Before, the data contract page explained why the contract exists like this:

Prisma ORM's current architecture compiles your schema into generated client code. The schema knowledge exists, but it is buried in code that only the client itself can interpret. Prisma ORM keeps the schema knowledge in the open. Your contract source compiles to two plain files: contract.json, a canonical JSON description of models, storage, and capabilities, and contract.d.ts, the TypeScript types derived from it. Both are deterministic: the same source always produces byte-identical output, so the artifacts can be diffed in code review, hashed for verification, and read directly by tools and AI agents.

After:

Your contract compiles to two plain files you can open and read. contract.json describes your models, how they are stored, and the database features they need. contract.d.ts holds the TypeScript types derived from it. The same source always produces the same two files, so you can read them in a code review and hand them to tools and coding agents.

The decision

This PR is the plain-language pass (C21) on orm/contract-authoring/: the data contract, Author in PSL, Author in TypeScript, the two emitted files, and the page on database features. It follows the method used on orm/reference/ (#8260, #8267): banned terms replaced, a fact check against prisma/orm at 8.0.0-rc.10 (cfccb09be2), four reader rounds with a reader and a fixer per page, and a final fact re-check. Headings and anchors are unchanged; two pages are retitled with their old anchors pinned: "The emitted artifacts" is now "contract.json and contract.d.ts", and "Capabilities" is now "Supported database features". The URLs did not change.

Three decisions a reviewer should know about:

  • The pages now answer the questions a Prisma ORM 7 reader asked first. Every round's readers were told they had used the previous major version for two years. What they asked, every time, was where datasource and generator went, whether prisma generate still exists, what plain String becomes, and how to write the join model for a many-to-many. Those answers are on the pages now, each as a sentence or a short example, with a link where another page owns the topic.
  • The word "capability" is gone from prose. It is in the banned list. The page about it says "the database features your packages support" and uses capabilities only as the name of the section in contract.json and in key names such as sql.lateral.
  • The config import stays prisma/config. The rc.10 source tree imports definePrismaConfig from @prisma/cli-engine, but the published CLI is newer than the tree and every other page in the docs uses prisma/config. Two checkers changed it and I reverted both.

What the fact checks corrected

The first check found about forty corrections. The ones that change what a reader would do:

  • The client only logs a warning when the database marker does not match the contract. prisma db verify is what fails. The pages had said queries stop.
  • storageHash covers the storage layout only, not models and relations.
  • Contract files live in src/prisma/, which is what prisma orm init writes. The pages had prisma/.
  • An enum without @@type gets its storage type from its member values. A pack not listed in the config does not raise CONFIG.MISSING_EXTENSION_PACKS; nothing in rc.10 raises that code.
  • A relation named by a string in the TypeScript builder is caught when prisma contract emit builds the contract, not by the compiler.
  • SQLite reports lateral and enums as false rather than leaving them out, and the query-time error code is ORM.CAPABILITY_MISSING.
  • contract.d.ts has <Name>Output and <Name>Input types per type block, not per model.
  • The TypeScript builder does have a native PostgreSQL enum helper, nativeEnum with pg.enum. The page had said it did not.

The final re-check after the reader rounds found twelve more, most of them claims the rounds had added or sharpened:

  • contract.json carries its generated-file notice in a _generated entry at the end, not as a comment at the top. roots has one entry per table, so variants that share a base model's table add none. The client's contractJson option is typed unknown, so TypeScript never compares the two files; the CI check is what catches drift.
  • npx prisma migration plan works offline: it compares two contracts and writes a migration, without a database connection.
  • The shared uuidString helper stores a character(36) column, not text. The package-level field export has only column, generated, and namedType; the full helper set comes from the callback argument.
  • SQLite reports false for some sql keys, not most, and has no scalarList key at all. ORM.CAPABILITY_MISSING is raised by the ORM client as well as the SQL query builder.

Every checker also changed the config import to @prisma/cli-engine, because that is all the rc.10 source tree has. I reverted each time: the published prisma package (8.0.0-rc.15 today) exports ./config, and the rest of the docs use it. The PSL page now says prisma orm init writes "a config like this" rather than exactly this.

Three claims the checkers could not settle from the source, left as written: what npm create prisma@latest scaffolds (that package is not in the tree), that the MongoDB TypeScript builder requires _id (only the PSL interpreter checks it), and that no column-type check runs across a relation (the claim rests on the absence of one).

Also on this branch, from a note Will sent while this ran: the Prisma ORM 7 to 8 guide was not reachable from the nav. The ORM section's Introduction now links both upgrade guides after Coming from Prisma ORM 7, the v7 guides nav gained an "Upgrade Prisma ORM" section, and a sidebar bug is fixed: the version-filtered trees are rebuilt from copies, so folders in the Guides tree were compared by object identity and never opened for their own page. Folders now match by id. The version switcher hides itself on the guide pages, which render with the ORM sidebar.

Also from a note: a new Supported databases page beside Release status. PostgreSQL is a release candidate, MongoDB is in early access, and MySQL, MariaDB, SQLite, SQL Server, and CockroachDB are coming soon, with one paragraph on what each label means and how to ask for a database. It replaces the database section of prisma/orm#25843 for Prisma ORM 8. The plain-language checker skips link targets, pinned heading anchors, href attributes, and the front-matter url line, none of which are prose. cspell.json gains ksuid.

How it was checked

  • Four reader rounds, five fresh Opus readers per round (one per page), each followed by a fixer with the shared and page conventions and the rc.10 source. Round one allowed the pages to grow for the missing answers; rounds two to four ran with a "no longer than now" budget and round three preferred cutting.
  • Two fact checks, one checker per page or page pair each time, claim by claim against the source.
  • check-plain.sh, cspell, and the docs link check pass on every page.

What a reviewer should know

  • Total length went from 1,018 lines to about 1,075. The TypeScript builder page grew most, for the field-helper table, indexes, composite keys, and the pgvector config the readers asked for. The artifacts page shrank.
  • Open questions with no answer in the source, so the pages say nothing: whether @default works on a pg.enum field, what a reader should rewrite a lateralJoin() query as on a database without it, and where a pack other than pgvector documents the name it declares for the types block.
  • The reader and checker reports are in this branch's history at 40c5394; the last commit removes them.

Alternatives considered

  • Keep "Capabilities" as the page title and use the word in prose. Rejected: it is on the banned list because readers guessed at it, and the page reads fine without it.
  • Split the TypeScript builder page into a tutorial and a reference. The round-three reader suggested it. Rejected for now: the page holds at 318 lines with a plain example first and the advanced material after, which is what the split would have bought.

… checked against rc.10 (part one)

The data contract, the artifacts page, and the PSL page. The client only logs a warning when the database marker does not match the contract; prisma db verify is what fails. storageHash covers the storage layout only. Contract files live in src/prisma/. An enum without @@type gets its storage type from its member values. A type from a pack not listed in the config fails with CONFIG.MISSING_EXTENSION_PACKS. The artifacts page is now titled by the two files it describes.

The plain-language checker now skips link targets, pinned heading anchors, and href attributes, which are not prose.

… checked against rc.10 (part two)

The TypeScript builder and the capabilities pages, plus the three checker reports. The capabilities page is now titled Supported database features, with its old heading anchors pinned. A relation named by a string is caught when prisma contract emit builds the contract, not at compile time. SQLite reports lateral and enums as false rather than leaving them out. The query-time error code ORM.CAPABILITY_MISSING is named. The CONFIG.MISSING_EXTENSION_PACKS claim on the PSL page is gone, since nothing in rc.10 raises it.

Five readers coming from Prisma ORM 7, one per page, and a fixer per page. The pages now say where datasource and generator went, that prisma generate is gone, which table prisma db sign writes and when to run it, that @db.VarChar became VarChar(...), how the many-to-many join model is matched, what a variant inherits, the field helpers for common column types, how to add indexes and composite keys in the TypeScript builder, that rel.belongsTo alone creates no foreign key, and what to do on ORM.CAPABILITY_MISSING. contract.d.ts has Output and Input types per type block, not per model.

The pages now carry the everyday loop (edit, contract emit, migration plan, db migrate) and say that applying a migration records the marker itself, so db sign is only for a database that already matches. The TypeScript page's prose matches its examples on where rel comes from and on constraints.index taking a list, and it shows nativeEnum with pg.enum instead of claiming the builder has no native enum helper. The PSL page shows temporal.updatedAt(), a native_enum block, the db key in the config, and links the scalar type table. The capabilities page names the database package once and explains MongoDB without contradicting the rule.

Prefer-cutting round. The artifacts page lost its executionHash row and half its contract.json tour. The TypeScript page's complete example has no extension pack, uses {} for the options, and a date-only column is field.column with pg/date-temporal@1. The PSL page shows one-to-one, names the plain scalar column types, and defines discriminator at first use. The capabilities page says contract emit never connects to the database and separates the emit-time check from the query-time keys. The data-contract page carries the connection string in its config example.

Last wording round, no page longer than before. The TypeScript page's native enum snippet takes field and model from the callback like the rest of the page, names the foreign-key action values, and says there is no auto-increment helper in rc.10. The PSL page names the native PostgreSQL types, says a mixed enum throws PSL_ENUM_CANNOT_INFER_TYPE, and explains // use prisma-8 at its first appearance. The artifacts page opens with what changed since schema.prisma and lists when a database is signed by hand.

…der of the current page

The ORM section's Introduction now links the Prisma ORM 7 to 8 and 6 to 8 guides after Coming from Prisma ORM 7. Those pages then render with the ORM sidebar, so the version switcher, which follows the path, hides itself there instead of showing a Guides switcher under an ORM header.

The sidebar compared folders by object identity to decide which one holds the current page, but the version-filtered trees are rebuilt from copies, so no folder in the Guides tree ever opened for its own page. Folders now match by id as well.

Twelve corrections after four wording rounds. contract.json carries its generated notice at the end rather than at the top; roots has one entry per table, so variants sharing a base table add none; the runtime's contractJson option is typed unknown, so TypeScript does not compare the two files; migration plan works offline; the shared uuidString helper stores a character(36) column; SQLite reports false for some sql keys, not most, and has no scalarList key; ORM.CAPABILITY_MISSING is raised by the ORM client too; the enum bullet on the PSL page says what changed. The prisma/config import stays: the published prisma package exports it.

Align the ORM 8 SQLite guidance with the support table.

The ORM 8 contract page lists @prisma/orm-sqlite, while the ORM 8 supported-databases page marks SQLite “Coming soon” and states that no ORM 8 library exists yet. This gives readers conflicting setup guidance and may direct them to select unsupported SQLite. Remove @prisma/orm-sqlite from the ORM 8 package list until the support table documents SQLite support.
