GraphicsState had no clip and parseChunk had no case for W or W*, so a text chunk never knew whether anything could be seen of it. A figure placed many times under small windows -- a tiled or cropped figure, an ordinary export shape -- therefore had every copy of its text extracted, not just the one on the page. Track the clip as the bounding box of the clipping path in page space, save and restore it with the rest of the graphics state, compose it with a form's own /BBox on Do, and mark a text chunk whose box is wholly outside it. Marking only: whether to drop such a chunk is the consumer's decision, and this is deliberately not the hidden-text flag, which means low contrast and has its own consumers. The discard rule is conservative. Only a chunk separated from the clip by more than 1e-3 pt is marked; one that touches the clip or crosses it keeps its text, and a degenerate box is never marked. Non-rectangular paths are approximated by their bounding box, which only widens the clip, so disjointness still proves invisibility while overlap proves nothing. The coordinate contract is written out above the clip code.

Navigate logical layers of code changes, visualize relationships, and explore their blast radius. 📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe parser now tracks page-space clipping paths, propagates effective clip bounds through graphics states and Form XObjects, and marks text chunks outside those bounds. JUnit configuration, PDF fixture builders, parsing helpers, and clipping tests were added. ChangesText clipping

Clear StaticStorages in finally.
parse() sets isIgnoreMCIDs and isAddSpacesBetweenTextPieces to true. The current cleanup only closes pdDocument, so later tests on the same thread can inherit these parsing options. Call StaticStorages.clearAllContainers() from finally after closing the document.

Use a fixed locale for PDF numbers.
String.format uses the default locale. A locale with a comma decimal separator produces tokens such as 10,5000, which are not valid PDF numbers. Use Locale.ROOT for deterministic fixtures.

GraphicsStatehad no clip andparseChunkhad no case forWorW*, so atext chunk never knew whether anything could be seen of it. A figure placed many
times under small clipping windows — a tiled or cropped figure, an ordinary
export shape — therefore had every copy of its text extracted, not just the
one the reader sees. Measured through the OpenDataLoader data-loader path on
page 1 of arXiv:2609.20519 ("SoL-Pi:
Recursively Scaling Auto-Research Loops for Efficient Agent Harness"): 3,325
visible characters, against 85,525 that no reader can see.
What this does
GraphicsStategains a clip: the bounding box, in page space, of theeffective clipping path,
nullwhile unclipped. It travels throughclone()and
copyProperties, soq/Qsave and restore it with the rest of thestate.
ChunkParseraccumulates path construction operators (m,l,re,c,v,y) into a candidate box, each point transformed by the CTM in force atthat operator.
W/W*only arm the clip; the path-painting operator thatends the path (
n,f,F,f*,B,B*,b,b*,S,s) applies itand resets the path.
Doof a Form XObject, the form's/BBoxtransformed by/Matrix× CTMis intersected into the clone's clip (ISO 32000-1, 8.10.2), so nesting
composes with the inherited clip.
TextChunk.setClippedText(true)(veraPDF-wcag-algs PR Add: a clipped-text flag on TextChunk veraPDF-wcag-algs#399). Marking only —no chunk is dropped here, and this is deliberately not the hidden-text flag.
The coordinate contract (which space each box lives in, when the clip is
applied, what an empty clip means) is written out as a block comment above the
clip code, because that is the part a future reader will get wrong.
Where it is deliberately conservative
1e-3pt. Touching the boundary, or crossing it, keeps the text — a chunk isnot split at the boundary, so any part being readable means the whole chunk
stays.
Wwith no path point at all is a no-op, not an empty clip.approximation only ever makes the clip larger, so disjointness still proves
invisibility, while overlap proves nothing and no visibility is claimed. Text
inside the box but outside the real path is retained.
null: "nothing is visible" and "everything is visible" are opposite answers.(
BoundingBox.crossreturnsnullfor disjoint boxes, which is why theintersection is computed locally.)
Tests
wcag-validationhad no test dependency; this PR addsjunit-jupiter(testscope) and three test files. Fixtures are written byte by byte by
ClipTestPdfBuilder— a PDF writing library would wrap its own graphics stateoperators around the content stream, which is exactly what these tests measure.
ClippedTextChunkParserTest(10 tests):formUnderAWindowKeepsOnlyTheLineTheWindowShowsclippedTextIsNotMarkedAsHiddenTextpartiallyClippedChunkKeepsItsTextchunkTouchingTheClipBoundaryKeepsItsTextchunkOnePointBeyondTheClipIsMarkedrestoringGraphicsStateRestoresTheEarlierCliptwoPlacementsOfTheSameFormEachGetTheirOwnResultformBBoxAndInheritedClipComposenonRectangularClipIsApproximatedByItsBoundingBoxaPaintedPathWithoutWDoesNotClipCompatibility
The flag is set but never acted on inside veraPDF, so validation results are
unchanged. Only a consumer that reads
isClippedText()sees any difference.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
