perf(ffi): call the extension's Python methods with no wrapper frame - #575
Every call through the exporter's Python went through a Python def whose body called the extension (return _n.track_is_closed(self)), about 25 ns of a 104 ns call (#560).
Approach
Each function, method, static method, and property, except an async def, is now the extension's own, so CPython calls it with no Python frame between:
The glue defines each as a METH_FASTCALL | METH_KEYWORDS function (a getset for a property), in a MEMBERS table. _register sets each on its class as a method descriptor (PyDescr_NewMethod), staticmethod, or getset descriptor, all in the 3.11 stable ABI. Module functions are bound from _n.
rt::params takes arguments by position or keyword and raises the TypeError a def raises, with its message: missing, extra, duplicate, or unknown arguments.
Each ml_doc starts with a text signature, so inspect.signature and help() read the parameters, then the docstring.
The Python declares these members, annotated and documented as before, under if _typing.TYPE_CHECKING:, so type checkers and editors see the same API. mypy 2.1.0 and pyright 1.1.414 report the same errors on the api fixture's module before and after (all already on main), and infer the declared types from a caller.
An async def stays Python's, since callers may need a coroutine (asyncio.create_task). __eq__ stays too, since it checks the other operand's class first. Constants are unchanged.
The GIL release is unchanged: each body still calls through rt::call.
A new calls case in tests/api.py checks that each kind of member is the extension's, keyword arguments on a method, record method, static, function, closure, eager future, and async def, each TypeError message, signatures, and docstrings.

Impact
Public API: none intended. What changes for a caller who inspects:
type(Cls.method) is a method_descriptor (or staticmethod, getset descriptor, builtin function) rather than a Python function, so __code__ and runtime __annotations__ are gone; annotations stay in the source for type checkers.
inspect.signature(Cls.method) on the unbound method reads (self, /, x), as a method descriptor's self is positional-only. The bound signature, (x), is unchanged.
Calling an unbound method on the wrong type raises descriptor 'm' for 'Cls' objects doesn't apply to a 'int' object rather than the glue's expected Cls, got int; both are TypeError.
__str__ and __repr__ declarations gain -> str.
Alternatives
A .pyi stub beside the module instead of TYPE_CHECKING declarations: one more file each consumer must ship, for the same checker view.
Keeping each def and overwriting it at load: leaves dead bodies that would silently run if an install were missed.
A native base class per type, made with PyType_FromSpec, which the Python class subclasses: more types for the same descriptors.
METH_NOARGS for members with no parameters: a second calling convention for what is likely a few ns; not measured.
The generated Python fails mypy and pyright on main already: _n.Object as a base, the data enums' variant assignments, __hash__ = None, and _load's optional spec. Reported for a quest, not fixed here.
Review
Reviewer: quest review, Codex gpt-6.1-sol at medium effort.
Round 1, at 05ef391: one finding, fixed. rt::params built a slice from a null argument array when a C caller passes none, which PyObject_CallNoArgs does; it now copies only when there are arguments, and the calls case makes that call.
Checks run locally on 8108469: just ci (ffi lint, and the 21 fixture tests driving C, C++, Kotlin, Python, Swift, Go, and Dart), and just ffi moq on every language. Not run: just ffi android, which needs a device.
The Python binding generator now registers eligible synchronous functions, methods, and read-only properties as extension members. The runtime installs those members and parses positional and keyword arguments. Generated declarations remain available to type checkers, while Python-owned implementations remain in generated Python code. The tests cover calls, argument errors, signatures, and docstrings. Documentation now describes the direct bindings, and related proposal references were removed.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 81084
The direct bindings have one bounded robustness issue: malformed private registration calls can terminate Python. Normal generated registration is unaffected; merging is reasonable with owner awareness or a localized bounds check.

Explanation
Docstring coverage is 72.22% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 18 functions across 4 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)
Resolution
Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Check each class index in install before it reaches ty.
_register stores the classes it receives, then install indexes them with each member's class index. A call that passes fewer classes than the generated members reference makes ty panic. The panic unwinds out of an extern "C" function and aborts the Python process. Raise a ValueError for an out-of-range index instead.
