Exchanges list says when it couldn't load, and counts stay on screen - #407
Two follow-ups to #406, for what still shows on app-dev.
A list that times out says so
A database timeout now answers 504 DATABASE_TIMED_OUT (DatabaseTimeoutMiddleware), where it used to be a bare 500. This is PostgreSQL only; SQL Server and MySQL still answer 500.
The admin UI no longer retries a 504. It used to retry 3 times, so a 30s timeout kept a list loading for 2 minutes and then showed "No exchanges match".
The Exchanges list shows LoadError instead: "Couldn't load the exchanges", the reason, and Try again. While it does, live refresh waits for Try again rather than rerunning the query every 15s.
Counts stay on screen
app-dev runs 2 app copies, and each counts a slow view for itself. So an answer from a copy still counting could follow one from a copy that had finished, and the number blinked out. A later answer that is still counting now keeps the earlier number, and the chart keeps its bars.
Checked locally with the database limit lowered to 8s. The Processing list showed the error after 8.4s, from one request. Failed kept its number through answers that left it out.

Summary
Summary
Added middleware that converts PostgreSQL database timeouts to HTTP 504 with code DATABASE_TIMED_OUT. Other exceptions remain unhandled by this middleware.
Updated query retry behavior so 504 responses are not retried.
Updated the Exchanges page to show a load error with a Try again action. It stops automatic list refresh after a failed load with no data.
Added structural sharing for exchange breakdowns so previously counted status totals and chart buckets remain visible while a later response is still counting.
Risk
risk:medium. The change affects API error handling and UI query behavior. The timeout detector depends on a DbException wrapping a TimeoutException; SQL Server and MySQL timeouts remain 500 responses.
Security-sensitive areas
The request pipeline and error logging changed. The middleware logs the exception, request method, and path. No authentication or authorization behavior changed.
Test coverage impact
Added integration and UI tests for timeout handling, retry behavior, retained counts, and list error recovery. Test execution results were not provided.
Deployment and operations
No database migration is indicated. The new 504 behavior applies to matching PostgreSQL timeouts. SQL Server and MySQL behavior is unchanged. The user can retry a failed list request with Try again.
The API returns HTTP 504 for recognized database timeouts when the response has not started. The client avoids retrying 504 errors, shows a retryable exchanges load error, and retains selected breakdown counts and chart data during refreshes.

Summary
API timeout response SW.Bitween.Api/Services/DatabaseTimeoutMiddleware.cs, SW.Bitween.Web/Startup.cs, SW.Bitween.IntegrationTests/Tests/DatabaseTimeoutTests.cs, docs/api-reference.md
The middleware recognizes a database exception followed by a timeout in the exception chain and returns HTTP 504 with DATABASE_TIMED_OUT if the response has not started. The pipeline registration, integration test, and API reference cover this response.
The page retains prior status counts when new counts are nullish. If a result is still counting and has no buckets, it retains the prior chart data. The tests check that known counts remain visible during refresh.
The client does not retry HTTP 504 errors. When exchanges loading fails without data, the page shows a load error instead of empty results and provides a retry action. Tests and operations documentation cover the behavior.
Resolve the hosted timeout test mismatch and the retained-data navigation defects before merging. Timeout responses also need to preserve security headers and consistently recognize PostgreSQL statement timeouts.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
The classifier accepts any DbException, although the new API reference says SQL Server and MySQL still return 500. If either driver's timeout contains an inner TimeoutException, this middleware will return 504 for that provider too.
Those providers return a different status and retry behavior from the documented contract.
This can occur when: A SQL Server or MySQL command times out with a DbException-to-TimeoutException chain.
Update the existing hosted timeout test to expect 504 and DATABASE_TIMED_OUT.
A_read_that_does_not_ask_keeps_the_usual_limit sends /api/slowreads/3 without a Prefer header. BackgroundRequestMiddleware passes that request straight to next, so the database timeout reaches DatabaseTimeoutMiddleware, registered at Startup.cs:1093. If the timeout exception matches the shape that middleware detects, the response becomes 504 with DATABASE_TIMED_OUT. The assertion at line 65 still expects InternalServerError, so this test can fail. This PR does not update that file.
Updating this test also covers the middleware registration. Without that registration, the timeout is not converted to 504, so the updated assertion fails. A separate hosted test would exercise the same path.

shouldRetryQuery skips retries for any 504 response, because it checks error.status. The existing 504 assertions use only the DATABASE_TIMED_OUT code. A change that keyed the rule on error.code would still pass those tests, and other 504 responses would then retry.

Add a 504 assertion in the tests for shouldRetryQuery using an ApiRequestError
code other than DATABASE_TIMED_OUT, and verify it returns false. Keep the
existing timeout-code assertion unchanged.
The test keeps a number once it's in, while a later answer is still counting it returns buckets: [] in both responses. It checks only the status buttons. keepCounted also keeps the previous chart buckets when a counting answer has none, so removing that retention would leave the chart empty and this test would still pass.
Without a time filter, the page loads the chart from a separate breakdown query with range: "24h". Use request parameters to tell the two calls apart. Then return populated buckets for the chart query in the first response and assert that the Exchange volume over time region stays visible after the counting response.

Add a fake-timer test that stops list refetching during a load error.
The 504 test at ExchangesList.test.tsx:448-474 uses real timers and does not count list requests. It finishes before the 15-second live-refresh interval can fire. If the error guard at ExchangesPage.tsx:119 were removed, this test would still pass while the failed list query kept refetching.
Add a test that uses fake timers, as the existing live-refresh tests do. Configure user-event to advance those fake timers so the Try again click still works. In the test:

Restore the security headers after the timeout response clears the response.
Response.Clear() removes all response headers. Startup sets X-Frame-Options, X-Content-Type-Options, Referrer-Policy, X-Permitted-Cross-Domain-Policies, and Content-Security-Policy before this middleware runs. A recognized database timeout therefore returns a 504 without these headers. Nothing reapplies them after Clear().

Classify SQLSTATE 57014 as a database timeout.

Keep retained counts out of the Next total while a status is still counting.
While a status is still being counted, keepCounted keeps its earlier number. ExchangesPage then uses that number as the exact total, so Next can stay disabled on a full page. Leaving this one. Bars are kept only while an app copy that hasn't finished the histogram is answering, so they're at most a minute or two old. The server already serves a kept histogram for up to 5 minutes for a moving window (ViewKey rounds "since" to 5 minutes). Selecting a bar filters the list to exactly that bar's interval, so the list always matches what was picked. Trimming bars that start before the new window would only make the first bar blink out.
A_read_that_does_not_ask_keeps_the_usual_limit (HttpTests) now expects 504 with DATABASE_TIMED_OUT. BackgroundRequestTests passes 11/11.
The middleware no longer calls Response.Clear(), so the security and CORS headers set before the endpoint ran stay. Only a stale Content-Length is dropped.
IsDatabaseTimeout also treats a DbException with SqlState 57014 as a timeout, except inside an OperationCanceledException, which is a cancellation the caller asked for. The test checks real exceptions for Command Timeout, statement_timeout and a cancelled token.
Next falls back to the full-page rule while the breakdown is still counting, since the total may be a kept number.
Tests: a 504 with another code isn't retried. keepCounted has unit tests for kept counts and chart buckets. The list-error test uses fake timers and checks that no list request is made in 15s.
Keeping as is: when a refresh fails, the list keeps showing its rows (isError && !data). This is the same decision as the dashboard in #404 and #405: the last good data stays, and the Live control's "Refreshed … ago" tooltip shows its age. A first load that fails, with nothing to show, gets LoadError.
The chart-buckets comment is answered in its thread.

@hamzahalq I inspected 806d91a6. The patch covers the reported fixes:
The middleware preserves existing headers and removes the stale Content-Length.
Timeout detection includes PostgreSQL 57014 and excludes an enclosing OperationCanceledException.
Next uses the full-page rule while the breakdown is counting.
The tests cover the updated 504 response, header preservation, timeout classification, count and chart retention, and the 15-second polling pause.
Keeping the last successful rows after a background-refresh failure is consistent with the stated design. I am not requesting a change to isError && !data. A failed first load still displays LoadError.
I inspected the source and test changes but did not run the tests. The reported 11/11 result remains author-provided.

Do not require a background-refresh failure to replace those rows with LoadError; the intended design uses the Live control's "Refreshed … ago" tooltip to show data age.

Two follow-ups to #406, for what still shows on app-dev.
A list that times out says so
504 DATABASE_TIMED_OUT(DatabaseTimeoutMiddleware), where it used to be a bare 500. This is PostgreSQL only; SQL Server and MySQL still answer 500.LoadErrorinstead: "Couldn't load the exchanges", the reason, and Try again. While it does, live refresh waits for Try again rather than rerunning the query every 15s.Counts stay on screen
app-dev runs 2 app copies, and each counts a slow view for itself.
