quest land serve now screens each PR only when a batch reaches it, instead of screening the whole queue before every batch.

Problem

#322 screens before building a batch:

  • It squashes every queued PR alone onto the base for quest check.
  • It squashes every newly queued PR onto every PR ahead of it, to report conflicts.

With 62 queued PRs on moq, that's about 1,900 git merges per round, and the conflict check is quadratic. After #322 deployed, moq's daemon ran screening at 100% CPU for over 20 minutes and never built a batch. Because a round never finished, screened.json was never written, so every PR stayed "new".

Change

  • build() fills the batch in the policy's order and screens each candidate as it reaches it:
    • squash alone onto the base;
    • reject on quest check findings the base lacks;
    • for a new PR, report conflicts with up to four PRs landing soonest ahead of it;
    • then squash onto the chain.
  • Results are memoized per batch, so a PR is squashed alone at most once per round.
  • PRs a batch doesn't reach wait for a later round. A batch now costs about its candidates times a few merges.
  • README and quest land serve --help describe the new screening.

Checks

  • just check passes.
  • just test passes (733 CLI and 426 Worker tests), run with CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR unset.
  • The 128 existing land tests pass unchanged. A new test checks that a broken PR beyond a batch's reach isn't screened in that round.

Review

quest review --base origin/main (Codex), round 1 on head 321f4ec: no findings.

  • Head ac774f2 gives test/land.test.ts a 30 s timeout, like move, start and landed. Under load 28 on the land gate's host, daemon tests that take 1.1-1.8 s unloaded took 5.2-6.8 s and ejected this PR twice. Test-only, so the review was skipped as trivial.

#322 squashed every queued PR onto the base and every new one onto each PR
ahead of it before building a batch. With 62 queued on moq that is about
1,900 merges, so the daemon screened for over 20 minutes and never built a
batch. Each candidate is now screened as the batch reaches it, memoized per
batch, and a new PR's conflict report covers the four PRs landing soonest.

Walkthrough

The batch builder now screens each candidate when it reaches the batch. It skips candidates with quest check findings absent from the base and checks newly queued candidates against up to four earlier queued PRs for conflicts. A test covers a long queue in which PRs 1–3 land while PR 5 remains queued.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 321f4

Some fresh PRs may miss a conflict report when earlier queued PRs are ineligible. This is a bounded issue to fix or explicitly accept before merging.

Explanation

The title "fix(land): screen only the PRs a batch reaches" names the main change: batch screening now runs per PR as the batch reaches it, instead of screening the whole queue up front. It is specific, concise, and matches the raw summary and PR objectives.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 3 functions across 3 files. Count eligible earlier PRs toward the four-PR overlap limit.

When a fresh PR is reached with at least five earlier entries, the helper limits the queue entries before excluding base conflicts and quest check failures. An eligible fifth entry can therefore be omitted, leaving a conflict with that PR unreported. Collect eligible earlier entries in enqueue order and stop after four.

Update overlaps to collect eligible earlier entries in queue order, applying the
alone and findings checks before counting toward OVERLAP_AHEAD. Stop collection
after four eligible entries, then run the existing reset and squash logic on
that collection so ineligible entries do not consume the limit.

On the land gate's host under load 28, land tests that take 1.1-1.8 s
unloaded took 5.2-6.8 s and failed vitest's 5 s default, ejecting this PR
twice. Like move, start and landed, the file now allows 30 s.

The log shows three tests timing out at five seconds; formatting, type checks, and the other 730 tests passed. I’ll rerun the timed-out tests to check whether the failures were transient.

All three timed-out tests passed on rerun with their default timeout, along with PR 335’s new test. I’ll requeue the PR unchanged and name the flaky tests in the result.
