feat(decoding): add caller-owned streaming workspace decoder - #583
Conversation
- WorkspaceDecoder (feature caller-workspace) decodes a zstd stream chunk by chunk inside one caller-supplied byte slice and never allocates; workspace_bytes(max_window) sizes it so the caller can admit the memory before decoding - every step is bounded by the frame window, the total output and a work budget charged before the work it pays for; limit refusals, malformed input, unsupported dictionary frames and truncation are distinct errors - decoding reuses the shared core: the literals stage takes its buffer through a ByteScratch trait (Vec for the owned decoders), and under the feature the entropy tables keep their build scratch inline and the ring can borrow memory; with the feature off the other decoders build as before - single-segment frames decode linearly into the workspace, others through a ring; Raw blocks stream into the window without staging - a compressed block whose content exceeds the frame's block maximum is now refused on every path (RFC 8878 3.1.1.2.4), as upstream does; decode_all accepted one - zero-allocation integration test, wasm32-wasip1 test run, fuzz target, stream-verify example and a decode-loop harness; CI covers the feature on host, no_std, wasm and fuzz Closes #582
- the FSE table build borrows the table's fields one by one, so the spread scratch is lent instead of moved out and back per build (with the caller-workspace feature that move copied 528 bytes twice) - InlineVec keeps its stored length apart from the counted one, so a read is one load, as with a Vec, instead of min(len, N) per access Part of #582
- read_probabilities refuses a zero-probability run that outgrows the alphabet as soon as it does, as upstream's FSE_readNCount stops at charnum > maxSV1; it used to collect zeros until the input ran out and then report a bit-read error - with every builder now bounded before it appends, InlineVec is a plain bounded buffer with one length: the counted-past-capacity mode cost an extra counter and branch on every append in the table builders Part of #582

- Around line 657-661: Implement Send for WorkspaceDecoder, whose NonNull<u8>
field prevents automatic derivation. Add a justified unsafe Send implementation
based on the exclusive workspace access represented by _region, so moving the
decoder transfers that access to the new thread.
Review comments at @zstd/src/fse/fse_decoder.rs:
- Around line 6-12: In `build_from_probabilities`, reject inputs longer than the

returning `FSETableError::TooManySymbols` with the input length; keep valid
inputs on the existing path.

- Line 13: Update the crate-level documentation near the `decoding::workspace`
reference so it remains valid when the `caller-workspace` feature is disabled;
use plain code formatting for the module name instead of an intra-doc link, or
gate the linked text on that feature.

- build_from_probabilities checks the probability count against the alphabet before copying it; with caller-workspace the store is bounded, so 300 probabilities panicked instead of returning TooManySymbols (regression test included) - WorkspaceDecoder is Send: its raw window pointer lives inside the exclusively borrowed workspace; a compile-time test pins it - the block-maximum test pins ContentPastBlockMaximum on decode_all and StreamingDecoder instead of any error - crate and decoding docs name the workspace module as code, so the docs build without the feature - taiki-e/install-action pinned to a commit SHA in CI and release
