fix(ts): translate a 2015 or 2018 crate's panic! - #610
rust2-ts now translates panic! in a 2015 or 2018 edition crate, which expands to std::rt::begin_panic. Until now that call was refused: six unsupported call to std::rt::begin_panic errors on the new fixture, and arrayvec's ArrayString hit the same refusal.
The cause: library::key builds a function's key from the module that defines it. std defines begin_panic in std::panicking and only re-exports it from rt, so the mapping keyed ("rt", "begin_panic") never matched. Both of its entries (the mapping itself and its discards entry) are now keyed ("panicking", "begin_panic"). The two existing ("panicking", ...) keys (panic_fmt, panic, set_hook) are different functions, so the new key collides with none of them.
A dependency's columns
Running the 2018 panics under the recording hook (from CodeRabbit's nitpick) showed every caller location in the dependency off by its tabs: column 8 where native Rust says 14. rustc counts a tab as 4 columns, which it reads from the file's source, and a dependency's file is imported from its metadata without the source, so lookup_char_pos fell back to counting characters. caller::location now loads the file's source first (ensure_source_file_source_present). A file of the crate being translated, and a space-indented dependency such as bytes, were already right; no other snapshot changed.
Test
ts/fixtures/lang/panics/edition2018 is a 2018-edition path crate. The panics fixture runs it as the case edition2018::panicked, against native Rust, both without and with a hook. Its hook build also runs it as hooked::edition2018_panicked, which sets the recording hook on the paths that panic, so the differential compares each panic's payload type, text, and location too; the hook records a u8 payload's value. It covers every shape of a 2018 panic!:
panic!()
a literal
a String payload
a non-literal &str
a u8 payload (Box<dyn Any>)
a format string with arguments (rt::panic_fmt, which already worked)
a conditional panic beside a normal return
just ci passes locally.
Choices made without asking
The 2018 code lives in a path dependency of the existing panics fixture, not in a new lang fixture. That reuses the fixture's harness and its hook build, so both output shapes are covered with no new test entry.
hooked::edition2018_panicked sets the hook only on the paths that panic: the harness resets the hook only after a panic, so a hook set on a case that returns would stay installed into the next.
Public API
The translator's output only: a 2015 or 2018 panic! now translates instead of being refused, and a #[track_caller] location in a tab-indented dependency now has native Rust's column. No runtime or config change.

The round above reviewed the hand-resolved merge of origin/main through moq-dev/rust2#604: the only conflict was the generated ts/fixtures/lang/panics/hook/expected/hooked.ts, regenerated with UPDATE_EXPECT=1 (line shifts plus main's new sited cases). origin/main was then merged again with no conflicts, bringing in moq-dev/rust2#595, giving head fb42dd6; a conflict-free merge from the base needs no new review. quest gate just ci passed on both heads.
…nicking::begin_panic
library::key names a function by its defining module, and std defines
begin_panic in std::panicking, re-exporting it from rt, so the mapping keyed
by ("rt", "begin_panic") never matched. A 2018-edition crate beside the
panics fixture proves each shape of its panic! against native Rust.

fix(ts): translate a 2015 or 2018 crate's panic!
Nov 6, 2026
No actionable defects found. Both the panic mapping and ownership/discard entry now use the defining-module key returned by library::key. The new 2018 path dependency is registered in the existing differential harness, whose normal and hook-feature builds cover the added case; the snapshots retain string ownership, non-string payload handling, and call-site locations. No changes requested.
Verification limits: GitHub-only static review of all 12 changed files and relevant lowering/test code. I did not run the translator, differential tests, or just ci; the PR's reported local pass was not independently reproduced. GitHub's Queue runs for this head were skipped.
The panic lowering rule now maps panicking::begin_panic. The panic fixtures add a Rust 2018 crate with cases for different panic payloads and a conditional append path. The Rust and expected TypeScript case lists include the new fixture. The README requirement entry and the related quest documentation were removed.
Merge Risk: Low · up to ad1b5
The panic mapping change is mergeable with a bounded testing follow-up: exercise the new 2018 panic cases with a recording hook to verify payload types and values.

Exercise 2018 panic payloads with a recording hook.
The hook variant runs edition2018::panicked without the recording hook. The differential test can miss hook-specific payload type and u8 value regressions, even though it compares panic messages and generated snapshots.
Add a hook-enabled wrapper and record the u8 payload value as well as string payload types. Keep the existing hook unchanged when the case returns normally.

… 2018 panics
The panics fixture now runs its 2018-edition dependency's panics under the recording
hook too (`hooked::edition2018_panicked`), and the hook records a `u8` payload's value.
That showed every location in the dependency off: rustc counts a tab as 4 columns, which
it reads from the file's source, and a dependency's file is imported without it, so its
column fell back to counting characters. `caller::location` now loads the source first.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Done in d286202: the hook build now runs hooked::edition2018_panicked, which sets the recording hook on the panicking paths only (the harness resets the hook only after a panic), and record names a u8 payload's value.
That turned up a real bug: every location in the 2018 dependency had column 8 where native Rust says 14. rustc counts a tab as 4 columns, reading the file's source to do it, and a dependency's file comes in from metadata without its source, so the column fell back to counting characters. caller::location now loads the source first. Snapshots are regenerated, and the differential against native Rust passes, as does just ci.

No actionable defects found. Loading the dependency's source before computing the display column addresses the tab offsets, and rustc validates the source content when loading it. The new wrapper records 2018 panic payloads, including the u8 value, while leaving the hook unchanged on the normal-return path. This also addresses CodeRabbit's earlier recording-hook coverage suggestion. No code changes requested from this pass.
