as before. A second signal still aborts and leaves the file fragmented.

Impact

  • moq-mux: new container::mp4::Export::stop(&mut self), decided above. mp4::Export has not shipped on release yet. Changelog entry under Unreleased, Added.
  • moq-cli: export mp4 --output keeps the fragment it was buffering on the first SIGINT/SIGTERM. No flag changes.
  • No wire changes.

Decisions

  1. Public API. The quest Plan said "Public API: none", but the CLI can only reach the exporter through public moq-mux API.

    • ✅ (a) Keep mp4::Export::stop() (maintainer, 2026-11-01). It adds one method to a type that has not shipped. The caller keeps writing what next returns, so the flushed fragment goes through the same write and index path as every other fragment.
    • (b) Make finish() flush internally and return the flushed bytes in Finish.
    • (c) Same as (a), named end() or close().

Plan correction: the Plan's "Public API: none" becomes "Public API: adds moq_mux::container::mp4::Export::stop()". This PR finishes the quest and deletes its file, so this record stands in for the Plan. The addition is noted in rs/moq-mux/CHANGELOG.md under Unreleased, Added. It is not breaking, so MIGRATE.md is unchanged.

Choices made without asking

  • stop() writes what the exporter already read: the buffered fragments plus one pending frame per track. It does not drain frames still queued in the subscription. The first version drained each source until it had nothing ready, but the local review showed that can chase a publisher that outruns the recording, and it dropped groups waiting behind a sequence gap anyway. A recording that keeps up, the normal case, has read everything it received by the time of the signal.
  • doc/bin/cli.md says finishing writes everything received, including the fragment still buffering, and that a second signal leaves the file without that fragment.

Tests

  • moq-mux container::mp4::tests:
    • stopping_writes_the_buffered_fragments: open GOP and audio group are written.
    • stopping_writes_the_frames_read: a frame read but not yet buffered is written.
    • stopping_before_the_header_writes_nothing: no TrackUndescribed error during startup.
  • The nightly export::an_interrupted_mp4_recording_is_finished (just rs cli-export) now stops feeding bbb_cbr.ts partway into its second 2 s GOP and counts the video frames the relay delivers in-process. Once that count stops growing, it sends SIGINT and checks the finished moov indexes that many video samples. Without the fix it fails 48 vs 56. With the fix it passed 6 of 6 local runs.
  • At 66319ffcdf: cargo test -p moq-mux --lib container::mp4 (9 tests) and container::fmp4 (244) pass, and cargo clippy -p moq-mux -p moq-cli --all-targets -- -D warnings and cargo fmt --check are clean. just check passed at fb026a7309.

  • Head 66319ffcdf12946f996ede0b444ce7bc87bccb24: local review skipped under the simple-review rule (moq-dev/quest#364). Since the last reviewed head it adds only a conflict-free merge of origin/main and one CHANGELOG.md line, so it touches only docs.
  • Last code review: local quest review (Codex, gpt-6.1-sol, medium effort) against origin/main.
    • Round 1, head 75d9adc5c4, 2 findings:
      • [P2] "Freeze track intake when stopping the export": fixed in fb026a7309. stop() ends every source at once, so the drain is bounded.
      • [P2] "Preserve received groups blocked behind a sequence gap": moot after that fix. stop() no longer reads sources, so media not yet readable in order is not written, the same as before this PR.
    • Round 2, head fb026a7309c54c9df02d74bee12839cafb9f1c83: 0 findings.
  • Online reviewers: no findings posted yet.

Follow-ups

  • None new. moq-dev/moq#7560 (repair a crashed mp4 recording, moving to moq repair mp4 <FILE>) is related and touches different files. This PR's docs do not name the repair command.

The first SIGINT or SIGTERM now stops the mp4 export instead of dropping it:
mp4::Export::stop ends each track once it has read what it received, so the
fragment it was buffering goes out through the normal fragment path and the
final moov indexes it. The nightly SIGINT test pauses the feed mid-GOP and
checks every delivered video frame is in the finished file.

Walkthrough

The MP4 export API now supports stopping before the broadcast ends and draining buffered media before finalization. The CLI stops the exporter on cancellation and continues consuming output. Tests check that received samples appear in the finished file. Documentation and planning references were updated. The relay listener also gates the Io re-export on the WebSocket feature.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 1e86c

The export path is supported by the source inspection, but the interruption test can validate the wrong sample set; snapshot the expected count before SIGINT before relying on the test.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "feat(cli): an interrupted mp4 recording keeps its buffering fragment" matches the main change. The CLI's export mp4 --output now keeps the fragment it was buffering when the first SIGINT or SIGTERM arrives. The title is specific and short. It omits the new public mp4::Export::stop() API, which is a secondary point.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description explains the problem (the buffered fragment is lost on the first SIGINT or SIGTERM), the approach (a new stop() on the fMP4 and mp4 exporters, with run_mp4 calling it), the public API decision, the tests added, and the related follow-ups. It matches the changeset closely.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 11 functions across 5 files.

Automated review by review (OpenAI)

Reviewed commit: 66319ffcdf12946f996ede0b444ce7bc87bccb24.

No actionable bugs found. The direction is sound: freeze intake, then reuse the existing fragment emission and indexing paths before finalizing. This keeps shutdown bounded to already-read media and avoids a separate flush/index implementation. The pending-frame ordering preserves duration inference, and the existing second-signal abort remains intact. The previously noted local-review intake problem is addressed by dropping all sources in stop(); unread subscription queues are intentionally outside this contract.

Verification: static review of the changes and relevant exporter, indexing, and shutdown code. Inspected the buffered-fragment, pending-frame, startup-stop, and SIGINT regression tests; I did not execute tests or independently verify the reported local results.

quest land watch: the merge queue removed this pull request at 5975eb4 because its merge_group build failed (failed_checks).

The land fixer works on it in the background, and the watcher re-enqueues it at the back of the queue once it is fixed or judged flaky, or hands it back here with what it needs.

codex / Codex land fixer note:

The failing Io re-export already exists on base, and this PR does not add or tighten the check, so no PR is blamed. Merged base and guarded the re-export with the same websocket feature as its consumer; this changes no runtime behavior. All 2,667 tests across moq-cli, moq-mux, and moq-relay passed with Clippy and warnings denied. Also passed 237 relay library tests without default features, the interrupted MP4 recording process test, and the documentation check/build. A preliminary relay integration run with every default feature disabled failed because those tests require transport features (server init: NoBackend("--listen requires the quic feature")); the transport-enabled integration suite passed. Local Nix-store pkg-config paths supplied the installed ALSA dependency.

1186-1231: Trivial · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Snapshot the expected video count before SIGINT.

The observer uses a separate subscription. Each subscription has its own cursor, and subscribe(None) can skip groups outside that subscription's delivery budget. The observer is therefore not guaranteed to count the exporter's received set. A drain regression can pass when the observer counts a different set that happens to have the same size as the indexed video samples. The final delivered() call also includes any observer deliveries after SIGINT.

Capture the observer count before sending SIGINT and compare the MP4 index with that snapshot.

Snapshot the observer count before sending SIGINT in the export integration
test, then compare indexed video samples against that snapshot instead of
calling delivered() after recording shutdown. Keep the existing
delivery-stability wait and assertion message unchanged.
