One PR for the engine work. It brings in #752 (build caches) and #754 (whisper.rn + executorch) as merge commits, and adds the white-image fix and the Engine updates setting. Ali closes#752 and #754 and merges this one.
What you get
LFM3 on your phone. LFM3 1.7B and LFM3 VL 2B (with its vision projector) are in the catalog. They run on llama.cpp b12032 through our fork @ogai/llama.rn, with LFM3's own chat template.
Newer llama.cpp on Android between app releases. The app downloads a signed engine pack, tests it with one short prompt, and keeps it only when that prompt passes. A pack that is broken, crashes or fails goes back to the bundled engine. iOS gets new engines with each App Store release.
You choose: Settings → Engine updates. On by default. Off means nothing downloads or installs, and an engine update you already have stays in use. The screen shows the running engine, where it came from and the last check. Check now looks at once.
Pictures, not white squares, on iPhone. Image generation on iPhone came back pure white with every SDXL model. It now renders. If a picture ever comes out as one flat colour again, the app tries the next device or shows an error. It never saves a blank picture.
Every engine stays current, every day. The daily engine job names each held engine with its blocker and next step. It auto-merges its own bump PR when CI is green.
White image on iPhone: root cause
Cause. sd.cpp 1b0ba10 (#2085) runs CFG's two UNet passes as one batch of two. ggml's Metal kernel_group_norm_f32 normalises only the first image of a batch: it dispatches one threadgroup per group over ne00*ne01*ne02 and never reads ne03. The second image's GroupNorm output stayed unwritten, so the latents went non-finite. Every picture then decoded pure white.
How it was found:
Reproduced on the Mac (M5, Metal) with sd-cli and the phone's exact settings: RealVisXL v5.0 Lightning Q4_K, dpm++2m/karras, cfg 2, 10 steps, 512×512.
git bisect of sd.cpp 3f8527a (good) → c6dfa9d (white) gave 1b0ba10. Metal with --batched-cfg off and CPU with it on both render.
A per-node Metal-vs-CPU probe showed the first difference is GROUP_NORM [64,64,320,2].
ggml's op tests cover GroupNorm at batch 1 only, so all 17,614 passed. Upstream ggml-org/ggml and llama.cpp master have the same kernel.
Fix (scripts/video/metal-group-norm-batch.patch, applied by build-video-ios.sh). One threadgroup per (group, batch), offset by nb03/nb3.
With batch 2 and 3 added to ggml's test-backend-ops, GroupNorm on Metal fails before the fix (error 1.0 and 1.6) and passes after.
sd-cli with batched CFG on Metal renders: 1 colour before, 93,992 after.
iPhone 17 Pro Max: RealVisXL renders a red ball in 40.7 s on the GPU (screenshot below).
Guard (native/video/common/BlankImage.hpp). The runtime counted any frame with data as an image. A one-colour frame now counts as a failed run, so the existing GPU → CPU retry runs, and if that fails the person sees an error. Android uses the same VideoRuntime.hpp. __tests__/scripts/blankImage.test.ts compiles the real header and runs it on white, flat grey, gradient and one-pixel-different frames.
Not this cause: the 27 October white image was DreamShaper XL Turbo at 50 steps on the old pin 3f8527a (before 1b0ba10). That is a separate case, listed under follow-ups.
Engine updates setting
settings.engineUpdates (default true) is one contract on both platforms. Android: startEnginePacks still settles a pack on trial, so a broken one never stays, then returns before any download when the setting is off. checkEngineUpdatesNow returns staged | current | failed | off | unsupported. iOS reports with-app, and the screen says engines update with the app.
Tests go through the real enginePacks service and the real App, with only the device boundary faked:
With the setting off, no manifest request is made and the active pack stays.
A pack on trial still settles.
Check now covers every outcome.
The rendered screen is tested on Android and iOS.
Engine packs (Android)
JS (src/services/enginePacks) verifies the ed25519-signed manifest against the pinned key. It picks a pack that matches React Native, the bridge hash and the ABI, and whose version is newer than the running engine (a .N rebuild on the same llama.cpp counts). It downloads, checks sha256 and stages the pack. On the next launch, it runs the test prompt under the residency lock.
Native (enginepack/*.kt) checks every file's sha256 and refuses extra files and .. paths. A pack goes on trial, then becomes the engine or is dropped after 2 crashed launches. Before React Native starts, it calls RNLlama.setEnginePackDir.
The catalog gates minLlamaBuild on the running engine (bundled or pack).
Engine update job (engine-updates.yml)
Root cause of run 41308673846: build-video-ios.sh skipped git checkout when a fresh --no-checkout clone's HEAD already equalled the pin. It now always checks out.
update-engines.js: stdout carries only the JSON. The report is written only when every step succeeded, and an engine that cannot be checked fails the run. llama.rn tracks @ogai/llama.rn through the npm: alias.
Held engines name their blocker, start date and next step. A hold older than 3 days opens one issue per engine. whisper.rn and executorch are now current ("held": []).
Auto-merge (Ali approved it for this bot PR only): after CI succeeds on chore/engine-updates, merge-engine-pr.js merges with a merge commit. It waits while a uat-dev, release or release-ios run is going, and refuses any other branch, author or PR that moves pro.
iOS ccache cached nothing. Xcode does not pass CCACHE_BINARY into the compiler's environment, so RN's wrapper ran plain clang. scripts/xcode-ccache.sh writes clang/clang++ wrappers that hard-code ccache, and CI and the nightly both use it. __tests__/scripts/xcodeCcache.test.ts runs the real script.
CI caches were lost on a red gate.actions/cache saves only when the whole job succeeds. Pods, iOS video runtime, ModuleCache and Jest now use cache/restore + cache/save, saved once the filling step has run.
whisper.rn 0.5.5 → 0.7.4. The native realtime API is gone. Realtime transcription is JS (RealtimeTranscriber over JSI transcribeData), fed by the app's own recorder through RecorderAudioStream. The final text comes from the recording, and the live preview stands in only if that pass fails. The old SIGSEGV patch is dropped because the code it patched is deleted.
react-native-executorch 0.9.3 → 0.11.0. Kokoro (pro) moves to react-native-executorch/legacy, with the same hooks and voice files, so no re-download. Peers: worklets 0.12.2, reanimated 4.6.0, blob-util 0.25.1. Native downloads are limited to xnnpack + phonemis.
One startup SIGSEGV on the Nord in 52 launches is the existing Reanimated teardown race, fixed only in 4.7.x (RN ≥ 0.86). Main has the same path.
Checks
Pre-push gate passes: the full Jest run, tsc, ESLint, depcruise and knip. New code has 100% coverage.
Android :app:testDebugUnitTest, including 12 EnginePackStore tests on real files.
ggml test-backend-ops on Metal: GroupNorm at batch 1, 2 and 3.
The live manifest at mobile-runtime.getoffgridai.co (0.13.0-b12032.2) verifies with the pinned key.

Image generation on iPhone (Metal GroupNorm fix)
RealVisXL v5.0 Lightning made a pure-white picture on every run. It now renders on the GPU.
iPhone: a red ball in 40.7 s, where every picture was white before
Nord: the same model renders with this build (Vulkan, not affected by the Metal bug; the blank-frame guard ships on both)
The phone had 4 GB free, under the 3.5 GB model's budget, so the memory gate asked first. With Run anyway, auto-fit ran it on the CPU with weights read from disk, which took 24m 48s.
Engine updates
iPhone: Settings has an Engine updates row
iPhone: engines update with the app; the running engine is shown
Nord: on by default, running the bundled engine 0.13.0-b12032.1
Nord: Check now finds 0.13.0-b12032.2 on the live manifest and stages it, with no app update
Nord: after reopening, the pack passed its test prompt and runs
Nord: off, and the engine update you have stays in use
Nord: a launch with updates off makes no check (last check cleared first, still "Not checked yet")
Nord: a broken pack goes back to the bundled engine
One library in the active pack was truncated through run-as. At the next launch, native logged does not match its sha256, dropped the pack and recorded it as rejected. The app runs the bundled 0.13.0-b12032.1, and the next check (11:48) does not fetch that pack again.

Before
After
Follow-ups (not in this PR)
OGAD on a Mac has the same Metal GroupNorm bug. The desktop pins sd.cpp 37bc88b, which is after 1b0ba10, so SDXL with CFG on Metal will render white. The same patch applies there. The fix should also go upstream to ggml-org/ggml with the batch-2 test.
LFM3 VL's QAD file downloads without vision.modelIdentityStem in shared @offgrid/models strips UD but not QAD, so LFM3-VL-2B-QAD-Q4_0.gguf pairs with no projector.
A pasted note with no title fails to save on Android: its name is an ISO time with :, which RNFS reads as a URI. It is already on main (978c038).
The 27 October white image (DreamShaper XL Turbo, 50 steps, pin 3f8527a) is a separate case. Turbo models diverge at high step counts, so the catalog should cap their steps.
A failed test prompt on a real pack can't be forced on a phone (no debug hook). The integration test covers it.
…evision
A fresh --no-checkout clone has HEAD at upstream's tip with an empty index. When the pin is that
tip (what the engine-updates job picks), the old HEAD check skipped the checkout and
'submodule update ggml' failed: pathspec 'ggml' did not match.
…the step
npm and pod install logged to stdout, so engines.json held build logs and the PR step crashed
parsing it. The tee pipe also hid the script's exit code.
The daily PR now moves our fork, imported as llama.rn via an npm alias, and keeps the alias when
it bumps. Comments now state the policy: iOS gets engines in releases, Android also over the air.
…ild 11938
LFM3's lfm3 arch and lfm3vl projector landed in llama.cpp 19cce69 (build 11938), so an older
engine never offers them. Files are pinned to the Hugging Face commit with their sha256. The
models render their own GGUF template: llama.cpp's Jinja engine skips the transformers-only
{% generation %} tags, so the <think> prefix and qwen3_coder tool calls survive (not ChatML).
… pack
A manifest counts only when its ed25519 signature matches the pinned key. A pack is chosen only
when it matches the app's React Native version, llama.rn bridge and ABI, carries a newer llama.cpp
than the running one, and was never rejected on this phone.
…s back
After boot the app settles a pack on trial: one that did not load is rejected; one that loaded runs
a test prompt on the smallest downloaded GGUF under the residency lock, then is accepted or rejected
and the app relaunches on the bundled engine. Once a day it fetches the signed manifest, downloads
the newest fitting pack, checks its sha256 and stages it for the next launch. Catalog gates
(minLlamaBuild) follow the engine that actually runs. iOS does nothing here.
…r, patch dropped
whisper.rn 0.7 removes the native realtime API (transcribeRealtime, AudioSessionIos) and the
Android WhisperContext.java / JNI realtime code that patches/whisper.rn+0.5.5.patch fixed (the
double finishRealtimeTranscribe SIGSEGV). Nothing is left to port, so the patch is dropped.
Realtime transcription now runs whisper.rn's RealtimeTranscriber, which decodes PCM slices with
the JSI transcribeData. The app's recorder already owns the microphone and writes the
recording; RecorderAudioStream hands the same buffers to the transcriber, so there is one
capture and no new native dependency. The transcriber drops the slice still decoding when it
stops, so the final text now comes from the recording; the live preview stands in only when the
file pass fails or hears nothing.
The native 30 s capture cap is gone with the native API, so the test of a session ending itself
at that cap is removed.
… worklets and Reanimated in step
executorch 0.10 is a ground-up rewrite; the pre-0.10 API ships as react-native-executorch/legacy,
which react-native-executorch-bare-resource-fetcher 0.11 targets. Kokoro (pro) moves there: same
hooks, same stream/streamStop, same v0.9.0 Kokoro files, so no voice is downloaded again.
Peers: react-native-worklets 0.8.3 → 0.12.2 and react-native-reanimated 4.3.4 → 4.6.0, the
newest pair that supports RN 0.83 and executorch's <0.14 worklets range; react-native-blob-util
0.25.1 added.
executorch now downloads its native libraries at install. The "react-native-executorch" block
limits that to what Kokoro uses (xnnpack + phonemis): no OpenCV, Core ML, MLX or Vulkan.
package-lock.json also carries whisper.rn 0.7.4 from the previous commit.
react-native-executorch 0.11 depends on react-native-device-info ^15.0.2, so the app's copy moves
from 15.0.1 to 15.0.2. The patch applies unchanged; the new name stops patch-package's version
warning.
…ngine's blocker and next step, fail on any unchecked engine
- llama.rn follows package.json: upstream today, @offgrid/llama.rn once aliased (it is not on npm yet, so tracking it failed every run).
- A held engine carries its blocker, the date its hold began and the next step; one issue per engine after 3 days (engine-held-issues.js).
- An engine that cannot be checked fails the run before anything changes; --json writes the report only when every step succeeded.
…ine issues current
The nightly (uat-dev.yml) has no cron and is dispatched from ~11:00 UTC; GitHub started the 06:00 cron at 12:54, so the job moves to an off-hour minute well before. bash -eo pipefail for every step.
A remote media model reports only an id and a name, so its ModelCard drew one thin line: the
name and a cloud. Text model cards carry a second line. Each remote media card now carries the
same facts line as the other model cards: what the model does and the computer it runs on
("Voice · Runs on Studio Mac"). Same ModelCard component, so height, padding, state (check)
and action (tap to select) match. Raw server paths stay hidden.
…g a nightly or upload
Merge commit only, with PRO_SUBMODULE_PAT and --match-head-commit. Waits up to 5 h for uat-dev,
release and release-ios runs to end. Refuses any other branch or author and any PR that moves pro.
Approved by Ali for chore/engine-updates only.
…oll back a pack that fails
EnginePackStore checks every file's sha256, the bridge, React Native and the ABI; a pack goes on
trial, becomes the engine after a passed test prompt, and is dropped after a crash loop or a
failed test. EnginePackBoot calls RNLlama.setEnginePackDir before React Native starts.

The pull request adds Android engine-pack updates, revises daily engine-update automation, replaces Whisper’s realtime transcription path, and adds LFM3 model support. It also changes model-card details, generation-stop handling, and build tooling.
Changes: Android engine-pack delivery
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Manifest verification and compatibility src/services/enginePacks/manifest.ts, android/app/build.gradle, package.json, knip.json, __tests__/unit/services/enginePackManifest.test.ts, __tests__/integration/models/enginePackLiveManifest.live.test.ts
The manifest service validates signatures and pack metadata, compares engine versions, and selects compatible packs. Android build fields expose the engine bridge and version. Tests cover manifest validation and pack selection.
Native storage and trial state android/app/src/main/java/ai/offgridmobile/enginepack/EnginePackStore.kt, android/app/src/test/java/ai/offgridmobile/enginepack/EnginePackStoreTest.kt
The store validates installed pack files and records state. It selects trial or active packs, and supports acceptance, trial retention, rejection, and bundled-engine fallback.
Android boot and React Native bridge android/app/src/main/java/ai/offgridmobile/enginepack/*, android/app/src/main/java/ai/offgridmobile/MainApplication.kt
Android startup selects and configures the stored engine pack. The React Native module exposes status, installation, trial decisions, rejection, and relaunch operations.
JavaScript update and trial lifecycle src/services/enginePacks/*, src/services/llamaEngineSupport.ts, App.tsx, __tests__/integration/models/enginePackUpdate.test.ts, __tests__/integration/models/searchHidesUnrunnableModels.rendered.test.tsx
The service fetches and verifies updates, stages selected packs, and tests trial packs. App initialization starts engine-pack handling, and engine-build lookup uses the loaded pack build when available.
LFM3 model and chat-template support
Layer / File(s)
Summary
LFM3 catalog entries and template catalog/models.json, __tests__/fixtures/lfm3/*, __tests__/integration/models/lfm3ChatTemplate.test.ts

Engine-update automation
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Alias-aware checks and reports scripts/lib/engines.*, scripts/update-engines.js, __tests__/unit/scripts/engines.test.ts
Engine checks resolve npm aliases and configured dependency keys. Held results include dates and next steps. Reports are written after checks succeed.
The workflow produces a report and synchronizes issues for held engines. The issue script creates or updates issues for eligible holds and closes matching issues when engines become current.
The recorder delivers sample buffers to listeners while preserving level callbacks. RecorderAudioStream converts float samples to PCM16 and forwards them to Whisper.
Whisper transcription contract and service src/types/whisper.rn.d.ts, src/services/whisperService.ts, __tests__/contracts/whisper.contract.test.ts, __tests__/unit/services/whisperService.test.ts, jest.setup.ts, package.json, patches/whisper.rn+0.5.5.patch
The Whisper contract now uses transcribeData. The service streams recorder audio for preview and uses file transcription for the final result, with preview fallback when file transcription fails or returns empty text. Test fakes and audio integration tests use the updated transcription flow.
Generation stop handling
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Stop requests during generation src/services/llm.ts, __tests__/harness/nativeBoundary.ts, __tests__/integration/generation/stopKeepsPartial.rendered.redflow.test.tsx
The stop path awaits completion cancellation. The test boundary models queued tokens after Stop and records callback errors. An integration test checks that the partial output remains visible.

Layer / File(s)
Summary
Remote model labels and card facts src/components/models/RemoteModelOptionsSection.tsx, src/components/models/RemoteModelServerGroup.tsx, __tests__/integration/models/remoteMediaModelPickers.rendered.test.tsx
Remote model cards display a category label and server name. The picker test checks the voice-model name and server label.
The script creates ccache-backed compiler wrappers and an Xcode configuration. CI and UAT use the script, and tests cover its output and failure cases. CI cache restore and save steps are separated.
Shared paths and pinned source checkout metro.config.js, scripts/build-video-ios.sh, pro
Metro uses the shared directory’s real path when it exists. The video build script fetches a pinned commit only when needed and checks it out detached. The pro subproject reference changes.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 48094
Several open concerns should be resolved or accepted before merge. The default test run needs network access, an older engine pack can stay active after an app upgrade, and the test harness can hide token-callback errors. A failed live transcription start also leaves an audio listener registered, which wastes work on later recordings. The PR also notes that device testing is still pending.

Pin the semver version in the merge job.
npm install --no-save semver installs the newest registry version outside a lockfile. The step env holds PRO_SUBMODULE_PAT, and merge-engine-pr.js loads semver through engines.js. A bad semver release would run with that PAT. --ignore-scripts does not block code that runs at require time.
Pin the exact version that package.json or package-lock.json uses.

Pin the semver dependency in the merge job’s npm install command to the exact
version declared in package.json or package-lock.json, rather than installing
the latest registry version; keep the existing install flags unchanged.
Run the held-issue sync after the PR step so an issue failure cannot block the bump PR.
engine-held-issues.js fails the run on any gh error, for example a rate limit or a search failure. This step comes before "Open or update the engine PR" and has no if:. A failure here skips the PR step, so engines that moved are not proposed that day. The issue report is secondary to the PR.
Move this step after "Open or update the engine PR". The "Report" step already uses if: always(), so it still runs.

Scope the GITHUB_TOKEN permissions per job instead of at workflow level.
This change adds issues: write to a workflow-level block that already grants contents: write and pull-requests: write. The new merge job inherits all three scopes. It does not need them. It uses PRO_SUBMODULE_PAT for the merge and for gh. The update job pushes and creates the PR with the PAT too. Its only GITHUB_TOKEN use is issues: write for engine-held-issues.js.
Set a read-only top-level default. Elevate only where needed.
The merge job then keeps only the top-level contents: read.
Based on learnings: "set a top-level permissions: block defaulting to least privilege (e.g., contents: read), and have individual jobs override/elevate only the specific scopes they need."

bumpMergeDecision refuses only a pro path change and a non-bot author email. A git author email is not authenticated. Anyone who can push to chore/engine-updates can set BOT_EMAIL as author and change any file other than pro. If CI passes, the job merges that change to main with PRO_SUBMODULE_PAT. That path can bypass branch protection that would require a review. The daily job force-pushes this branch, so the files it changes are a small known set.
Refuse any path outside that set. The set matches the git add list in .github/workflows/engine-updates.yml. Then pro needs no special case.

Hashing every pack file on each cold start runs on the main thread.
chooseAtBoot calls problemWith for the trial and active packs. problemWith calls sha256(file) on every file. EnginePackBoot.apply calls chooseAtBoot from Application.onCreate, so this hashing runs on the main thread before React Native loads. A pack holds the full librnllama*.so set, so the cost grows with pack size. It affects every launch while a pack is active, not only the launch that installs it.
Measure the cost on a mid-range device. If it is noticeable, verify the full hashes only at install. At boot, compare a cheap fingerprint of each file, such as size and lastModified, against the values recorded at install. Re-hash only when the fingerprint differs. This keeps the tamper and corruption check and removes most of the boot cost.

A pending check skips the merge, and nothing re-triggers the merge job.
The merge job runs on workflow_run completion of CI only. Assume another check on the PR, such as the SonarCloud status context in the test fixture, is still pending when CI completes. bumpMergeDecision then returns skip with "checks not green". The comment says "a later CI run decides". No later CI run starts unless a new commit arrives. The PR stays open until the next daily force-push.

llama.rn types stopCompletion() as a Promise, but its JSI returns undefined, so the resent Stop's
.catch threw from the native token callback (red screen on the Nord, LFM3-VL). The harness now
returns what the JSI returns, keeps callback throws out of the completion as the JSI does, and can
deliver a token already queued when Stop lands. Same JSI in upstream rc.9: main has this bug too.
…ine, not its llama build
A .N rebuild on the same llama.cpp (0.13.0-b12032.2 after .1) ships native glue fixes, and the
old llama-build test skipped it. Versions order as semver, with a bN tag read as its build number.
The APK reports its bundled llama.rn version; a loaded pack reports its own. minLlamaBuild still
gates models such as LFM3.

Fail tests for unhandled token callback errors.
This shared fake now records callback exceptions and lets completion continue. Other tests using setupChatScreen do not check tokenCallbackErrors, and the global cleanup does not check it either. Do not select updates below the bundled engine version.
If an APK upgrade bundles a newer engine but keeps the same bridge, EnginePackStore.chooseAtBoot can still load the older active pack. This line then uses that pack as the only version floor. …ch, so pictures render instead of coming back white
sd.cpp runs CFG's two UNet passes as one batch of two (1b0ba10, #2085). ggml's Metal
kernel_group_norm_f32 dispatched one threadgroup per group over ne00*ne01*ne02 and never
touched ne03, so the second image's GroupNorm output stayed unwritten, the latents went
non-finite and every picture decoded pure white. One threadgroup per (group, batch) now,
offset by nb03/nb3. Upstream ggml-org/ggml has the same kernel; its op tests cover batch 1 only.
…back to the next device or reports an error, never saves a blank picture
Non-finite latents still decode, to one saturated colour. The runtime accepted any frame
with data. isBlankImage is checked in produced(), so the existing GPU -> CPU retry runs.
The test compiles the real header and runs it on white, flat grey, gradient and one-pixel frames.

What you get
@ogai/llama.rn, with LFM3's own chat template.White image on iPhone: root cause
Cause. sd.cpp 1b0ba10 (#2085) runs CFG's two UNet passes as one batch of two. ggml's Metal
kernel_group_norm_f32normalises only the first image of a batch: it dispatches one threadgroup per group overne00*ne01*ne02and never readsne03. The second image's GroupNorm output stayed unwritten, so the latents went non-finite. Every picture then decoded pure white. How it was found:
git bisectof sd.cpp 3f8527a (good) → c6dfa9d (white) gave 1b0ba10. Metal with--batched-cfg offand CPU with it on both render.GROUP_NORM [64,64,320,2].Fix (
scripts/video/metal-group-norm-batch.patch, applied bybuild-video-ios.sh). One threadgroup per (group, batch), offset bynb03/nb3.test-backend-ops, GroupNorm on Metal fails before the fix (error 1.0 and 1.6) and passes after.Guard (
native/video/common/BlankImage.hpp). The runtime counted any frame with data as an image. A one-colour frame now counts as a failed run, so the existing GPU → CPU retry runs, and if that fails the person sees an error. Android uses the sameVideoRuntime.hpp.__tests__/scripts/blankImage.test.tscompiles the real header and runs it on white, flat grey, gradient and one-pixel-different frames. Not this cause: the 27 October white image was DreamShaper XL Turbo at 50 steps on the old pin 3f8527a (before 1b0ba10).
