feat(ts): port std's B-tree so a key's Ord::cmp runs as std's does - #577
The runtime's BTreeMap and BTreeSet were a B+ tree of 64-key nodes searched by bisection. They called a key's own Ord::cmp on different keys, in a different order and count, and with the arguments swapped (k.cmp(key) where std calls key.cmp(k)). A key whose cmp has side effects, or a tree a collect left out of cmp's order, therefore answered differently from native Rust. On the new differential case, main's runtime differs from native on 148 of 151 inputs.
Approach
Port std's B-tree (alloc::collections::btree, identical in the pinned nightly's search, insert, remove, fix, and split) into rs/collections.ts:
Nodes of up to 11 keys (B = 6) with values in every node, children below internal nodes, and parent links.
search_tree: a linear scan by key.cmp(k) from each node's first key.
insert_recursing with std's splitpoint.
remove_kv_tracking: the predecessor swap, merge or steal (left sibling first), and fix_node_and_affected_ancestors.
Ranges by search_tree_for_bifurcation and find_leaf_edges_spanning_range.
extract_if by std's cursor, with retain as extract_if of everything, as std's is.
collect and the set operators' builds by bulk_push and fix_right_border_of_plentiful.
split_off by move_suffix into a pillar, then fix_right_border and fix_left_border.
clone node for node.
Iterators walk leaf edges as std's LeafRange does.
The set operations were already std's; they now search through the ported contains. Because keys now live in exactly one node, BTreeSet::replace no longer needs to rebound branch keys.
Tests:
tests/btree.ts and runtime.rsbtree_script: every line of the 120k-step random script now carries the count and a hash of the cmp calls, which std's must match through a logging Key. The script also gained split_off and collect. Mutating std's split point, sibling choice, or argument order fails it.
lang/collections gains btree_searches, run against native Rust. Its Probe key logs cmp, eq, ne, lt, le, and gt, and its lt and ne disagree with cmp. The case covers inserts that split, get, contains_key, remove, entry, extend, ranges from both ends, pops, clone, split_off, extract_if, retain, the set operators on sizes where std searches the larger set, replace and take, and sets and maps that collect left out of order.

The bench's own noise (A/A against translated) runs ±10-20%, so only Bun's slowdown is clearly real. The codec bundle grows from 74487 to 75612 bytes raw, and from 23728 to 24254 gzipped. Bisecting within std's nodes, for keys whose cmp nothing observes, measured no faster in Node (slower past 4096 keys), so it was dropped.
Decision
The port costs a measurable 1.3-1.6x on Bun's btree/ workloads. The browsers and Node are within noise. Options considered:
✅ Land as is: one tree, std's, for every key. Maintainer's decision on 2026-11-04. Exact cmp calls everywhere, and one implementation. rust2-ts targets browsers, where Chrome measured 0.8-1.0x and Firefox 1.0-1.3x within noise.
Keep the B+ tree for keys whose Ord is derived or std's (own_ord false), and use std's tree only for the crate's own. The lowering picks the tree at new. This recovers Bun's speed for most keys, at the cost of two B-tree implementations behind one API, about 700 more lines of runtime.
Defer: keep main's tree, and refuse a B-tree whose key has its own Ord. This costs nothing at runtime, but refuses keys moq-style code uses, such as Probe-like newtypes.
Impact
No public API change. Runtime internals only: rs.BTreeMap's fields t and h now hold std's node shape. Generated code is unchanged except the new fixture case.
A key's own Ord::cmp, and retain's and extract_if's drops, now run where std's do. retain used to rebuild the tree and drop rejected entries before a panic in f could stop it.
Alternatives
Bisection inside std's nodes, where nothing observes cmp: same shape, fewer compares, but measured slower. Dropped.
Two trees (option 2 above).
Follow-ups
With std's node layout now in place, matching std's node-by-node drop_tree order for a whole map, which the README records as declined on 2026-10-30 for cost (#272), is now cheap. Worth a quest if the maintainer wants to revisit it.
The TypeScript BTreeMap changes from a B+ tree to a node-based B-tree with up to 11 keys per node. Search, insertion, removal, traversal, collection, splitting, and entry operations now use that representation. Collection fixtures add comparison-logging keys and operations for maps and sets. Tests record comparator statistics and check B-tree structure. Documentation updates the described collection behavior and design.

Explanation
The PR description is specific and related to the changeset. It explains the problem (the runtime B+ tree called Ord::cmp on different keys, in a different order and count, with swapped arguments), the approach (porting std's B-tree into rs/collections.ts with nodes of up to 11 keys, linear search by key.cmp(k), split, merge and rebalance logic), the tests added (tests/btree.ts, runtime.rs btree_script, and the lang/collections btree_searches case), benchmark measurements, and the decision and follow-ups. The description matches the raw summary, which covers the README, the deleted quest document, the ts/runtime/rt/collections.ts rewrite, and the test and fixture additions.

This run reviewed the full diff on b730920 against main (5ad8ee2), 12 files, 8 commits, and verified it independently:
The runtime's BTreeMap/BTreeSet are now std's B-tree, ported into ts/runtime/rt/collections.ts: 11-key nodes with keys, values, children and parent links, searched linearly by key.cmp(k) from each node's first key (find/seek), split with std's splitpoint, merged and evened out with std's sibling choice (removeAt/removeLeaf/fixUp/stealLeft/stealRight/merge), ranged through std's bifurcation search with narrowing bounds (range/lower/upper), built by collect and the set operators through std's bulk_push (bulk/pillar, fix_right_border_of_plentiful), split_off through std's corner cut into a pillar and its border fixes (fixBorder), cloned node for node in std's key-then-value order, and iterated by leaf edges climbed through the parent chain.
retain is now std's extract_if of everything instead of a whole-tree rebuild, so rejected entries drop as f rejects them and a panic in f stops the traversal; this also removes the branch-key rebinding (rebound) the B+ tree needed.
Tests: tests/btree.ts's 120k-step random script now records a count and hash of cmp calls per line (runtime.rs's btree_script compares against std's BTreeMap<Key> running the same script, Key logging alike), and the lang/collections fixture gains btree_searches, a differential case with a Probe whose cmp, eq, lt, and ne disagree, covering inserts that split, removes that merge and steal, ranges, split_off, extract_if, retain, the set operators, and collects that leave the tree out of cmp's order.
Verification in this run:
cargo test --test runtime btree_script and cargo test --test fixtures lang::collections both pass here on the PR head; the second is the native-vs-translated differential on the new case.
A specialist audit compared the ported removal, rebalancing, bulk-build, and range-search code against std's sources (node.rs, remove.rs, fix.rs, append.rs, search.rs, navigate.rs): the split point, sibling choice, steal counts, index tracking through merges, the fixUp termination and popRoot, the bulk climb and border fixes, the bound narrowing and bifurcation, and the edge walkers all match std, as does cmp(key, k) being the search key's call in every place std calls find_key_index.
The lookup-results-through-idx module global's contract ("the caller reads before anything else runs") holds on every write-then-read path: no comparison, clone, drop, or f callback runs in between.
GitHub's checks had not started at review time (only queue jobs showing SKIPPED); the body reports just ci and just ts moq green on the merged head. CodeRabbit review will run via the merge queue as usual.

Reviewed changes
This run reviewed the delta since the prior pullfrog review (b730920, review), 5 commits:
A conflict-free merge of origin/main (9d28d1d8, 8d99abf8), which brings #594's Go work, #597's docs, and mechanically reshapes this PR's own files: #578's rt to rs rename applied by its script moves the runtime to ts/runtime/rs/collections.ts and renames the rt. namespace (and the regenerated snapshots, main's Key<K>/Slice typing on btreeRangeKeys, and mangled m3 quest index), and #576's rs.Slice shows up in the range-key bounds. The B-tree port's logic itself is untouched by the delta.
The quest-tree link fix in quest/m2/ts-model/rangemap.md so it no longer points at the finished quest, and an empty resync commit (5d352a32).
Verification on the merged head, since the rename touched the same runtime file the port lives in:
cargo test --test runtime btree_script and cargo test --test fixtures lang::collections both pass here on 8d99abf, so the script-renamed runtime still differential-matches std's B-tree, and the regenerated snapshot still matches the fresh translation.
No dangling rt. references remain in the renamed runtime file, and the B-tree section's code carried over unchanged apart from the mechanical rename.
