feat(ts): translate dyn Error as an object of source, Debug, and Display - #442
moq's boxed transport error forwards Error::source through a Box<dyn transport::Error> (transport/boxed.rs), whose trait is over std's Error, and returns a &dyn std::error::Error. Both are refused as "a trait object of another crate's trait". Beyond moq, Box<dyn Error> and ? into it are how stock crates carry errors.
Approach
std's Error is now a trait object's principal, built as the crate's own traits are: an object with source$Error and its supertraits' fmt$Debug and fmt$Display, exported from core/error.Error.ts, and a class per type a coercion wraps (Error.of$errors_Leaf). The object holds only source: type_id's TypeId has no JS value, provide is unstable, and description and cause are deprecated. A call of any of them fails loud as "not a method of dyn Error".
A type that keeps Error's own source gets None, mapped in the library, since std's default isn't lowered. std's source for a &T or Box<T> asks what it points at. Any other std error that overrides source stays an "unsupported call".
From<E: Error> for Box<dyn Error + ...>, which ? converts by, is the coercion of Box<E>, so a boxed &E drops nothing. From a string, which boxes std's private StringError, stays refused.
Tests: errors::objects in the lang fixture's differential test against native wasm32 covers the crate's errors and std's ParseIntError as dyn Error. It walks source chains through the crate's, std's, and no source, writes each by Display and Debug ({:#?} included), and covers moq's shape: a Box<dyn Coded> over Error whose wrapper forwards source, plus an upcast from it to &dyn Error. It also boxes by ? and into into Box<dyn Error + Send + Sync> and counts what the boxes drop, in order, as they drop. It also covers a &Box<E> and a &&E as &dyn Error, and a boxed &Leaf that drops nothing until its owner does. Before review round 1's fixes, those cases failed the differential test (134 differences).
moq-net's "unsupported type from another crate" also drops 81 → 78. No construct gained refusals.
Impact
The translator's output: dyn Error translates instead of failing, as a new Error type in core/error.Error.ts.
No breaking change.
Alternatives
Downcasts by the class of Error.of$T, as dyn Any's: rejected for now. A value upcast from the crate's own trait over Error keeps that trait's class, so the check would answer false where Rust answers true. The quest keeps it, beside the upcast to dyn Any, which needs the same class of the value's own type.
Lowering std's default Error methods from MIR: only source's is needed, and it is None.
Follow-ups
The quest keeps dyn Error's downcasts and the rest. quest/m3/ts-dyn.md will conflict with #437, whichever lands second: keep both removals.

Earlier, round 2 on c496b852 had no findings; round 1 (b9ea8148) found two, both fixed: Error::source's None mapping caught std's forwarding impls for &T and Box<T>, and From into Box<dyn Error> stripped references.

Walkthrough
The compiler now supports translating dyn Error objects, boxing non-string errors into them, and handling standard Error::source calls. Language fixtures add error types and cases that exercise formatting, source chains, conversions, and drop behavior. Documentation describes the support and lists operations that remain unsupported.
Merge Risk: Low · previous review c496b
The change appears mergeable with a bounded testing follow-up: exercise a standard error with a nonempty source chain. No concrete translation or ownership failure is established.

Add a maperr case whose callback returns a different Failure variant.

Add a map_err case whose callback returns a different Failure variant.
The checked case maps only Failure::Parse. A map_err that ignores its callback and returns Parse passes this case with the same output. Add a case whose callback returns another variant, such as Failure::Short, so the differential test detects this regression.

Review comment at @ts/fixtures/lang/src/errors.rs at line 276:
Add a `map_err` differential-test case alongside the `checked` case where the
callback returns `Failure::Short`, and verify the resulting variant so the test
detects implementations that always return `Failure::Parse`.
Add a differential case where a standard error returns a nonempty source.
Add a differential case where a standard error returns a nonempty source.
The new Failure::Parse case wraps ParseIntError, and ParseIntError returns no source. A translation that drops or refuses a standard error's source would still pass the differential test. Add a case that uses a standard error whose source is Some, and check its chain output.

Review comment at @ts/fixtures/lang/src/errors.rs around lines 291 - 292:
Add a differential case in the error-chain fixture using a standard error whose
source is nonempty, and check that `chain` includes the source in its output.
Keep the existing `ParseIntError` case; choose an error type whose `source()`
returns `Some` so the test covers that behavior.

I merged base locally, resolved the documentation conflicts while retaining both sides' intent, preserved all four added harness cases, and regenerated the TypeScript harness. All 380 generated language files matched the resulting snapshots. Validation then exposed a deterministic floating-point mismatch that cannot be corrected mechanically.
From ts/, UPDATE_EXPECT=1 cargo test --locked --test fixtures lang -- --exact --nocapture failed with:
The input is a6c09700bfff8568ff4f2c3440ff6311ffa818ff9f1fbf2ff710668f43bcffbade79a200e7ff0aff. With the combined harness's 261 cases, selector 0xa6c0 selects index 145, floats::mul_adds. Running this input alone reproduces a difference at output byte 207: native 0xaa, TypeScript 0xab (one ULP). The corresponding f64 bits are native 3f41e8176d8609aa, TypeScript 3f41e8176d8609ab.
The floating-point Rust fixture, its generated TypeScript, and ts/runtime/rt/float.ts are unchanged from base. Adding the PR's harness case changes the selector modulus and exposes this input to the existing floating-point implementation. A maintainer needs to decide and review the numerical correction or intended test acceptance before retrying the landing.
Other validation passed (commands run from ts/): cargo build --locked -p lang-fixture; cargo test --locked -p lang-fixture; cargo test --locked --bin rust2-ts --test runtime (15 tests); cargo test --locked --test fixtures -- --skip lang --skip stable_names (10 tests); cargo clippy --locked --all-targets -- -D warnings; cargo fmt --all --check; tsc -p runtime.
I aborted the local merge after diagnosis. The PR branch remains at its pinned head, with no committed changes.
codex / Codex land fixer: In ts/, UPDATE_EXPECT=1 cargo test --locked --test fixtures lang -- --exact --nocapture failed: "709559 cases, 84408 panics, 125 aborts, 1 differences"; floats::mul_adds reproduces a one-ULP f64 misma. Recommendation: Re·solve the five base conflicts preserving both sides, then have a maintainer review the f64::mul_add rounding correction or intended test acceptance and rerun the language differential test.
