Summary

Plans the X11 follow-up from moq-dev/studio#61 by folding it into the keypad quest, now Hotkeys bind by physical key (m1, [S] to [M]):

  • Keypad keys bind apart from the main row on every platform (unchanged).
  • On X11 the studio grabs by keycode itself through x11rb instead of through global-hotkey, which grabs by keysym and looks it up again in the current layout on release. Any key then binds, including ö on a German layout and a key winit cannot name, and a layout change no longer needs a restart.
  • Binding carries winit's PhysicalKey, taken from the window's winit event, so a key winit leaves Unidentified keeps its native code for the X11 grab (scancode plus 8 via PhysicalKeyExtScancode::to_scancode), and is refused elsewhere.
  • On Windows, where RegisterHotKey matches a virtual key, the studio registers every binding again when the active layout changes, so a layout switch no longer moves a binding to another physical key.

Decisions

  • X11 keycode grab: ✅ folded into the keypad quest, since both rework the same grab path. Not a separate m1 quest, not dropped.
  • CodeRabbit's two findings (Windows layout changes; unidentified X11 keys): folded into this quest's Goal and Plan rather than split out, since both serve its "physical key on every platform" goal and add little to an [M]. Size kept at [M]. The alternative is a separate Windows layout quest; say so if you prefer it.

Review

Codex (gpt-6.1-sol, medium effort), round 2 on head 4d8e01ee9df124977aecbd7edb5eb740751d9c3d: no findings.

CodeRabbit on 8d8f107: both threads fixed in 4d8e01e and resolved (Windows layout, unidentified X11 keys).

Validation

quest check: 41 documents ok. The change touches only quest/, so the Rust, JS, and shell lints in just check were not run.

Automated review by review (OpenAI)

Reviewed head: 8d8f107
Base: 9f3dab7

Approach: folding the X11 follow-up into the keypad quest is coherent. Preserving winit's physical identity removes the keypad aliasing at its source, and retaining the X11 keycode for registration and unregistration removes the layout-dependent keysym lookup rather than adding another restart workaround. The existing layout/release guards and global-hotkey 0.9.0 source support that diagnosis.

One approach question for the maintainer:

  • [P2] Resolve the Windows backend/physical-key goal mismatch — quest/m1/hotkeys-keypad.md:29-30, against the goal at lines 5-8. The retained instruction to register global-hotkey's Numpad* codes on Windows cannot distinguish keypad Enter from main Enter. The pinned 0.9.0 Windows backend maps Enter to VK_RETURN and NumpadEnter to the same VK_RETURN, then passes only that virtual key and modifiers to RegisterHotKey. For example, binding Ctrl+keypad Enter therefore also registers Ctrl+main Enter, contrary to the promised physical separation; carrying KeyCode through Binding cannot restore the distinction after this conversion. This mismatch was already in the base plan, but it is the same keypad/physical-identity problem this rewritten quest is intended to solve, not an unrelated omission. Given this backend evidence, should the Windows goal explicitly exclude that distinction, or should the plan choose a Windows input path that preserves it? Recording that scope/backend decision avoids implementing the stated plan only to discover its goal is unreachable.

Verification limits: static review through the GitHub connector only. Read both changed documents in full, base AGENTS.md/REVIEW.md/CONTRIBUTING.md, the relevant hotkey code, #61's context, and the dependency source. No nested AGENTS.md was returned for quest/ or quest/m1/. No tests, builds, or platform keyboard checks were run. quest context was not run under the connector-only constraint, so its additional Prompting guidance was not verified.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

The quest documentation expands the hotkey requirement to cover physical-key bindings across platforms. It updates the proposed plan to carry winit’s physical KeyCode through Binding, use X11 keycode grabs through x11rb, and limit keypad registration to macOS and Windows while retaining KP_* requests for the Wayland portal.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 8d8f1

This documentation-only change has bounded merge risk, but the plan needs platform-specific corrections before implementation can deliver the promised physical-key behavior.

KDE loses keypad identity for a KP_1 request.

If KDE accepts a fresh KP_1 request unchanged, it registers main-row 1, not keypad 1. The keypad key can fail even with Num Lock on, before it produces KP_End with Num Lock off.

30-31: Minor · Potential issue · Poor tradeoff

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Registering global-hotkey's Numpad* codes on Windows may not preserve physical keypad bindings when Num Lock changes, if the backend registers only the corresponding numeric virtual keys.

The keypad shortcut may not fire, despite the physical-key goal.

This can occur when: A user binds keypad 1 and subsequently presses it with Num Lock off.

…unnamed X11 keys

Folds in CodeRabbit's two findings on the plan: Windows registers by
virtual key, so the studio registers again when the layout changes; and
Binding carries winit's PhysicalKey, so a key winit leaves Unidentified
keeps its native code for the X11 keycode grab.

Decision (maintainer, /quest-complete, 2026-11-07):

Should Windows re-register hotkeys when the keyboard layout changes, so each binding stays on its physical key?

  • ✅ Keep it folded into this quest, now [M]. It is part of "every binding stays on its physical key on every platform" and uses the same registration path.
  • Split it into its own m1 quest.
