Summary

This change validates action requests and file operations across the WebGUI so state changes use explicit request data and clear operation boundaries.

Why This Exists

Several WebGUI actions accepted incomplete or ambiguous request state. This could produce incorrect lifecycle, plugin, VM, or file-manager behavior.

Resolution

The affected handlers now validate methods, action state, identifiers, confirmation values, and file offsets before they perform changes. Valid requests keep their existing workflows.

Reviewer Considerations

  • Review request validation in the Docker, plugin, VM, and file-manager handlers.
  • Confirm that upload continuation chunks write at the requested offset.
  • Confirm that valid existing requests keep their current behavior.
  • The remote manifest work is intentionally excluded and remains on a separate local branch.
  • This PR contains production changes only.

Behavior Changes

  • Invalid request methods and incomplete confirmation data are rejected.
  • Upload continuation chunks are written at the requested offset.
  • Valid requests continue through their existing handlers.

Implementation Summary

  • OS-906: protect pending operation markers.
  • OS-907: validate downgrade state.
  • OS-908: require POST lifecycle requests.
  • OS-909: validate VM mutation inputs.
  • OS-910: bound template file operations.
  • OS-915: require confirmed update requests.
  • OS-916: isolate upload state.
  • OS-917: use upload identifiers and seek continuation offsets.
  • OS-918: bind resize controls to server state.

Related work items: OS-906, OS-907, OS-908, OS-909, OS-910, OS-915, OS-916, OS-917, OS-918.

Verification

  • PHP lint passed for the changed production files on the current head.
  • Git diff checks passed.
  • The last complete QA run passed on a managed QA VM running 7.4.0-beta.3 with declared storage before the branch was narrowed.
  • A fresh QA run for this exact head is still pending.
  • The final branch diff contains only production files.

Risk

Low; valid requests preserve existing behavior, and invalid requests stop before the state-changing operation.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • File uploads now provide more reliable progress and cancellation, with improved cleanup after completion or failure.
    • Bulk container rebuilds ask for confirmation and proceed only when updates are available.
    • Virtual machine disk resizing checks the selected disk and requested capacity before applying changes.
    • Plugin downgrades validate the previous system files and report whether recovery was successful.
    • Virtual machine disk and snapshot actions now report errors for invalid requests.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Invalid container names and requests to update multiple containers without confirmation are rejected.
    • Plugin and virtual machine actions validate submitted requests before processing them.

Walkthrough

Docker, plugin, and VM handlers change how they accept request data and validate actions. File uploads use server-issued IDs and session-bound state, with checks for targets, chunk offsets, and cancellation.

Changes

Docker updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Docker update requests
emhttp/plugins/dynamix.docker.manager/include/CreateDocker.php, emhttp/plugins/dynamix.docker.manager/include/Events.php, emhttp/plugins/dynamix.docker.manager/javascript/docker.js
Docker handlers require POST and validate request parameters. Container updates validate names and require confirmation for multiple containers. The client routes container updates through updateContainer and confirms rebuilds before submitting POST requests.

Plugin downgrade

Layer / File(s) Summary
Downgrade authorization and boot-file switch
emhttp/plugins/dynamix.plugin.manager/include/Downgrade.php
The handler uses a short-lived, single-use session nonce and requires confirmation. It validates the version and previous boot files, stages current files, and attempts restoration if a rename fails.

Pending plugin actions

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pending marker requests
emhttp/plugins/dynamix.plugin.manager/include/ShowPlugins.php, emhttp/plugins/dynamix.plugin.manager/Plugins.page
Pending-plugin requests use POST. The handler validates plugin names and target paths before writing markers.

Virtual machine actions

Layer / File(s) Summary
Request selection and validation
emhttp/plugins/dynamix.vm.manager/include/VMajax.php
The endpoint selects request data by method, limits non-POST requests to listed read-only actions, and adds validators for storage paths, domain XML, sizes, and template paths.
VM disk resize
emhttp/plugins/dynamix.vm.manager/VMMachines.page, emhttp/plugins/dynamix.vm.manager/include/VMMachines.php, emhttp/plugins/dynamix.vm.manager/include/VMajax.php
The resize form submits a device and CSRF token. The handlers resolve the disk path and capacity from VM state before resizing.

File uploads

Layer / File(s) Summary
Upload state and chunk handling
emhttp/plugins/dynamix/include/Control.php
The endpoint validates upload targets and IDs, binds state to the session, checks chunk offsets and data, finalizes completed files, and handles session-checked stop requests.
Browser upload flow
emhttp/plugins/dynamix/Browse.page
The browser carries the server-issued upload ID across chunks and uses it for cancellation, errors, and stop requests.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 09053

The new request and resource checks improve protection, but the upload lifecycle introduces concurrency and failed-write behavior that can block operations or hide unsuccessful uploads. The potential impact is on the receiving server; effective access controls and runtime limits remain unconfirmed.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new upload protocol uses opposing lock orders. Continuation holds the session before acquiring upload state; stop holds upload state before acquiring the session. Concurrent requests for the same session and upload can form a circular wait with a locking session handler, blocking cleanup and occupying request workers. This lock coupling did not exist in the base upload protocol.
  • Medium · reliability · inferred: The new upload state machine does not reliably terminate failed writes. A zero-byte fwrite result repeats without progress while locks remain held. A false result produces an ordinary response with complete=false rather than a write error; on the last chunk, the browser can advance or finish without an error and request deletion of the incomplete target. Compared with the base error-and-cleanup path, this weakens request-resource containment and externally visible failure reporting.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated effects are host-local privileged operations: VM disk changes beneath /mnt, uploads beneath /mnt or /boot, and boot-set replacement. The new upload availability concerns require access to the upload routes and, for the lock-order case, a known upload identifier and concurrent session requests. Repetition could occupy shared request workers; unauthenticated reachability, worker-pool size, and any tenant boundary are not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A concurrent upload can hold the session while waiting for upload state, while stop holds that state and waits for the same session. Separately, a destination write returning zero can keep the new write loop active without progress. These paths threaten request availability under concurrency or storage failure; neither has been demonstrated through runtime execution.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — POST gates and confirmations constrain request shape; session matching constrains upload ownership; libvirt-derived disk identity constrains resize targets. The upload client sends a CSRF header and the resize form includes a token, but token presence does not establish enforcement. Secure.php supplies input sanitizers rather than authentication or role checks.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Upload expiry uses a nonblocking state lock, and target identity checks reduce unintended deletion. These controls do not resolve conflicting session/state lock order. Failed-write responses also lack an explicit error transition, while the browser retains a final-chunk path that finishes without requiring complete=true.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Give upload operations one consistent lock order and minimize session-lock duration after deriving ownership. Define explicit failed, cancelled, and completed terminal states with bounded write progress, identity-safe cleanup, and client completion only after server-confirmed completion.

🟠 Major · Bind cancellation cleanup to the checked upload inode. · Control.php:74-78

🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Bind cancellation cleanup to the checked upload inode.

The authorized cancel and stop paths check the target's device and inode, then call remove_upload_state. That helper releases the state lock and unlinks $file by pathname. A local actor with write access to the target's parent can replace that pathname between the check and unlink, so the privileged request can delete a different file. The state lock does not protect the parent directory, and mode 0600 does not prevent replacement of its directory entry.

Keep incomplete uploads in a private staging location and store that staging path in the upload state. On cancel, stop, or stale cleanup, delete the staging file. Publish it to the requested target only after completion. Adding another pathname check or merely holding the existing state lock does not remove this race.

🟡 Minor · Allow UTF-8 upload basenames. · Control.php:46-50

emhttp/plugins/dynamix/include/Control.php:46-50
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Allow UTF-8 upload basenames.

Browse.page sends file.name to Control.php. For an existing upload directory, validname(rawurldecode(file)) accepts café.txt, but valid_upload_target() rejects it because its regular expression permits only ASCII characters. This blocks a normal browser upload. Remove only the new character filter and retain the existing path and basename checks.

Suggested fix
-  return $file && $base === basename($file) && preg_match('/\\A[A-Za-z0-9][A-Za-z0-9._ -]{0,254}\\z/D',$base) ? $file : '';
+  return $file && $base === basename($file) ? $file : '';
