feat(scene)!: slide, wipe, and move transitions - #33
Advances quest/m0/animation.md: its first slice, transitions. Keyframes and the stinger stay in the quest, rewritten to what remains.
Problem
A scene change could only cut or fade. Slide, wipe, and move (OBS's most-installed plugin is Move Transition) are standard in a switcher.
Approach
moq_scene::Transition becomes a tagged enum: fade, slide, wipe, move, each with a duration, and slide and wipe with a direction (left, right, up, down). It changes through Draft::set_transition, so it undoes like any edit.
The compositor draws every kind into the program on the clock render is ticked with, so the encoder, a recording, and a replay of the program see the same frames. A fade runs at an even pace, as before. The rest ease in and out (cubic).
Fade: unchanged: the incoming scene drawn whole, then faded over the outgoing one.
Wipe: the incoming scene drawn whole, then shown only within the region a slide would have brought it into.
Slide: both scenes drawn whole (one more canvas-sized texture, outgoing), placed at offsets rounded to whole pixels, so they stay sharp and meet without a seam.
Move: no textures. Each visible incoming item pairs with the first unpaired visible outgoing item that shows the same source.
Paired items interpolate their rect and crop, and mix their filter settings (Filter::toward) when the filters pair up by kind, in order. A pair whose blend mode or filter kinds differ changes look halfway.
Unpaired items fade out or in.
Items stack as the outgoing scene has them until halfway, then as the incoming scene does. Each unpaired item sits just over the paired item it was over, so the first frame is the outgoing scene and the last is the incoming one.
An item already in its final pose reuses the preview's prepared draw.
Effects::fade becomes Effects::place, which draws a canvas-sized picture over any rect, clipped to another, at an opacity.
The program panel gets Cut and Transition buttons, a kind picker, a direction picker for slide and wipe, and the duration.
Frame time
At 1920x1080 on an Apple M4 (Metal, release), render plus a GPU wait over 300 frames. The scenes hold a full-canvas fill, a picture-in-picture with a drop shadow, and, in the incoming scene, one more item:
Program

1.63 ms
slide
1.42 ms
1.54 ms
wipe
1.37 ms
1.49 ms
move
1.80 ms
2.26 ms
GPU passes per frame during a transition, beyond the steady preview and program:
Fade and wipe: one canvas-sized pass for the incoming scene.
Slide: two canvas-sized passes. Each scene's placement covers only its part of the canvas.
Move: no extra pass. Moving items are filtered again rather than shared with the preview, which is why its drop shadow costs more.
Encoder load doesn't change, apart from the extra motion a transition puts in front of it. That motion lasts only as long as the transition.
Impact
Breaking, scene file:[transition] fade = "300ms" becomes kind = "fade" with duration = "300ms". Migrate by renaming fade to duration and adding kind = "fade". Old files fail to load, naming the unknown field. The format version stays 1, since nothing has been released.
Program panel: Fade becomes Transition, with a kind, a direction (slide and wipe), and a duration beside it.
Public API (moq-scene, unpublished): Transition is an enum with duration() and duration_mut(), plus the new Direction. Compositor::fade(duration, now) becomes transition(transition, now), and fading() becomes transitioning(). No wire impact.
Alternatives
Configurable easing per transition: dropped. A fixed curve per kind (even for a fade, cubic in and out for motion) keeps the scene file and panel smaller. Easing comes back with keyframes, where it is needed.
One struct of shared fields with a kind: serde's flatten does not work with deny_unknown_fields. A tagged enum keeps the file flat and rejects a direction on a fade.
Slide without the outgoing texture, by shifting each outgoing item's rect: the incoming scene's blend modes would then mix with whatever outgoing items reach past the canvas edge. Reusing the incoming texture twice per frame would save the memory, at the cost of a pass that resumes without clearing. The texture is 8 MiB at 1080p.
Choices made without asking
Direction means which way things move: a left slide pushes both scenes left, and a left wipe's edge sweeps leftward, uncovering the incoming scene from the right.
A move pairs items by source name, back to front, and ignores hidden items. A look that cannot be mixed, or a change in stacking, switches at the halfway point rather than cross-fading. Two source-over draws would let the background show through.
The transition picker remembers the last slide or wipe direction for the session.
The stinger is not in this PR. No source plays a media file, and a stinger has to start its clip when the transition starts, or its cut point lands at random. The quest now records that it waits on a media-file source.
Follow-ups
/quest-plan a media-file source that plays from the start on demand. The stinger waits on it, and m0's goal names media among the sources.
/quest-plan splitting the stinger out of quest/m0/animation.md, once that source quest exists.
The keyframe questions recorded in the quest (what starts them, how a keyframed item edits in the preview) are for the maintainer before that slice starts.
GitHub Check failed once on 234cfe6 because ffmpeg.org refused the runner while the libav build was fetching ffmpeg (infra, moq#7828). The re-run passed.
cargo nextest run -p moq-scene --lib --run-ignored only -E 'test(/^compositor::tests::/)' on Metal: 25 passed, including a_move_glides_an_overlay, the new a_slide_pushes_and_a_wipe_uncovers, a_move_glides_what_both_scenes_place, and a_move_restacks_halfway_and_mixes_filters (nightly runs them on lavapipe through just render-sw).
Review
Codex gpt-6.1-sol, medium effort, via quest review --base origin/main. Reviewed head: 6de4992.
Round 1 (9fa897f): outgoing-only items were drawn under every incoming item. Fixed in 234cfe6.
Reordered paired items (OpenAI review, CodeRabbit): fixed in 5fd1542 with the halfway restack.
Paired items took the incoming look from frame one (CodeRabbit): fixed, settings now mix.
The direction picker forgot its choice (pullfrog): fixed.
The old history shape fails to parse (CodeRabbit): refuted. It fails loudly, naming the file (autosave.rs:515-520), and REVIEW.md rules out shims for unreleased formats.
Round 3 (5fd1542): the cross-fade let the background show through at p(1-p). Fixed in 0ccaa0a: settings mix, or the look switches halfway.
Online review (CodeRabbit, collection.rs:658): mixing settings at opposite extremes overflowed to infinity. Fixed in 787113c: collection::mix works in f64, and a test covers -f32::MAX to f32::MAX.
Round 5 (787113c, after main was merged in at 5d32bc5): no findings.
The program panel picks a fade, slide, wipe, or move, drawn by the
compositor on the program clock. The scene file's [transition] becomes
a tagged kind with a duration and, for slide and wipe, a direction.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
P2: Preserve the outgoing stack when paired items change order (rs/moq-scene/src/compositor.rs:580–595). Paired items are drawn in incoming order even at progress zero. For outgoing [red, blue] and incoming [blue, red], both full-canvas items pair at the same poses, so the first Move frame immediately changes from blue to red and stays red throughout. The unpaired-item fix does not cover this case. Preserve the outgoing composition when paired order conflicts with the incoming stack, for example by falling back to a scene fade, and test overlapping reordered pairs.
Verification: GitHub-only source review; no GPU tests or runtime reproduction. quest context could not be run under the GitHub-only constraint.
The scene model now supports Fade, Slide, Wipe, and Move transitions, with duration and direction settings. The compositor renders these transitions and reports their status. Studio controls let users select and apply transitions. Documentation and scene-file examples describe the new options, while animation planning text separates compositor transitions from keyframed animation.

Add a render at transition start and a reordered Move case.
The Move test renders only at 500 ms and at completion. It never checks the first frame. Its fixture also has one matched item, so it cannot detect a change in how matched items are stacked. Add a render at start with a first-frame assertion. Add a fixture with two overlapping matched items that reverse order between scenes.

ℹ️ No new substantive findings. The diff's GPU math checks out; the only new note is a non-blocking UI nit inline.
I reviewed the full diff at 234cfe6 and traced the new rendering paths. Effects::place is correct: with input.area = at, uv = valid = UNIT, and bounds = at ∩ within ∩ canvas, the shader samples exactly the picture fraction under bounds; each slide/wipe direction's at and within cover complementary integer-rounded halves with no seam, and wholly off-canvas placements draw nothing. The cubic ease, whole-pixel offset, and Move pairing/grouping (hidden items, duplicate sources, back-to-front order) are sound apart from the cases already reported. deny_unknown_fields on the tagged enum is present, so the scene-file rejection claim holds.
Still open from the earlier reviews (not duplicated here):
Reordered paired stacks show the incoming order on a Move's first frame — OpenAI review; CodeRabbit at compositor.rs:550.
Paired Move items take the incoming item's filters/blend from frame one, so they pop if the outgoing item's differ — CodeRabbit at compositor.rs:589-591.
Saved history holding the old flat [transition] fade = ... shape won't parse under the tagged enum — CodeRabbit at collection.rs:337-338.
Items stack as the outgoing scene has them until halfway, then as the
incoming one does, and a paired item whose filters or blend mode differ
cross-fades between its two looks. The transition picker remembers the
last slide or wipe direction.

Two source-over draws at 1 - p and p let the background show through.
Filters that pair up by kind now mix their settings; a look that cannot

Re the OpenAI review's P2 (reordered paired items) and CodeRabbit's nitpick about testing the first frame and a reordered pair: both are fixed in 5fd1542, and the filter handling was reworked in 0ccaa0a.
A move stacks items as the outgoing scene does until halfway, then as the incoming scene does. Outgoing [red, blue] to incoming [blue, red] therefore shows blue until halfway and red after, and the first frame matches the cut.
a_move_restacks_halfway_and_mixes_filters renders at start, past halfway, and at the end, with two overlapping paired items that swap order.
No new actionable findings in the changes since my previous review at 234cfe6, accounting for the merged base changes.
The prior P2 stacking finding is addressed: rs/moq-scene/src/compositor.rs:610–615 retains outgoing order until halfway, and a_move_restacks_halfway_and_mixes_filters checks the first frame, restacking, and filter interpolation. The paired-item path at lines 636–652 draws each pair once, mixing compatible settings or using the documented halfway look switch, avoiding the two-draw background leak. I also checked the direction picker persistence.
Overall direction: the fixes fit the existing compositor and the documented transition behavior; no further change requested from this review.
Verification: GitHub-only static source review, including related rendering code and tests. I did not run builds, GPU tests, UI checks, or performance measurements. quest context could not be run under the GitHub-only constraint.

Reviewed changes
Reviewed the delta from the prior Pullfrog review at 234cfe6 through 0ccaa0a: the Move draw-order and look rewrite, the remembered slide/wipe direction, and the matching docs and test.
Restacked Move draw order — stack builds the slot list from the outgoing order before halfway and from the incoming order after, so reordered paired items start and end on the right frame instead of popping on the first one.
Mixed filter settings — paired items lerp their filters' settings with Filter::toward, pairing them by kind in order, rather than showing the incoming look from frame one; a look that cannot be mixed switches at the halfway point where the stacking does.
Remembered transition direction — Panels::direction keeps the last slide or wipe direction across Fade and Move, which fixes the earlier direction-reset nit.
Coverage and docs — the new a_move_restacks_halfway_and_mixes_filters test checks the first frame, the halfway restack, and the invert mix, and the README Move row now describes the behavior.
The slot layout draws each visible item exactly once (unpaired items included), and the mixed filters stay within the settings Filter::validate accepts. The prior direction thread is resolved.

Keep fractional milliseconds in the transition duration control.
A scene file can set a sub-millisecond transition, such as duration = "500us". The Program control then shows 0 ms because as_millis() truncates. A drag edit writes Duration::from_millis(millis), which drops the fraction. Show fractional milliseconds. Change the stored duration only when the user edits this control.

Reviewed changes
Reviewed the delta from the prior Pullfrog review at 0ccaa0a through 787113c: the interpolation overflow fix and the two origin/main merges.
Overflow-safe interpolation — collection::mix now computes the lerp as an f64 weighted sum (from * (1 - p) + to * p), and both Filter::toward and compositor Pose::toward call it, so opposite-extreme finite settings no longer overflow to inf/NaN.
Coverage — filters_mix_within_their_settings exercises -f32::MAX..f32::MAX for DropShadow and HueRotate, exact f32::MAX endpoints, and refuses a cross-kind mix.
Merges — 5b5e402 and 5d32bc5 only bring origin/main forward; the range-diff shows nothing else changed in the PR.
The shared mix is the only lerp left for filters and poses, and it stays within the endpoints' range for progress in [0, 1], so Filter::validate's guarantees hold under mixing.
Overlays (#34) follow the transition state: the scenes they paint for
include the one a transition leaves, and a move glides an overlay item
like any other.

Reviewed changes
Reviewed the delta from the prior Pullfrog review at 787113c through 6de4992: a merge of origin/main (501fbb5, #34 overlays and #29 browser profile/reload) into the transition branch, plus the hand resolution that combines overlays with transitions.
Overlays on the transition clock — update now takes now and render runs update then paint, so overlay CSS advances on the same program clock the transition is drawn from.
Leaving scene stays painted — shown, on_air, and scenes follow switch.from instead of the old fade field, so an overlay in the outgoing scene keeps painting while a fade, slide, or wipe reveals it out.
Overlay move coverage — a_move_glides_an_overlay checks an overlay source gliding between scenes and landing under the incoming layout.
The resolution is consistent: no stale fade field remains, the four transition render paths are unchanged from the reviewed 787113c code, and collection::mix still uses the f64 weighted sum.
Index outgoing items by source to avoid a full scan for each incoming item.
moving scans every outgoing item for each visible incoming item. The cost grows with the product of the two visible item counts, and it recurs on every Move transition frame. The pairing does not depend on progress, and it is not kept between renders. Grouping the visible outgoing indices by source gives the same first-unpaired pairing in one pass.

visible outgoing indices. Consume indices in their original order and preserve
the left and entered assignments, so each incoming item pairs with the first
still-unpaired outgoing item of the same source.

Approach
moq_scene::Transitionbecomes a tagged enum:fade, slide, wipe, move, each with aduration, andslideandwipewith adirection(left, right,up,down). It changes throughDraft::set_transition, so it undoes like any edit.renderis ticked with, so the encoder, a recording, and a replay of the program see the same frames. A fade runs at an even pace, as before. The rest ease in and out (cubic).outgoing), placed at offsets rounded to whole pixels, so they stay sharp and meet without a seam.Filter::toward) when the filters pair up by kind, in order. A pair whose blend mode or filter kinds differ changes look halfway.Effects::fadebecomesEffects::place, which draws a canvas-sized picture over any rect, clipped to another, at an opacity.Frame time
At 1920x1080 on an Apple M4 (Metal, release),
renderplus a GPU wait over 300 frames. The scenes hold a full-canvas fill, a picture-in-picture with a drop shadow, and, in the incoming scene, one more item:GPU passes per frame during a transition, beyond the steady preview and program:
Encoder load doesn't change, apart from the extra motion a transition puts in front of it. That motion lasts only as long as the transition.
Impact
[transition] fade = "300ms"becomeskind = "fade"withduration = "300ms". Migrate by renamingfadetodurationand addingkind = "fade". Old files fail to load, naming the unknown field. The format version stays 1, since nothing has been released.Transitionis an enum withduration()andduration_mut(), plus the newDirection.Compositor::fade(duration, now)becomestransition(transition, now), andfading()becomestransitioning(). No wire impact.Alternatives
kind: serde'sflattendoes not work withdeny_unknown_fields. A tagged enum keeps the file flat and rejects adirectionon a fade.outgoingtexture, by shifting each outgoing item's rect: the incoming scene's blend modes would then mix with whatever outgoing items reach past the canvas edge. Reusing theincomingtexture twice per frame would save the memory, at the cost of a pass that resumes without clearing. The texture is 8 MiB at 1080p.Choices made without asking
Follow-ups
/quest-plana media-file source that plays from the start on demand. The stinger waits on it, and m0's goal names media among the sources./quest-plansplitting the stinger out ofquest/m0/animation.md, once that source quest exists.Validation
