🎯 What: The updateDossierUI function in extension/sidepanel/sidepanel.js used to build its HTML output from untrusted string interpolation via renderDossierListHTML and assigned it directly to listEl.innerHTML. This created a Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability.

⚠️ Risk: If a malicious user or scraped content contained untrusted tags (e.g. <script>, <img>, etc) that managed to bypass the escaping or if the CSP allowed execution, malicious scripts could execute within the extension context. Using innerHTML with dynamic user content is inherently risky, especially in extensions.

🛡️ Solution: The updateDossierUI has been heavily refactored to remove the usage of innerHTML entirely for dynamically constructed content. Instead, it utilizes secure DOM API methods (document.createElement and textContent) to construct the entire UI for the dossier list. This inherently sanitizes output and provides a robust defense against XSS. Tests have been confirmed to pass following the implementation of this change.

This is not an XSS: renderDossierListHTML passes every interpolated value through escapeHtml, including the data-dossier-id attribute values, and escapeHtml escapes both quote characters. Rebuilding the list with DOM calls adds 70 lines without changing what can be rendered.

Closing as part of triaging the open PRs against #109, which restructures the extension (it removes the .cjs twins, renames test/test-*.js to .mjs, and rewrites the crawler and side panel). It is up to date with main as of ee79db2.
