Problem

#516 found four shapes where a whole write into a vector's element, followed by a raw pointer into a part of it, is refused ("a raw pointer to (u8, u8) in ..., which the crate may put another object in place of"), for concrete types and type parameters alike:

  • A shared borrow of the vector, or of the array it was collected from (v.len(), rows.iter().copied().collect()): Trace::origins gave up on any local a shared borrow takes, as if the borrow could change it.
  • A by-value for over an array: array::IntoIter::next gets a &mut to an iterator holding the elements in place, which counted as replacing their parts, since fills_fresh judged only a &mut to a type kept as an object.
  • A vector of a type that holds a byte in place: RawVec's buffer is a NonNull<u8>, so points_to read it as pointing at that byte, a part of the filled value.
  • first_mut and get_mut: not a separate cause. Each translates in isolation. replaced is crate-wide, so Fresh writes through a zip, a copy, and a repeat #516 saw them refused through a type that another of these shapes replaced.

Consumer: the lengths fixture now uses all four shapes (they were stepped around in #516), and so can any crate that fills a vector's slots this way.

Approach

  • holders.rs defs: a shared (or fake) borrow no longer marks its local as changed elsewhere, unless the borrowed type may reach an UnsafeCell (mutable_through_shared). That check covers fields, pointees, and type arguments, so a hash map's buffer counts, and it stays conservative for opaque types. A type parameter's value counts as no cell: a body generic over it reads no pointer out of it except through the crate's code, which origins follows separately. &raw const still counts as a change.
  • holders.rs points_to: a RawVec's buffer is its own allocation, never a part of another value, so the walk skips the buffer pointer and checks only what the elements hold. Before this, the elements were invisible (PhantomData<T> has no fields), so the walk now sees strictly more of what the elements point at, and the buffer can no longer cause a false refusal.
  • copy.rs fills_fresh: judges any &mut X where X holds by value a type kept as an object (!parts(X).is_empty()), not only an X that is one. It uses the same Trace::fresh judgement: if nothing points into X's parts, std's code giving them other objects cannot be observed.

Tests:

  • lengths: rewritten! and repeated! now use len(), first_mut, get_mut, and a by-value for over the array and the vector, with (u8, u8) tags, in both the generic and the concrete body. It is differential against native Rust. Disabling any one of the three fixes refuses it again.
  • Reject kept::reaimed: a fresh allocation is written whole through a pointer that a shared borrow of an UnsafeCell re-aimed at another value. It stays refused, and translates if the UnsafeCell guard is dropped.
  • Reject kept::reversed: mem::swap of a Reverse holding an object while a pointer into it is still read. It stays refused under the generalized fills_fresh. Without that read it now translates, and the output matches Rust; before this change it was refused.

Impact

  • The translator's output: more whole writes translate as fresh. No public Rust API changes.

Alternatives

  • Type the Vec buffer as T in points_to (the quest's suggestion). Skipping the buffer is exact, and refuses nothing new: a heap buffer points at no part of another value, even when T is a part type of it.
  • Special-case array::IntoIter::next as a read. Generalizing fills_fresh instead covers every std call given a &mut to a non-object holder (Reverse, Option, iterators) with the existing judgement.
  • Model a shared borrow as lent (passed only to std calls that run none of the crate's code). Std's own Cell::set would get through that, so the type-based UnsafeCell check is the sound rule.

Follow-ups

  • None. I checked one suspected gap: grid.iter_mut().flatten().map(ptr::from_mut).collect() followed by a whole write of a row. Without an UnsafeCell that program is UB in Rust, and with one the translator refuses it at UnsafeCell::get.

Review

Codex (quest review), gpt-6.1-sol, medium effort, round 1 on head 0b50526: no findings.

Head fef4937 adds only conflict-free merges of main to that head. just ci passed on it.

…] of a Copy type

A type parameter's value read out of what std's code returns holds no pointer but one
read through a cast pointer, or a function's parameter of that type. copied and Copied
copy rather than run a Copy bound's Clone. vec![x; n] runs the crate's Clone only on
its argument. A Copy type of the crate's drops none of its code. The quest keeps a zip
whose other half points at a part of the slot.

A shared borrow changes a local only through an UnsafeCell, a vector's
buffer points at no part of another value, and a std call given a
mutable reference to what holds an object by value, as an array's
iterator does, is judged fresh as one given the object is.

Walkthrough

The compiler’s borrow analysis now checks mutable paths through shared borrows and traverses vector-buffer type arguments. Fresh-memory checks now consider by-value parts that may be kept as JavaScript objects. Length fixtures use byte-sized tags and updated vector-accessor writes. New rejection fixtures cover pointers into replaced or swapped values. Related deferred-work documentation was removed.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 0e712

The change is mergeable with a bounded testing follow-up: add an empty-vector case to verify that accessor behavior against native Rust.

Nitpick Cover an empty vector in repeated!.

Cover an empty vector in repeated!.

Both rewritten! calls in repeated! receive non-empty vectors. copies always has two rows, and repeats has one to three rows. The None arm of first_mut() never runs in this fixture, so the native-versus-translated comparison does not check the empty-vector behavior. Add a call with an empty vector:

Suggested fix
 		rewritten!(repeats, $x, $out);
+		let mut empty = vec![Row($x, (0x07, 0x08)); 0];
+		rewritten!(empty, $x, $out);

Regenerate expected/lengths.ts after this change, because the added call changes the expected output.

Review comment at @ts/fixtures/lang/lengths/src/lengths.rs at line 222:
Add an empty-vector case to the `repeated!` fixture by calling `rewritten!` with
a zero-length `Vec<Row>` so the `None` arm of `first_mut()` is exercised in the
native-versus-translated comparison. Regenerate the expected `lengths.ts` output
to reflect the added call.
