Finishes quest/m0/scenes/scene-source.md of the composable scenes epic.

Summary

A new source kind, scene, draws another scene as one picture that an item places, scales, crops, filters, and blends like any other, and program draws whatever the program output shows, a transition under way included, on the same frame.

  • Model (collection.rs): Source::Scene { scene } and Source::Program, with Collection::nested, drawn (visible items through nested scenes, each scene once), and draws_program. Validation refuses a scene source naming no scene, a scene drawing itself directly or through others (shown or hidden, through clones too), the main canvas's top layer showing the program, and the top layer showing a scene with keyframes anywhere it reaches (the top layer never goes on to start them). Validation and the compositor walk nested scenes with their own stack, not the call stack. A mask cannot read a scene.
  • Edits (edit.rs): renaming a scene renames what its scene sources draw; removing one removes its scene sources and the items showing them, as removing a source does; moving one touches nothing. All undo whole. A draft follows each scene by place, as Collection::renames does, and each scene source by the scene it draws, so chained renames or a name reused within one draft reach only that scene's own sources.
  • Compositor: each render walks what preview, program (with the scene a transition leaves), and every top layer draw, and draws each nested scene once, at the main canvas's size, into a pooled texture that is transparent where it draws nothing, only while something drawn shows it. Its keyframes play from when the scene showing it went on, so when preview and program show it at different moments it is drawn once per moment, and once for both when it has settled. Nested scenes not showing the program draw first, then the program, then those showing it, then preview and further canvases, so a program source samples the program texture itself with no extra composite.
  • Program into itself: Compositor::cut and transition now take the collection and return Result, refusing a preview scene that draws the program. The studio refuses an edit that leaves the scene on air drawing it (keep_on_air), and at launch puts the first scene that does not draw it on program.
  • Frames (effect.rs): a frame used to run every raster pass before every target, so a blur on a nested scene read last frame's texture. Each target's rasters now run just before it.
  • Blend modes (effect.wgsl): blending assumed an opaque backdrop; it now composites over a transparent one as the Compositing and Blending spec does. Over an opaque canvas the result is unchanged.
  • Move: a scene source paired across a move shows its nested scene at the outgoing scene's moment until halfway, then at the incoming one, as a look that cannot be mixed does.
  • Studio: placed() (media restarts, Health, source tracks on program) and overlay painting and restarts reach through nested scenes, so a media file or overlay set to restart in a nested scene starts over when the scene showing it goes on program, and a preview showing that scene directly never restarts an overlay program shows through it. The Sources panel adds kind Scene with a picker of scenes and Program, and Cut and Transition report a refusal. Replay does not offer scene or program sources. Removing a scene clears the item selection, which its cascade can shift.
  • Merged with main (moq-dev/studio#63, moq-dev/studio#66): the compositor's drawn set, which decides overlay restarts (on_air_sources) and painting (shown), now walks scene sources with Collection::drawn, so restarts and painting agree for nested scenes. A background-removed source draws its cut-out through a nested scene with no change: the matte is per source, and a scene or program source cannot have its own background removed (Source::removes_background excludes them).
  • Clipboard: a copied scene source passes the clip's own check against placeholder scenes; pasting validates against the destination.
  • Deletes the quest and its links; published.md now says a scene source draws at its scene's size once scenes have one.

Impact

  • Scene file: new source kinds scene (with scene) and program. README documents them under Scene sources.
  • moq-scene API (breaking): Compositor::cut(&collection, &sources) -> Result and Compositor::transition(&collection, transition, &sources, now) -> Result.
  • Cut and Transition refuse a scene that shows the program; an edit making the scene on air show it is refused.

Choices made without asking

  • File shape: kind = "scene" with scene = "Name", and a separate kind = "program", rather than reserving a scene name for the program, which a user scene could collide with.
  • Program on program is refused rather than drawn as last frame's program (a feedback tunnel) or as nothing, matching "a scene cannot contain itself". Hidden items count, so showing one never needs a different rule than adding one. A further canvas's layout or top layer may show the program, since the main program never draws it.
  • Size: scenes have no size yet, so a nested scene draws at the main canvas's size; the published-scenes quest now carries drawing at the scene's own size.
  • Transparent nested scenes, so a lower-third scene composites over what is under it, which needed the blend-mode fix above.
  • Removing a scene cascades to its scene sources and their items, as removing a source does, rather than refusing.
  • Clones of scene sources are allowed (they resolve through capture); masks reading a scene are refused, since a mask has no moment for the nested scene's keyframes.
  • A nested scene shown in the top layer holds its keyframes at their start, since the top layer never goes on.

Measurements

compositor::bench::nested_scenes (release, Apple M-series GPU via Metal, 1080p, each item a quarter canvas at half opacity, preview and program drawn and the GPU waited on per frame; the scene on program is also in preview, as at launch). "direct" places every source in the scene; "nested" places them in a scene the scene shows through one scene source; "program" shows the program in preview through a program source.

sources case frame passes texture copies
4 direct 0.64 ms 2 0
4 nested 0.67 ms 3 0
4 program 0.53 ms 2 0
16 direct 1.24 ms 2 0
16 nested 0.96 ms 3 0
16 program 0.86 ms 2 0
64 direct 3.95 ms 2 0
64 nested 2.34 ms 3 0
64 program 2.25 ms 2 0

A nested scene costs one render pass and no texture copy: its items draw once into its texture, and each place showing it draws one quad, so a scene shown in both preview and program gets cheaper nested (its items draw once instead of twice). A program source adds no pass or copy at all. Encoder load is unchanged: the exporter reads the same program texture. sources_against_canvases matches the numbers recorded in moq-dev/studio#42 (for example 64 sources on 4 canvases: 14.9 ms dense, 4.5 ms sparse, against 17.0 ms and 4.9 ms there), so the pass reordering costs nothing.

Validation

  • just ci passes on fa470e3 (250 tests).
  • GPU tests on Metal: cargo test -p moq-scene --lib -- --include-ignored compositor:: overlay:: edit:: passes on fa470e3 (78 tests). New this round: an_overlay_in_a_nested_scene_restarts_going_on (fails with the restart check walking only top-level items: the overlay neither restarts nor paints), and removes_the_background now also draws the cut-out through a nested scene.
  • Earlier rounds, on c30a39b: all 98 compositor::, collection::, edit::, and clip:: tests, ignored GPU tests included; the blur and transparent-blend tests fail on the base's pass order and blend shader respectively.
  • Unit tests: validation and cycles (collection::tests::refuses_a_scene_drawing_itself, now with the top layer showing a keyed scene), drawn_reaches_through_scenes, reads_a_scene_source; edit cascades and identity through a draft (edit::tests::a_scene_source_follows_its_scene, renames_and_reorders_scenes); clipboard (clip::tests::a_scene_source_pastes_where_its_scene_is); engine::tests::a_scene_on_air_stays.
  • Deep chains: a scratch test (not kept) with a chain of 30,000 scenes aborted with a stack overflow in validation on fab326e, and validates on c30a39b. It takes 11.6 s, because scene-by-name lookup is linear. That cost was already there and only matters for files nobody writes by hand.

Review

  • Reviewer: Codex, gpt-6.1-sol, medium effort (quest review --base origin/main), new session.
  • Round 1 on fa470e3 (this head, the merge of main with nested restarts): no findings.
  • Earlier: c30a39b had no findings in its session; the clipboard finding on fab326e was fixed there.

Online findings on fab326e, all answered on their threads:

  • OpenAI review: scene sources jumped scenes across chained renames in one draft. Fixed in 4434d94 and 381ec21.
  • CodeRabbit edit.rs:634 (same issue): fixed, as above.
  • CodeRabbit edit.rs:590, selection after removing a scene: fixed in 4434d94.
  • CodeRabbit collection.rs:1623, Replay offered scene and program sources: fixed in 4434d94.
  • CodeRabbit compositor.rs:505, top layer showing a keyed scene: now refused by validation, in 4434d94.
  • CodeRabbit collection.rs:273, recursion: fixed in 243627e, in validation and in the compositor's Nesting::walk.
  • CodeRabbit compositor.rs:1307, a move's nested picture: fixed in 243627e. Unlike the suggested patch, the outgoing-moment draw is not shared with the preview, because the shared key describes the incoming item's state.
  • CodeRabbit nitpicks: three of the suggested tests were added (two visible placements, a program inside nested scenes, a blend over a partly transparent backdrop). Declined: caching planning across frames. CodeRabbit itself rates the cost unmeasured, the bench above shows a nested frame no slower than a direct one, and a cache would need invalidation rules for edits, keyframes, and sources.
  • pullfrog fails for its own reasons (its free model hit a usage limit), not because of this PR.

Follow-ups

None worth a quest of their own; drawing a nested scene at its own size is now part of published scenes.

A new source kind, `scene`, draws another scene as one picture, and
`program` draws whatever the program output shows, transitions included,
on the same frame. A nested scene renders once per frame at the main
canvas's size into a transparent texture of its own, only while something
drawn shows it; its keyframes play from when the scene showing it went on.

A scene cannot draw itself, even through others; a scene drawing the
program cannot go on program, so Compositor::cut and transition now take
the collection and refuse it, and the studio refuses an edit making the
scene on air draw it. Renaming or removing a scene carries its scene
sources along.

Frames now run each target's rasters just before it, so a blur reads a
nested scene drawn this frame, and a blend mode composites over a
transparent backdrop as the CSS spec does.

Automated review by review (OpenAI)

Reviewed head: fab326e

[P2] Preserve scene-source targets across chained renames (edit.rs:631–634). In the already-supported renames_and_reorders_scenes sequence, rename scene 0 from Scene to Other, then scene 1 from Other to Next within one Draft. A source originally drawing scene 0 is rewritten to Other, then matched and rewritten again to Next. A third scene displaying that source silently shows the wrong scene after a valid edit. Track target identity across the Draft or apply original-to-final mappings once; extend the chained-rename test with sources targeting both scenes.

Direction: the dependency-ordered rendering and per-moment nested textures fit the design; fix the rename identity issue before merging. The clipboard fix described in the PR's earlier review is present with regression coverage.

Verification: GitHub-only static review of implementation and tests; no tests or GPU benchmarks executed independently. The head's Check workflow is still running.

Walkthrough

The change adds scene and program sources that can display another scene or the current program. Collection validation checks missing scene targets, recursive drawing, and program feedback. The compositor renders nested scenes and program sources, with timing and blending support. Scene edits and clip pastes account for scene references. Studio state and controls support the new sources and guard against program feedback. Documentation and examples describe the source kinds and their restrictions.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review fab32

Resolve the nested-animation and scene-editing defects before merging: accepted layouts can display frozen or jumping content, and edits can target or retain the wrong scene content. Replay also offers unsupported choices, while unusually deep scene files can crash during loading.

1026-1027: Trivial · Performance & Scalability · Poor tradeoff

Consider caching the settled state of nested scenes between frames.

moment calls Collection::drawn for each nested scene, and each call walks that scene's reachable subgraph. For a chain of N nested scenes, planning can perform about O(N²) item visits per frame. Collection::scene also performs a linear name lookup on each step. Compositor::render rebuilds Nesting on every call, so no planning result is reused between frames.

The impact is unmeasured. Typical layouts usually contain few nested levels, so the cost may be small. If planning runs inside the state lock held by the studio render call, the cost can extend the lock hold on each frame. Measure planning time on a deep scene chain before treating this as a frame-time problem.

A cache needs an invalidation rule for edits, keyframe changes, and source changes. Design that rule before implementing the cache.

Add a test for two visible placements of one scene.

a_scene_source_draws_its_scene places red scene once as visible. Its second red scene item has visible: false. The only nested-target check is assert_eq!(studio.compositor.nested.get("red").map(Vec::len), Some(1)). An implementation that allocates one target per visible placement still passes this check, because only one placement is visible.

The nested doc comment states that a scene source is drawn once however many items show it. No test covers that case. Add a scene with two visible red scene items at the same moment, and assert one nested target for red. Use a separate test or fixture so the existing pixel expectations, such as the BLUE check at (6, 6), stay unchanged.

Add a render test for a scene source that shows a scene containing the program.

No compositor test renders a Source::Scene whose target holds a Source::Program item. Compositor::render draws nests that show the program after draw_program, and draws all other nests before it (rs/moq-scene/src/compositor.rs:532). The existing program test previews scene as a root (rs/moq-scene/src/compositor.rs:3372), so it does not exercise this ordering.

A change that draws every nest before the program would leave the program region blank for such a nest. The current tests would still pass. Add a test that wraps a program-containing scene in a scene source and checks the program pixels. Consider adding a second nesting level.

Add a regression test for a non-normal blend over a semi-transparent backdrop.

The blend-mode tests in rs/moq-scene/src/compositor.rs composite over an opaque backdrop, a fully transparent backdrop, or no backdrop. No test uses a non-normal blend over a backdrop with alpha between 0 and 1. A regression in how fs_blend in rs/moq-scene/src/effect.wgsl mixes with partial backdrop alpha would not fail the current suite. The current formula handles this case correctly, so this is a coverage gap rather than a current defect.

Add a case next to blend_modes_mix_with_what_is_under that puts a non-normal blend (for example Blend::Multiply) over a backdrop with partial alpha. Assert the pixel against the premultiplied result of the blend formula.

A draft that renamed a scene to a name another still had, then renamed or
removed that other, retargeted or removed the first scene's sources too.
The draft now follows each scene by place, as Collection::renames does,
and each scene source by the scene it draws.

Also: the top layer refuses a scene with keyframes, which it never starts;
Replay no longer offers scene and program sources; removing a scene clears
the item selection its cascade can shift.

Removing a scene's sources finds the items showing them by scene name, so
a scene that took the removed one's name in the same draft lost its own.

… picture as its stacking

Validation and the compositor walked chained scenes on the call stack, so a
long enough chain aborted on a stack overflow. Both now keep a stack of
their own.

A move drew a paired scene source's picture at the incoming scene's moment
from its first frame, jumping the nested scene back to its start. It now
draws the outgoing moment until halfway, as a look that cannot be mixed
does, and never shares that draw with the preview.

Tests: a scene showing the program through two scene sources draws after
it, a scene shown twice draws once, and a blend mode over a partly

No new actionable findings in the changes since fab326e, accounting for the merged base changes (current base: efd5ca3).

The previous P2 is resolved: scene sources now follow scene identity across chained renames and removals, with regression coverage in edit.rs:1386–1480. I also checked the iterative nesting traversal, outgoing/incoming nested-picture timing during moves, top-layer keyframe validation, and Replay/selection fixes.

Direction: sharing scene identity tracking with rename reconciliation addresses the root cause; the dependency-ordered compositor remains a suitable approach. No further redesign or blocking code changes identified in this round.

Verification: GitHub-only static review of implementation and tests. quest context, tests, and GPU benchmarks were not run independently. The head's Check workflow is still running.

✅ No new issues found.

Reviewed changes — the delta since the last Pullfrog review (fab326e..c30a39b), with base-branch merges excluded:

  • Scene-source identity through a draft: a Draft now follows each scene by a stable place id (Places) and records which scene each scene source draws (drawing), so chained renames, name reuse, and removals reach only that scene's own sources; rename_scene retargets through the id, and remove_scene takes the scene out before cascading to its sources' items.
  • Iterative nesting walks: Collection::validate_nesting and the compositor's Nesting::walk use explicit stacks, so long scene chains no longer overflow the call stack, with cycle detection and program-flag propagation preserved through the stack.
  • A move draws a nested scene at the outgoing moment: a paired scene source shows its nested scene at from.1 until halfway and to.1 after, and the shared draw cache only reuses an item when both the pose and the moment match, so the preview never shows the incoming moment with the outgoing picture.
  • Top-layer keyed scenes refused: every non-scene top layer (main and extra canvases) rejects direct keyframes and scene sources that reach keyed items, since the top layer never goes on.
  • Replay and selection fixes: Replay filters out Source::Scene/Source::Program, and removing a scene clears the item selection before the cascade shifts preview indices.
  • Tests: a scene shown twice draws once, a program inside nested scenes draws after it, a move shows the nested scene at the outgoing moment until halfway, and a blend mode over a partly transparent backdrop mixes partly.

…-source

Overlays restart on air through nested scenes: the compositor's on-air and
preview checks walk scene sources, as painting does, so an overlay in a nested
scene restarts when the scene showing it goes on program, and a preview
showing it directly never restarts it under program. A background-removed
source draws its cut-out through a nested scene.

No new actionable findings in the integration changes since c30a39b, accounting for the advanced base (cd6d780).

The shared nested-scene traversal now feeds overlay restart decisions and on-air protection as well as painting. The added regression test checks that a nested overlay restarts on program and that preview does not reset its on-air timeline. The background-removal test also covers drawing the processed picture through a nested scene.

Direction: reusing the existing scene traversal keeps these integrations consistent without adding a second dependency model. No blocking code changes identified in this round.

Verification: GitHub-only static review of the integration code and tests. quest context, tests, and GPU benchmarks were not run independently. The latest head's Check workflow is still running.

Reviewed changes — the delta since the last Pullfrog review (c30a39b), with the merges of main (#63, #66, #65) excluded:

  • One nested walk feeds restart and painting: Compositor::drawn now resolves each canvas/scene place through Collection::drawn, so shown, on_air_sources, and restart reach items inside scene sources instead of only top-level items; both walks' doc comments now say "through the scenes they draw".
  • Overlay restart through a nested scene: an_overlay_in_a_nested_scene_restarts_going_on covers an overlay inside a nested scene restarting when that scene goes on program, and a preview that shows the scene directly not resetting the overlay program is running.
  • Background removal through a nested scene: removes_the_background now draws the cut-out in hand through a scene source with no second matte; Source::removes_background still excludes Scene/Program, so a feed-less scene source never reaches Layer::develop.
  • Merge resolution: restart/shown/on_air_sources keep main's overlay logic (the program clock from now, stinger-masked clips), and the second main merge (#65, recording) resolves cleanly with no authored edits.
