Adds two options. Both keep content out of the CloudFormation templates (1 MB limit):

  • appSync.uploadSchemaToS3: GraphQLSchema uses DefinitionS3Location.
  • appSync.uploadCodeToS3: JS resolvers and pipeline functions use CodeS3Location. Code with substitutions (an intrinsic function) and VTL stay inline.

How it works:

  • sls package writes each file to the package's appsync/ directory as <name>-<sha256>.<ext>.
  • sls deploy uploads them to <deploymentPrefix>/<service>/<stage>/appsync/ in the deployment bucket (the bucket's SSE/KMS options apply; SSE-C does not, as CloudFormation cannot read it).
  • A file name changes only with its content, so CloudFormation updates a resource only then. The Framework never prunes these files, so a rollback finds the previous version.

Addresses #746 (with the deployment bucket, which provider.deploymentBucket can set).

Tested: unit, CFN synthesis (examples/upload-to-s3), and real deploys of two production-size APIs. On one (570 resolvers and functions, 118 distinct code files) the largest nested stack went from 664 KB to 136 KB and the root template from 905 KB to 296 KB.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added optional S3 uploads for AppSync schemas and JavaScript resolver and pipeline code. When enabled, deployment templates reference the uploaded files; content-based filenames help preserve files for rollbacks.
    • Uploads use the configured deployment bucket and its encryption settings.
  • Documentation
    • Documented the new upload options, their defaults, and how files are packaged and deployed.

📝 Walkthrough

The plugin adds options to upload AppSync schemas and JavaScript resolver or pipeline code to S3. Compiled resources reference content-hashed files, which packaging stages and deployment uploads to the configured deployment bucket.

Changes: AppSync S3 uploads

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure and generate S3 locations
src/types/*, src/validation.ts, src/resources/Api.ts, src/resources/Schema.ts, src/resources/Resolver.ts, src/resources/PipelineFunction.ts, src/types/cloudFormation.ts, src/__tests__/schema.test.ts, src/__tests__/validation/base.test.ts
The configuration accepts uploadSchemaToS3 and uploadCodeToS3. Schema and string-based JavaScript code can use content-hashed S3 locations; other code remains inline.
Stage and upload S3 files
package.json, src/aws-client-factory.ts, src/types/serverless.d.ts, src/index.ts, src/__tests__/s3Files.test.ts
Hooks stage AppSync files before packaging and upload them after artifact upload. Uploads use the deployment bucket, configured encryption settings, and batches of up to 20 files.
Example, documentation, and integration coverage
doc/general-config.md, examples/upload-to-s3/*, e2e/upload-to-s3.e2e.test.ts
The example enables schema and code uploads. Documentation describes the options and deployment paths. Tests check packaged content and resource locations.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 4c555

The S3 staging concern does not block deployment. Confirm the configuration links work before merging; the remaining upload-body suggestion is optional.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 4c555

Content-hashed filenames, service-and-stage namespacing and awaited uploads limit deployment risk. No new exploitable security condition was established. Read permissions, encryption-key access and prebuilt-package configuration changes remain unverified, so deployment and rollback guarantees are not fully established.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A principal able to replace a referenced object could influence schema or resolver content consumed by a later deployment or rollback. Identical JavaScript content can share one object across multiple resources within the service and stage. Wider exposure depends on bucket permissions, which were not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The uploader uses the existing Framework-aware credential resolver and configured region. That resolver already falls back to the default credential chain in specified failure cases; this PR reuses it for S3 writes rather than introducing a separate credential source. Current schema/code producers supply fixed filename labels and extensions.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — A missing staging directory fails before upload. Uploads run in awaited batches of at most 20, and errors are not converted into success. The missing-directory test verifies rejection without an S3 send; actual Framework ordering before stack use remains unverified.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Validate the deployment reader's GetObject and KMS decrypt permissions for supported custom-bucket configurations, and document retention requirements for rollback. Establish whether prebuilt packages require unchanged configuration; enforce or persist target identity if configuration changes are supported.

Correct the large-schema section link.

The ### Large schemas heading generates #large-schemas, not #Large-schemas. Change the fragment so the configuration link reaches the new section. (github.com)

A large API exceeds the 1 MB CloudFormation template limit with its inline schema and JS code. uploadSchemaToS3 and uploadCodeToS3 write them to the package, upload them to the deployment bucket under content-hash keys, and reference them with DefinitionS3Location and CodeS3Location.

Read the file as a Buffer, not as UTF-8.

fs.readFileSync(..., 'utf8') decodes and re-encodes the content. The content is written as UTF-8, so this is lossless for valid text. A raw Buffer is simpler and avoids the round trip. This is optional.

Update the `readFileSync` call in the file-writing flow to read the content as a
Buffer by omitting the UTF-8 encoding argument, and preserve the existing path
construction and write behavior.

Fix the Large-APIs link fragments.

The heading ### Large APIs produces the fragment #large-apis. The lowercase form satisfies markdownlint MD051. The existing #Schema links use the same pattern, so the repository may accept this. Change the fragment to keep the lint clean.
