Lowering Luna's reasoning effort changes the router's quality, cost and latency tradeoff. This adds a collector for Luna low on the same 975 BBEH final questions, reuses the saved Luna-medium and Sol-medium answers, and replays all nine original illustrated policies without retraining or choosing new thresholds.

Luna low reached 44.3% accuracy versus 55.6% at medium, cost $5.52 versus $12.23 per 10,000 answers, and had mean request time 9.04 versus 22.01 seconds. The docs include LoRA and embedding-policy results, paired family uncertainty, token accounting and the cross-day latency limitation. They distinguish answer time from router overhead and include CPU-only replay and fresh collection commands.

The response receipts, source snapshots and report are appended to the public Hugging Face dataset under a new prefix, with an immutable release pin in the example. Existing study artifacts and answer-model defaults are unchanged. Paid calls require --execute.

Validation:

  • 19 collector/analyzer tests passed on Modal CPU; independent collection, ML and documentation reviews found no blockers.
  • Fresh public downloads: all 155 original core files and four new result artifacts verified; all 975 answers replayed to the identical report hash, with zero new model calls.
  • ruff check --config pyproject.toml --select E4,E7,E9,F effort test_effort_collection.py test_effort_analysis.py passed (explicit original rule set; executed acquisition source stays byte-identical).
  • git diff --check passed.

Review in Change Stack →

Walkthrough

The change adds tooling to collect Luna-low answers for 975 questions and compare them with saved Luna-medium and Sol-medium answers. It documents measured accuracy, cost, and latency, and reports results for fixed router policies.

Changes: Luna effort comparison

Layer / File(s) Summary

Validated comparison and fixed-policy replay
examples/train-a-router/effort/analyze.py, examples/train-a-router/test_effort_analysis.py
Adds artifact and collection validation, response grading, paired and task-level metrics, fixed-policy replay, and report generation. Tests cover accounting, grading, bootstrap comparisons, replay, and manifest validation.

The change adds a Luna-low comparison and replay tooling. The only issues found are a README baseline ambiguity and a garbled CLI error message, so it is mergeable with a quick wording fix.

Explanation

The title "feat(examples): compare Luna low reasoning on the router workload" matches the main change. The PR adds a collector and analyzer that compare Luna low reasoning effort against saved Luna medium and Sol medium answers on the 975 BBEH final questions for the train-a-router example. The title is concise, specific, and follows a conventional commit style. It does not cover the supporting tests, the release pin, or the dataset publication, which is expected for a title.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 11.76% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 68 functions across 4 files. (3 skipped: 3 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Minor · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Fix the missing spaces in the deadline validation message.

When --deadline-seconds is out of range, the CLI prints Deadline must be601..5400seconds. The text has no spaces around the numbers. Other strings in this PR show the same problem, for example Rolling16 requests in the run docstring on Line 202. Restore the spaces in this user-facing error message.

# Lower Luna’s reasoning effort

**Luna low cost 54.9% less than Luna medium, with an 11.3-point accuracy loss.** Its mean answer time was 9.0 seconds versus 22.0 seconds. We compared all **975 BBEH test questions**, reusing the existing medium recordings; the runs happened on different days, so provider load also affects the latency comparison.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Specify that the 11.3-point loss is versus Luna medium.

Line 9 defines Accuracy loss relative to always using Sol, and the table gives Luna low a 36.5-point loss on that baseline. The 11.3-point figure and its interval are the Luna-low-versus-Luna-medium difference. State that baseline in both places to avoid conflicting interpretations. (huggingface.co)
