feat(studio): guests see the program and hear a mix-minus - #37
Guests in the room publish their camera and screen but see and hear nothing of the show, so they cannot follow it. The maintainer decided (2026-11-02, on moq-dev/studio#10) that guests get the program with a mix-minus, video and audio together, published into the room under names the room's token scope allows and without the studio's own credentials, with the per-guest cost bounded by design.
Two audible copies of one guest's camera. ✅ Land as is: the feed takes out the copy the program plays audibly. A moq-audio follow-up for a mix-minus without several sources is saved upstream.
Approach
Video, once for everyone: the studio's session in the room (the one that already publishes renewals, signed only by the room key) serves the program broadcast itself at .program, through an origin::Requests route. Nothing is re-encoded: guests read the program's own tracks.
Audio, per guest: each renewed guest gets a broadcast at .return/<name>/<generation>. Its catalog lists the program's video renditions by reference (broadcast: "../../.program"), mirrored live from the program catalog and on its clock, and an audio track of its own: moq-audio's bus::Mix::minus of the mix on program (Sources::mix), taking out the strip of the source playing the guest's camera, Opus at 64 kbps.
Grants: a guest token now subscribes to .renew/<name>/<gen>, .return/<name>/<gen>, and .program, still nothing of another guest. The session token publishes .renew/**, .return/**, and .program/**.
Bounded by design: a feed exists exactly while its guest is renewed (camera announced, not removed), so the set is the guests the studio signed for and keeps in the room. Each costs one subtraction per 10 ms block and one Opus encode. Removing a guest from scenes ends their feed with their renewals.
Following changes:mix::Pick now reads a mix or a mix-minus, so each feed switches on a block boundary like the program audio and the monitor. The engine re-picks every feed when it syncs the mixes, and marks the state stale when who is renewed changes (Room::changed is now a watch, so both the renewals and the engine wake).
Join page: plays the feed with @moq/watch's Player above the guest's own preview, and asks them to wear headphones.
Impact
Join page: shows and plays the show without the guest's own voice.
Guest tokens (links and renewals) may also read their own .return/<name>/<generation> and the room's .program.
The studio's session in the room uploads the size a guest watches a second time, a guest watching the half size makes it encode as any viewer does, and each guest in the room costs one 64 kbps Opus encode.
No flag, panel, or scene file change. Public API: none (binary crate). Wire: two new paths in the room, .program and .return/<name>/<generation>.
Choices made without asking
Program served whole at .program rather than a video-only copy: moq-net cannot serve one track in two broadcasts, and forwarding groups by hand would be a relay in the app. Since moq-dev/studio#21, that broadcast holds only the program's own tracks; a guest may also read the program audio (with their own voice).
One strip is taken out.Mix::minus excludes one strip, so the feed takes out the copy of the guest's camera the program plays (falling back to the first). A guest sharing a tab with sound hears it back in their feed, and two audible copies of one camera leave one in (decision 2).
64 kbps for return audio, half the program's, since it is for following along and every guest costs one.
No demand gating of the per-guest encode: the join page always plays the feed while the guest is in the room, which is the only time the feed exists.
Alternatives
One shared feed broadcast with a track per guest: moq-auth scopes broadcasts, not tracks, so any guest could read every mix-minus.
Granting guests the program's own path: guest tokens are rooted at the room, and the room key must stay inside it.
Re-encoding the program per guest: an encoder session per guest, which consumer GPUs cap at a few.
A feed of the half size only: the feed mirrors both program sizes, so a guest's player picks by its own downlink.
Validation
just ci passes on ef7e6ef (199 Rust tests, JS checks, tests, and the join page build).
engine::tests::the_program_reaches_a_relay (GPU, ignored in CI; run here with --features openh264 --run-ignored only) passes, now asserting a guest's feed lists both program sizes by reference to .program, and .program's catalog lists the same sizes and no source.
New tests: feed::tests::each_guest_hears_the_program_without_themselves (each guest's mix-minus carries only the other guest, the catalog references .program, a removed guest's feed ends; mocked clock) and feed::tests::a_guest_reads_only_their_own_feed_through_a_relay (a relay verifying tokens lets alice read her feed and the program it names, and refuses bob's feed while bob reads it). The guest relay test is now on a shared Relay fixture.
Follow-ups
moq-audio: a mix-minus without several strips, so a guest's screen-share sound and any second copy of their camera leave their feed too.

Walkthrough
The studio now publishes a shared program route and generation-specific return feeds for renewed guests. Guest tokens can subscribe to the program and their own return feed. The studio selects a mix-minus for each guest and encodes return audio. The join page plays the guest’s feed. Room changes trigger engine updates, and documentation and tests describe or cover the new feed behavior.
Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review b6a3e
A return-feed error can leave a guest without the returned show until their renewal generation changes or they leave and rejoin. Restore feed recovery before merging unless this limitation is explicitly accepted.

Explanation
The description states the PR finishes the guest-return quest and describes the approach. It covers the guest return feed, the program served at .program, per-guest .return/<name>/<generation> feeds with a mix-minus audio track, grant changes for guest tokens, the join-page player with headphones guidance, and the validation performed. This matches the changeset in the README, join page, feed module, guests, engine, and mix changes, so the description is related and on-topic.

[P2] Pass the guest connection's probe to Player (js/join/src/index.ts:74–78). With both renditions decodable, a downlink that supports half size but not full size still selects full size indefinitely: without a probe, the pinned Video.Source has no receive-rate estimate and uses largest-picture ranking. Pass probe: connection.probe, as the upstream watch element does, and cover selection with a low receive estimate.
[P2] Skip zero-gain copies when selecting the subtraction strip (rs/moq-studio/src/feed.rs:111–116). Put two copies of a guest's camera in the collection, lower the first copy's fader fully and leave the second audible. The fader sets gain to zero without muting, but Sources::plays checks only mute and routing. This selects and subtracts the silent strip, leaving the guest's only audible microphone copy in their return. Exclude zero-gain strips from this selection and extend the muted-first test with the fader-at-zero case. This is separate from the accepted two-audible-copy limitation.
Overall direction: the shared program route and per-guest audio fit the existing primitives; address these playback and strip-selection gaps. The recorded duplicate-camera/screen-audio scope is otherwise unchanged.
Verification limits: GitHub-only static review of the changed source, tests and docs, with independent Rust/frontend passes and pinned upstream API tracing. No quest context execution, tests, GPU run or browser playback; the author's reported validation was not reproduced.

Reviewed changes
I reviewed the return-feed feature end to end: the new Feeds/Feed publishers, the room origin/session wiring, mix-minus selection, the join page's player and feed path, and the accompanying docs and tests.
Shared program route — The studio's session serves the program at .program through origin.requests, rejecting anything beneath it.
Per-guest return feeds — Each renewed guest gets .return/<identity>/<generation>, publishing program video by reference and a mix-minus audio encode.
Mix-minus selection — sync follows the program mix, subtracts the copy the program plays, and re-picks when the room changes.
Join playback — The join page opens a Watch.Player on its return feed and renders it to a show canvas.
Lifecycle and tests — Feeds start before the engine, stop on removal or room change, and engine/relay tests cover the served catalog and GPU program frames.

Reviewed changes
Reviewed the delta since the prior pullfrog review at 60d354d: the two fixes in e9a00b1 and the origin/main merge in 365894c.
Feed player adapts to the guest's link — the join page's Watch.Player now passes probe: connection.probe, so a guest whose downlink cannot carry the full size drops to the half rendition instead of staying pinned to the largest picture.
Mix-minus skips inaudible copies — strip selection now requires gain() > 0.0 in addition to Sources::plays, so a fader-at-zero copy of the guest's camera is no longer subtracted while an audible copy remains in their return.
Regression test covers the fader-at-zero case — each_guest_hears_the_program_without_themselves adds an "Alice silent" gain-0 copy listed first, which makes the assertion fail without the new check.
js/join/src/index.ts:74–80 now supplies the connection's probe to the guest player. Tracing the pinned Player → Video.Source confirms receive estimates reach rendition selection.
rs/moq-studio/src/feed.rs:108–121 now skips zero-gain camera copies as well as muted/unrouted ones. Source gains are synchronized before feed selection, and the expanded mix-minus regression puts both quiet copies before the audible one.
No new actionable findings in this follow-up. The main-branch merge adds independent quest-plan changes; the existing decisions about multiple audible copies and screen-share audio remain unchanged. Overall direction: the targeted fixes address the two reported failures without adding another mechanism.
Verification: GitHub-only source review of the changed behavior, callers, pinned upstream APIs, and regression test. I did not run tests, browser/GPU playback, or quest context.

Reviewed changes
Reviewed the delta since the prior pullfrog review at 365894c: the origin/main merge in b6a3ea5, whose only hand-resolved conflict is in engine.rs after #41's recording-mix feature.
Recording mix survives the merge — pick_mixes still sets recorded_audio from Mixes::recorded(), and the audio-record encoder follows recorded_audio with a close() on stop, exactly as #41 introduced.
Return feeds still follow the program mix — feeds.sync remains in pick_mixes, and feed.rs derives the mix-minus from collection.mixes.program, so the new separate recording mix never changes what guests hear.
Quest completion preserved — the merge keeps quest/m0/guest-return.md and its README entry deleted (done earlier in 5fcef3e), and the tree has no conflict markers. Net PR diff is 14 files, 888/-148 against main (8fdb2b2).

returned builds its own Feeds and calls sync directly. The engine it tests is launched with room: None, so the feed setup in Engine::start and the feed sync in pick_mixes never run. Removing either one leaves the test passing. Launch an engine with a connected Room and check the feed it creates, without calling Feeds::new or Feeds::sync.

Read the return feed's audio track in the feed tests.
The feed tests never read frames from a return feed's audio track. each_guest_hears_the_program_without_themselves checks the mix-minus in Feed.pick, and the relay test checks only the catalog and video. If encode stopped calling audio.write, both tests would still pass. Subscribe to the feed's audio track, decode it, and assert non-silent samples with timestamps that match the program.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Feeds::open spawns return encoders on its current runtime. In production, Engine::pick_mixes calls it from the program clock's single-threaded runtime, so synchronous Opus encoding competes directly with rendering rather than running on the relay runtime.
Return-audio encoding delays program frames and produces video stutter or dropped frames.
This can occur when: Several guests are renewed, or a delayed return encoder processes multiple buffered audio blocks before yielding.

Playback starts immediately with the invitation token, but existing pre-feature tokens lack return-feed and program permissions. The player must recover from an initial authorization rejection after Renew.follow installs an upgraded token.
The guest can publish and receive a fresh token, yet return playback may remain failed until leaving and rejoining.
This can occur when: A guest opens an unexpired invitation minted by the previous renewal-capable studio version against the upgraded studio and join page.

Reviewed changes
Reviewed the delta since the prior pullfrog review at b6a3ea5: the runtime/lifecycle fix in d98eed9 and the origin/main merge in ef7e6ef (main at 88423f8, #38).
Return feeds moved off the program thread — Feeds captures Handle::current() in new and spawns each feed's task on that handle, so Opus encoding and program-catalog mirroring no longer share the program thread's single-threaded runtime.
Stopped feeds reopened — sync now keeps a feed only while it is still renewed and its task has not finished; a finished feed is dropped and reopened for a still-renewed guest in the same pass, instead of staying silent forever.
Regression test syncs from a plain thread — each_guest_hears_the_program_without_themselves calls sync from a std::thread, which would panic under the old ambient tokio::spawn, so a revert to that pattern fails the test.
README access sentence includes the program — the invite paragraph now says guests read their renewals, their return feed, and the program.
main merge is clean — ef7e6ef brings #38's broadcast-source timestamp playout without touching feed.rs's mix/strip path, and the two remaining pullfrog threads from review 5775304562 are already resolved.
I verified the runtime assumptions: Feeds::new is only reached from Engine::start under the main multi-threaded runtime, the program thread's clocked runtime never owns these tasks, and a finished task has already dropped its Publication before the reopen targets the same path.
