Problem

VecDeque::as_slices and as_mut_slices were refused, as was {:?} of a deque's Iter, IterMut, and Drain. Each depends on where std's ring buffer places its items: the runtime's buffer had a power-of-two length, so it could not match std's split.

Approach

  • An rt.VecDeque now holds std's exact capacity as its buffer's length, plus its item size s. A deque of bytes is a Uint8Array, so as_slices of a VecDeque<u8> views the bytes without copying.

  • Each step that moves items does it the way std's does:

    • growth by grow_amortized and handle_capacity_increase;
    • shrink_to's four cases;
    • insert and remove move the shorter side;
    • clear resets the head;
    • a Drain joins the shorter side when dropped;
    • extend reserves as std's two spec_extend paths do;
    • clone and clone_from/clone_into are std's;
    • collect of a deque's or a Vec's IntoIter takes over its buffer and head. A Vec<u8>'s into_iter now runs over its whole buffer, whose length is its exact capacity, so that applies to bytes too. A clone of a Vec's IntoIter copies what is left into a buffer of exactly that capacity, as std's does, even for items that clone as themselves.
  • A Vec holds std's capacity where std reuses a buffer, so a deque made from it splits as std's: a collect in place through adaptors keeps the source's buffer, a plain IntoIter keeps it by std's reuse rule, clone_from keeps the target's, a boxed slice's capacity is its length, extend_from_slice reserves the whole slice at once, and concat and join reserve their total.

    Zero-sized items get usize::MAX capacity, with index math wrapping as std's does on wasm32.

  • Iter and IterMut are std's two slices, swapped where next, next_back, and advance_by swap them. try_fold reads them without swapping. Their Debug writes both slices, and Drain's writes its four counts.

  • A dropped Drain now counts as dropping, so drop(q.drain(..)) joins the deque.

Consumer: std's VecDeque API, planned in m3 as part of all of std. moq calls VecDeque in its codec bench (push), which this keeps translating.

Proven by a new rings lang fixture, which the differential test runs against native wasm32. It covers 4,320 runs of 24 kinds of step, plus 960 that remake the deque each way remade can (clone, clone_from, clone_into, collected from a partly read IntoIter of the deque or of a Vec, or from that iterator's clone, or a Vec filtered in place), starting from new, with_capacity, and From<Vec> deques of u8, u32, String, (), and a 1,100-byte item (std grows those from one slot). After each step it writes the length, capacity, as_slices, and the Iter's Debug around partial reads from either end, by nth and by try_fold. Drains are written read in part, and IterMut and as_mut_slices written through. capacity::deques now checks the exact capacity after every step, and capacity::vecs checks it exactly past clone_from, concat, a boxed slice, an in-place collect, and extend_from_slice. On the measured exact-capacity branch these steps came from, mutants that drop the in-place capacity, always reuse a plain IntoIter's buffer, ignore clone_from's target, or skip concat's reserve failed 68, 112, 48, and 20 cases. A mutant of regrow's head placement fails 1,661 cases, and one that shares a cloned Vec iterator's buffer fails 737.

Impact

  • Breaking runtime API, with a ts/MIGRATE.md entry:
    • rt.dequeNew, rt.dequeWithCapacity, and rt.dequeFromVec take the item size and whether the deque holds bytes.
    • rt.dequeCapacity, rt.dequeReserve, rt.dequeReserveExact, rt.dequeShrinkTo, rt.dequeClone, rt.dequeExtend, and rt.dequePart no longer take the size.
    • rt.dequeIter no longer takes a dropper; rt.dequeIntoIter is into_iter.
    • rt.vecExtendFromSlice takes the element size after the slice; rt.iterToArray and rt.iterToByteVec take the source's element size last.
  • New runtime exports: itself, byteVecIntoIter, dequeAsSlices, dequeByteSlices, dequeIntoIter, dequeFromArray, dequeFromIntoIter, dequeCloneFrom, fmtDequeIter, fmtDequeDrain, vecClonedInto, and byteVecClonedInto.
  • Translator output: the calls above now translate, dequeNew and friends gain the size argument, a Vec<u8>'s owned into_iter is byteVecIntoIter, and a Vec's IntoIter of items that clone as themselves clones by { v: rt.itself }. A Vec's clone_from keeps the target's capacity, a collect that may reuse its source passes the source's element size, and a boxed slice's into_vec and into_iter are rt.vecExact.
  • Cost: a 65,536-push bench measured 2.9 ms against 2.9 ms on main after warmup, within 1%. The Vec pieces were measured on every TS bench workload in Node, Bun, Chrome, and Firefox, all within noise.

Alternatives

  • Keeping power-of-two buffers and computing std's split on demand. Rejected: std's split depends on the whole history of growth and shrinking, so it has to be simulated anyway.

Follow-ups

  • quest/m3/ts-vec-exact-capacity.md: a deque made from a Vec shrunk by a pop, truncate, or drain takes the guarantee-only capacity (see Decision). It now records the measurement and the untried Vec wrapper.
  • quest/m3/ts-constant-compares.md: size_of::<T>() == 1 in a generic function translates to 12 === 1, which tsc rejects.
  • If feat(ts): translate VecDeque::range, str::rsplit_once, and split_terminator #434 (VecDeque::range) lands first, its Iter needs a DequeIter over the range for its split and Debug.

Decision

The maintainer kept the guarantee-only Vec capacity model on 2026-11-02. A deque made from a Vec that a pop, truncate, or drain shrank can split its slices differently from std's after a later grow; a Vec<u8> is unaffected, as it holds its exact capacity.

Making it exact by recording the capacity on each pop was measured on a push/stack workload (pushes with a pop every fourth, then pops to empty): 1.24x in Node, 1.11x in Chrome, 2.3x in Bun, and 2.8x in Firefox. That design was dropped, and only the pieces that cost nothing were kept here (see Approach). A Vec wrapper holding its own length and capacity is the untried alternative, recorded in the quest.

Review

Codex, gpt-6.1-sol, medium effort. The first session ran five rounds; the last on b202d7b had no findings.

  • Round 1 (26bc85d): clone_into of a deque had regressed to unsupported. Fixed in 6a6c21b: it lowers to dequeCloneFrom with its arguments reversed, and is covered by the fixture.
  • Rounds 1 and 2: a Vec<u8>'s into_iter collected into a deque lost its capacity and position. Fixed in 4389572 (byteVecIntoIter), and the fixture no longer skips bytes.
  • Round 3 (21de74b): a clone of a Vec's IntoIter shared the original buffer and front. Fixed in fb531cc: it copies into a buffer of its own, of exactly what is left. A mutant fails 737 of the remade cases.
  • Rounds 4 (fb531cc) and 5 (b202d7b, a merge of main): no findings.

A new session reviewed the Vec capacity pieces (577eef4): round 1 had no findings, and round 2, on head 1b056aa after merging main twice, had none.

Walkthrough

The runtime replaces deque capacity tracking with ring-buffer storage and adds slice, iterator, drain, cloning, and conversion operations. Vector and iterator collection paths now pass element-size information and adjust capacity. The translator maps Rust collection operations to the revised runtime APIs. The change adds deque fixtures across multiple item types and updates generated fixtures, migration guidance, and runtime documentation.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 1b056

The change is mergeable with bounded follow-up: document when Vec-derived deque slices may differ from Rust and strengthen destructor tests for clear and clone_from.

Nitpick Cover destructor effects for VecDeque::clear and clonefrom.

7-12: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Cover destructor effects for VecDeque::clear and clone_from.

The rings fixture cannot observe destructors. None of its item types implements Drop, and its differential output contains only bytes. The capacity::deques item types also lack Drop. The changed dequeClear runs dropAll only when a drop callback is supplied. dequeCloneFrom forwards its drop callback to dequeClear before it clones the source items. No inspected fixture clears or clone_froms a VecDeque whose items log their drops. A skipped or misordered drop on these paths can therefore leave the differential output unchanged. Drain already has drop-order coverage in bounds.rs.

Add a VecDeque case with a drop-logging item to an existing logging fixture, such as ts/fixtures/lang/src/bounds.rs. The case should call clear, then clone_from on a deque of logging items. Record each drop in out, and regenerate the matching expected output.

Document the shrunk-Vec split exception in the VecDeque description.

The as_slices sentence says every deque splits as std's. A deque made from a Vec that pop, truncate, or drain shrank can split differently. That case is not stated in ts/README.md or ts/MIGRATE.md. Name the exception in the same sentence.
