feat(ffi): compare and hash Kotlin's Bytes by content - #448
Kotlin's Bytes had no equals or hashCode, so it compared by identity: a generated data class holding bytes, such as a Packet with a payload, equalled only itself and could not key a map. Rust's Bytes and Vec<u8> compare by content. Found by moq-dev/rust2#432.
Closes the quest quest/m3/ffi-kotlin-bytes-equality.md.
Approach
Bytes.equals checks identity, then size, then contents; hashCode hashes the contents. Both read through a java.nio.ByteBuffer wrapping the bytes in Kotlin's memory: Kotlin's own (whole or a slice) are wrapped in place, and Rust's lent ones are copied across in one copyInto call, the same __bytes_copy JNI call that keeps the buffer alive during the read. ByteBuffer.equals and hashCode compare and hash the remaining bytes in bulk on every JVM and Android level.
Different sizes return before any crossing. So a comparison costs at most one crossing per lent side, and none for Kotlin-held or copied bytes.
The hash is not cached: no consumer hashes the same Bytes repeatedly, and the quest asks for a measurement first.
Test (tests/api.kt, owned, run by api_kotlin): four ranges of one body (lent whole, copied, the same size shifted by one, empty), each as Kotlin-held, Kotlin-held sliced, Rust's (lent or copied by size), and a slice of Rust's lent bytes. Every pair is equal exactly when its range matches, equal pairs hash alike, records holding each compare and hash the same way and find their key in a HashMap, a set keeps one per range, bytes differing only in their last byte differ, and Bytes never equals a ByteArray. Without the fix it fails at the first pair.
Impact
Kotlin Bytes (breaking, unreleased): equals and hashCode compare and hash its contents. Code relying on identity uses ===. ffi/MIGRATE.md's unreleased Kotlin bytes entry says so; ffi/README.md documents it.
Consumer: every generated Kotlin record holding bytes, such as moq's, now compares by its fields as a data class should. just ffi moq passes.
Alternatives
A JNI __bytes_equals / __bytes_hash in the glue: one crossing for lent against lent and no copy, but a new native per operation and its contract churn for a case no consumer hits. Copying keeps the glue as it is.
A hand-written loop over the two storages: as fast after JIT, but more code than ByteBuffer's, and Java 9's ranged Arrays.equals needs Android API 33.
Follow-ups
moq-dev/rust2#430's follow-up quest/m3/ffi-cpp-shared-future.md was also in this session's brief but is still blocked by quest/m1/ffi-export/lifetimes.md, so quest start refused it.

Walkthrough
Generated Kotlin Bytes now compares and hashes by byte contents for Kotlin-owned and Rust-lent storage. Tests cover byte sequences and packets, including sliced ranges and map and set key use. The Kotlin documentation describes content-based equality and identity comparisons. The related quest checklist item and design note were removed.
Merge Risk: Low · previous review 5affd
Content equality is implemented, but collection operations on Rust-lent byte keys repeatedly copy their contents. The remaining risk is bounded performance overhead suitable for owner awareness or follow-up.

Hash lent bytes in chunks instead of copying the whole range.
For a Rust-lent value longer than 1024 bytes, hashCode() calls contents(), which copies the full range into a new ByteArray on every call. Each HashMap or HashSet lookup that hashes such a key repeats that copy. Hashing in fixed-size chunks bounds the temporary allocation. The result matches ByteBuffer.hashCode() over the same bytes, so hash values do not change.
Suggested fix
- override fun hashCode(): Int = contents().hashCode()+ override fun hashCode(): Int {+ var hash = 1+ val chunk = ByteArray(minOf(size, 1024))+ var end = size+ while (end > 0) {+ val start = maxOf(0, end - chunk.size)+ copyInto(chunk, 0, start, end)+ for (i in end - start - 1 downTo 0) hash = 31 * hash + chunk[i]+ end = start+ }+ return hash+ }
equals still copies lent values on each call when the sizes match. This change does not address that path.

Update hashCode() to hash the value’s bytes in fixed-size chunks instead of
calling contents() and copying the entire range; preserve
ByteBuffer.hashCode()’s byte order and result, using the existing range-copy
mechanism and keeping temporary allocation bounded for large values.
