Description

Fixes #10657. Changing "Inherited from" on an existing table in the table dialog did not match what was saved:

  • Removing a parent removed its columns from the Columns tab, but Save only ran NO INHERIT. PostgreSQL keeps those columns on the child as local columns, so they came back, editable, when the dialog was reopened. The parent's CHECK constraints and NOT NULL markings stayed on the child too.
  • Adding a parent to an existing table that doesn't have the parent's columns failed with child table is missing column "id". It also failed when a column the table already has was nullable but the parent's was NOT NULL, when the parent had a generated column, or when the table had rows and the parent had a NOT NULL column.
  • The tree icon after Save showed the inheritance from before the save: the inherits arrow stayed after removing the parent and disappeared after adding it back.

Root Cause

  • Remove: since fix: remove inherited columns after parent removal #10504 (bdb652b77), reopened inherited columns carry inheritedid, so the dialog's removal (table.ui.js:703) now takes them out of the grid and sends them as columns.deleted. _check_for_column_delete() skipped DROP COLUMN for any deleted column with inheritedfrom set, so only NO INHERIT was emitted. NO INHERIT also keeps the parent's CHECK constraints and NOT NULL markings as local ones.
  • Add: _check_for_column_add() (tables/utils.py:1534) skips new columns marked as inherited, leaving only ALTER TABLE ... INHERIT parent. PostgreSQL requires the child to already have all of the parent's columns (same type, typmod, collation, NOT NULL and generation expression) and its inheritable CHECK constraints before INHERIT.
  • Icon: update() built the icon from res['rows'][0], which holds the table's properties fetched before the update ran.

Fix

Removing a parent

  • tables/utils.py:1290, new _get_still_inherited_columns(): returns the names of the columns that the parents still in "Inherited from" provide.
  • tables/utils.py:1348, _check_for_column_delete(): a deleted inherited column is now dropped unless a remaining parent still provides it. Dropping such a column would fail with cannot drop inherited column. NO INHERIT is rendered before the column SQL, so the drop runs after the column is no longer inherited.
  • New get_uninherit_checks.sql and get_uninherit_not_nulls.sql: find the CHECK constraints and NOT NULL markings the table only has from the removed parents. update.sql emits DROP CONSTRAINT IF EXISTS / ALTER COLUMN ... DROP NOT NULL for them right after NO INHERIT (default/update.sql:60, 15_plus/update.sql:68). Primary key and replica identity columns keep their NOT NULL, and a removed parent's NOT NULL NO INHERIT (PostgreSQL 18+) never applied to the table, so it isn't dropped.

Adding a parent

  • New get_inherit_prerequisite_columns.sql: returns the added parents' columns that the table is missing, with the type from format_type(atttypid, atttypmod), collation, NOT NULL, default and generation expression (stored or virtual). It also returns columns the table has without a NOT NULL that a parent requires. A parent's NOT NULL NO INHERIT (PostgreSQL 18+) doesn't count, as it isn't required of the child. For a column several added parents share, the default comes from the first parent that has one, as CREATE TABLE ... INHERITS does. The dialog only sends a basic type (e.g. character varying, not varchar(10)), which INHERIT would reject, so the definitions come from the catalog.
  • New get_inherit_prerequisite_checks.sql: returns the added parents' inheritable CHECK constraints the table is missing, via pg_get_constraintdef().
  • default/update.sql:32 and 15_plus/update.sql:40: emit ADD COLUMN (with DEFAULT, so existing rows get a value, and GENERATED ALWAYS AS (...) STORED or VIRTUAL for generated columns, which come last), ALTER COLUMN ... SET NOT NULL and ADD CONSTRAINT just before INHERIT.
  • _filter_new_tables(): works out the added and removed parents in the order of the "Inherited from" list, instead of with sets, so several parents are inherited in a stable order. Both lists are now worked out on every change, so replacing a parent while adding others ([a] → [b, c]) also emits NO INHERIT a.
  • tables/utils.py:1307, new _get_inherit_changes(): runs the four queries above and passes the results to update.sql.

Tree icon

  • tables/utils.py:1850, update(): the icon is now built from nodes.sql for the table after the update (looked up in its current schema), the same query the tree uses.

Behaviour to be aware of

  • What removing a parent drops: the columns, CHECK constraints and NOT NULL markings the parent contributed, including ones the child also declared itself. attislocal can't tell those apart from columns this PR adds before INHERIT, which PostgreSQL also marks as local. The dialog removes the columns from the Columns tab, and the SQL tab lists each DROP before Save.
  • Errors still left to PostgreSQL: pgAdmin doesn't change or invent data to work around these, and each error names the column or constraint:
    • a parent's NOT NULL column with no default, on a table that already has rows (contains null values);
    • a same-named NO INHERIT CHECK already on the child (conflicts with non-inherited constraint).
  • Grid with several parents: when a column comes from several parents, the grid still removes it when its first parent is removed, although Save keeps it. This is a pre-existing frontend issue; the dialog only tracks one parent per column.

Test Plan

  • New tables/tests/test_table_inherits_columns.py (msql + PUT, then checks pg_attribute, pg_constraint, pg_inherits and the returned node icon): 12 passed on PostgreSQL 18.6; 9 passed and 3 skipped (PostgreSQL 18-only) on PostgreSQL 16.
    • Remove:
      • the only parent: its columns are dropped and the icon becomes icon-table;
      • one of two parents: the shared column and shared CHECK are kept, while the removed parent's own column and CHECK are dropped;
      • a CHECK the child also declared is dropped;
      • NOT NULL only required by the removed parent is dropped;
      • (PG 18) a removed parent's NOT NULL NO INHERIT leaves the table's own NOT NULL.
    • Add:
      • missing varchar(10) NOT NULL, COLLATE "C", generated column and CHECK are added before INHERIT;
      • a column the table already has gets SET NOT NULL, and only the missing column is added;
      • a NOT NULL column gets the parent's default on a table with rows;
      • two parents added in one save: a shared column gets the default of the parent that has one, and the parents are inherited in order;
      • (PG 18) a virtual generated column is added as VIRTUAL;
      • (PG 18) a parent's NOT NULL NO INHERIT isn't added to the table.
    • Each scenario fails without the change that covers it.
  • python regression/runtests.py --pkg browser.server_groups.servers.databases.schemas.tables: 526 passed on PostgreSQL 16 and 529 on PostgreSQL 18.6, 0 failed (skips: EPAS-only compound triggers, PostGIS, and the PostgreSQL 18-only scenarios on 16).
  • python regression/runtests.py --pkg tools.schema_diff: 9 passed, 0 failed, on both PostgreSQL 16 and 18.6.
  • pycodestyle --config=.pycodestyle on the changed Python files: clean.
  • Manual, remove a parent:
    1. Run CREATE TABLE parent (id bigint, name "char"); CREATE TABLE child (model "char") INHERITS (parent);
    2. Open Properties for child and remove public.parent from "Inherited from".
    3. Check that the SQL tab shows NO INHERIT followed by DROP COLUMN IF EXISTS id and DROP COLUMN IF EXISTS name.
    4. Save and reopen: only model remains, and the tree icon loses the inherits arrow.
  • Manual, add a parent back:
    1. On the same child, add public.parent to "Inherited from".
    2. Check that the SQL tab shows ADD COLUMN id bigint and ADD COLUMN name "char" before INHERIT public.parent.
    3. Save: no error, and the tree icon shows the inherits arrow.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Updating table inheritance now keeps child-table columns and CHECK constraints in sync with added or removed parents.
    • Adding a parent applies missing columns’ types, collations, defaults, nullability, and generated expressions before inheritance is applied.
    • Required NOT NULL markings are applied when adding parents and cleared when no remaining parent requires them.
    • Columns and constraints still provided by another parent are preserved when a parent is removed.
    • The table’s tree icon now reflects its updated inheritance state.

…0657

Removing a parent from 'Inherited from' removed its columns from the
Columns tab, but only NO INHERIT was run, which keeps them on the table
as local columns, so they came back on reopening. Drop them as well,
unless a remaining parent still provides them.

Adding a parent to an existing table failed with "child table is
missing column", as the parent's columns were skipped and INHERIT
requires the table to have them. Add the parent's missing columns and
CHECK constraints, using their definitions from the catalog, before
INHERIT.

The tree icon returned after saving was based on the table's properties
from before the update, so it showed the previous inheritance. Use the
table's state after the update instead.

Walkthrough

Table inheritance updates now prepare required columns and CHECK constraints before adding parents. When a parent is removed, the update drops columns and constraints no longer supplied by remaining parents and clears eligible NOT NULL markings. Explanation

Issue [#10657] requires Save to drop columns contributed only by a removed parent and retain columns still supplied by another parent. utils.py computes columns from remaining parents and _check_for_column_delete() emits drops after NO INHERIT. test_table_inherits_columns.py covers the only-parent and two-parent cases. The test also checks the saved catalog state.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The PR includes coding changes not required by the only active linked issue [#10657]. _get_inherit_changes() and the prerequisite SQL/templates implement adding parents, including missing columns, defaults, generated columns, NOT NULL, and CHECK constraints. The new tests cover these add-parent scenarios. The PR also changes the tree icon and removes inherited CHECK constraints and NOT NULL markings, which are not part of issue [#10657]'s column-removal acceptance criteria.

Resolution

Limit this PR to the removal requirement in [#10657]. Move the add-parent prerequisite queries, update-template blocks, and tests to a separate PR or link an active issue that requires them. Move the tree-icon change and the CHECK/NOT NULL cleanup changes and their tests to separate linked work unless an active issue establishes those requirements.

…en changing a table's parents. pgadmin-org#10657

Adding a parent created its generated columns as ordinary columns and
left a column the table already has nullable when the parent's is NOT
NULL, and PostgreSQL rejects INHERIT in both cases. Add generated
columns with their expression, after the columns it uses, and set NOT
NULL on such existing columns before INHERIT.

Removing a parent left its CHECK constraints on the table, as NO INHERIT
keeps them as local constraints. Drop the ones that no remaining parent
also has, as is done for the parent's columns.

🟠 Major · Preserve child-local columns when removing a parent. · utils.py:1345-1357

web/pgadmin/browser/server_groups/servers/databases/schemas/tables/utils.py:1345-1357
🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve child-local columns when removing a parent.

The column metadata query matches parent columns to child columns by name and does not inspect the child column's attislocal value. Therefore, a child-local id that has the same name as a removed parent's id receives that parent's inheritedid. The dialog sends it in columns.deleted, and _check_for_column_delete emits DROP COLUMN. PostgreSQL then removes the child-owned column and its stored values.

Keep the existing drop behavior for parent-only columns, but skip the drop when the column is locally declared on the child.

…'s parents. pgadmin-org#10657

Adding a parent with a NOT NULL column to a table that already has rows
failed, as the added column had no value for them. Add the parent's
columns with their defaults, as CREATE TABLE ... INHERITS does, so the
existing rows are filled in.

Removing a parent left NOT NULL on a column that a remaining parent
still provides but allows NULLs in, as NO INHERIT keeps it. Drop it,
except on primary key and replica identity columns.

@coderabbitai Re the outside-diff comment "Preserve child-local columns when removing a parent" (utils.py:1345-1357): I'm keeping the current behaviour on purpose.

attislocal can't tell a column the user declared on the child apart from one pgAdmin added so that INHERIT would work. When a parent is added to an existing table, this PR runs ADD COLUMN for the parent's missing columns before INHERIT, and PostgreSQL marks every column added that way as attislocal = true. For example:

CREATE TABLE parent (id bigint, name "char");
CREATE TABLE child (cid bigint);
-- In the dialog, add parent to child -> ADD COLUMN id, ADD COLUMN name, INHERIT parent
-- id and name now have attislocal = true, attinhcount = 1

If the drop skipped attislocal columns, removing parent again would leave id and name behind, and they'd reappear on reopening the dialog. That's exactly #10657, for any table whose parent was added after it was created.

So removing a parent drops the columns, CHECK constraints and NOT NULL markings it contributed, unless a remaining parent still provides them. This never happens silently: the dialog removes those columns from the Columns tab, and the SQL tab lists every DROP COLUMN before Save.

…g a table's parents. pgadmin-org#10657

On PostgreSQL 18, adding a parent with a virtual generated column added
it as an ordinary column, which INHERIT rejects. Add it as GENERATED
ALWAYS AS (...) VIRTUAL.

A parent's NOT NULL NO INHERIT is not required of the child, so do not
set NOT NULL for it when the parent is added, and do not drop the
table's own NOT NULL when that parent is removed.

…s' order. pgadmin-org#10657

When parents added together share a column the table does not have,
the column took its default only from the first parent, so it got none
when that parent has no default, and Save failed for a table with rows
if the column is NOT NULL. Use the first parent that has a default, as
CREATE TABLE ... INHERITS does.

The added and removed parents were worked out with sets, so several
parents were inherited in an arbitrary order, and a parent replaced
while others were added was never removed. Keep the order of the
'Inherited from' list, and work out both lists on every change.

Removing a parent from "Inherited from" hides its columns in the grid, but Save doesn't drop them
