Folds from the back, and a crate's own folds - #463
DoubleEndedIterator::rfold and try_rfold were an "unsupported call" for every iterator. A crate's own iterator that overrode fold, nth_back, or another provided method std's adaptors call was refused outright ("overriding _, which std's adaptors call in place of next or beside it"). #436 found both.
Approach
rfold maps to the new rt.iterRfold, built on each rt.Iter's existing rfold, as iterFold is on fold.
try_rfold maps to rt.iterTryRfold. It steps as folded() reads try_rfold and breaks on the closure's None (rt.None where that is the None), or on Err for a Result or ControlFlow. Its closure drops as it returns, and the iterator, which it borrows, does not.
rt.iterFrom(source, next, drop, own) now takes an rt.Own record of the crate's own methods, not one positional parameter each. It now also has nth, nth_back, fold, rfold, count, and last. FromNext calls each where std's adaptors and consumers call it: Skip/StepBy/Chain call nth, Rev calls nth_back and rfold, Map::fold and for_each/sum/count/last defaults call fold, and Chain/Skip/Fuse/Peekable call count and last.
The by-value four (fold, rfold, count, last) are passed only for an iterator the consumer owns. Through &mut, std reads by try_fold, as it does natively.
A crate's fold<B, F> is translated once, for B = Option<u32> and F = Box<dyn FnMut(B, Item) -> B>. F's JS value is the closure FromNext gives it, wrapped with rt.closure so that dropping it runs std's release. So the crate's body drops std's closure, and with it each adaptor's closure, wherever it drops f. A closure std only lends, as Chain lends its first half's, is wrapped without a release, so the body's drop of it drops nothing.
drops_iter now also routes an iterator holding such a crate iterator by value through each consumer's fold path (iterCount becomes ownedCount and so on), so the override is called instead of a next loop.
check_impl still refuses any other override, such as find or for_each. A fold/rfold is accepted only if its body, and each closure in it, is parametric in B and F, since it is translated for one of each (erases, over the generic MIR). It refuses, at the offending span:
an Option or Poll of B, whose rt.None would be the translated one's;
a call generic over B or F, other than F's Fn* calls and std's Iterator/DoubleEndedIterator methods, which are refused too when a type of the crate holds B or F;
a constant generic over either, such as size_of::<B>();
a drop (or mem::drop) of B, or of a type of the crate over either.
A closure counts through what it captures, and its body is checked on its own. All of this is narrower than today's blanket refusal of fold, so no new refusal reaches code that translated before.
Tests (differential against native wasm32):
lang's ends: a new Overrides iterator overrides all six methods and logs each call. The new folded consumer set runs 16 picks: fold, rfold (one panics past k items with the log so far), try_rfold by Option (including an Option accumulator whose Some(None) continues), by Result, and by ControlFlow through by_ref().rev(), plus count, last, sum, for_each, max, min_by_key, chain, skip, rev, step_by, fuse, peekable, and &mut. These run over Run, Counted, Overrides, a Box<Overrides>, and a box of a map of one, with empty, short, and long runs. caller.ts now names 100,352 ends inputs (was 28,672).
lang's zips reads each kind of zip through a box, a box of its skip, and a &mut to a box of either, by every consumer, beside feat(ts): read a boxed iterator as std's Iterator for Box<I> does #490's dyns cases. With rt.iterBox's wrap removed, ends shows 4,298 differences, iters 4, and dyns 62.
task's rfolded grows from 9 to 18 scenarios with guards that log their drops:
rfold with a dropping accumulator, and a dropping closure over an iterator that drops nothing.
try_rfold breaking by None, by Err through map, and by Break through chain, then read on.
Both over empty iterators.
A crate Pile iterator whose own fold/rfold drops std's closure before noting it folded. It is read through map, for_each, count, last, rev, skip, chain, nth_back, and &mut.
A try_rfold that panics with the log of what dropped before.
lang's Overrides::rfold delegates to std's fold through a closure holding f, the accepted shape of a delegating override.
reject: Folds holds its accumulator in an Option, and Backs overrides rfind. Six new iterators cover each other refusal: Keeps (a generic helper from a closure), Sizes (const { size_of::<B>() }), Discards (a scope drop of B), Disposes (drop(init)), Probes (a crate iterator over B through count), and Measures (a closure holding f passed to a generic helper).
Mutation checks: each runtime piece, mutated in the translated output and rerun against both differentials, is killed. That covers each FromNext override switched off, release dropped early or late, try_rfold disposing late or never on break, stepping from the front, a raw result, or undefined for rt.None, and rfold reading from the front, folding forward, or losing its release. Three survive:
not clearing FromNext.drop before an own fold, or before an own count/last (two mutants), which no consumer disposes after (kept, as [Symbol.dispose] stays idempotent);
folded(true) in try_rfold, which differs only for a by-index zip's fold.
Translator mutants, each killed by retranslating:
drops_iter without the own-fold check (lang, 1,848 differences);
passing the by-value methods through &mut (task, 163 differences);
erases without its closure recursion, its upvar rule, or its crate-type rule, allowing mem::drop of B, or exempting every call (reject).
A mutant checking unwind cleanup blocks too survived, since wasm32's panic=abort MIR has none, so that skip was deleted.
Impact
Public API: the translator's output only. rfold, try_rfold, and a crate's own nth, nth_back, fold, rfold, count, and last translate instead of being refused.
Breaking: rt.iterFrom's optional parameters after drop become one rt.Own record, noted in ts/MIGRATE.md. New runtime exports: rt.Own, rt.iterRfold, rt.iterTryRfold.
Every generated rt.iterFrom now passes the crate's functions directly where no wrapping is needed (next, size_hint, len, fold, count), rather than through lambdas. That is the snapshot churn in stock, crates, and lang.
Alternatives
Translate the crate's fold per (B, F) instance std instantiates it at. Those are std-internal closure types, reached only through std's MIR, and the runtime calls one fold.
Instantiate F as a fn pointer. Its drop vanishes, so std's closure, and each adaptor's closure in it, would drop after the crate's fold returns instead of where its body drops f. task's Pile cases catch that order.
Keep iterFrom's positional parameters. That would mean ten optional parameters.
Follow-ups
A crate's own find and for_each (quest/m3/ts-iter-own-calls.md, added here): overrides of find, rfind, and find_map, which Filter, FilterMap, SkipWhile, Fuse, Chain, and Rev call, and of for_each, which std's Extend impls call, are still refused. try_fold, try_rfold, and advance_by can be overridden only on nightly.
try_fold itself is ts-closure-calls's, and builds on iterTryRfold. The quest now says so.
ControlFlow::break_value has no mapping; the task case matches on the ControlFlow instead.
Review
quest review (codex gpt-6.1-sol, medium), eight rounds, clean at head 627bc4178d8299ab93b0e2dd8472111468f8f741, the head being merged:
Three findings, all fixed: Chain lending its closure to a crate's own fold, which dropped it there (reproduced in task case 16, then fixed in FromNext.folds); size_of::<B>() and a helper generic over B seeing the translated Option<u32> (the erases check replaced the Option/Poll local check).
Two findings, both fixed: a crate iterator over B behind the exempt Iterator calls, and a closure holding f passed to a generic helper. Closures now count through their captures, and exempt calls refuse the crate's types over B or F.
Clean.
Clean, after merging main, which touched only reject's snapshots, regenerated.
After merging test(ts): split lang into a fixture per module and key reject's refusals by item #474's per-module fixture layout (ends' inputs moved to lang/ends/caller.ts, the fold refusals to reject's iters module): a Box<Own> reached the crate's own count, where std's box counts by next. Fixed, reproduced first by ends' new boxed kinds (2,148 differences).
The same for a box of a map of one. Fixed at the source with a box reader of std's dispatch.
…lds generic in more than moves
A chain lends its closure to its first half's own fold, which dropped it there.
The crate's fold, translated for one accumulator and closure, now refuses a body
that tells either apart: a call or constant generic over them, or a drop of the
accumulator, in it or its closures.

…ure apart through a closure or a type of the crate
A closure is over what it captures, and std's iterators take any accumulator
and closure only outside the crate's own types.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The runtime and compiler now support selected crate-defined iterator overrides, including nth, folds, count, and last. Reverse-fold handling includes Option, Result, and ControlFlow exits. Fixtures cover override dispatch, fold behavior, iterator drop handling, and fold patterns that the compiler rejects. Generated iterator constructions now pass operation records to rt.iterFrom.

Reduce the chained count sum to the usize range.
When ownedCount counts a chain that holds a crate iterator with a count override returning usize::MAX, the ChainIter branch returns n + count(b, drop) without a range check. If the other part counts 1, the result is 4294967296, which a wasm32 usize cannot hold. Check the sum the same way the sum helper does.

Refuse own folds that drop the accumulator inside std consumers.
tells skips the accumulator check for std Iterator and DoubleEndedIterator calls. A fold that moves B into once(init).count() or a similar consumer is accepted. std drops B inside that call, and the translated fold does not reproduce that drop. Extend the check to by-value consumers over B, and add a rejection fixture for that path.

…y last of its by-value overrides
Box<I>'s Iterator forwards next, size_hint, nth, last, next_back, nth_back, and len, and folds and counts by next, so a box of the crate's own iterator no longer calls its fold, rfold, or count. lang's ends reads a Box<Overrides> through every consumer and fold.

…rwards nothing else
A box of a sized iterator, owned or behind a &mut, is an rt.iterBoxed: it forwards next, size_hint, nth, last, next_back, nth_back, and len, as std's Iterator for Box<I> does, and folds, counts, and advances by next. This replaces the last commit's filter of a crate iterator's own methods, which missed a box of an adaptor holding one. lang's ends reads a box of Overrides and of a map of it, and zips reads boxes of each zip, skipped and borrowed. Finishes quest/m3/ts-box-folds.md.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Heads-up from #490, now queued: it wraps every box of an iterator (std's, the crate's own, or a trait object), owned or behind &mut, in a new rt.iterBox. That wrapper forwards only what std's Iterator for Box<I> forwards, last among them, and reads everything else by next. Once #490 lands, the boxed flag f1e9b4c adds to own_methods is redundant, because the box wrapper never calls the held rt.iterFrom's fold/rfold/count. It can be dropped when this branch merges main. #490's call hunk (first, into_iter(b, self_ty, first, span)) matches this branch's line for line.
The boxed flag from f1e9b4c is gone. Round 6 found the same gap for a box of a map of a crate iterator, so c064c0b replaced the flag with a box reader, rt.iterBoxed. It forwards what std's Iterator for Box<I> does (last included, also through iterLast), reads the rest by next, and covers a box behind &mut. That commit also deletes quest/m3/ts-box-folds.md. The queued head, 9f0a80c, sits ahead of #490, so #490 will duplicate rt.iterBoxed and conflict in into_iter. Whichever lands second should keep one reader. The call hunk (first, into_iter(b, self_ty, first, span)) is the same in both.
quest land watch: the merge queue removed this pull request at 9f0a80c because it conflicts with main (merge_conflict).
The land fixer works on it in the background, and the watcher re-enqueues it at the back of the queue once it is fixed or judged flaky, or hands it back here with what it needs.
Brings main's per-module fixture layout through #463's merge of it. The scan cases reject no longer holds move out of reject's iters module.

Keeps one box reader, main's rt.iterBox from #490, and deletes this branch's rt.iterBoxed with its own wrapping in into_iter. iterBox already forwards only what std's Box<I> does, so a box of the crate's own iterator, or of an adaptor holding one, never reaches its by-value overrides. ends' boxed Overrides cases and zips' boxed reads stay beside #490's dyns cases.

Mergingmainkept feat(ts): read a boxed iterator as std's Iterator for Box<I> does #490's reader alone, and this PR's cases for it stay.drops_iternow also routes an iterator holding such a crate iterator by value through each consumer's fold path (iterCountbecomesownedCountand so on), so the override is called instead of anextloop.check_implstill refuses any other override, such asfindorfor_each. Afold/rfoldis accepted only if its body, and each closure in it, is parametric inBandF, since it is translated for one of each (erases, over the generic MIR). It refuses, at the offending span:OptionorPollofB, whosert.Nonewould be the translated one's;BorF, other thanF'sFn*calls and std'sIterator/DoubleEndedIteratormethods, which are refused too when a type of the crate holdsBorF;size_of::<B>();mem::drop) ofB, or of a type of the crate over either.A closure counts through what it captures, and its body is checked on its own. All of this is narrower than today's blanket refusal of
fold, so no new refusal reaches code that translated before.Tests (differential against native wasm32):

The newfoldedconsumer set runs 16 picks:fold,rfold(one panics pastkitems with the log so far),try_rfoldbyOption(including anOptionaccumulator whoseSome(None)continues), byResult, and byControlFlowthroughby_ref().rev(), pluscount,last,sum,for_each,max,min_by_key,chain,skip,rev,step_by,fuse,peekable, and&mut. Impact
rfold,try_rfold, and a crate's ownnth,nth_back,fold,rfold,count, andlasttranslate instead of being refused.rt.iterFrom's optional parameters afterdropbecome onert.Ownrecord, noted ints/MIGRATE.md. New runtime exports:rt.Own,rt.iterRfold,rt.iterTryRfold.rt.iterFromnow passes the crate's functions directly where no wrapping is needed (next,size_hint,len,fold,count), rather than through lambdas. That is the snapshot churn instock,crates, andlang.Alternatives
foldper(B, F)instance std instantiates it at. Those are std-internal closure types, reached only through std's MIR, and the runtime calls onefold.Fas afnpointer. Its drop vanishes, so std's closure, and each adaptor's closure in it, would drop after the crate'sfoldreturns instead of where its body dropsf.task'sPilecases catch that order.iterFrom's positional parameters. That would mean ten optional parameters.Follow-ups
quest/m3/ts-iter-own-calls.md, added here): overrides offind,rfind, andfind_map, whichFilter,FilterMap,SkipWhile,Fuse,Chain, andRevcall, and offor_each, which std'sExtendimpls call, are still refused.try_fold,try_rfold, andadvance_bycan be overridden only on nightly.try_folditself is ts-closure-calls's, and builds oniterTryRfold. The quest now says so.ControlFlow::break_valuehas no mapping; thetaskcase matches on theControlFlowinstead.Review
