feat(runner)!: drive opencode 2.x through @opencode/client - #480
The runner's opencode adapter now runs nixpkgs' opencode 2.1.1 and drives it through @opencode/client 2.1.1. The second nixpkgs input that held opencode at 1.19.0 is gone. The flake check comparing the client to pkgs.opencode.version is renamed opencode-sdk → opencode-client, and Dependabot's ignore moves to @opencode/client.
What changed in the adapter (src/runner/opencode.ts):
Launch.opencode serve --stdio --hostname=127.0.0.1 --port=0. The Plan assumed 2.x has no serve; 2.1.1 does. --stdio prints {"url":...} as the readiness handshake, drops the password from the server's environment, and exits when stdin closes. So the server now ends with the runner even if the runner is SIGKILLed; in 1.x it was orphaned.
Turn.session.create → subscribe to events → session.prompt → session.wait → read the reply from message.list. 2.x has no per-prompt system, so the launch writes the system prompt to a private file listed in config instructions. The client uses an unbounded fetch, since Bun's five-minute fetch deadline would cut long waits and the event stream.
Limits. These come from 2.x's structured errors. provider.quota (which 2.x never retries) or a limit message counts as an account limit, on the final error or on session.retry.scheduled. Reset times are still read from ChatGPT-style bodies. 2.x no longer reports a retry-after header or an account_rate_limit reason.
Sign-in. 2.x keeps credentials in opencode.db, not auth.json. auth login runs with --standalone (otherwise it starts opencode's per-user background service daemon) and with the account home as cwd. To read what the account signed in to, the runner asks a private serve --stdio in the account home, once it has loaded, for integration.list (stored credentials, for status) and provider.list. At account add it allows each provider whose integrationID has a stored credential. That covers OpenCode Console's differently named providers, and excludes keyless ones such as the free opencode models. The allowlist goes into the account's own opencode config as a provider.use policy, next to --model. This replaces the per-launch enabled_providers, which read auth.json.
Each sandbox rule, rechecked on 2.1.1 against its source and just runner-sandbox:
Rule
2.x
shell wrapper through srt
Unchanged: <shell> -c <cmd>. The tool is now shell. 2.x's parser only directory-checks cd-like commands, so head/grep attempts reach srt.
keptEnvironment
Unchanged; the test still sees no secrets in a command's environment.
OPENCODE_DISABLE_PROJECT_CONFIG
2.x now skips the checkout's .opencode, .claude, .agents, and opencode.json entirely. New: before each turn the runner refuses if opencode loaded any config but its own and the account's. 2.x loads a machine's managed /etc/opencodeaboveOPENCODE_CONFIG_CONTENT, so such a config could replace the sandboxed shell.
external_directory / webfetch deny
Now native permissions rules, appended after each built-in agent's own rules, so they win (explore allows webfetch on its own). New denies:websearch (server-side network), execute (Code Mode, which carries opencode.session_move/worktree_*, and session_move has no permission check), and browser (reads files by server path).
Saved output
Fixed in review: 2.x saves truncated output to data/opencode/tool-output and shell captures to data/opencode/shell/<project>, and exempts neither from external_directory, so both are now allowed there and in the plugin's read-only roots.
Plugin realpath check
2.x plugins export { id, setup } and hook ctx.tool.hook("execute.before"). Tools are renamed (apply_patch→patch, filePath→path). A configured plugin must be a directory, and one that fails to load is only logged, so the runner now refuses a turn unless its plugin is active. The plugin parses a JSON-string input, so input repair cannot slip a path past it. Fixed in review: it refuses input that is not an object at all, and resolves a leading ~ to the server's home as 2.x's FileAccess.resolvePath does, so ~/data/opencode/shell/… can't pass as a checkout path.
Background work
New in 2.x:shell and subagent take background: true, and their result reaches the session only after session.wait returns, when the runner has already stopped the server. The plugin refuses those calls, so the model runs them in the foreground. opencode's own opencode run has the same gap, and the client has no job API to wait on.
lsp / formatter off
Unchanged.
test/live/runner-sandbox.test.ts now:
signs in through opencode auth import and probes the credential database rather than auth.json;
matches the key with a pattern, since the command text reaches the model;
asserts the exact tool set offered to the model (edit glob grep read shell skill subagent write), so a release that adds a tool fails nightly until reviewed;
asserts the job's instructions reach the model.
The unit tests' fake server now speaks the 2.x API and loads the real plugin directory.
Public API
Breaking for opencode runner accounts: an account added under 1.x records no providers, so its jobs refuse with "remove it and add it again". Migrate with quest runner account remove <id> and quest runner account add opencode [--model …].
No kix wire change.
Merge with main
moq-dev/quest#465 landed first; 899c0683 merges it, keeping both sides:
src/runner/opencode.ts: shellScript uses fix(runner): build srt's seccomp helper so opencode commands can't reach Unix sockets #465's shared srtEnvironment; its doc keeps this PR's 2.x wording (the shell tool, no server password in the environment, since --stdio drops it). runnerAdapters' Unix-socket startup check is unchanged and runs against the patched srt.
quest/m0/kix/sandbox/README.md: both the seccomp-helper sentence and this PR's foreign-config refusal.
quest/m0/kix/sandbox/opencode-data.md (planned on main) loses its Required link to the quest this PR finishes.
6b40e562 then gives the sandbox README's foreign-config refusal its 2.x reason instead of opencode 1.19, from Pullfrog's thread.
moq-dev/quest#471 landed next and moved the LIMIT regex into src/cli/limit.ts. 4083202c merges it: src/runner/opencode.ts imports the shared LIMIT, whose patterns cover the messages the local one matched, and keeps neither side's conflicting hunk, since main's retryLimit read 1.x's SessionStatus retry reasons, which 2.x replaces with the structured errors above. moq-dev/quest#490 and moq-dev/quest#496 merged without conflict.
Choices made without asking
serve --stdio instead of the Plan's --standalone or service. Neither of those serves the client from a per-job process, and --stdio ties the server's life to the runner's.
Refuse 1.x accounts rather than migrate them by reading the legacy auth.json. A migration path would be a compatibility shim. Re-adding costs one interactive sign-in.
Renamed the flake check to opencode-client (name by role; no workflow references it).
Fail loud on foreign config and on an inactive plugin, rather than trusting opencode's defaults.
Refuse background shell/subagent calls rather than wait for them. Waiting would mean tracking each job through the event stream, since the client has no job API, and the work still has to finish before the runner can report the turn.
The provider allowlist is fixed at account add. A provider an OpenCode Console org adds later stays denied until the account is re-added.
Validation
On 6b40e562e4d009d2b6dc2b452ab2db573ce2dac0, in the branch's dev shell:
quest check --fix (no changes), quest check --base origin/main, just check, just test: pass.
just runner-sandbox against opencode 2.1.1 and the seccomp-patched srt: passes (2/2) on the nixos host. On 800d5191 it failed on desktop (Ubuntu) with bwrap: loopback: Failed RTM_NEWADDR: Operation not permitted, since that host has no quest-bwrap AppArmor profile for nixpkgs' bubblewrap 0.12.0; main fails there identically.
Earlier, on 800d5191: nix build of every checks.x86_64-linux output (opencode-client, bun-version, package, quest-tree), .#runner, and .#quest: pass. The merge since changes no Nix input.
Earlier, on a7b4d971: the compiled bundle includes 7 @opencode/client modules and no effect runtime.
Not run: the Kix decision UI rehearsal's live opencode checks. No runner with an opencode account was available to this agent.
Codex gpt-6.1-sol, xhigh effort, via quest review --base origin/main, one session since the earlier merge of main (session 01a1a88a).
Round 1 on 4e08750e59cd428bcc84d1ff68ff5d5174959c05: 1 finding, fixed.
[medium] serve().stop() armed a referenced ten-second kill timer after the server had already closed (as when the binary is missing), holding the CLI open after the error. Fixed in 800d5191: once closed, stop() arms no timer. A fake-timer test on status() with a missing binary fails without the fix.
Round 2 on 800d51910b6cbd32d36401eda3980c7d50c2dca0: no findings.
Earlier rounds on the pre-merge branch (through a7b4d971) and the online reviews on it are answered on their threads.

Nov 4, 2026
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.
Walkthrough
The runner now uses @opencode/client and obtains OpenCode from the selected nixpkgs package set. Account setup records permitted providers and uses authenticated stdio servers. Job configuration and plugin checks constrain tools, paths, and loaded configuration. Turn handling uses session events and prompt APIs, and account limits are derived from structured errors. Unit tests, live sandbox tests, and runner documentation were updated.

ℹ️ Only a trivial cleanup inline; nothing blocking.

Migrate the adapter to opencode 2.x.opencode serve --stdio replaces serve + a string handshake, the password stays in the environment, and the server exits with the runner's stdin instead of orphaning; turns run through @opencode/client (session.create/prompt/wait, message.list pagination, structured SessionStructuredError limits) after a pre-turn refusal check that opencode loaded no config but the runner's and the account's, and that the runner's plugin is active.
Accounts and providers. Sign-in runs auth login --standalone in the account's home, resolves signedInProviders from integration.list × provider.list (OpenCode Console's differently named providers included, keyless ones excluded), and writes a provider.use policy allowlist into the account's config; 1.x accounts refuse until re-added.
Sandbox rules re-checked and extended for 2.x. Permission rules move to the array form with appended-after-agents last-match ordering; new denies websearch, execute, and browser; saved-output roots (tool-output, shell) are read-only allowed; the plugin is a directory loading {id, setup} with execute.before hooks and JSON-string input repair.
Tests, docs, and pins. The unit suite's fake server now speaks the 2.x API and loads the real plugin directory; the live sandbox test asserts the exact offered tool set and that instructions reach the model from opencode.db. @opencode/client replaces @opencode-ai/sdk in package.json/bun.lock/dependabot, the flake drops the second nixpkgs input and renames its check to opencode-client, and the READMEs and quest/ links follow.
Verified against the checkout and upstream: tsc (both projects) and test/runner.test.ts + test/init.test.ts (120 tests) pass here with Node, quest check --base origin/main and prettier are clean, and every @opencode/client call site matches the generated types of the installed 2.1.1 package. A research pass confirmed the external contracts against opencode's upstream source at tag v2.1.1 (stdio JSON handshake and stdin exit, /etc/opencode loading above OPENCODE_CONFIG_CONTENT, {id, setup} plugin shape with execute.before, tool-output/shell saved-output paths, last-match permission semantics with execute/browser actions, auth login/import --standalone into SQLite) and Bun's fetchtimeout: false behavior from its docs (disables the 5-minute default; coexists with the event stream's AbortSignal on the pinned Bun 1.4.2). The unit and live sandbox tests and flake/nix build results in the PR description are the only validation paths dependent on the real opencode binary and were not re-runnable in this ephemeral environment.
The opencode plugin is the file tools' only boundary, so input it cannot
read as an object now fails closed rather than passing with no paths to
check. Also drops a stale duplicate comment in the fake server.

opencode's file tools expand a leading ~ to the server's home, so the
plugin now resolves paths the same way before checking them; otherwise
a write to ~/data/opencode/shell passed as a checkout path. It also
refuses shell and subagent calls in the background, whose results
arrive only after session.wait returns and the runner stops the server.

Fail closed on uncheckable tool input. The plugin's execute.before hook now throws before deriving paths when the repaired input is not an object (null, bare strings, non-parseable JSON), closing the path-check bypass CodeRabbit flagged.
Mirror opencode's ~ resolution. File-tool paths resolve a leading ~/~/… against the server's home (OPENCODE_TEST_HOME falling back to homedir()), so saved-output reads under the account home pass while ~/outside/… and bare ~ are refused; apply_patch→patch headers flow through the same resolver.
Refuse background tool calls.shell and subagent calls with background set are rejected, since unhandled background work would outlive the turn and the server process.
Filter correctness and tests.args?. optionals became validated accesses; the unit suite adds tilde-expanded, non-object, and background: "true"-as-string cases against the real plugin file; the stale duplicate comment in the fake server is gone.
Both integrated contracts verified against opencode upstream at tag v2.1.1 by research passes: an execute.before hook throw runs through packages/plugin/src/promise/adapter.ts into a typed Tool.Error that short-circuits packages/core/src/tool.ts before executeTool, so the refusals actually block execution (and surface the refusal text to the model); and the plugin's ~ handling matches FileAccess.resolvePath corner-for-corner on the Linux runner, including the same Global.Path.home getter and ordering semantics.
quest land watch: the merge queue removed this pull request at a7b4d97 because it conflicts with main (merge_conflict).
The land fixer works on it in the background, and the watcher re-enqueues it at the back of the queue once it is fixed or judged flaky, or hands it back here with what it needs.
PR #480 conflicts with the current base. Its flake.nix change replaces the pinned opencode binding while the base adds sandboxRuntime beside that binding. A local git merge-tree --write-tree base pr-480 reproduced the conflicts. Resolving flake.nix requires editing a path prohibited for this fixer, so the branch is unchanged and build/tests were not run. Please merge the base and resolve all three conflicts before requeuing.

ℹ️ No new code issues — one stale doc phrase inline; the merge and the timer fix both check out.
Reviewed changes — incremental delta since e902150: commits a7b4d971, the merges 899c0683/4e08750 of main (squads sandbox-runtime #465), and 800d5191.
Merged main's sandbox-runtime work (#465).flake.nix gains sandboxRuntime, the READMEs split the seccomp-helper and foreign-config sentences, and a test steps fixture drops a stale comment. shellScript now builds the command's environment through the shared srtEnvironment — verified byte-for-byte against what it replaced ({...keptEnvironment(env), TMPDIR: sandbox.tmp, CLAUDE_CODE_TMPDIR: sandbox.tmp}), so no behavior change; the doc comment drops the duplicated TMPDIR sentence, which srtEnvironment's now carries.
Input-repair order documented.a7b4d971 rewrites the plugin doc comment to say opencode 2.1.1's repair runs before the hook and the plugin repeats its JSON-string and "true" handling, resolving the prior Pullfrog thread (both checks stay).
No kill timer after a closed server.800d5191 arms the SIGKILL escalation in serve().stop() only while the child is still alive, so a server that failed to start no longer leaves a ten-second timer holding the CLI open; covered by a fake-timer test on status() with a missing binary. The close handler still clears an earlier-armed timer, so the normal stop path is unchanged.
Both prior Pullfrog threads (opencode.ts:245-247 ordering, stale fake-server comment) are resolved in the new commits. Verified here: bun install --frozen-lockfile, bun run --silent vitest run test/runner.test.ts (74/74 pass, including the new kill-timer test), and bun run --silent quest check --base origin/main ("78 documents ok").
The sandbox README explained the per-turn config refusal with opencode 1.19,
which this branch removes; the refusal stays because a machine's managed
/etc/opencode loads above the runner's config.

Reviewed changes — reviewed the incremental delta since the prior pullfrog review on 800d519: commits 4083202 (the merge of main, carrying #471 plus the no-conflict #490 and #496) and 6b40e562.
Adopted the shared limit patterns.src/runner/opencode.ts imports LIMIT from src/cli/limit.ts and drops its inline copy. The shared regex is a superset of the deleted one — every literal the adapter matched (usage limit, usage_limit_reached, insufficient_quota, exceeded your current quota, quota exceeded, free usage exceeded) is carried by LIMIT's clauses, with the addition of (?<!not your ) and the spend-cap/budget forms, so accountLimit's classification is unchanged in practice. #471's on-main coverage (test/limit.test.ts) applies directly.
Gave the sandbox README's foreign-config refusal its 2.x reason.6b40e562 recasts the stale "opencode 1.19 still imports the plugins" paragraph: the checkout-config exclusions stay stated as what the runner does on top of disabled project config, and the per-turn refusal is now justified by a machine's managed /etc/opencode loading above the runner's config, matching the wording in README.md. This resolves the prior review's only inline thread.
Verified on this checkout: bun install --frozen-lockfile (the preinstalled tree was missing @opencode/client in this ephemeral environment; reinstall per the lockfile) then vitest run test/runner.test.ts 74/74 (with test/limit.test.ts, 76/76) and quest check --base origin/main ("76 documents ok").

Summary
The runner's opencode adapter now runs nixpkgs' opencode 2.1.1 and drives it through
@opencode/client2.1.1. The second nixpkgs input that held opencode at 1.19.0 is gone. The flake check comparing the client topkgs.opencode.versionis renamedopencode-sdk→opencode-client, and Dependabot's ignore moves to@opencode/client.What changed in the adapter (
src/runner/opencode.ts):opencode serve --stdio --hostname=127.0.0.1 --port=0. The Plan assumed 2.x has noserve; 2.1.1 does.--stdioprints{"url":...}as the readiness handshake, drops the password from the server's environment, and exits when stdin closes. So the server now ends with the runner even if the runner is SIGKILLed; in 1.x it was orphaned.session.create→ subscribe to events →session.prompt→session.wait→ read the reply frommessage.list. 2.x has no per-promptsystem, so the launch writes the system prompt to a private file listed in configinstructions. The client uses an unbounded fetch, since Bun's five-minute fetch deadline would cut long waits and the event stream.provider.quota(which 2.x never retries) or a limit message counts as an account limit, on the final error or onsession.retry.scheduled. Reset times are still read from ChatGPT-style bodies. 2.x no longer reports aretry-afterheader or anaccount_rate_limitreason.opencode.db, notauth.json.auth loginruns with--standalone(otherwise it starts opencode's per-user background service daemon) and with the account home as cwd. To read what the account signed in to, the runner asks a privateserve --stdioin the account home, once it has loaded, forintegration.list(stored credentials, forstatus) andprovider.list. Ataccount addit allows each provider whoseintegrationIDhas a stored credential. That covers OpenCode Console's differently named providers, and excludes keyless ones such as the freeopencodemodels. The allowlist goes into the account's own opencode config as aprovider.usepolicy, next to--model. This replaces the per-launchenabled_providers, which readauth.json.Each sandbox rule, rechecked on 2.1.1 against its source and
just runner-sandbox:shellwrapper through srt<shell> -c <cmd>. The tool is nowshell. 2.x's parser only directory-checkscd-like commands, sohead/grepattempts reach srt.keptEnvironmentOPENCODE_DISABLE_PROJECT_CONFIG.opencode,.claude,.agents, andopencode.jsonentirely. New: before each turn the runner refuses if opencode loaded any config but its own and the account's. 2.x loads a machine's managed/etc/opencodeaboveOPENCODE_CONFIG_CONTENT, so such a config could replace the sandboxedshell.external_directory/webfetchdenypermissionsrules, appended after each built-in agent's own rules, so they win (exploreallowswebfetchon its own). New denies:websearch(server-side network),execute(Code Mode, which carriesopencode.session_move/worktree_*, andsession_movehas no permission check), andbrowser(reads files by server path).data/opencode/tool-outputand shell captures todata/opencode/shell/<project>, and exempts neither fromexternal_directory, so both are now allowed there and in the plugin's read-only roots.{ id, setup }and hookctx.tool.hook("execute.before"). Tools are renamed (apply_patch→patch,filePath→path). A configured plugin must be a directory, and one that fails to load is only logged, so the runner now refuses a turn unless its plugin isactive. The plugin parses a JSON-string input, so input repair cannot slip a path past it. Fixed in review: it refuses input that is not an object at all, and resolves a leading~to the server's home as 2.x'sFileAccess.resolvePathdoes, so~/data/opencode/shell/…can't pass as a checkout path.shellandsubagenttakebackground: true, and their result reaches the session only aftersession.waitreturns, when the runner has already stopped the server. The plugin refuses those calls, so the model runs them in the foreground. opencode's ownopencode runhas the same gap, and the client has no job API to wait on.lsp/formatterofftest/live/runner-sandbox.test.tsnow:opencode auth importand probes the credential database rather thanauth.json;edit glob grep read shell skill subagent write), so a release that adds a tool fails nightly until reviewed; The unit tests' fake server now speaks the 2.x API and loads the real plugin directory.

moq-dev/quest#465 landed first;
899c0683merges it, keeping both sides:flake.nix: nixpkgs' opencode 2.1.1 (no second nixpkgs input) and fix(runner): build srt's seccomp helper so opencode commands can't reach Unix sockets #465'ssandboxRuntime, srt built with its seccomp helper.src/runner/opencode.ts:shellScriptuses fix(runner): build srt's seccomp helper so opencode commands can't reach Unix sockets #465's sharedsrtEnvironment; its doc keeps this PR's 2.x wording (theshelltool, no server password in the environment, since--stdiodrops it).runnerAdapters' Unix-socket startup check is unchanged and runs against the patched srt.quest/m0/kix/sandbox/README.md: both the seccomp-helper sentence and this PR's foreign-config refusal.quest/m0/kix/sandbox/opencode-data.md(planned on main) loses itsRequiredlink to the quest this PR finishes.6b40e562then gives the sandbox README's foreign-config refusal its 2.x reason instead of opencode 1.19, from Pullfrog's thread.moq-dev/quest#471 landed next and moved the
LIMITregex intosrc/cli/limit.ts.4083202cmerges it:src/runner/opencode.tsimports the sharedLIMIT, whose patterns cover the messages the local one matched, and keeps neither side's conflicting hunk, since main'sretryLimitread 1.x'sSessionStatusretry reasons, which 2.x replaces with the structured errors above. moq-dev/quest#490 and moq-dev/quest#496 merged without conflict.Choices made without asking
serve --stdioinstead of the Plan's--standaloneorservice. Neither of those serves the client from a per-job process, and--stdioties the server's life to the runner's.auth.json. A migration path would be a compatibility shim. Re-adding costs one interactive sign-in.opencode-client(name by role; no workflow references it).shell/subagentcalls rather than wait for them. Waiting would mean tracking each job through the event stream, since the client has no job API, and the work still has to finish before the runner can report the turn.account add. A provider an OpenCode Console org adds later stays denied until the account is re-added.Validation
