feat(ts): translate std::iter::zip as Iterator::zip - #444
std::iter::zip(a, b) was an "unsupported call", and with a &mut to a collection of values JS copies, a refused mapping. a.into_iter().zip(b) already translated. Found while writing #391.
Approach
The free zip lowers as std's does: a through IntoIterator, then Iterator::zip's mapping with b. Both share one zip helper in lower/iter.rs.
The check that a mapping lends places now counts either argument of the free zip given by into_iter, as it counted Iterator::zip's argument. So zip(&mut v, ..) lends each element as its place.
arrays::flattened proves it against native wasm32 with three new zips, each at 0, 1, and 5 bytes per array:
zip(&other, options.iter().flatten()), which reads;
zip(&mut other, &mut options), which writes through both sides;
zip(&mut Vec<u16>, ..), which writes each element.
Impact
Translator output only: std::iter::zip translates where it was refused. No runtime API changes.
Alternatives
None worth weighing: zip is defined as a.into_iter().zip(b).
Review
quest review, Codex gpt-6.1-sol at medium effort, two rounds, no findings. Round 2 reviewed head ea89fafdbf3622e56ed10b25f73e4db22b438c62, which differs from round 1's head only by rustfmt.
The free zip takes each side by IntoIterator, so a &mut to a collection of
values JS copies lends its places on either side, as Iterator::zip's
argument does.

Walkthrough
The translator now lowers free std::iter::zip calls through a shared helper also used by Iterator::zip. Place lending recognizes free zip when either input type satisfies into_places. Array fixtures add zipped iteration cases, and expected TypeScript output includes the generated cases and an optional-value map helper. The deferred-work entry and plan for free zip are removed.
Merge Risk: Minimal · previous review ea89f
Free zip support has no demonstrated blocking defect. Additional owned-input and absent-value tests would improve confidence, but the identified gaps do not prevent merging after normal checks.

Add an owned Vec first argument to the free zip fixture.
Every free-zip call in ts/fixtures/lang/src/arrays.rs passes a borrowed or mutably borrowed first argument. The fixture would stay green if free zip stopped handling an owned Vec first argument. Add one loop such as for (b, a) in std::iter::zip(vec![1u8], &other) { ... } that consumes the pair, so the owned path is exercised.

Review comment at @ts/fixtures/lang/src/arrays.rs at line 501:
Add a free-zip loop alongside the existing `std::iter::zip` fixture that passes
an owned `Vec` as its first argument and consumes the resulting pairs, ensuring
the owned-vector path is exercised.
Exercise the None arm of the mutable zip in the fixture.
Exercise the None arm of the mutable zip in the fixture.
The mutable zip at line 505 pairs other only with options[0], which is always Some. No fixture input reaches the None arm of the generated Option::map helper. A regression in that arm would pass the fixtures. Pair other with the None entry at options[2] too, then regenerate the snapshots with UPDATE_EXPECT=1 just ts test.

Review comment at @ts/fixtures/lang/src/arrays.rs around lines 505 - 510:
Update the fixture’s mutable zip processing so `other` is also paired with the
`None` entry at `options[2]`, exercising the `None` arm of the `Option::map`
helper. Preserve the existing processing for the `Some` entry and apply the same
mutation behavior to the additional pair.
